I have been to a talk given by the man responsible for the care of the Australian ice runway at the Davis Antarctic base. There is a massive amount of care that goes into ensuring that the runway is kept in a pristine state; for example, a single drop of oil can cause a hole 1.5 metres across and 0.5 of a metre deep to develop in 24 hours because of the extra heating from the sun that it attracts so all vehicles going to the runway have to be decontaminated before being allowed onto the airstrip precinct. Braking action on the ice runway is actually quite good and the Australian runway does have GPS approaches but they have to be recalibrated every so often as the runway is built on a glacier and it is moving.

This is a shortcome of humanity. It's hard to change things that we used to do for years. We still find it normal to have cars with big engines and stuff like that...crazy when you think of the impact...

Aviation has come a long way to try to make flying cleaner, so trying to stop aviation is the same as trying to stop cleaner technological advancements.
People are talking about Electric Planes, but how are we supposed to get there if we stop inventing and upgrading aviation?

The A340-600 was the longest commercial jet in the world (until 2010 when the 747-8 took that title). It's my favorite plane cause the cabin is incredibly comfortable. Seats are spaced 2-4-2 in economy. And Lufthanza has it set up with the bathrooms and a bar downstairs so that economy passengers can take a break from their seats.

I think that's pretty cool. However, at 4:45 into the video, down at the bottom left of the screen, what should we see but an ancient Douglas DC-3. While I can't really see all that close up, I'm going to suggest that it's probably a Basler conversion. Flying since before WWII into the 21st century. Sure, it's cool to see the A340 being there, but the DC3 speaks volumes in and of itself.

Wow thats amazing, bravo to all of you! A perfect flight and so well presented too. I dont necessarily hope for many more, id like to see less pollution and the few remaining pure places on the earth left alone, but I love that we explore and know everything too. Explore without damaging. What an amazing scene, white, white and white, and also its the first time ive seen an airliner land normally with no airport, terminal, support or anything. Its like a new world, like HiFly landing on Mars. Historic flight and historic video too.

Great video. Thanks for sharing. Great post production too. I can relate to the crew’s excitement. Back in 1980 I flew a helicopter crew from Winnipeg to an ice strip just northwest of Flin Flon (CYFO). Can’t remember the name of the lake but it was a gloriously cold blue day in January with perfect weather conditions. It was my first ice strip landing in a light twin - an older model PA-23 Aztec. Again, congratulations to all concerned and thank you for publishing this unique flight.

  • @davidgrisez

This was a unique flight to have a commercial jet like the the Airbus A340 fly to Antarctica. As a rule there are various flights to Antarctica to support the various research bases on that continent. Those airplanes are commonly specialized airplanes for use in Antarctica.
