I had a few Gobots, including Cy-Kill as the first one I got. The animated Hanna Barbera TV series Gobots is entertaining with really good character personalities for each character.
The Transformers had a superior cartoon and much more complicated toys. Simply put, Transformers looked cooler. However, I had like 6 or 7 Transformers and dozens of GoBots (and even more of the GoBot knockoffs). The reason? Price! My parents weren't rich, and I only earned so much as a kid. For what you spend on one big Autobot, you could buy several GoBots. And while they sacrificed some of the cool transforming features of the Transformers, they were generally more durable and easier to play with in robot mode. If I was watching TV or reading comics, it was probably Transformers, but if I was playing, it was far more likely to be the GoBots. Leader-1 was possibly my favorite transforming robot to play with as a child. He looked great and you didn't have to worry about losing the pieces or breaking him.
Same here. I had a case full of GoBots and similar smaller transforming toys, but only a handful of Transformers. GoBots were a few bucks a piece while Transformers were several times the cost.
This is my reaction exactly. You could have a whole Army of Guardians Renegades and some no-name knock-offs and have very little space taken up in your vacation suitcase
@gangstagrandpa77gaming96 the transformers toys came before in Japan, Gobots is an almost entirely American construct being spearheaded by Tonka and Gobots toys beat Transformers by a whole year

Yes, I had both Cy-Kill, Leader-1 and a few of the others back then. I also had the Command Center. Many of the GoBots were plain albeit, but still very fun to play with. Sadly enough, The whole premise back then was to sell toys for Tonka and Bandai when it came to the GoBots and not for the story. That's why the whole GoBot thing failed way back when. When the Transformers started up in 1984; it was more for the story of the long-standing feud between the Autobots and the Decepticons. And from there on, the whole toy craze for the Transformers took off. And it explains why the GoBots TV series never did pan out and died out early while the Transformers series flourished and became a staple in American society while the old GoBots basically we're almost forgotten about.

I still actually have the leader one in pretty good condition always liked how he had that shield that seemed to last for a little while. They also seem to be on a tear his allies did not have.

The characters may not be as slick as Transformers, but the writing can hang right with it. I totally want the MRDX-01 Bike Robo from Action Toys!
Interesting, but not much I didn't already know. I liked the cartoon, and felt that there were some ideas that the Transformers could have learned from. However, while the Transformers were far more expensive, they were also a bit more rewarding to transform. Also, I think the Transformers cartoon did a much better job of setting up the world than its counterpart, and the stories were better balanced between comedy and seriousness.
Before we get to Scooter’s nightmarish face, can we please establish why his voice was made to sound like Cookiepuss, the talking Carvel ice cream cake?
It's a "friendly robot voice" Frank Welker has used in other productions. It's the same voice he used for H.E.R.B.I.E. in _Fantastic Four_ during the 70s, for instance.
I remember them, and I too walked away from GoBots for Transformers... For my part the average GoBot Transformation was 1. Stand vehicle on rear bumper 2. Pull upper body up (revealing Legs); Feet may or may not remain connected 3. Pull out Doors/side panels (for arms that only pivot at shoulders, w/ no 'hands') 4. Either stare at Dead-eyed face on under carriage, or Flip a Panel to reveal a Face... maybe a 1 in 10 chance of a distinct "Head upon shoulders" Humanoid form TF had some weak ones, but almost to the Bot The above sequence defines 90% of the GoBots figures I saw and it didn't help that the show seemed to be drawn to make the toy-form seem 'Accurate' - Imagine if TV Optimus had had the Wheel Wells in his Forearms or Ironhide had no Head - The Pun Names felt lazy to a degree too, even to 8 year old me who didn't even now what a Pun was
I did like Gobots. I remember when the first commercials came out and I was amazed but when Transformers came out it killed it. It put Gobots to the side or on second list.
Still, to me, one of the more interesting aspects of the Gobots most people don’t remember is that they were humanoid at first. The people of Gobotron were organic. Due to the ravages of war, these organic beings put their brains into mechanized bodies. Basically becoming cyborgs. They even mechanized their planet. If you really think about it, it’s kinda dark stuff for a kid’s show and toy line.
It was, but Gobots' space mythology made more sense than Transformers. Gobots were warring humanoids with organic brains transferred to machines, so their motivations, conflicts, and genders make sense. Autobots, Decepticons are Cybertron are all just examples of useless robot technology a la Futurama. Robots fight and die for...reasons, and make more robots wo that those can also fight and die, except sometimes instead of dying they become ghosts that can be reincarnated because...more reasons.

Gobots was my #1 giant transforming robots cartoon and toys. I watched Transformers and enjoyed that show too but the reason I got into Gobots more than Transformers is because I either didn’t know what channel the Transformers cartoon was on, didn’t get the channel (I remember renting a lot of Transdomers vhs tapes in the 80’s), I was in school or other places when it was on or I just didn’t care cause I’d rather watch Gobots as a kid. Now I have both shows on dvd and I enjoy reliving my childhood with both shows every now and then. I remember having a lot of Gobots figures but I never could get some of the more key figures like Turbo and Heatseeker. Since the internet wasn’t a thing back then, you had to get in the car and go to the store to get everything and I guess those figures were just hard to find. I had many Cy-Kill figures but every time I got a new one, I’d break his leg off trying to transform him since his legs were incredibly hard to not break while trying to transform him. Anybody that had a Cy-Kill figure and remembers how he transformed knows what I mean.
I had place for the gobots. Matter of fact Staks filled the role of Ultra Magnus until he was released during TF movie line. so he was in some ways Ultra Magnus's Predecessor in my sand box.
I liked Rock Lords as a kid. I remember one of the first times I spent my allowance, it was on Boulder. I saw it at the Roses store that had an awesome toy section back in the day and played with that thing for years!
Go-Bots gets a lot of flak, but there’s one thing it did do better than Transformers. It didn’t take decades before toys of the fembot characters would hit the shelves.
I as a 80s child loved Gobots. And Rocklords were awesome too. And as also a Transformer fan I can say the older Gobot toys have held up way better then the G1 Transformers line in durability.
I grew up with both, my uncle would collect them. There is a certain charm to both. Go-Bots always felt older it's strange. They also felt simple, it was nice that all the main characters were the same size but their transformations felt simple with their lack of any articulation. To me Transformers packaging had more flash to it. That and Allot of the Transformers Had Guns. How many Go-Bots did you see with that! lol
Glad to see a mostly positive vid of the Gobots! They were one of my favorite toys and cartoon from childhood, and IMO mainly suffered because of the Transformers comparison. Plus they were meant for a younger audience, hence the easier transformations and names. I honestly can't stand the bashing of them, especially the stupid unoriginal unfunny comment "Kmart Transformers" which wasnt funny the first time it was said, seriously come up with your own joke! And then there's the "bootleg transformers", don't get me started on how ridiculous that statement is. LOL yes I get very defensive when it comes to my Gobots. And also, give the cartoon a chance! Had great characters, drama, suspense, action, music, voices, etc... :DDDD
I nevr understood on how exactly to put the stickers on the wings of the planes in Transformers Cuz of the flipping...when robot or plane... sometimes the wings were less in the way when inverted! So i put them stickers Icon sideways!
I loved GoBots as a kid. I had a bunch of the main line and a few of the early Super GoBots like Psycho...which was dope. Still pissed my Mom sold them all for ridiculously cheap while I was away in my late teens. I recently just found out about the strange, seemingly unrelated late Arco line of transforming 🔫 's branded under the GoBots name. I think they came after the cartoons demise. Does Hasbro own those designs as well...or are they in toy limbo?
I had a lot more GoBots than Transformers for one main reason - the toys tended to be a LOT cheaper. The smaller figures like Crasher, Cy-Kill, Leader-1, and Scooter were only a few bucks apiece, whereas Optimus Prime and Megatron were like fifteen or twenty dollars.
Two things; first the go-bots of the cartoon were not robots, but cyborgs (they had human brains) And while Hasbro does have the rights to names and mythology of the characters...Bandai still owns the rights to the toys and their likenesses
The Gobots need some live action treatment just as similar to transformers movie franchise (PLEASE, NO MICHAEL BAY, LOL). I know most people will criticize the Gobots as 3rd class robots and been parodied in a UA-cam video called Transformers v.s Gobots ( which is cool, funny video), Let the Gobots time to shine, we had 6 transformers movies on screen, why not, lol. I had go-bots toys and transformers toys at same time as a kid from the 1980s, i love them both no different. I have bought a comic book of the Gobots 2 weeks ago and really love that these robots are finally getting the attention and recognition they deserve that's long overdue.
Well in Machine Robo, they don't have human-piloted robots. They're still sentient beings but they came from Planet Romulus according to the original story pre-Revenge of Cronos. There are 2 factions - Machine Robos and Devil Invaders. I still think Machine Robo would need to get exposure. It's pretty cool but Gobots might need a little more push.
I saw GoBots first, about a month before I first saw Transformers. I ended up getting a bunch of both, (thanks, Mom and Dad!) and enjoyed them all, even the ones that weren't as good. But TF was definitely better in marketing and overall design.
I am a big Transformers guy but I have always liked Go Bots as well I even still have some of my old toys and some of the rock lords one thing i have always noticed is that the Go Bots spoke more sophisticated than the transformers but always a big fan of 80s and 90s catoons still to this day and a funny thing i have a 16 year old daughter but when she was like 4 are 5 she loved the Go Bots meet the Rock Lords movie
How can be a movie or cartoon of Go Bots? I'm sure Hasbro buyed the rights of the brand and were integrated to transformers. There been mini-cons with Leader 1 and Cy-kill names and stories in IDW with this characters in TF lore.
When I was a kid I loved the go bots I really had no favorites between Go Bots or Transformers I loved them both but as I got older Transformers just seemed to have a more of a nostalgia than Go Bots and honestly I forgot about them until I saw them on UA-cam.
I love Transformers but Gobots have a place in this world! An animated series, animated movie, & maybe a live action movie would be doable right now! Do it and I'm in!
G1 Transformers all the way for me. Better characters. A more epic struggle. Clearer archetypes. Much better animation, music, sound effects, and overall production. The toys were just more fun. Just cooler all around.
No idea why so many fans hate on one or the other. Like, I love Star Wars AND Star Trek, right? I had a shitload of Transformers and a shitload of GoBots when I was 6, and I loved them BOTH.
I wish when they absorbed the gobots, and literally used Leader-1's name for a minicon, they would have made all the gobots into the minicons characters, with their original likeness, and names, instead of just using one of the names and not making it look like that character at all
If I understand the Transformers mythos - and given retcons, I probably don't XP - Unicron probably has or will. Unicron hates Primus, who also has a giant, robot-like body that can transform into a planet. It's actually more complicated than that, but oversimplifying since this is a UA-cam comment. Anyway, Primus is actually Cybertron in most Transformer realities... and Gobotron in *that* reality. Um... surprise?
I still have my late dad's much loved Leader 1 and Cy-Kill and Scooter.

They also felt simple, it was nice that all the main characters were the same size but their transformations felt simple with their lack of any articulation. To me Transformers packaging had more flash to it.
That and Allot of the Transformers Had Guns. How many Go-Bots did you see with that! lol
Tank & Destroyer (the uh...other tank) were about the only ones. Bug Bite the Volkswagon Super GoBot also had a head-mounted laser gun.
:DDDD
You're the first one I've ran into that like the GoBots. I like them too.
@@iamalive.1255 there are other Gobots fans out there hiding!
@@iamalive.1255 I'm a fan too. My favorite GoBot was Scooter.
Didn't Kmart have a better reputation back then?
I think it was actually worse back then lol@@tgdm
I liked the Go-bots and had their toys and Transformers alike. Back then, cartoons and toy merchandising went hand in hand.
i love my gobots. I always teamed them up with the TF's just for fun.
What I want to know is why are the last engineer and the last renegade look like human earthlings , not different type of humanoid beings
I nevr understood on how exactly to put the stickers on the wings of the planes in Transformers
Cuz of the flipping...when robot or plane... sometimes the wings were less in the way when inverted!
So i put them stickers Icon sideways!
A little bit of fact, in the comic book "Transformers origin of Megatron" they used Cykill design in a underground gladiator ring.
YEP.....
Never had any of them but I did watch the cartoon on a regular basis.
I had GoBots and Transformers, I remember hating GoBots and wanting Transformers LOL. There both Classics now tho 👍🏼
Syfy has gotten way better at UA-cam as a whole.
Later episodes explained where they came from. Humanoid beings, that became robots. Much like Head masters, but not.
Anthony Cooper, sounds very interesting. I wonder where I can watch every episode?
No mention of Puzzler, the first combiner robot that was a Gobots creation and later added into the Transformers? Meh
Two things; first the go-bots of the cartoon were not robots, but cyborgs (they had human brains) And while Hasbro does have the rights to names and mythology of the characters...Bandai still owns the rights to the toys and their likenesses
They Could Bring The Show Back On The Air In Re-Runs For Now.
But Yes They Should Come Back.
Hasbro's HQ is in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, not East Providence which is south of Pawtucket.
Where'd you get the comic? Did you buy it online?
@@joslyncarter4813 I had sent to a local comic book store, issue #2 Challenge of the Go-Bots, IDW comics I think.
I miss those days so long ago
When you were talking about how kids like ensignias. You forgot the greatest symbol of them all, ThunderCats!!
Rock Lords! I totally had those. 2 chrome and the 2 headed guy. Funny, my kids are playing with my old go bots now. Memories... ;)
I disagree that gobots are for kids. I did grow up with gobots - and still love them in my 40's.
Transformers , Go Bots and Voltron where the cartoons to watch.
G1 Transformers all the way for me. Better characters. A more epic struggle. Clearer archetypes. Much better animation, music, sound effects, and overall production. The toys were just more fun. Just cooler all around.
Although I wasn't a big fan as a kid, I would love to see The Gobots upgraded in design and incorporated in the G1 universe.
My mom bought me and my brothers the Gobots knock offs the Zybots.🤨🤨🤨🤨
I used to love the Gobots
No idea why so many fans hate on one or the other. Like, I love Star Wars AND Star Trek, right? I had a shitload of Transformers and a shitload of GoBots when I was 6, and I loved them BOTH.
In terms of childhood memories this show wasn’t even in the toy box.
I got these now & still want MOAR!
Also gotta get the show on DVD!
I wish WB would put out the Gobots vs Rocklords movie on DVD!!
I wish when they absorbed the gobots, and literally used Leader-1's name for a minicon, they would have made all the gobots into the minicons characters, with their original likeness, and names, instead of just using one of the names and not making it look like that character at all
Speaking of Gobots, can you also do one for Mighty Orbots?
Why couldn't Unicron eat Gobotron?
Look at Gobotron. How do you know he hadn't?
If I understand the Transformers mythos - and given retcons, I probably don't XP - Unicron probably has or will. Unicron hates Primus, who also has a giant, robot-like body that can transform into a planet. It's actually more complicated than that, but oversimplifying since this is a UA-cam comment. Anyway, Primus is actually Cybertron in most Transformer realities... and Gobotron in *that* reality.
Um... surprise?
It's already been eaten😂😂😂
Actually Unicron started eating Gobotron and it was leaving a bad taste in his mouth, so that's why it looks half eaten.
You ask why Unicron couldn't eat GoBotron? It transforms just like Unicron! HAHAHAHA!🙄 Perhaps it will do the eating! Crunch! Crunch! Crunch!😆😆😆
Funny thing, I actually still have the entire base set of the Rock Lords, my nephew likes to play with them
