Fieseler Storch - Wings Folded for Hangar Space

- I have too many planes! And more on their way! Don't get me wrong, that's a wonderful thing, but we have to make room in our hangars for all of them. One of the things we decided, was to fold the wings on the Fieseler Storch. That will buy us a little space until I can build another hangar. This clip shows the process of folding the Storch wings. We haven't done this in quite some time, so forgive any slight bumbling on our part. Enjoy!
Excellent film footage and commentary.
Fiesler Storch.. in my opinion one of the prettiest little birds in the sky. So fragile and nimble, yet so tough and dependable!!
Oh, what a magnificent little bird she is. Thanks for the demonstration!
Military Aviation History hey I’m subbed to u, just saying hi
What a beauty!
Kermit, I really enjoy this type of video where we can see the details of procedures like this.
These airplanes are so cool. Leading-edge slats on the wing, coordinated flap and aileron. The Germans were engineering the hell out of Bernoulli's principle.
What a neat aircraft! Incredible! Very clever and useful.
Finicky though she was, I still love the little Storch! I look forward to more of your videos.
Of your videos they are so informative . Fantasy of flight we love it ever time we come the Florida. You said too many airplanes you can never have too many airplanes. Keep up the hard work I appreciate everything you do you Have an amazing museum.
Thanks for sharing. I remember when you (Kermit) showed and allowed Tisha to fold the wings on your Wildcat. She loved that. Also great to see fresh paint on the hangars, my complements to the director of maintenance. 😉
I love this aircraft. Thank you for posting this video and allowing us to participate in such an epic part of living history.
Yeesh! [~19:58]
That little screwdriver just a whisker away from puncturing the wing fabric if anything slipped... Gah! I'm crawling around on the floor hiding behind my chair trying to not watch.
Okay. Did we survive unscathed? Whew.
That was not helping my anxiety issues! LOL
boatrat74 I was thinking the same thing, nervously. Turn it around in the hand, don’t take a chance. But it all worked out.
That´s not the only thing. I couldn´t even watch the whole clip. They should really get a Manual and not go the "let´s Pop that pin and see what happens"-Route.
I was thinking about the big mess I would make with Liquid Wrench !
Im really loving Grumman's way of folding wings on their birds after watching this
Kevin Collver Haha That’s what I was thinking! So many (easily lost) bolts and people needed for this German beauty.
Any German officer needing to use the aircraft in a hurry would have to keep a squad of half a dozen mechanics to pull the aircraft out of its
camouflaged hangar ,fumble around in the dark ,dropping lock pins, assembling wings, finding dropped lock pins, refuelling wing tanks.
I bet that they were kept fully assembled most of the time
Beautiful aircraft Kermit.😎
(Hope to visit your establishment next July on a planned trip)
Cheers from Downunder!
Cleverly designed aeroplane. Very nice.
Dear Kermit , I have a lot of space in my hangar, the storch will be welcome, jajaja , but you can count on it. of course if we can use it will be great. all my respects to you and team, excellent work.
The Stroch flew as "the airplane of the day" when we spent the day at FoF - great video, thank you for the upload. Take care Kermit
_That's awesome. Great job of all involved. Hats off !!!_ 👍😉
I think that the Storch is one of your (more precious) aircraft. Have flown in a lot of planes including the F-4 in over 32 years in Aviation. If I could have one pick in flying in an aircraft-I would love to fly a Fieseler Storch!
Too cool. Thank you for posting a very interesting process.
I love the Storch such a cute little plane, I hope it is as fun to fly as is looks.
Wow! The Germans understood Construction and DEconstruction! Thank you for showing that even the Great Kermit Weeks has his moments of frustration with a bloody mechanical thingy! :) But you still keep your humor!
That was cool.
>^..^< Mr. Weeks, a suggestion for consideration - In 1970 when I was stationed in Germany as a USArmy soldier I joined a German weekend glider club in Finthen Germany. One of the common commands installing or removing the wings was "hugla" which ment wiggle. So suggest you consider this possibly as your SOP on the Storch. The person at the end of the wing would just giggle the wing a little and the pin would go in or out easily when the person at the wing pin location was ready to pull or push the pin in/out....
That was hard work! That's quite an airplane!
Great video good sir!! Thank you for sharing these video's with us fellow aviation enthusiasts. I hope you and all of your crew have a Merry Christmas! 👍👍
It was good practice to fold the wings especially when it revealed the rusty pins and broken connector. Probably should be added to the annual inspection checklist.
Well that LOOKED like it should be easy lol. Cool to see how those wings fold up.
Mr. Weeks, what you do is tops. Merely a humble suggestion.. . .
When we Americans see that long legged bird we say Storkkkkk. When Germans see the same bird bird they say exactly what we Americans say. Germans too say Storkkkkk!
We Americans spell the sound with a "K". Germans get the same sound but they use the letters "ch" to indicate the same sound.
All the very best.
WRONG. Mr Geick is Right! Itsa Feeeslar Stohrhhhhh.. The German Pronunciation of the ch is next to impossible in English: its true German ch is pronounced as in the Scottish word loch
You need some anti-seize on those wing pins not oil. I love the Storch. Such a cool concept to fold up a plane. I want to visit your land of too many planes soon. You are having way to much fun up there.
Wow, that starboard pin release! Welcome to struggle street!
I remember seeing this doing stol when i was at fantasy of flight as a kid. It was awesome.
Whew. Thank you for sharing
Nope. Not too many airplanes; not enough hangers. Ah, the fun of owning an antique German aircraft. But what a wonderful one it is. I can see and hear why Mr. Weeks loves it.
Awesome! I as waiting the that screw drive blade to poke into the fabric.
'For two pins, I'd.....'
Getting spare electrical connectors for that beautiful old lady must be quite a challenge.
Looks like fun to me!
The folding wings allowed the Luftwaffe the ability to transport the aircraft via train and ship transport. Very smart design!
William Keith ... by truck as well. BTW the Me 109 specifically had to be constructed with the landing gear on fuselage to make it able to be transported by truck and rail. No extra support fixture needed for the fuselage.
Cool aircraft! 😎🤙
The Storch should compete in next year's STOL Drag event put on by the Flying Cowboys.
fascinating. my fav. Ger. WW2 plane.. never knew you could do that.
Sehr gut, mein Herr!
Puhleeeez open the rest of the museum!
Kermit, I hate to see the Storch tucked away but I sure hate to see the Florida sun ruin it like it does everything else. Man, Florida tries so hard to destroy all we have doesnt it? We get the extremes here. That Storch sure is a looker. Im kinda surprised they didnt put bigger tires on it with all its capability. Thanks for the video Kermit.
I'm glad I didn't have to go thru all that to fold F-4E wings. Cool Video.
CurrieS2A3 one of the Best things about going from Recce RF-4Cs to E models was the wingfold switch in the well! Left side I believe???
@@joetexas1546 Not on Es...a speed handle and 3 sets of strong arms was the only way. I dreamed about Reece's..especially easy battery changes.
Most times I changed the acft battery with the seat in and all the way down(i was 135 pounds soaking wet)!!!
Just a thought... maybe make up a wing stow/unstow procedure & checklist... and mark/tag those struts better? Bet the whole thing could be done in a few minutes if in 'practice'. Just my .02¢ worth, cool videos, thanks!
That is a great airplane for what they designed it for. Better than our L1 and 2.
Looks like you threw it in the restoration area next to the BF-108. You say there are new things coming. I'm certainly excited!
Just goes to show, We all learn something new..everyday. Who’d thought I would learn today the intricacies off wing folding a Fieseler Storch :)
Buddy we struggled together there, but at the end the wings folded well. Very nice...
Awesome airplane thanks for the education.
You can NEVER have too many airplanes! And did I see a finished vertical stab/rudder for the 108?! muHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Eggscellent.
You used far less "colorful language" than I would have! LOL Man, If I ever hit the Lotto I'm buying a Storch or replica one
our mechanic wouldve turned this entire video into one long "bleeeep" fest
"Colorful metaphors"...😜
It probably only responds to german swearing .....?
Beautiful plane😍
Colored tape to matched pieces guys 👍
Love your videos Kermit
I have Too many airplanes. I don't believe those words will ever leave my lips. Very first world problem.(; ). Thanks for the insight.
Kermit you can never have too many airplanes.
Lmao @ the bowl..... dont forget to lay some straw for the newborn if you leave her sittin there for too long, you know, with the other planes right there ;)
One of the few World War Two aircraft I still hold hope I can get one day original or reproduction. Such a good looking bird.
Beautifull plane - 80 year old construction
Clever design
What a fascinating video, the geometry of some of those slave jury struts must have taken some working out and to be honest I never realised that the wings folded on the Storch, another interesting insight from Fantasy of Flight,I just hope that you will not wish to fly it soon down to see the Lockheed Vega Kermit ? keep those pins and levers well lubricated for the future its a treasured historical machine for sure.
Those flap and aileron disconnects look
surprisingly like cuff links.
At about 15 and a half minutes, another reason
to move to Arizona.
steve
Kermit is like the Jay Leno of collecting planes instead of cars.
When I was a student pilot, I was taught the advantages of a printed check list.
And that's where you'll put it's bowl, thank you!
Watching Kermit struggle with that red Tee pin I kept saying to the computer.. Kermit it goes to the right!.. spray some lube on it, it goes to the Right! But folding the wings isn't exactly a push button operation like most carrier planes.
good video
Dang Kermit let your guys do the work. Always cutting in on them while they are mid swing.....cool planes tho!
Another great video, however 21.24, you can never have too many aeroplanes!
Liquid Wrench !! I’ll bet the Krauts got some engine oil off of the engine dip stick to lube it !
Would be great to see how quickly the Krauts folded the wings !
I am in love with your bird.
Here is a suggestion, how about making a detailed check list of the chronological steps to fold and unfold the wing. It has happened to me that although I know where thing go, but for a protracted time not performing the process I just forget. ie, which way do I turn the wing pin? R or L, do I push in before pulling out? Etc.
Das goot ya ya !
Kermit I was sitting her twisting my hand to the right say this away Kermit and my wife said WHAT??? 🤣👍🏼
*"Too many airplanes. Such a dilemma." -- Kermit Weeks* 😁😁😁😁
Thanks for the demonstration!

Very clever design. Leave it to German engineering to come up with that.
What a wonderful aircraft.
Someting six young German mechanics could have done in under three minutes back when they were all in practice. :-) I notice you probably could have got the electrical connectors loose through the hand-hole also.
I do that to my Kitfox every time I fly it. By myself. Lol. But good job guys
As a german, it makes my heart bleeding to see al these german planes in the US😭😭😭 Kermit you have an awesome collection over there and you are such a nice guy! I love your Videos!
Maybe i come over the big water someday to visit Fantasy of Flight.
HORRIDO!!!
I would have lost my Jesus taking that thing apart. 🤣
Schön!
This would have been a 5 minute clip in the luftwaffe's u-tube feed. lol
Was this plane used on the aircraft carrier ? why they design this plane to fold the wings?
Would you fly in this after these guys have 'reassembled' it????
BF-108!!!!!! BF-108!!!
I remember reading years ago someone comparing the very general purpose Piper Cub that the US Army purchased for the same role. Vastly cheaper to produce,it was less specialized and did not share the spectacular abilities the Storch possessed. Kermit's airplane has a number of very very Germanic overengineered features a gadgeteer like myself finds fascinating. Really want to thank you guys for the real time fold. Working out what memory and wear/corrosion leave imperfect.
No engineered product is perfect, there are always compromises somewhere. I look at those very small wheels and tires up front and wonder what decision led to that . Footage of Alaska super Cubs shows they install what might even be DC 3 tires. No one can think of everything, but those small roller skates leave me puzzled.
Great video. Wish I was there. Want someone who can only drink coffee and get in the way ?
And then the Russians repurposed their training U-2 biplanes. All of those planes did fit their role just fine, there was just many ways of going around it, and it really illustrates things about the stereotypical nature of the nations involved haha.
what? too many airplanes? you can never have too many airplanes, just not enough hangers!
Old airplanes and the occasional cursing totally justified I promise you. Now go get some rum.
Looks like the same type of aircraft used in the 1976 movie, The Eagle Has Landed, staring Robert Duvall, Donald Sutherland and Michael Caine.
Mühendislik harikası
I would have thought that each pin would be on a piece of cable . to avoid misplacing those "loose" pins and cotter pins so they stay relative to their parts or locations.
Why would you dislike the video? There are some strange people out there
I think there are people that dislike every video.
Great Video yet again Kermit! Keep doing the great work! Nice to see your mustang! Hopefully your A model mustang is progressing?
Fred Karno comes to mind...
My great uncle is Gerhard Fiesler
Stuck pin? Florida sunshine did it. Just an every day thing for the wrench twisters.
Ahh the stink of LPS2
my favorite.
Quick somebody write down what those pins were used for so you remember for next time!
I can see it already that when it comes time to reverse these steps and get the plane ready to fly again, it’s gonna be a big pain to get those pins put back into place

Folds up the wings just like on my Kit Fox Yours are just bigger then mine.........
