I never realized these old macro lenses actually extended during focusing... I agree with you that the DOF is so thin on macro that it would drive me crazy having a drive by wire lag as well as a stepper that might jump past my precise intended focus point.

Hey Ken, you said that you only shoot jpeg, but have you tried lightroom or a similar software before?

    • @KenRockwellTV

I’ve been using Photoshop since the 1990s. Never bothered with Lightroom, which is a watered-down little brother. You can do all the same processing to jpgs and raw, and jogs open in ACR just the same. Thanks!

For a Nikon Z fc should I get this lens or the Nikon 50mm 1.8 S… I’ll have the dx z 50-250mm, so maybe I could get macro like shots on their if the 1.8 S is a better buy than the MC, please let me know your thoughts?

Get the 16-50 DX. It gets very close, see www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/z/16-50mm.htm#macro only get the z50/1.8 if you need faster f/stop (which I doubt) and only get the macro if you need to get closer than the 16-50. The 16-50 is the best for most photos, and tiny, too. Thanks!

Thank you@@KenRockwellTV! I’m checking out your photos on the dx 16-50 and you can get a lot of dope photos on that one and pretty close! I just dismissed it because some UA-camrs always crap on the kit lens, thanks for putting real life samples out there! I think I will go with the 16-50 dx.

    • @KenRockwellTV

Ignore UA-camrs. If they had talent they’d be shooting for a living rather than just talking about it. It’s always easy to say the more expensive product is better - so why bother watching them if you can see prices yourself? See also www.kenrockwell.com/tech/2-kinds-of-photographers.htm thanks!!!

I have both the z105 and the z50mm lens.
I use this 50mm lens as my walk around normal perspective lens. I like being able to lean in and get that close shot when needed.
For all my insects and serious macro 1-1 / strobe illuminated macro, I use the z105 macro.

It's been quite a while since you reviewed in print the old Tokina 100mm f2.8 AT-X M100 PRO D Macro. Based on your review of this third-party lens I bought one and have been extremely satisfied with it. Many, many thanks!
BTW, the clerk at the camera store didn't believe that "thee Ken Rockwell" actually had positive things to say about a third-party lens until I showed him the review. 😉

It’s rare, but there are some winners. Sigma and Tamron are pretty bad, while Tokina is the LEICA of third party optics and made pretty well. Thanks!

Hey Ken - would this do well on the Z50? Perhaps the 75mm equivalent improves macro perspective… though not sure if the 1:1 scale changes on a crop sensor.

Hi Ken luv your posts and web site thank you. I shoot wildflowers in the Australian bush which are often quite small flowers and am starting to get fatigued lugging my Nikon d7200 and 105mm macro on long hikes. Am often disappointed with iPhone flower shots. Am considering replacing my kit with z50 + kit 16-50 for lighter kit and just doing without macro for weight savings. Would appreciate your thoughts. I’d move up to Canon, who has some new ultralight RF macro lenses. www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/index.htm z50 is a few years old. Apple really stepped up the macro ability in iPhone 13 pro and now 14 pro; if you haven’t tried those iPhones you will want to.

    • @KenRockwellTV
      @KenRockwellTV  2 роки тому

D7500 bigger and better for action and has many more lenses native to it. Z50 is newer and smaller, but slower to focus and only two lenses optimized to it: the z 16-50 and z 50-250.

7500 much heavier than 3500, but has more control buttons so you don’t have to revert to menus - if you know and use all the settings. 7500 for dedicated photo assignments and 3500 for vacations and carrying all day. This is the best new 70-300 for DSLRs APS-C www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/70-300mm-vr-afp.htm

No experienced macro photographer would ever use the focus ring - mechanical or electronically coupled for precise focus. They would either use a macro rail or get the focus close and move the camera in and out, especially for hand held field shooting.
The price is ridiculous, might have considered @ $400.

Ken, again thanks for your information. In my opinion, this lens, as you said, is great when you only are going to take a walk, and you want to be light of weight with your gear, not nowing exactly what pictures you are going to take.
As a matter of fact, it's a "Nifty Fifty" with some close up and macro capabilities. It's not the best one for macro, but it's good for general purpose and being light of weight. I use it a lot since the day I've got it. Thanks again.

    • @KenRockwellTV

What's with the obsession against plastic? I have never had a "Made In China" plastic lens fail me. I also know when I buy a Nikon lens I'm
buying quality, so I never look at the construction part of reviews. Boring and useless unless of course it's a third party lens.
Wish you had shown more bokeh with this lens. I just bought one and am waiting for it's arrival.
I'm planning on using this lens as my walk around, street photography go to lens with occasional macro work.
I'm getting rid of all of my DX DSLR lenses in favor of the full frame Z lenses. The adapter actually pretty much
sucks. Ever try to use it on a tripod? When you use it you are downgrading your full frame camera to DX. Yep
there is always a price to pay.
The only "old" lens I'm keeping is the 200-500mm, which I don't use that much but is hard to do without.
I only shoot in RAW and am totally blown away with the performance of my Z6 and Z7 ii. I absolutely love them.
    Good job Nikon.

I agree with Ken regarding electronic focus rings. They slow any photographer down. I prefer the lenses with the instant manual focus override.

    • @KenRockwellTV

Great product photography/travel walk around macro. 75mm on z50. I live in Asia, 20 years ago made in China vs made in Japan meant something, not so much anymore. Most of the parts for the "made in Japan" products are sourced from China. The rise of the cheap all metal construction, 3rd party Chinese lenses are testament to their advances in manufacturing optics.
