Your comment about Medium Format has convinced me more than I already was. I shoot a Pentax 6x7 and I understand completely about the crazy sharpness, and yet somehow soft and painterly. If the 105 can replicate that I'm beyond excited
Indeed it has a certain something, it has been suggested I get the Z7 and the Hasselblad side by side, so I indeed will. :) Coming soon/ish :) Cheers Matt
Wow! you have an old Pentax 6x7? I remember 20 years ago, going to star parties and one or two people would have one of those with some hyperised film stuck on the focuser of an Astro Physics refractor.
@@MattIrwinPhotography I looked for this particular comparison but you didn't make it as of now. I am looking so much forward for your video comparing the output of this lens to a medium format camera. It might convince me to get this lens.
I'm looking at getting both. I sold my F-Mount 105 last month with the intention of replacing it with the Z-Mount. The 50 I want for it's capability of duplicating slides (I to have the 50 1.8).
I’ve ordered the mc105 4 months ago, was needing another lens with granddaughter being born I went and bought the mc50 and just got the notification my mc105 was shipped can’t wait to get it
I was on the fence when these lenses were announced, but I went with the MC 50. It's super versatile - 1:1 macro, street, portrait, and I have a box of negatives to digitize so the ES-2 adapter is a bonus. I also don't have a 50 prime so it fills multiple roles for me 🙂 That said, I do plan to add the MC 105 in the future. It's too great of a lens to pass up, from what everyone's saying. Thanks Matt!
I own the 50mm AF-D f/1.4 which works with the FTZ adapter but doesn't have autofocus, so I bought the 50mm MC so I would have a native Z mount 50mm with autofocus, macro ability and it is small, light and discreet for street and landscape photography. I originally thought I would go for the 105mm as I really liked the F-mount VR version of that, but the price and weight/size discouraged me. Perhaps another time. Great summation, Matt. Cheers from Toronto.
i took decision end received today the Z 50 MC the reason is weight and size can be used as street Lens. because of you !!!! I have a 100 MC LAOWA Z mount for long Macro
I liked my 105 f mount and sold it to free up some funds for a z9. Now that I have obtain a z9, 24/70z and 70/200z there is a big hole in my bank account. After watching your video on the 105s I’m thinking that I’ll be getting one shortly. I never thought of using 105 for cityscapes and only used it for product and portrait photography. Thank you for the review, great insights as usual. Aloha.
I pre-ordered both. I received the 50 mm MC. Still no news from Nikon on the 105 mm MC. Traveling to Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado this weekend. It would be nice to have the 105 mm MC on hand. Looks like I'll have to do with the 50 mm MC for this trip.
I decided for the 105, so far loving it. Since I never had a macro before I've been mostly shooting close ups but tried some landscape and it shines there too. Super versatile lens.
@@MattIrwinPhotography I'm good, thanks. I will be ordering your new calendar soon. Funny, the last one is almost half gone already and the week starts on Monday, not like the good old American ones that start on Sunday......................................................... joke......................... I think......................
I would also add that for bug hunting macro photographers the minimum focusing distance can be a big deal. There will also be a difference in perspective as well as oof rendering to the benefit of the longer lens imho. I have the older 60mm f/2.8G which is still one of my favourite lenses, but I've only used it on APS-C bodies so equivalent to 90mm. I also have the Tokina 100mm but on an unstabilised body it's not very practical for hand held macro, at least in my shaky hands. It's a simpler design but optically wonderful and has manual focus clutch. So I agree that unless you need a 50mm or can't stretch the $$$, the 100mm looks like the better option. If budget is an issue consider adapting a second hand 60mm f/2.8G. Y
I just ordered the 50mm 2.8 Macro simply so I have a native Z macro lens but also since I don't own a 50mm already. So bang for buck and doing wedding and portrait photography but a lens that I don't think I will use a lot I think this is a perfect lens in my case. Pairing well with portrait lens that I own, but also a nice option to mix in with my Z 35 1.8 and my new Z 26 2.8 that I used on a recent wedding and just loved this lens. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
After going through your review, I am really glad that I have added this lens in my collection. It is really fantastic lens for portrait and landscape along with macro photography.
Matt, thanks so much for these videos on the macro lenses. I pre-ordered the 105mm on the day it was announced but 38 days later (today) I got an email telling me it was “backordered”, so I am really jealous of those among your subscribers who have received their 105’s! As a retired person with interests in landscape and macro photography, I have been using the F-mount version of the 105mm with the FTZ adapter, so I guess I can get by until I receive my new lens. This will be my fourth Z Mount lens, along with the 24-70, 14-30, and 50 (f/1.8). I also have an F-mount 70-300 AF-P so I am looking forward to a Z-mount 70-200 f/4 with 2x telextender that is more affordable than the f/2.8 version. Keep up the good work! Cheers, Andy in the USA.
If/when in doubt choose the Z MC 105. It is a phenomenally good lens. It has more distance to your living macro subjects. It is a perfect portrait lens. It can stop down more than regular lenses (for depth of field). The Z MC 50, I would choose over other 50s if I shot a DX camera (but I don't). It would be a great portrait lens on a Z 50 or Z fc for that matter and it would have matching weight and size properties.
Just received and tested the 105mm in macro and so far very happy with how the lens works, especially the sharpness. Looking forward to testing the portrait capabilities
I bought both - because I think it is so much easier to move around in a studio with all them lamps, cables and what not with a shorter lens. I shoot a lot of artefacts for a client - and the 50 mill is perfect for the job. The 105 I use for everything else 😂
Both super lens. I use them both for macro photography of pc pcb designs. Graphic cards and inside pc power supplies. You can pick up mint copies of the 105 for well under £700 in the uk. I guess I am used to buying high end Nikon (f1.2 50mm etc) and Hasselblad lens so these seem like bargains to me. Great all round lens too but I tend to favour other lens in my collection for various things.
@@MattIrwinPhotography I can already tell from just taking a few shots of some fruit in my kitchen focus speed and shutter already tells me it is in a different league of my F/1.8 primes the flawless falloff is a sight to behold. Thanks for the content and all your videos mate. Until the next one cheers! 👍
I recently moved into the Z space and managed to snag a brand new (at Best Buy) 50 MC for less than 400 due to what I assume was a price mistake, otherwise I'm hands down a 105 guy. I do have a 105 Sigma macro that I use the FTZII with and there's just something about 105 that makes things look special.
"it's beautiful sharp" I love it!!! Funny thing; I also use my F mount 105 on my crop body and it's crazy sharp... And I love the additional reach... Waiting on my new 105... Can't wait
Being a big Macro Fan - pre-ordered both the 105 and 50 and now have them. The new Z lenses are replacing my legacy F mount 105 and 60mm macros. After a week of using the new Z Macros, I was very pleased with the results. My only disappointment was the new Nikon Z teleconverter will not work on the 105 MC, the legacy 105 would accept a teleconverter. Otherwise, both new Macros are awesome!
Always good to watch Matt. As a landscape photographer I initially thought that the 50mm, being such a featherweight, was a no brainer. But then I thought that the 105 could replace my 85 1.8 and give me a macro as well with less increase in weight than adding the 50 to the 85. So the 105 it will be ....
Dang, seeing some posts where their MC 105 arrived already! Still waiting for mine from June 20th order date. Have the Z 50mm 1.8 so didn't need two 50's. Can't wait! Thanks Matt for this great comparison to help those on the fence.
I'd be the 105. I have the 50 1.8 already and as a hobbyist I'm not going to duplicate lens (so to speak). Need to stretch the budget but for a reasonable bump in price it does seem like a large upgrade.
got the mc 105 and i have to say: this lens is not from another planet, not even galaxy. it's from another univers. this is the perfect portrait lens for me. a deep, clear visuality but also in a way soft enough for portrait work. don't need a 85mm. i work from now on with the 35mm, the 50mm andd the mc 105mm.
Im on the same boat as you.. always getting my sigma 105 1.4 for portraiture over the 85 1.8S lens..i like how the 105 looks but just needs a lot of backing up space but results are awesome in this focal range
You laid out a great argument for the MC 105/2.8 S. The list of extras you provided, ironically, makes the 105 a better bang for the buck over the 50 even though it costs more. Excellent! 📷😎👍
Unfortunately you cannot use a 1.4x teleconverter with the 105mm but you could with the old ones. That makes photography of skittish insects difficult. I have been using the now discontinued Sigma 150mm APO and on the Z8 it's better than the 105 VR. Colour correction is perfect even out of focus. I'm wondering if the 105mm Z is sharper and what the colour correction is like.
Thanks Ronald, yes it is something special, I like it so much it makes me want to get out and experiment, and that is a great sign :) Same as how I feel about the 50mm 1.2 and 50mm 1.8. Cheers Matt
@@MattIrwinPhotography yes, you may remember when I told you I was waiting outside Teds Cameras in Sydney to open to pick up the 50mm 1.2 just when you did your initial review Now because of lockdown I can’t pick up the 105 macro they have for me………….
Food for thought, currently I'm happy with my 150mm Sigma on the FTZ. On the Z50 it gives me really good distance from flighty subjects like butterflies and dragonflies
@@johnpavett68 Some cool dragonflies there! I have used my very old AF-D 300mm f4 with macro rings for dragonflies and buttery things, possible to get some good stuff, but oh boy, what a fight trying to get the manual focus right! Looking forward going back to something AF in the future...
I already have an F mount Nikkor 60mm macro so it is hard to justify the purchase of either of these lenses but I am intrigued by the function button on the 105.
Have had my 105 mm MC for a week now, and has not left my camera. Have played a bit with macro, taken some portraits and just general shooting. IMPRESSED and loving it. That 50mm is tempting as well, but having the 50mm 1.8 S the 'need' isn't there. For now, going to get some mileage out of the 105mm at any chance I can.
I still haven't bought into the Z system because I have a pretty good lineup of F mount portrait lenses between 85 mm and 135 mm which would be hard to replace. Nowadays I am considering going mirrorless and starting with this lens, mainly for portraits, because I really like this focal length, but still can't decide due to the smallish f/2.8 aperture. When there is a cheaper 85/1.8 and now also the (definitely not cheaper, but stellar) 85/1.2 available, and a 135mm (probably f/1.8) on the roadmap, there are definitely a few options to consider, but I'll probably wait a few more months.
If you are someone wanting to convert your old 35mm film to digital you will need the 50mm macro. Right now I only have one z lens and its the 20mm. I think I would go with the 100mm if I was to buy either one of these. But the 200-600mm is on my list to buy next.
If you need to fill the gap, the 200-500 F is excellent on the Z bodies. AF speed doesn't take a hit on the FTZ. Looking forward to the 200-600 but my guess is it's a solid year away (I hope I'm wrong).
@@csc-photo True. I did pick up a 500pf and i use to have a 200-500 when i shot with my d850. I haven't shot long prime in a longtime. It is a challenge soemtimes that is time consuming for what and how i shoot. I will probably sell the 500pf although the size and weight are amazing and do a stop gab filler with another 200-500.
@@csc-photo I considered the 200-500 but I think I'm going to buy z glass from here out. So far there seems to be a big improvement over the f mount versions.
I will use both, as different requirements come up in my assignments. I already have the 50mm, but the 105 is unfortunately not currently available. I have already sold my "old" 105 Macro and hope that this won't put me in a pressure situation.... :)
Great food for thought here. I’m leaning toward the 50mm macro since I’m a wedding tog and ring shots I can get close for. Plus, the 105mm 1.4 on the Z6 II is incredible for portraits!! I don’t see replacing that until a Z version gets released in 2030 (joke sort of). Presuming I get the Z FC in this summer, the 50 MC will be a great addition to that walk around camera too.
Off topic, tu wondering if you would share how you are displaying the prints behind you? Are these paper prints? How are they mounted? How are they hung? I like to look very much!
Hi Matt, I have not found anything that compares the DOF of these lenses. Enjoy walking around taking pics of neighbors flowers. Less interested in post focus stacking. Which would you recommend?
Hello Matt, I have ordered the MC 105mm Z mount. Ordered on the day they coming. But mist the first batch so I have no idea in will come. Keep well, keep safe and enjoy your images
Good overall snapshot of these two Matt and I think you hit the nail on the head. I grabbed the 105mm MC from a local shop and continue to be so impressed with the Nikon Z glass. The 105mm along with a little focus stacking in the Z7II has made some great images for me. As you point out this is also a great choice for portrait shots and lifestyle. I'm having a hard time taking it off my Z7II. Cheers and stay warm.
@@MattIrwinPhotography Hey Matt, since you asked.. www.dropbox.com/sh/xqc10zvir6u5sti/AADDiSfXIukuTm10qKEnupFXa?dl=0 I've been enjoying image stacking with the 105mm MC and I threw a few samples in there. There's a couple that have very light edits and I think a couple right out of camera. There's actually a Matt Irwin inspired shot there, you'll know it when you see it and one shot that actually has me in it but you have to look REALLY close to eye ball that one. As I mentioned above, I need to add a good flash/light to pull in more depth of field. I was sorta stunned when I dialed the aperture closed and got some REALLY big f numbers. Fun piece of kit to work with. Cheers!
Funny to hear the word winter mentioned in July. The 105 sounds great but I’ve got more important lenses to replace, like my telephoto, right now. I’m really interested in the 100-400 although I’m guessing it will be more expensive than I’m willing to pay.
Yep, here I am on the other side of the planet. Looking forward to this winter being gone. Hopefully by next winter the world will be much closer to normal :) Yes there is a lot of interest in the 100-400, let's hope it is not too far away. :) Cheers Matt
So helpful Matt. Am now eyeing the MC 105mm as a result IOD your review! P.S. Just picked up a mint condition Z7 for 1300 euros, second hand, while on holiday near Stuttgart. Am in love!!!
Hello Matt, thank you so much for the instructive video. Have you tried the MC 105 mm. on a Z50 body ? If yes how did that work and what results can be expected ? I saw some photographers claim that using full format optics on A-PSC sensors degrades the performances on these lenses. Thank you.
Thanks Matt! I am looking to get the 105m macro for my Z6ii. You speak about VR usefulness but if I am doing macro I am on a tripod and I have heard that you should turn off VR on the lens and camera? Please advise.
Hi Peter, with my modern day usage of VR it seems to know when it is on a tripod and sorts itself out. But it certainly is not a bad idea to turn it off and save power, if it is still thinking about things. Regarding VR, indeed when handheld for landscape, portrait or macro etc, it is always of great assistance :) Cheers Matt
I'm leaning towards the 105 because of the portraiture capabilities, however I am still trying to find information on film negative reproduction. I have books of both 35mm as well as 6x6 medium format negatives I have been wanting to digitally scan for years. I know there's a 35mm negative and slide attachment for the 50mm but in a DIY situation Will the 105 meet my 1:1 needs on all both formats?
Thanks for your great thoughts, Matt! But omg that music at the end is waaaayyyy too much I literally thought it was a new video and the algorithm brought me onto a rave site. Your vibe is chill and the music was super jarring.
Hey Matt! Would love a video on How the Nikon Z7 ii system compares to Hasselblad H system or even the standard 6x6/7 on image quality. I know these are different and the topic of the video would be subjective, but it would be fascinating to explore optical clarity, resolution, and color rendition. I am certain the medium format is likely better but has the gap closed a bit in recent years. Is the image quality difference enough to even notice from a practical stand point.
I have the f105 macro and it's a great lens, so this will definitely go on my wish list. I'm saving my cash for the 100-400 and when they release a wildlife photography D500 style body. I don't think I'll be getting this just yet, but it does sound amazing.
@@MattIrwinPhotography thanks Matt! No idea how long the pre-order will take. I’m hoping no more than a few months and hopefully more like a month. Thanks for your great UA-cam channel! Best Bill
Hi Matt, thanks for another first class episode on the Z mount lens development journey. I'm working through the planning stage of a project, and I can see I have a strong use case for the 105mc. For example, I'm not sure if you know it, but there's this series on Netflix called Hinterland (located in Wales). In the intro, they use macro-shot video to convey edginess and unease in the opening minute. It really works and I'm going to use this technique in this doco project. Question is: does the 105mc perform equally as good up close with the Z6II as it does with the Z7II? I really love how the Z6 and Z6II both work exceptionally well capturing video in low light. And before I obtain a Z6II to complement my Z6 (for two camera set-up), I just wanted to see what you thought about the above question. Hope this makes sense. Thanks Matt, from over the ditch. Selwyn.
Hi Selwyn, thanks so much :) Great to hear from you. Indeed the Z6 II and Z7 II I would suggest have near on identical performance except for a few areas. I would say the Z6 II is the slightly better video camera, and the Z7 II obviously has the extra resolution in stills. This video ua-cam.com/video/oAM5-b0vcjs/v-deo.html was shot with a mix of the Z6, Z7 and Z6 II, in a 3 cameras setup, and if it was not for my getting the colour balance wrong, you cannot tell which camera is which. Basically the difference in video between these cameras is hard to tell. And especially if the content is destined for platforms like UA-cam. If memory serves me correctly, the Z6 II also has an extra stop of low light performance when focusing in the dark over the Z7/Z6/Z7II. The Z6 is already an outstanding allrounder for stills and 4K video, and the Z6 II gives more in this space, and I think there will be more to come when we see further firmware updates. One thing to consider is if you plan to shoot 4k 60P there is a crop on the senor, which can be mostly worked around with lens choice. I have not found it ever to be a problem in the last 8 months of ownership of the Z6 II. Love to hear more about what you are working on. Cheers Matt
@@MattIrwinPhotography Thanks so much Matt. I'll watch your latest episode (that you have linked above) and keep an eye out for your three-camera use. And thanks for that note regarding the crop when capturing 4k 60P. For this doco, I'll be capturing in 4k 24P and if for slow-mo effects I shoot after upgrade at 4k 60P it will be in relatively short bursts (that crop issue shouldn't be a problem, when converting in post). The doco has a working title of Growing up with our past, and explores the highs and lows of life , and life choices made, by a small group of (once) primary school class mates. Without going into more detail, I want to bring in visual elements that will work with film-festival audiences, both in small cine and online, and presenting as an edgy indy style within the doco genre. It will take a little while to do, but I'm looking forward to the project. Thanks very much Matt. Selwyn.
I've got the F mount 105 too. Currently on D850. But after seeing comparison reviews of the F vs Z, when my Z9 arrives I will sell the F mount 105 and get the Z version. Chalk and cheese. :)
I have the Z 85mm f1.8 and I’m torn between keeping it, or selling it and getting the MC 105mm f 2.8. I can’t justify keeping both. I love the 85mm, but would the 105mm MC be a good replacement? Any one else looking at doing the same thing?
Imagine you're in the sun all the time... photographic nature in hot environments... that composite is going to experience heat stress... hmm how long can it last? has this been tested? just curious...
When it comes to macro lenses I'm of the school of thought that the longer the focal length, the better. The ability to add lighting and to isolate the subject matter is key.... Unfortunately, due to Covid right now, MC Hammer may have said it best, Can't touch this!
Matt you nailed it again, I have the 105mm D l macro lens which of course is manual focus on the Z. Time to upgrade to native Z, it fills a great gap in my lens line up and love that it’s great for city scopes.
I'm a news video photographer. I have the 70-200 vr lens . Honestly the VR on that lens is GARBAGE when zoomed in you can see it jerking and strange focusing .Keep in mind I do shoot at night . Still hate it . Thanks for this video my friend. Think i'm going with the 105 mm. Love everything inside the lens ,like you said better weather sealed .
I just found out that Nikon canceled my order for the 105 mm MC without providing any reasons at all. So my pre-order on the day they allowed it is useless. Now, I am behind the line. WTF, Nikon, I've been a loyal customer, ignored all the negativity towards you on UA-cam. But, this leaves a bad experience that I will never forget, and be cautious of making pre-orders or any orders directly to your store.
Got my 105 Z macro.. love it - but... As is the way, pretty much non-stop rain since I got it, can't get much macro done outside :D From the reviews I've seen (here and elsewhere) the 50mm punches way above it's weight, too.
105 is fantastic 👌 slapped it on my camera 9 days ago and I'm thinking it will stay there for awhile. 24-70 2.8 S will have to sit on the bench for now.
For me it will be the 105mm. I already have the f mount 105 and it works very well so there is no rush. I am saving my pennies and will hopefully have it for next spring
Hi Matt, they are both still pre order in UK & I think Nikon have said they will not be able to fore fill all the orders as they have got more pre orders than expected. For me, shooting just Landscape, then they are a no. I don't like macro photography. I don't shoot video or portraiture. The weight for just the 105 with it's fixed focal length is not a lens for me. Just give me a 70-200 F4 please.
Ordered in the UK 21 Jun and got it today, a lot sooner than I thought it might take. Only limited test shots so far but this is going to be one amazing lens
Pretty awesome lens! I really like its performance for macro, but since Nikon calls this lens a 2 in 1 lens combining Macro and Portraits - I think Nikon should enlarge the glass of the lens to f1.8 or even better f1.2 for absolutely amazing portraits. Or just update the upcoming Nikon Z 105mm f1.2 S to focus at 29cm. Either way this is a great lens!!! PS: can't tell if Nikon will ever release a 105mm f1.2 portrait lens - but I expect that to happen, because why not!? :D Happy shooting ppl!
Hey Matt, I've been watching you for a while now and dude, you need to decide on some kinda more permanent intro. Every time I watch your video there's a different music/intro. You need to be like the MGM roaring lion, or the Warner Bros. kinda thing, so when somebody watches your stuff and I just hears your intro they are like yup, that's Matt Irwin :)

I decided for the 105, so far loving it. Since I never had a macro before I've been mostly shooting close ups but tried some landscape and it shines there too. Super versatile lens.
Yeah it really is good at whatever you want to do, and I think well priced considering how useful it is :) Cheers Matt
Bought the MC 105 and brought it with me to the zoo with my daughter last week. This lens is SO VERSATILE! Love it.
It really is, and fun, as it delivers delicious images :)
I will be getting both. The 105 to replace my current 105 Nikon 105 MC. The 50 MC with the adapter to copy slides and color negatives and prints.
Great choice Paul. Hope you are doing well. Cheers Matt
I hope you get yours soon, loving mine so far... Nigel in the UK
That is so exciting David, let me know what you think. Cheers Matt
I would lean towards the MC105 for me as it gives me a native Z-mount macro lens that fits my photography.
Great call :)
I bought both - because I think it is so much easier to move around in a studio with all them lamps, cables and what not with a shorter lens. I shoot a lot of artefacts for a client - and the 50 mill is perfect for the job.
The 105 I use for everything else 😂
Good call Phillip :)
i already own the 50 1.2, so i decided on the 105 z and it's awesome! : )
Thank you so much for very nicely compared both MC 50mm f/2.8 and MC 105mm f/2.8 micro lens. I preferred 105mm lens. 👌
Mine arrived last night and I look forward to using it this weekend!
You are going to have a ball :) Cheers Matt
Can't wait
The 50mm also accepts the ES-2 35mm slide/film scanning attachment, so that is a massive advantage for folks (like me) who still enjoy shooting film.
I finally received my 105mm. Love it. Only thing I wish is that I could attach the E2 slide adapter
Awaiting delivery of the 105... looking forward to it :) Thanks Matt.
Awesome John do you know how far away it is? Cheers Matt
Dang, seeing some posts where their MC 105 arrived already! Still waiting for mine from June 20th order date. Have the Z 50mm 1.8 so didn't need two 50's. Can't wait! Thanks Matt for this great comparison to help those on the fence.
Cheers Gerry, I hope yours arrives soon :) Matt
I'd be the 105. I have the 50 1.8 already and as a hobbyist I'm not going to duplicate lens (so to speak). Need to stretch the budget but for a reasonable bump in price it does seem like a large upgrade.
got the mc 105 and i have to say: this lens is not from another planet, not even galaxy. it's from another univers. this is the perfect portrait lens for me. a deep, clear visuality but also in a way soft enough for portrait work. don't need a 85mm. i work from now on with the 35mm, the 50mm andd the mc 105mm.
Yeah Jeff, I agree it is hard to explain what it does, but it is just so lovely. Kudos to Nikon. Optical symphony. :) Cheers Matt
Just picked my 105 a couple of hours ago, about to unbox...
OMG, have fun!!! send us all some pics :)
I have a 70-200. Don't know if it would be worth it to do a 105. But the macro option is enticing.
Hey Matt, I’m really so glad you’re happy with this lens and your getting great results
All the very best!
Thanks Ronald, yes it is something special, I like it so much it makes me want to get out and experiment, and that is a great sign :) Same as how I feel about the 50mm 1.2 and 50mm 1.8. Cheers Matt
@@MattIrwinPhotography yes, you may remember when I told you I was waiting outside Teds Cameras in Sydney to open to pick up the 50mm 1.2 just when you did your initial review
Now because of lockdown I can’t pick up the 105 macro they have for me………….
@@ronaldsand3000 Yes I remember, that is frustrating, I hope you are out soon :) We know your pain.
Food for thought, currently I'm happy with my 150mm Sigma on the FTZ. On the Z50 it gives me really good distance from flighty subjects like butterflies and dragonflies
Great suggestion, you must have awesome reflexes, running at over 200mm. Love to see some pics if they are online :) Cheers Matt
@@MattIrwinPhotography look for johnpavett on Instagram mate
@@johnpavett68 Some cool dragonflies there! I have used my very old AF-D 300mm f4 with macro rings for dragonflies and buttery things, possible to get some good stuff, but oh boy, what a fight trying to get the manual focus right! Looking forward going back to something AF in the future...
Yup, think my bucket list will stick with the 105.
Good call :)
No telling when that 200-600 will be available.
Was going to get the 50/2.8 until the Zfc announcement. Funds diverted!
Yes, the more I see it in reviewers hands, they more I fall in love with what it looks like :) One might be on my birthday list too :) Cheers Matt
I am waiting for mt 105. Once 24-70 2.8 blew my mind now I only need the MC lens.
I pretty sure you wont be disappointed :) Cheers Matt
I like macro photography sometime. I only prefer the 105mm macro lens, I have the canon 100mm macro as well, I had it for over 20 years.
Remember Matt you can shoot 4K stills when in Video mode as well
Great food for thought here.
Great call Steve, the MC 50 will be awesome for weddings, from macro to portraits to groups, it will have you covered. Cheers Matt

Indeed sir, fingers crossed not too long. Good luck :) Cheers Matt
I think those who've got the 70-200 2.8 S, they've got that area covered minus macro.
Ordered my 105mm yesterday, it should be with me Wed/ Thurs next week. :D
Great to see the differences between both lenses
We await these lenses in South Africa >> I hope to get the 105 ..as a rendering specialist and Desk Top lens
I would love to buy the Z6II and this 105 macro S
Good overall snapshot of these two Matt and I think you hit the nail on the head. I grabbed the 105mm MC from a local shop and continue to be so impressed with the Nikon Z glass.
The 105mm along with a little focus stacking in the Z7II has made some great images for me. As you point out this is also a great choice for portrait shots and lifestyle. I'm having a hard time taking it off my Z7II.
Cheers and stay warm.
Yep Chris I agree, it is that good, and you can get amazing images of most things .... it is fun and easy. Cheers Matt

@@MattIrwinPhotography Hey Matt, since you asked..

I've been enjoying image stacking with the 105mm MC and I threw a few samples in there.
Cheers!
@@chrishilton6378 Thanks for the pics, they are great. Yep it is awesome to work with I agree :)
The 50 is also the only lens of the two that works with the Nikon slide copier system....
You just sold one 105. Many thanks for the review
This MC 105 is an insanely fantastic lens. Do you think that Nikon might release a new MC 200 as well?
Great review! I've always used short macro lenses because I find them easier to use in the field (I am a biologist).
Thank you.
Go Mr. Irwin! Love the killer music at the beginning, was dancing 🕺 my booty off! Love u Mr. Irwin!

Selwyn.
Wow that sounds amazing. I look forward to hearing how you go. 👍🚀. All the best with it.
I love my 105 F mount, just bought a Z6 ii and FTZ adapter and hope I can continue to use my 105. Curious the comparison between the two 105.
Thank you. This was just the video I was after.
You’re welcome 😊
Imagine you're in the sun all the time... photographic nature in hot environments... that composite is going to experience heat stress... hmm how long can it last? has this been tested? just curious...
Hey Matt! What would you suggest for the first 50 mill lens for z-mount : this one or f1.8? Thanks
What is your use case sir? :)
When it comes to macro lenses I'm of the school of thought that the longer the focal length, the better. The ability to add lighting and to isolate the subject matter is key....
Unfortunately, due to Covid right now, MC Hammer may have said it best, Can't touch this!
Lol. Good one. 😀
Actually, I’m pretty happy with my 105 micro F Mount! It’s the photographer not the equipment. It least that’s what I tell myself to prevent GAS!
Matt you nailed it again, I have the 105mm D l macro lens which of course is manual focus on the Z. Time to upgrade to native Z, it fills a great gap in my lens line up and love that it’s great for city scopes.
Maybe I would buy the 50mm plus the 1.4 exiender.... I think a good compromise....
As is the way, pretty much non-stop rain since I got it, can't get much macro done outside :D
From the reviews I've seen (here and elsewhere) the 50mm punches way above it's weight, too.
same for me :) I rely on natural light and at this level of magnification I've been using f/14 which is kind of difficult also with windy conditions
Ah yes, nothing like being ready for the shot you want and a gust of wind comes along and says "nope!" :D
Great video as always Matt! Thank you!
wish I could afford to buy these lenses
All these great lenses make me want to buy a z-mount body.
Indeed Nikon are showing us the next generation. :)
105 is fantastic 👌 slapped it on my camera 9 days ago and I'm thinking it will stay there for awhile. 24-70 2.8 S will have to sit on the bench for now.
24-70 2.8 S benched .... that is how good the 105 is .... love it :)
For me it will be the 105mm. I already have the f mount 105 and it works very well so there is no rush. I am saving my pennies and will hopefully have it for next spring
so detailed, love the vedio!
Glad you liked it Z Jon!
Noted! And good suggestion :)
any third party can work on the z mount for macro?
Sharpnes and VR, that the beast lense what i ever own, but AF is very bad, always keep serching, if miss close dystance go thru the all lenth again, insteed bit of back bit of front to faund, go for all distance very slow until get the point, something wrong with AF in this lense, i bought second hand i hope is not faulty one.
PS: Is great on z50 aswal,
Nikon should give us option to turn on ond of separete vr for lense and for body, becose is only one switch, we font know is working Lense VR or IBIS, or together (i guess) but swich will be better.
