Huawei is killing Apple in China: the Kirin chip, the Mate-60, government iPhone bans, and now Pura

- Apple (AAPL) is getting hammered from all sides in China, the world's largest smartphone market. Huawei, its chief rival in China, shocked the market last year by producing a 7-nanometer chip and a new line of smart devices called the Mate 60.
The Mate 60 immediately grabbed market share from Apple, leading to a sharp drop in their Q1 results.
Then, the Chinese government announced that iPhones would be banned for use by government officials, including municipal-level authorities and agencies, and state-owned firms.
Huawei's new Pura-70 is aimed at Apple's high-end users. Typically smartphone manufacturers compete against Apple on the basis of price: comparable features, but at steep discounts to the iPhone. But Huawei's new offering is priced almost the same, and features state-of-the-art camera aperture technology that is novel to smartphones. They have priced the -70 at just a slight discount to the iPhone 15, but at parity for the premium models. Their pricing strategy implies that Huawei's Pura-70 is equal on the basis of features and quality, and they are going after the highest-margin consumers.
Apple now faces formidable competition from Huawei on the mass-market side with the Mate-60, on the high end with the Pura-70, while under the cloud of the Chinese government's restrictions on iPhone purchases by government employees, state-owned firms--and anyone who hopes to do business with them.

I wish I could buy a Huawei phone here, but I can't because it is banned here. Back in the 1980s, the US govt tried to ban Japanese automobiles, because they were inexpensive and very high quality. The US automotive industry lobbied congress to put tariffs on Japanese automobiles, and they did. People still bought them, because they were reliable and inexpensive.
Now instead of allowing in competition, they just ban it. They banned Huawei 5G telecomm equipment, Huawei phones, and now they are putting trade barriers on Chinese EVs. Trade barriers for Chinese EVs isn't enough, so they are trying to ban the import of those EVs. They are trying to ban TikTok.
In the media, you just see a lot of anti-China, and anti-Chinese hysteria. They are just painting a negative image on Chinese people, and China as a whole.
I don't see why people in China should buy American brands. In my humble opinion, they should stop buying US brands, because they are funding these politicians in the US by making US equity markets go up. These politicians want to play on the anti-China hysteria to win points, so the people of China shouldn't be funding people that harm them and their interests.
I would say China buys a ton of US made item, then have those companies lobby for China in the States. The system is corrupt in the States, just play their game. It isn’t like Americans will realise their freedom is based on lobbyists, and big corporates.
Mainland Chinese don't fancy American product, if we talk about automobile, they preferred German brand. As for handset, they are definitely shifting away from Apple but still there some rich punk wanted it as symbol of status/wealth. Just like my niece studying at Taiwan, buying the latest Apple model because she can't lose face to her schoolmates.
The only thing that mainland Chinese obsessed with America is living the "America dream". All rural folk insist on their next of kin to migrate into "Mei Guo" because they were too indoctrinated or brainwashed as country of opportunities and wealth.
Our society are so skewed that mainland Chinese wanted to migrate into America while American wanted to leave for China and Asia, Malaysian wanted to leave for Singapore, Singaporean wanted to leave for Canada + Australia, Australian wanted to leave for HK + China, Hongkies wanted to leave for Canada.
People from Asia wanted to leave for the West but not knowing today isn't 60-80' where Asian is welcome(as cheap labor). What's the purpose living at hostility country and getting humiliated daily.
It's getting very dangerous for Chinese living in the US now due to increasing racist attacks
@@DJs021 The image that people get about the US is from the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s. Today, it is a very different place.
@@DJs021 I agree with 90 percent of that, except for Apple products. Settled back down with iOS, and it’s just so much easier to integrate across with laptop / other Apple devices. It ain’t just about “face”.

Highly recommend OnePlus. I have a OnePlus 7 Pro and it works flawless even after 4+ years plus Oxygen OS is way better then Samsung's bloatware filled UI...🤣
Huawei has its own OS, not Android anymore
Only issues I can see is if they hit you with import duties and taxes
And will it be compatible with your cell phone provider? If anyone knows?
But then my guess is worst case you are paying about the same price if some retailer had imported it in and marked it up for sale at their store
Had OnePlus 12 and Watch 2 for several month, can not be happier!

The US Congress has lost all the American spirit.
It no longer represents and works for the people of USA.
Dont ask what your congress can do for you.
Ask what your congress can do for IS REAL
Good to let these arrogant politicians have a taste of their own medicine. Cooperation is always better than sanction
sanction is cutting down his own big trees, smart plant smile
Downstairs American, you live in America but you do not have freedom to buy better products and it is ridiculous.
There really isn't much freedom. People vote for the same crappy two parties which aren't much different from each other. People are given a choice of bad or worse. People can't buy what they want, because of import bans and tariffs. People have to buy low quality machines produced in the US at inflated prices.
There isn't much choice when it comes to medical care or medications, these are monopolistic industries, so these healthcare providers, hospitals, medical equipment producers, insurance companies, and pharmaceutical industries can charge whatever they want.
American politicians hype up freedoms for their selfish agenda while also using democracy/freedoms as a hegemonic tool to interfere, sabotage, subvert and demonise other sovereign nations not toeing their so-called "rules based order". Enough said.
Let me be straight on this: there is no democracy or freedom in the west today. People live under a fascist regime that wears the mask of “democracy”.
The US government doesn’t allow their citizens the freedom of choice and decide for them what they can’t buy. You have more freedoms to buy things in china. The US government needs to practice what they preach.
@@johnc007 Guess what? They would allow you to speak here.
Don’t blame Huawei or China for Apple’s decline. The iPhone from 12 to 15 are virtually the same without major innovations. We can’t win the race by tripping our competitors alone.
Doesn;t mean apple won't try. Standing still and tripping and banning the competition is a lot cheaper way to win.
iPhone 12-15 stayed virtually the same because they could, because the US government stopped Huawei from competing with iPhones on the international market.
Well the price was different
If you notice the US is constantly condemning China's government for funding companies like Huawei and BYD because it is supposedly unfair to western counterparts, while at the same time sanctioning Chinese companies into oblivion every chance they get. The logic there is to forcefully keep China's technological development behind mainly for military reasons but others as well. This has been openly admitted by US govt. officials.
At the same time the US is giving out billions of $ in funding to companies like Samsung, Tesla, Apple etc. to build factories in the US.
It almost seems like the so called 'free market' where governments should not meddle into corporations is not actually working and it's only promoted when it is successfully working to oppress the rest of the world and benefit the US.
Gone is the cheap Chinese labor they were feely exploiting for so long. Also because of the hegemony the US had for so long over technology, the western corpos became complacent and innovation stagnated quite a bit. This all could have been different if the US ever gave thought about working with other nations in solidarity instead of sabotage and imperialism, but that could be considered socialism and as everyone in the US knows 'Socialism is when no iPhone'. :D
PS: apologies for the long comment.
I think it is immoral to buy American or Israeli products if at all possible to avoid them.

Just a slight correction. Huawei was never a budget device, and was always priced similarly to apple. The biggest difference is that they were much more inovative, so you got something that was actually worth that much money. For cheaper devices Huawei had the sub brand Honor, which they were forced to sell after the sanctions. Honor has now also become a premium brand. The reason Huawei is now reclaiming the top spot is because they now have access to chips of their own making.
Actually Huawei have phones at different price level. Mate series and P series (Now Pura) are the flagship phones and most reconized. They also have some low end lines like the Nova series. Around 2000 yuan range. I used to have a Nova 4 before the US sanctions. It was a good phone too.

Huawei used to be a phone company. After the sanction, Huawei is now a car company, semiconductor company, AI company, Internet cloud company competing direct against Tesla, ASML, TSMC, QUALCOMM, Google, Apple, Samsung, Nvidia...and even Bluetooth. Suggested?
It's a delicate scenario. China still has (perhaps millions of) workers working for iPhone. With a rise of Huawei, the government can fine-tune its stance away from supporting Apple. OTH, with a strong competitor from Apple in the market, it will make domestic brands more competitive.

@@itsme-nt6yu there really is/was no contact between China and Apple. let me explain. Foxconn won the contract from Apple. Foxconn is then responsible for hiring of personnel, setup supply chain, acquire all the parts to assemble the phones, pay royalties to chip companies, submit phone to Apple for inspection, then ship it to port. Apple then pay Foxconn $X for the service.
US asked Apple (for certain unknown favor) to move its assembly line to India in exchange for Quad and other things. Apple then asked Foxconn. Foxconn either move, or lost the contract.
Apple move to India is exchange of favors between US, Apple, and India, nothing to do with labor costs.
the phone produced in India 50% or less passed quality control. Foxconn is the loser here.
Kevin was wrong about Apple supply chain in previous video. Apple has zero to do with all the dirty details, that's the reason they left US.
To be fair, Apple did a huge amount of self-damage by trying to sell "Make in India" iPhones in China instead of Chinese-made iPhones. That's a slap in the face to the country that produces the most iPhones at the highest quality, whereas India is known not to produce high quality electronics. Apple was roundly lambasted for this, and there's no good explanation for it. Apple could have, and should have, shipped the Indian phones to the USA, Canada, Australia & the UK where they'd have been far better received.
Also, the Kirin 9000s in the Huawei Mate 50 is a 5 nm chip made by tweaking 7 nm tools. It performs like other 5nm chips by Samsung, so it's a legitimate 5 nm chip. US chip sanctions were supposed to limit China to 14 nm, and a 5 nm chip is 3 generations beyond that. It was supposed to be "impossible".

For Apple, it's a case of "a fish needs water." Whether the river needs fish is completely a different matter, as long as Tim Cook still wants to increase its Indian production to 25% from the current 5%. A more pressing problem for Apple is how to arrest the sliding sales of iPhones, not only in the Chinese domestic market but also worldwide. To be fair, Apple is fully capable of all the things Huawei did for the Mate60 and the new Pura70 had it really focused on product development and innovation. However, Apple was too confident of its brand name to the point of complacency and so it has only itself to blame for the current crisis it is facing right now.
The world should let competition takes it course
The explanation is simple. In the US they have allowed Apple, Google and Amazon to monopolise the tech market. In the beginning when Apple was fighting IBM PCs they struggled hard to get a hold of any market share, but they did it through innovation. Now the reverse is true. As a monopolist they have not improved their phones over the last few years very much and mostly cosmetic. Huawei on the other hand had the fight of its life on as the US tried to destroy it, so their engineers are like tough fighters. Now they will enjoy the fruits of that investment. The US has got it coming to them. Photonic chips will be next.
Facts are Facts...
I would change to Huawei if we had them here or if they didn't cost thousands to buy online
The mate60 pro is a game top notch period.
You won’t be able to buy any affordable items in US because of China’s “overcapacity” issue according to Yellen. Americans will be forced to buy overpriced items in order to support those politicians’ donors. On the other hand, China won’t be able to buy things that they needed from the US because of the US politicians said so. Again, how do these politicians expect these companies to grow if they’re not able to sell their products to the biggest consumer market in the world is really beyond me. Of course the politicians allowed these companies to sell things that the Chinese companies have the capacity and capability to produce, then why would any company want to buy it from the US for at least 2 times the price? Are these politicians able to subsidize these companies forever because of the blockade?
Good news for the consumer.😊
Apple will not be missed!
Huawei's phones will only affect the Chinese market since Google isn't allowed to sell them Android OS. Huawei phone sales outside of China will be minuscule.
