- Announcing the highly anticipated macro lenses for the Nikon Z series: the Nikkor Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S and Nikkor Z MC 50mm f/2.8. Both lenses are the first in the Z lineup to feature dedicated macro features with 1:1 magnification ratios. What do you think of these new Z-Mount lenses?
The 105mm is a lens built for macro photography, with a minimum focusing distance of 11.4 inches; a digital display on the lens body that gives you readouts for aperture, distance and depth of field; fast and responsive autofocus; and more!
The 50mm, which is also a macro lens, has a minimum focusing distance of 6.3 inches, the closest of any NIKKOR macro lens!

What are the prices?
same! 105mm
50 or 105? I can't decide wich i want more for my macro. I'm guessing the 50 will have a wider focus area than the 105?
@@isaiasanchez1987 Yes, the 50 will be wider, but you can get closer. It really sort of evens out. I have the F-mount 60/2.8 macro that has been a workhorse for me, so I really just need to add the 105 (for now). Tip: lighting can be easier with a longer focal length because you're not as close, and not blocking the light with your camera (and head, if handheld). 105/2.8 also makes a great portrait lens.

I have tons of 35mm negatives and slides as well as 6x6 negs I have been putting off. The 50mm looks to be the 1:1 macro I've been waiting for.
Other than That, some small critters, flowers and product or food work.
Same! It'll be a nice bonus to finally be able to easily convert those.
They're just to clarify you can digitize 35 mm negatives with this lens? Using the es-1 and es-2?

Looks sharp and contrasty these lenses.
I hope they're priced well, the 50mm 2.8 might be the next lens for my Z50, unless they release a DX prime later on.
The 105 is $1000, and the 50mm is $650. I think the 105 is prices extremely fair, the 50 coulda maybe been like $450-$550 since it isn't even an "S" lens.
@@Realletsplaygrey Wow, really? That's a terrible price. Are we ever going to get prime lenses as cheap as the F mount? The Z lens lineup needs lenses in the 300-400$ mark desperately.
@@TexelGuy for both? I find 1000$ fair for the 105. But yeah the 50 should be much cheaper. Their 50 1.8 should honestly be $350. I shot F mount for 8 years so I can definitely say the Z glass is a massive upgrade, but the prices shouldn't double.
@@Realletsplaygrey Yeah I meant the 50mm, the 105mm is fine, most of the S line lenses have been priced fairly for what they're capable of.
they are going to release a 40mm F2 later this year. Better wait for that, will also be very compact and ligthweight. Perfect for the Z50.
edit: depends on if you want a macro lens or not of course. The 40mm won't be a macro but probably 300 $ or less.

Hoping to catalog my diecast 1:400 scale airliner models. Which lens would be better for this macro work, 105mm or 50mm?? Will be paired with Z6II
Depends on space but if you can get far back enough the 105 would compress the image.
I agree with Johan. If you have enough distance between you and your models use the 105mm. It will produce a nicely compressed image with great bokeh. >Mark

Damn. As a Z50 user, I was all set to invest in the 105. However the 50 is just as good with some added versatility, especially for my wallet.

In terms of a day-to-day use lens, how does the MC 2.8 50 compare with the Z 1.8s 50mm practically?
Seems they both have bokeh.
The Z MC 50mm f/2.8 would be most practically for its shorter focusing distance, which would be ideal if you're shooting a mix of macro images or portraits. The Z 50mm f/1.8 would be ideal if macro images are not something you're taking, but rather you're working in low light situations or needed an even shallower depth of field.
I've been thinking about starting out macro photography of eyes. Would you say the 50mm f/2.8 would be a good pick for that?
Yes, a Nikon NIKKOR Z MC 50mm f/2.8 would be a good starting point for macro work using your Nikon Z mount camera.

Would the 50mm lens be the more appropriate choice to photograph watches?
The Nikkor Z MC 50mm f/2.8 would be ideal if you needed to shoot the face of the watch for example in greater detail, due to the shorter focusing distance.
Think the 50mm macro should be ideal for the masses. The 105 is only when you require certain distance
How do you choose between the two (seriously)? What are the primary advantages of one over the other?
Ricci Talks said he'll be doing a video on exactly this topic, comparing both of these lenses. He doesn't have the 50 yet but it's on the way (his video on the 105 is out now).
I asked him if the main difference was minimum focusing distance, he mentioned there are more technicals to consider.
I pre-ordered the 50 from B&H - but I might change my mind. Both have some advantages for sure.

The right choice would depend on how close you need to get to the subject. With the Z MC 50mm f/2.8, it would have a shorter focus distance which is better when you're able to get physically closer to the subject. Otherwise if the subject is a bit out of reach, the Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S would be best since it offers a longer focal length.

Why doe the L-Fn button on the Nikon 105mm f2.8 S not show up in custom controls on either the Z6 II or Z7 II (firmware is up to date).

@@BandH I took it out on the 4th for a portrait shoot and now on my Z6 II the L-Fn shows up in custom controls, could have been a dirty contact, but now it is working.
Do you note any distortion on 50mm on portraits?
There has been no report of distortion when shooting portraits with the Nikkor Z MC 50mm f/2.8.

ok my ONLY question, because this is the ONLY issue I have with the F mount 105. How is the focus breathing problem with the new Z 105? The F mount, while a great macro lens, suffers an INCREDIBLE amount of focus breathing to the point where a rail is almost necessary for most shots. Has there been any improvement to this in the new lenses?
A very small amount of focus breathing has been reported by some customers and reviewers. We did not notice any in our hands-on review. >Mark

Mc 50 mm will become 75 mm on z50 DX.
Not that one needs fast AF on macro lenses, but to call the 105 macro AF “fast” is an overstatement. It’s painfully slow from what appears from this video.
Very fast for macro class lens.
Nobody takes true macro in autofocus.
Fast lens means lower f value

Hmm..being a nikon user..not impressed compared to the canon 100mm macro f2.8 with 1.4x mag.
The difference between 1.4:1 and 1:1 is pretty small, if something is too small for 1:1, you probably need _way_ more magnification not just a little more, and very few macro lenses do that.
