I think the great thing about Phish is each one is a master of their instrument and they all listen to each other and all play to the Phish Wholeness almost never doing a 'hey look at me' solo. Even Trey's ripping guitar has a light touch while blazing.
Not a huge phish fan - I’m just anxiously waiting on the next Radiohead tune :-) but I do greatly appreciate trey anastacio as a player - great technique tone and feel.
Phish is a nearly endless rabbit hole. I've been listening for nearly 30 years and still have so much to discover. They take me places no other band I've ever heard can match. Love watching people discover them. Enjoy your journey brother.
They did play the audience in chess NYE 1995, then streamed that show 2020 NYE and played us again.... we lost. Thank you so much for doing this, one of my favorite songs, my favorite band, a great youtuber, I needed this also. Next time do a live version.. maybe not a super long one though.
It wasnt just NYE, they played audiences that whole 1995 tour. They would make a move, then the audience would vote at the shows or online (what it was at the time) and then they would show that move and their response at the next show.
They would actually choose a member of the audience to head onto stage and make the move. During the Halloween show the tall Dready choosen couldn't make a move as he was too high and stood in stunned silence. This began the "viral" nature of the term wookie as Trey said, " everyone knows wookies can't play chess" as they escorted the spunion off stage.
If you’re a composer that also appreciates improvisational playing, check out a LIVE version of “Divided Sky”, “You Enjoy Myself” or “Fluffhead” by Phish.
As someone who is not a die hard Phish fan but instead has his favorites, Bouncing Around the Room is the tops, just so playful, fun, and colorful--and because I saw you struggling for a word and I related while thinking about how to describe this song: ACCESSIBLE. Background: my brother would play Phish in the car on the way to my dads. I picked up certain favorites in between the live jam sessions he'd play. The jam sessions were good background music for looking at the scenery out the window, but when my favorites would come on I would close my eyes. Bouncing Around The Room, the more that I think about it, is just one of my favorite songs.
I was lucky enough to be a student at UVM when Phish was still playing the dorms. I first heard them while walking by Nectar's. I even lived in the same dorm complex where Trey and Mike met (Wing-David-Wilkes), which was a stone's throw from where Fishman lived. I started collecting tapes in 1990 and saw my first show in Barre in 91. It's been quite a ride. I've met them all, including Chris Kuroda, the lighting guy. Fun times. I haven't seen a show since halloween 2014.
As a composer, I would love to see your reaction to their more complex arrangements - You Enjoy Myself, Fluffhead, Divided Sky, Foam, Split Open & Melt, Reba. Sample is a great tune, but it's kind of just a straightforward rocker, that is not quite as unique as some of the rest of their catalogue.

Great choice to finally post a video featuring Phish! On the 1995 tour they played two games of chess against the audience. Each show featured one move from the band and one from the audience. They split 1-1 by end of tour. Divided Sky or really ANYTHING from the Junta, Lawn Boy, or Picture of Nectar albums would be great. All the songs from Junta were recorded on the first take as their first album. They’re all music school kids and Trey’s early compositions are astounding. Now they have a banner in MSG after playing there 13 nights in a row. They are one of the most successful touring bands in the world today. Again, my vote is Divided Sky as the next stop. Trey wrote it in college as part of his thesis.
Aah.... Brother Geebz... Welcome to the world of Phish. They are amazing... genius material. These guys are brilliant. I had the pleasure of seeing them in my college days. Such amazing talent in all the band members. Enjoy the ride my friend...❤️✌️🍗
I am so excited that you are getting into Phish! A fun one they did recently was revisit one of their older songs, Waste. The song itself is great, but that version is incredible.
This is one of my favs..this album was great!!! Brings me back to 7th grade lol..I'm in amine and they started having huge shows here at the old air force base at the end of summer like 150,000 ppl ..was amazing
Great video! Love watching your content, and stoked to see you cover my fav band. Do more phish! Preferably live. As for soundtrack of my life, I got into phish in 1996. Saw a documentary on them, got interested and bought A Live One. Face melted, mind blown, started seeing them in the 97 and am still going strong. 🤘
Dude I recommended Phish a few months ago, so glad you checked them out. Such a great vibe, and they are crazy talented. I’ve seen them on show a few times, it’s definitely an experience. I knew you’d dig them, check out Picture of Nectar, it’s a fantastic album. A Live One is fantastic as well. They have such a distinct sound, I love it.
Just spent this past weekend tripping out on some acid, camping on a sandy island with ten other buddies. Phish and Pink Floyd played all night and through sunrise. Definitely a night we won’t forget and will think of it everytime I listen to Phish going forward.
Fun! 97 was my favorite year with Phish. I was incredibly grateful to continue the life syle after Jerry died. I was still young and in college when he passed. I wasn't ready for it to be over. Plus, I was just blessed with some wisdom and finally reaching the legal age to be able to bounce around freely. Because of this wholeness you speak of, being with Phish live, they are able to call in the weather. So, powerful and full of truth. I've witnessed it on more than one occasion. Thanks, for the happy memories! This was perfect for my sunrise.
This is the exact song that made me into a lifelong phan!! I was in middle school when Hoist came out, a friend of ours got hold of the album and we all got hooked. A few dozen shows later and I'm still just as hooked. Great video

They met while in college and music school, their early stuff much more musically complex, creative, and epic while around "hoist" and onwards got simpler and refined but still throwing in surprises. A great journey listening through their discography hearing how they evolved while remaining together for so long, seemingly just having fun.
Definitely need to react to live Phish. OMG soooo good!!! I actually got to work for them for their runs here in Maine years ago. The Great Went, and Lemonwheel. Got paid to see one of my favorite bands performing.
Yessss been waiting for some Phish on your channel! You're right, they played chess vs the audience during their Fall 1995 tour. They revived that for one of their recent Dinner and a Movie broadcasts. So many other songs I want to see you break down... FLUFFHEAD! Reba! Divided Sky! The Lizards! Stash! David Bowie! Hahaha just keep them coming please.
Junta is my favorite Phish album by far. Ester Ester Ester Ester you have to listen to Ester. Please. They are really tied to my teenage years...similar to the one you described. Great content...keep it coming. It is enjoyed and appreciated.
In addition to their considerable talent for group improvisation, Phish have some really intricate prog-style compositions with crazy time signatures and lots of fugues; Divided Sky or Reba would be a terrific choice for a reaction. Sample is one of their most straightforward rock numbers. I’ve seen this band over thirty times in 9 different states over the last 25 years. No two shows are the same, and the feeling when they’re locked in is incomparable, truly inspiring.
Release the Boognish. Not to ruffle feathers... but WEEN is what Phish would be if Phish was cool. (I mean ACTUALLY on drugs and not just charging a mortgage payment per ticket to be ‘into Phish’.
The individual freedom each member has brings them to be greater than the sum of the parts. They will blow you away with method, technique and execution. The rabbit hole goes deep with Phish!
The song that basically started Phish doing what they do, is called "The Curtain(with)". As a composer, you will love it. As far as telling you about Phish, it's like try to describe the knowledge that was in the library of Alexandria. Theres just too much
I’m a HUGE metal head but I’ve also always enjoyed Phish. Very talented musicians. 1 guitar/lead vocal, 1 keyboard/vocal, 1 bass/vocal, 1 drummer/vocal/vacuum player. Yup. See if you can find a vacuum one🤣
One of my favorite Phish tunes is The Lizards. It is part of Trey’s senior year composition “The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday” also known as Gamehenge. I would love to hear your breakdown of the many elements of this composition! Here is a link to a live version from their IT festival! ua-cam.com/video/jkBqfWv_zaU/v-deo.html
I got in to Phish just before their first break-up and I was lucky enough to be at Coventry in 2004. Amazing experience! Please check out “Bouncing Around the Room” or “Free”. Some amazing bass playing on both songs!
My favorite band by far & not even close. First saw them in phoenix in 7-29-97 & it changed my life. Yes phish used to play chess matches vs. The audience. I believe it was 93 to 94. They played 3 matches & won 2-1. Each show a member of the audience would come up on stage to make the audiences move. Never saw it in person. As it was before my time.
I have been waiting for you to finally dig into some Phish! keep em coming! would love to see you check out divided sky, or you enjoy myself, or guyute all three amazing and well composed songs you would really enjoy.
Never thought to recommend Phish to you, not sure why. After this album, I wasn't into them. The early stuff was much more to my interest, then and now. Junta and Rift are my favorites, but there is a lot of amazing stuff in all of them. I recommend "Maze" from the Rift album. fast and fun.
Agree 100%. About the time "Billy Breathes" came out I wasnt so much into that stuff. I loved their early stuff and saw shows from 1994 to 1996 or so including both the big shows in upstate Maine, but once they broke up I was pretty done with them. Their reformation tour was kind of a slap in the face to all the early fans since it was away from NE and all big venues and I just didnt get into much of the new stuff. Junta is a solid album for sure
I got turned on to Phish by some of my.... "experienced" friends during college years. I stayed for the musicianship! "Run Like the Antelope", "Cavern", "Free", "Lizards", "Moma Dance". Phish are one of those bands where every member is super talented, and gives the song something special
I was so fortuate to witness one of the first live playing ever of Sample in a Jar at the Flynn Theatre in Burlington with the Giant Counry Horns - third row center, mind you. They had tons of first playings at that show from Hoist - I think 5 songs total, which was rare because they typically road test songs before releasing on an album. Sample was the rare one that was played before the album release. Still one of the all time best shows I've been to. That was the last time I would ever see them in a theatre and not stadium scale venue. I would HIGHLY recommend you see them live. The energy is ridiculous!
Ben And Jerry’s Phish Food … one day it will be sold with the edibles the fans deserve!!! Jam Bands FTW … Widespread Panic and G Love & Special Sauce are amongst the Red Rocks legends along with with Blues Traveler that will never fail to be a great evening … regardless of weather!!
Saw my first show in '94, bulk of my shows from 94-2000. Took 2.0 off. Back in 3.0 from the jump. You are going to have a blast. Trey is a total composer nerd, loves fugues. So much of what people perceive as improvisation is written music. When he has orchestras perform compositions that they band plays, you can really hear how utterly composed each section is, and how the composition informs the improvisation, if there is any. Some songs deviate very rarely. Godspeed, good sir!
Phish is my favorite band of all time. I’m a career musician of 20 years who studied at a conservatory while growing up, and they are a music nerds dream come true. Trey (their chief songwriter/guitar/vox) majored in classical composition in college. For a composer, definitely check out The Divided Sky, You Enjoy Myself, Fluffhead, David Bowie, Foam, Rift, Maze, It’s Ice, Guelah Papyrus. For rock god guitar playing, check out Chalkdust Torture, Wilson, 46 Days or Llama. They also do amazing extended jams, with songs like Tweezer, Ghost, Bathtub Gin, Carini and Simple oftentimes stretching out to the 20+ minute range. You never know what you’re gonna get at a Phish show. On Halloween they’ve done several covers of entire albums including The White Album (Beatles), Quadrophenia (The Who), Remain In Light (Talking Heads), Loaded (Velvet Underground), Exile On Main Street (Rolling Stones), Waiting For Columbus (Little Feat), and Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie). I’ve seen them around 130 times and have no intention of slowing down anytime soon lol. To try and avoid getting blocked, I would def recommend doing reacts to their live material on unofficially released recordings. 1993-1995 is prolly my fave era of theirs, which had an emphasis on tight, fast arrangements. 1996-2000 saw them learn to really groove like masters, with songs like Sand and First Tube emphasizing three note bass lines (RIP to the great Tony Markelis who was Trey’s bassist in Trey Anasatasio Band and wrote those bass lines and passed away recently). They played thirteen straight shows at Madison Square Garden (MSG) in 2017 without repeating a single song: On New Years Eve 1999-2000 they played until the sun came up on an Seminole reservation with 70,000+ fans in the Everglades. They have done all of this without much radio airplay (they did release Down With Disease as a single). They all attended college together in Vermont and would rehearse like crazy, and do jamming exercises like the one where they would all improv together with no lights on, and Trey would shine a flashlight on someone, the jam would stop, and that person would have to hum the last four bars of what someone else was playing. Really fine tuned their listening skills. This is one thing that sets them apart from all the other jam bands- their jams will change keys on the fly, without even looking at each other. Their mastery of pedals has really gotten them some incredible soundscapes over the years. All four of them are incredible at their instruments. Their career was destroyed by drugs and forced them to break up a couple times for a combined 7 or 8 years, but in 2009 they came back and Trey has been sober and they are playing great and are having the most positive impact on their fans. I myself quit drinking at a phish show on 1-1-11 at MSG and haven’t touched booze in over ten years. You really should listen to Grateful Dead- they wrote the great American songbook. Their lyricism is unrivaled, in my opinion. And Jerry was a musical master. Pretty sure they haven’t been blocking vids too much- would def react to their live stuff that isn’t officially released to be safe. Both them and Phish allow people to tape their shows, so these recordings are very widely available. My favorite years of the Grateful Dead are 1977 (particularly in May), 1974 and 1989. Talking Heads, Little Feat, Rage Against The Machine and Sigur Ros would be awesome to see you react to. Love that you’ve been doing Radiohead- that’s what got me on your page in the first place.
Got into Phish in my senior year of high school because my boss where I was working was a huge fan. Used to resent every minute of having to hear Phish played back of house. One day - the music just captured me in a different way and I haven’t listened to much music outside of the jam world in some time since. They have an album called Joy and while most fans would say the record isn’t anything to write home about - it resonates with me. My mother’s name is Joy and there’s a song on the record - called Joy. This song is very sad and the hook goes, “We want you to be happy! Come step outside the gloom.” My mother has always dealt with depression, so I feel like that song was wrote especially for her. The first time I ever saw Phish - they played Joy as their encore. I was on the floor with my best friend (the venue was GA) and was asking all night if he thought they would play it. Well they did. And for lack of a better word, I was weeping tears of Joy. Thanks for everything you do man! And thank you Phish! Awwright!
If you are interested in more Phish. I would highly recommend a live track like Reba from 8-17-96 Clifford Ball. I believe there are videos from the show, so you should also be able to see the band performing. The beautify of many of Phish's tracks is the combination intricate composed sections coupled with strong jamming, and this particular track is a prime example of that. Please consider it ... full disclosure, it's probably a 17 minute track, and that particular version has an extra surprise.
A big part of Phish for me is the images of the Phish shows I have attended that play in my mind when I listen to the band (live or studio albums). Their lighting designer is the fifth member of the band and their live shows are second to none......If you ever have the chance to attend a show, it will enhance the listening experience moving forward. I firmly believe that Phish is not everybody, but if you ever attend a show you will get why phans are so dedicated to the band
I got into Phish when I was a sophomore in high school. I was never a touring fan....but they had some killer merchandise, so I had about a dozen or so T's - only saw them twice, I think. Really dug these guys. Ended up, by chance, going to college in Castleton, VT for a year (had to work on those grades to get where I wanted to go). Wonderful time there. Good friends and learning to be on my own. Dear god did they listen to a lot of Phish (among other things). It was to the point that it kinda ruined it for me. I didn't listen to them all that much after that.....but when I hear them, I'm brought back to that Era and I'm reintroduced to how fun and how good the band is.
Dude, love your videos and love that you’re getting into Phish! I loved them around the time that this album and a few before it came out. You really need to check out some stuff from their album Rift (I would start with the title track). In my opinion it’s some of their best musicianship, particularly Mike on bass. I bought you a cup of coffee finally as well :)
Been subscribed for awhile and was hoping you might get around to Phish eventually. Thought about what song might be a good transition given the somewhat heavier nature of a lot of the stuff you review on here, and came up with Guyute off Story of the Ghost. Harry Hood, Reba would also also love to see you react to. Thanks!
Would love to see you do more of the long compositional songs and check out live recordings. Reba, Fluffhead, the Lizards, You Enjoy Myself, Divided Sky are great places to start. Great video!
seen Phish a number of times; they're all amazing musicians, especially Page on keys and Gordon on bass. from a composition standpoint, PLEASE listen to You Enjoy Myself and from a bass perspective, It's Ice. 🤯
I was there for their midnight to morning set at New Years '99-'00. Requests for review: You Enjoy Myself (by Phish and full orchestra), Harry Hood (from 'A Live One'), and any song of theirs with "tube" in the title
Phish are a tremendous band, I discovered them during my trip to the Canadian west coast in ‘95 (I’m a east coast Canuck), been a fan ever since. Trey is my favorite guitarist hands down. If you likey the Phishy then try out You Enjoy Myself or The Squirming Coil from A Live One or from Lawnboy: Reba or Run Like an Antelope, ohhh yeahhhh ! Sadly the friend who introduced me to Phish died a few years later in a car crash coming back from a Phish concert... We miss you Jean Philippe and thank you so much 🇨🇦❤️
Yes! More Phish..... highly recommend something live from them. Actually... given what you do, it would be fascinating to hear your thoughts on “You Enjoy Myself” (may also see it referred to as YEM). One of their more progressive tracks (of which they have several). Not just a “jam band.”
Hello, I'm new to your channel and really enjoying your breakdowns, even of bands/singers that I'm not familiar with. Please direct me to some videos of you performing. I look forward to learning more from and about you. Thanks for what you do and sharing it with us. ✌😎👍

Definitely need to react to live Phish. OMG soooo good!!! I actually got to work for them for their runs here in Maine years ago. The Great Went, and Lemonwheel. Got paid to see one of my favorite bands performing.
Yeah a live version is needed, not like a lawn boy or some marathon, but something like 12 minutesish
WOW! What a great analysis. You are a wonderful teacher.
Junta is my favorite Phish album by far. Ester Ester Ester Ester you have to listen to Ester. Please. They are really tied to my teenage years...similar to the one you described. Great content...keep it coming. It is enjoyed and appreciated.
Next time you are in a low place check out "If I Could" on this same album. It features the gorgeous voice of Alison Krauss.
Beautiful song
But I don’t know how!
I could listen to you all day…fantastic
In addition to their considerable talent for group improvisation, Phish have some really intricate prog-style compositions with crazy time signatures and lots of fugues; Divided Sky or Reba would be a terrific choice for a reaction. Sample is one of their most straightforward rock numbers.
I’ve seen this band over thirty times in 9 different states over the last 25 years. No two shows are the same, and the feeling when they’re locked in is incomparable, truly inspiring.
yikes
You should really check out a band called "Ween".
They are odd and eclectic.
Great idea. I second that.
Ween is the best.
Transdermal Celebration is a good place to start. Shout out to Haleiwa! Used to live right on Kam highway
Release the Boognish.
Not to ruffle feathers... but WEEN is what Phish would be if Phish was cool.
(I mean ACTUALLY on drugs and not just charging a mortgage payment per ticket to be ‘into Phish’.
I second that request.
Glad you liked the shirt, you was a great inspiration and we made ourselves some as well :)
"Hook" by Blues Traveler is all about how that familiar hook gets you.
What about chrash/burn live version? Their musicianship really shines there and they're probably one of the best rehearsed bands out there
The individual freedom each member has brings them to be greater than the sum of the parts. They will blow you away with method, technique and execution. The rabbit hole goes deep with Phish!
Divided Sky!!!!!
You might want to try listening to their song, “Fee.” Great song! They were great live!
were?
@@golgiapparatus1428 when I saw them
ah alright, I misunderstood. when did you see them?
@@golgiapparatus1428 saw them in Boston in 1994. First concert I went to ever and it was amazing 🤩
that's awesome!
OH MY GOD YOU DID PHISH!!!

More phish! Divided sky, Harry hood, slave to the Traffic Light, maze
4:14 "food money" aweright!
This came out of left field! Lmao, this band had 3 songs on Guitar Hero and fell in love with their sound!
Sorta, I and a few others have been asking for this for a while and he commented about 4 months ago that they were on the map!!!
@@justaname2422 a shoot, i just started watching about 2 months ago so that’s probably why! But i get excited when i saw this!
@@xVIPgaming Same! It was a little like christmas not gonna lie lol.
Yeah it's feel good, positive tunes but it ain't no Metallica
Phish has got some darker tunes though... kind of like a tim burton darkness, but still....
Yes! More Phish!
I have been waiting for you to finally dig into some Phish! keep em coming! would love to see you check out divided sky, or you enjoy myself, or guyute all three amazing and well composed songs you would really enjoy.
Only one guitar my man. Tray is unbelievable at how amazing good he plays it.
Was hoping someone would say that before me 😂
Never thought to recommend Phish to you, not sure why.
Perfect sunday morning jam
Gotta do Bathtub Gin live from 98, absolutely amazing!
Bathtub gin is a fun one
They really told some vivid stories in those early phish songs... this one is probably their funniest
I appreciate your musical background and input
Nice breakdown Jah Jerry Jah love Jah Herb Jah rastafari praises blessings respectfully
Phish always makes me feel better!
Sample was one of a handful of their songs which landed on college radio!
Love your reaction. More phish please
UA-cam: *Reaction channel posts Phish content.*
Me: Go ahead, just take my like.
Come step outside the gloom.”
My mother has always dealt with depression, so I feel like that song was wrote especially for her.
Awwright!
So happy for you to have had that experience! As they say - "this is your song, too".

Bouncing Round The Room off A Live One is an amazing live groove, off that album also You Enjoy Myself.
Only about 200 Phish songs to explore!
Sample from "Bakers Dozen" is unparalleled to any of the other live performances
Phish fans are the (affectionate) worst.
They can ruin Phish for you in one marathon ramble about a light show.
@@jasondelph2231 ha ha ha. So true
Thanks!
Guyute Nice Jah Herb Jah Love Jah Jerry Jah rastafari praises blessings respectfully
Picture of Nectar and Hoist remain two of the best albums I've ever heard. Magical.
Phish - You Enjoy Myself
I loved this song in like ‘96
I killed a White Widow with a pack of smokes more than once to this....
Hello, I'm new to your channel and really enjoying your breakdowns, even of bands/singers that I'm not familiar with.
Please direct me to some videos of you performing.
I look forward to learning more from and about you.
Thanks for what you do and sharing it with us. ✌😎👍
Would love to see you react to Esther by the band. Might be their best song. One of my favorite songs of all time. Gorgeous.
