- Music is a central part of life for many of us, whether we listen, dance or play. It can shape our mood or transport our imagination, but what is going on in our brain? Can music be used to help an ailing brain, or boost a learning one? The UCSD SIMPHONY project, in collaboration with the San Diego Youth Symphony, is attempting to answer these questions by studying if music training has an impact on the development of children’s brains and other key skills.
What specific experiences might shape the growth of specific brain circuits? By understanding music’s power to shape the brain, our hope is to be a part of the answer to this groundbreaking question.
John Iversen is a UCSD neuroscientist studying music, language and the brain in an effort to understand how we perceive rhythm, and how musical rhythm can be used in medicine. John is also directing the SIMPHONY project, an ambitious collaborative longitudinal study of the impact of music training on brain and behavioral development. By night he’s the co-founder of San Diego Taiko, a group dedicated to sharing the dynamic energy of Japanese taiko drumming with the community.

Looking at the number of views on this video just made me realize how much we disregard music. How many people have told you "I love music!" But they don't know, or don't care to learn how to play an instrument. I have always wanted to learn how to play the guitar and or the piano. These videos really inspire me to learn more about music. Thank you!
lol u made me look at the number of view. And......... really the views hv a significant difference compared to other TEDx video OMG. Anyway have u started playing guitar or piano? I learned guitar before and i also played ukulele (self taught). I also learn urban choreography (dance). haha play music, sing music and dance music.

I've been learning guitar for a couple of years, I'm pretty much self taught and I'm no expert but from playing around with it for a few minutes a day on average I've gotten to the point where I know a lot of chords and can use them well, I can like hear a melody and pick it out quickly, etc. Just a little encouragement, it takes time but it also takes less time than I expected lol

abigail I'm six years into playing the cello. I feel that it's not that people disregard it, but that most people find it daunting, when in reality they don't realize how easy anything is once you put time and effort in it.
Music should be part of the core curriculum. Music Ed. is a great way to help brain development.
My grandaughter was born without the left lobe of her brain. This leaves me with more questions than answers.
By the way. She is high functioning. Such a miracle!
All I can tell you is that the brain is very adaptive and even when a part is damaged it's possible for the brain to adjust another part to use it for the function that was lost. I don't know much about it and can't tell you to what extend the brain is capable of doing that and what the limitations are.
I take it my munchkins gonna be the creative kind. Less the systematic kind. Will naturally hate mafs. & I do observe how she reacts to music. I def think she'll have great memory. & Shell be a music lover
But her version of dancing is the cutest. Kinda wish I was a baby too tho. I'd be excited about everything. And if I do get mad at everything & I'm just annoying & bratty, ppl would just give me a pass. Bc I'm cute & munchkin size. & Unrelated but my oldest using smaller me as a profile pic is ummm? Have no clue what my weird *** fam tells her & her dad's side about me but 😒🙈 I guess my oldest will listen to music to sort it out, I guess...

The study results are B&W. It's easy to talk about kids should take up an instrument. Conventional music lessons focus on the technical aspects of playing (reading notes, the right finger techniques, etc). If you don't make music education fun & engaging, motivate people to learn, you are going to turn them off to the point they'd rather watch online videos or play video games.
thepianoplayer416 at least they might watch tutorial on songs they like. All I played in school was a flute; now I've picked up a guitar and I'm so glad (one would think Spain promotes the spanish guitar, but not at all)

Totally right, i’m a music teacher here in Uruguay and Brazil and I see it everyday. If my lessons aren’t fun they’ll do a mess in classroom and lose interest in music. My goal is that they fall in love with music as I did and enjoy their music lessons. Such a challenge! But, knowing the neuroscience behind learning helps a lot

@@kalmia01 simplify, sistematize, teach with games. Make sure they know that they need that knowledge. And make music, always!

Una persona aquí es cuadrada o le dijeron de niño que nunca podría tocar un instrumento.
De acuerdo contigo pero en la sociedad de hoy, no hay muchos motivos para tocar un instrumento, todas cosas son sobre para ganar los dineros en la industria de música por lo tanto es muy caro para pagar por un niño para aprender. Pues es mi opinión.
Cell-Tube hoy en día hay material de sobra para aprender casi cualquier instrumento por internet, que de paso aprendes a aprender, lo cual sí es objetivamente útil (la música también lo es, en realidad, aunque tenga mucho componente subjetivo)

the reason why music is a nice thing is because only few people do it well and even fewer are unique. Now we're gonna scan kids brains and work out if they are gonna be the next Kurt Cobain? I dunno this science stuff is gonna make art really boring one day

To understand anything non-physical, one needs a certain level of creativity and imagination. Frequencies are hard to see but easy to feel.

What I've heard from people is that it's haram if the meaning is haram, but music itself isn't haram
