    You said that Van Halen always gives you a good hook. Joe Satriani (another great guitarist) once said that Eddie has the gift of melody. He does a lot of weird stuff, but whatever it is hooks you in because it's deeply musical. Another great reaction! Can't wait for For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge!

    I’ve been a VH fan since I bought their debut album. Instantly hooked by the sounds of EVH - RIP.
    When Sammy Hagar joined…something magical happened. Not only did our ears get the treasure of a truly great rock vocalist, but the songwriting became less juvenile…sophisticated! The compositions allowing Eddie the freedom to return to his first mastered instrument, the piano. In my opinion, this is the best Van Hagar era, and I was so happy I’d never have to hear nor see Roth again. I made a point to buy OU812 on the day it was released!

    • @shawntripp4591
      @shawntripp4591 Місяць тому

      Sophisticated. Perhaps you and I have a different understanding of the definition. Ham fisted? Earnest? Straining to appear profound or sophisticated. Definitely. Sammy was even more juvenile than Dave, it's just that Dave did it with a wink and artfulness. Sammy's apparent earnest mask is just that, a transparent mask. Nothing at all grown up about straight on up to her lunch pail or them human toys. Zero artistic credibility.

    "Black & Blue" is top of the line VH & so is "Finish What Ya Started". The ballad was good. For a slower VH groove, "When it's Love" was pop gold and had big radio play. It hit #1 on the charts.

    Both versions of Van Halen are great. I love both! The Roth era is raw and edgey. It was something new back in the 70's. Sammy era was polished and more pop rock because at the time the musin was changing back in the 80's. They were both perfect at their moment in time! The thing that gets me is that, alot of people don't give Sammy any credit for keeping Van Halen alive. That's what he did! Without Sammy Van Halen would have died. We all saw and heard Van Halen 3. What a fucking mess! Both Van Halen were great, just sucks that we all have to get old!

    Interesting theory out there about the album title. Former VH vocalist David Lee Roth had released a record called 'Eat 'Em and Smile' after leaving the band where he dresses up as a headhunter cannibal type character on his album cover. Van Halen's next album after that was this record here and since the band was beefing with Roth in the press a lot like rappers do today, there's a theory that OU812 is really a tongue in cheek response to Roth's album title as in 'Oh You Ate One Too?"

      Because we felt cheated out of more hard, nasty, swaggery rock instead of love, love, love - not that that was all they played with Sam. I liked Sammy a lot prior to his coming into VH. Saw him twice in concert. Standing Hampton is an amazing record. Went to every tour with Sam. We were also just mad that Dave left. I've often said that had Dave been more like that guy on the cover of the first album instead of the vaudevillian kook he ended up being, VH could've challenged Zeppelin for greatest. Now they are part of the Trinity - LZ, AC/DC, VH. Also, many who question as you do, don't understand the initial impact. It was literally an atomic bomb detonation. All of 80's rock was a reaction to VH. P.S. Even Joe Dirt said "not Van Hagar!".

      I agree totally. Both eras are the best rock and music in general. I think the Sammy era was musically where Eddie’s wanted to go. He was tired of the party band thing and hated doing covers.

    • @shawntripp4591
      @shawntripp4591 Місяць тому

      The biggest reason I now hate on Sammy is because of his mouth. Constantly running down Dave throughout the decades. Like he needs to convince people he belongs. Dave doesn't do that. If he really believed in his standing with the fanbase he wouldn't keep telling us how much better he was than Dave. Lost so much respect for him because of that behavior. I loved the Van Hagar era in the early stages of it, because I couldn't understand it like I do know. That era just hasn't aged well.

The Sammy Hagar years of Van Halen are my favorite by a long shot! 5150 and 0U812 were great albums! Dave was to much of a prima donna. I describe the Dave era vs Sammy era as, "Van Halen went from punk to prog". Meaning they went from the more gritty, edgy, shorter form song writing, to the longer more "progressive" deep thinking form of songwriting. Neither is better, they're just different. And all of it showcases Eddie's musical genius. For any flaws he had (he's human, c'mon, we all have flaws) he was truly gifted.
    Mine All Mine has many layers to it. I hear one or two guitar tracks along with the synth track, throughout the whole song, plus the vocals and drums. That's fantastic song writing, how it's all knitted together in a musical tapestry. In fact Sammy had complained at one point that Eddie's music is too dense; there's too much music in what he writes and there's little to no room for the vocals. But in my view that's why we listen, to hear Van Halen's MUSIC. Because no one else made music like they did.

    Sammy gave VH more musical flexibility. Especially going into the 90’s. VH never would’ve lasted the 90’s with Dave. The cultural landscape changed dramatically and his over the top ego driven attitude was out of fashion by then. Dave’s solo career took a nosedive by 92. But VH managed to continue being relevant.

    Love this album (though I like "5150" better) and I LOVE Sammy's voice, but "Sucker in a 3 Piece" and "Source of Infection" are throw-away tracks. Musically, they're awesome, but lyrically/melody-wise, yikes. "Blowout!"?? wtf? Seems like they were added to the album, just to balance out the "softer" songs.
    Replace those two songs with two from Sammy's solo album "Give to Live" and "Eagle's Fly" (with Eddie, Al and Mike playing, of course) would have made OU812 a WAY better overall album, imo.

    David did not need to hit the high notes! His version of “high notes” were his screams and howls regardless of polish! He was animalistic with incredible energy and that was to be witnessed live. Something that STRANGELY you have yet to visit? Curious as to why no one has even suggested that Mugs watch the live in Oakland footage? It’s almost freaky that no one has even mentioned what is called the Holy Grail of early Van Halen live footage???
    SMH 🤦🏻‍♂️… With that said, Dave was a martial artist/ gymnast who had a rap with the VH audience that was very personal. He was a hard partying cat who captured all the sensibilities of the era. Don’t get me wrong I love VH with Sammy as well. He had serious vocal chops and his own type of swag but to me it only translated audibly… To me Sammy didn’t have BOTH the unique, dynamic audio and visual sexuality of Dave. VH in the old days was a traveling circus and their show needed to be witnessed live. They throttled audiences in the late 70’s and early 80’s like no other. But I will never diss Sammy. The 70’s and early 80’s had its own unique vibe. The late 80’s brought about change and Sammy fit that bill perfectly. Love both eras!!!! regardless of polish! He was animalistic with incredible energy and that was to be witnessed live. Something that STRANGELY you have yet to visit? @michaelpalermo354 you are not paying attention! We have been asking him to watch DLR live and the Oakland 81 concert - over and over. He finally said today at this live stream that he would do it (not the whole concert but there are links to choice songs.) We all need to buy him a coffee immediately to cement the deal!

      @@vermontmoocow Huh.. I pay attention to the comments often and I haven’t seen one request for live in Oakland? With that said, I dont watch his videos in there entirety because he talks quite a bit so I may have missed during this episode where he agreed to give it a listen but it’s only three songs, so what’s the big deal?

    Mugs, it is better when youre not dissing Dave and the original era. The band was not limited. You should probaby listen to more Dave solo music. It was more eclectic and took more chances and wasnt as focused on being as "commercial" as VH with Sam. The fanbase is divided, and a lot of it has to do with Sam fans always bashing Dave's vocals. There's more to singing than just hitting high notes. I guarantee Sam will never be able to sing Big Bad Bill Is Sweet William Now like Dave did, just as Dave couldnt ever sing Dreams like Sam. 🙄

      Could not agree more. People are ignorant to what really made DLR special and Sammy pedestrian. That eclecticism.

    Roth is a narcissist- Roth is about Roth. Sammy is about the music and the “Team”. Eddie wasn’t weak, he just wanted to make music…make sense? Congratulations to Sammy, he just got his Star on the Hollywood Walk yesterday.

      Roth is a narcissist, but Sammy is as well, just more covert about it, which is worse. Dave always put the band first, it was his idea to call it VH. People talk about Dave's lack of musical ability and limited range, but he took them in so many different directions musically. Everyone talks about Ed wanting to evolve musically, but they regressed with Sammy. Creative differences between Ed and Dave, but don't tell me they grew artistically. Ed just never really accepted Dave's cultured musical influences.

    Take everything with a grain of salt with Sam cuz he flat out lies from interview to interview. He's like Jekyl and Hyde. One interview he's bashing Ed or Dave and the next interview he loves Ed or he likes Dave and has no beef with Dave. Grade A bipolar is what Sam is.

    The level of the music is very weak compared to the level of your voice , so when you pause to talk your voice is blasting compared to the music. They should at least be equal. I want to feel the music. Instead I Have to keep the music low so you don't blast me with the talking. I was looking forward to rocking out and hearing the reaction. Just can't get into this when it's like this.
