    I got most of these new as a kid. Excitebike and Golf I got later used, but the rest I got either for Christmas, a birthday, or saving allowance from cleaning the house for seemingly ages... with one exception.
    Dr. Mario I did get brand new, but not through any of those avenues. Back in the '80s and '90s, we used to save up Kool-Aid points from the backs of packets of Kool-Aid. They had a rewards catalog, kinda like with Flag Points on GI Joe packages. We'd get points from friends, family, neighbors, people from church... and with those sweet Kool-Aid points, we got Dr. Mario, NES Play Action Football, and our NES Satellite.
    As others have said, the '80s were objectively the most fun time to be a little boy. He-Man, GI Joe, Transformers, Robotech, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Wars when it was still good... and it meant you got to be a teenager during the 16 and 32 bit days.

    good video but as a Canadian, one thing I’ve learned to question over the years is the narrative that “nintendo saved gaming”, particularly from my British retro enthusiast friends. That whole crash was mostly an American thing and in Europe in particular a non-factor. They had a much more local and competitive industry between Sinclair, Amstrad, Commodore, and Atari. Unlike the monopoly that Nintendo largely had over here. By the time the NES launched in Europe it was largely seen as outdated with expensive overpriced games compared to the micros. If Nintendo hadn’t dominated the market with anti competitive practices my guess is that both the Commodore 64 and Sega Master System would have largely filled the void and would have gotten the bulk of 3rd party support. In Canada at least the C64 was a pretty solid 2nd place contender (selling more widely than the Sega Master System even). Even here in Canada when I first started hearing game journalists talking about the game crash of 83 I was always like, “what crash?”. I lived through the era and I don’t remember it. Platforms like the ColecoVision/Adam, C64, Coco2, were widely sold and available at all the major retailers here like Zellers, Canadian Tire circa 1984-1986 and I don’t recall any gap between that and the eventual availability of the NES. It was a pretty smooth transition. Again I think that crash was almost exclusively an American phenomenon with retailers no longer stocking consoles/micros and games for a few years. I do vaguely recall my family driving down to Grand Forks in North Dakota a few times and retailers there largely clearing out inventory really cheaply in the bargain bins (thanks for the great deals), but that was certainly not happening back home in Winnipeg.

    • @Fortefyre
      @Fortefyre  8 днів тому +1

      Yeah asbsolutely, it was the AMERICAN video game crash after all lol. In Japan they called it "atari shock" and I'm not familiar with how the European audiences dealt with it. What I do know, was that 2nd Generation Japan games were severely limited, the American Games perpetually saturated the market, and once that alone led to consumer confidence in home computing being at an all time high, in the US the Commodore 64, was able to be raised in price because people relied on it more than the 2600, Colecovision, Intellivision, all of the crazy systems. I will say, if Mario hadn't been created, Sega would have likely dominated the market, as you all had a SEVERE market interest in the Sega Master System. Almost any European friend I speak too, talk about the SMS, and how the Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum and more were important. That's a great insight you've provided today!

    • @TransCanadaPhil
      @TransCanadaPhil 8 днів тому +1

      @@Fortefyre the situation in Europe was very interesting, and I’ve learned a lot from UK youtubers like “Kim Justice” or “RMC Retro Man Cave” (I even visited his gaming museum when I visited the UK last year in Stroud). They basically had their own home grown industry. They have no nostalgia for the NES, instead you’ll hear all about games like Dizzy, Manic Miner, and Jet Set Willy for the various microcomputer platforms like the ZX Spectrum, Commodore Amiga, or Amstrad CPC. I myself recently imported one of those new “ZX Spectrum Next” computers that were recently custom manufactured for a Kickstarter as a “new” retro inspired microcomputer that can play all the old Spectrum games plus a lineup of all new enhanced Spectrum Next games. I’m having a blast playing through some of these games that we were largely denied access to back in the day here in North America. It’s really shifted my perspective over the past few years regarding how much over-credit
      Nintendo gets for “saving” the industry. Rather I feel now that Nintendo largely abused its market dominance in North America and largely shut out other competitors that were available in other markets and were quite successful and might have been in North America had we had a more fair and competitive industry. We know for instance that once Nintendo stopped its exclusivity conditions on 3rd parties, companies like Capcom and Konami did release games on the Genesis (Contra Hard Corps, Castlevania Bloodlines, Street Fighter 2), plus Capcom was always willing to license games directly to Sega for them to directly publish (Ghouls and Ghosts, Strider, Final Fight on the Sega CD). Its logical to assume that had Nintendo not been there to enforce its illegal exclusivity contracts that
      both Capcom and Konami would have developed and released games for Sega much earlier on systems like the Master System. That would have made a huge difference in the North American market in 1986/87. Even Nintendo themselves were 3rd party publishers initially, for example the pack-in cartridge for the ColecoVision was a fully licensed great conversion of Donkey Kong from Nintendo. Had Nintendo of Japan not bothered to release the Famicom/NES in North America we still would have gotten Nintendo’s games on systems like the Colecovision (as they did with Donkey Kong) or if the Master System had gained traction Nintendo would have released their games on the Master System as they clearly showed they were quite willing to develop and release games on other companies consoles (ie. ColecoVision, Atari 2600, Commodore Vic 20) before they had their own console in North America. So now when I look at it, I now kind of think the NES was kind of irrelevant in a way if you understand what I mean. Both Nintendo’s first party and 3rd party games would likely have been available in any case if you look at it from an “alternative universe” perspective. Nintendo would just have continued to be a 3rd party developer for systems like the Sega Master System or perhaps the Commodore 64 as they had previously been for both Coleco, Atari, and Commodore. Konami and Capcom would most certainly have been Sega 3rd party developers years earlier. Cheers! 🥂

The Super Mario Trilogy is one of the most consistently amazing game series in history, and releasing the American version of Super Mario 2 probably saved the series as the Lost Levels is in my opinion an inferior version of the original with innovation that impeded enjoyment instead of enhancing gameplay.

    I was born in 1988 and I grew up with the SNES and at the N64. Fortunately our family also had the Genesis and the PS1. Loved playing the Sega channel. But I do remember my family having the original NES four time. That was before I decide to actually start playing video games. I was just watching them play Tecmo Bowl And there was some kind of platformer game I remember watching them play but I've never seen it reappear on like the we virtual console or switch online. But the problem is I don't put the game was called. I actually remember what the music from the game sounded like though. I actually thought that legend of kage might have been the game but no it's an entirely different game.
    So yeah I grew up with the SNES mostly. Love the N64 as well of course. And yeah there were some games in the PS1 I also enjoyed quite a lot. First game I ever played was Super Mario World and the first game ever beat actually was on the Genesis and that was Sonic the Hedgehog. Eventually my brother I guess for whatever reason we didn't have the original NES anymore I'm not sure what was the reason, but he got the top loader NES with the bone NES controllers that were designed like the SNES controllers. That top loader was cool. And that was actually when I did start playing NES games.

    I cracked open brand new every game here when I was a kid except for Golf, Dr. Mario & Tetris.
    Golf, my best friend already owned, and I thought well of it. I just never got a copy for myself until I became an adult. I believe I now have four complete in box copies.
    Dr. Mario, I didn't think well of, since I was not a fan of puzzle games in the day. Also, I now have a couple of copies of it, and I think it is a pretty swell game.
    Tetris, I wouldn't buy a copy of it on NES because to me, at the time, Tetris sacredly belonged on Gameboy only, and I saw it as sacrilege to have it on NES as well. But, yes, today I have a nice crisp copy, and my disdain for the NES version has entirely dissappeared.

    x My siblings and I were the only kids in our area that bought the Nintendo Action Set with our own money (earned from odd jobs).

    o Super Mario Bros. and Duckhunt from the action set.

    I was a huge fan of NES golf back in the day all the way through today. Here’s a game designed by Miyamoto, programmed by Iwata with sound by Koji Kondo. Is there any game ever with a better perigee? Note that the golf course in Wii Sports/Resort (golf and frisbee golf) harkens back to NES golf, so this game has even more sales than anyone realizes.

Im kind of surprised duck tales, tmnt 1, or top gun weren't on the list, cause back then everyone had those. My standout memories of cracking into a fresh box I just got were Castlevania 1, mega man 2, and super Mario 3. After watching The Wizard in theaters, there was no excitement that could match actually popping it into the nes at home for the first time, brilliant marketing
