I just realized that your label at the top with the name of the bag is how much longer you have reviewing that bag. So if I wanted to fastforward over one bag, it was SUPER easy to do so. NIce touch.

I have the Peak Design as my travel backpack. I like the simple sleek design without all the stuff on the outside. I snapped the top to it to make it look smaller and for a sleeker contour rather than boxy looking. The main reason I chose this backpack was for the security features it provides when you are traveling in crowded public spaces. Unfortunately this is something none of the UA-cam backpack reviewers talked about...

I like how you reviewed a variety of travel backpacks. I bought a Tortuga Setout 35L women's backpack in January, 2020 for a 10-day trip to India and Nepal before the COVID-19 shutdown. Since I was carrying 25 lbs worth of clothes & toiletries, the load-lifter straps made it easy to walk around with this on my back. Other travel backpacks from LL Bean and ebags lacked them. Sadly, it looks like Tortuga no longer makes the Setout, so I hope that the Outbreaker will perform as well or better than the Setout.

I found the Setout really uncomfortable. It just didn’t sit on my back right, and I wound up returning it. I have the Nomatic Travel Pack now, and it’s pretty good but I’m not crazy about the material and feel like some valuable space is lost with the curved top. I’m thinking about trying the Taskin One soon.

I have never understood why backpack producers add the shoe compartment. If you put your shoes in, it takes almost half of the space of your whole backpack. Instead of just putting your shoes in a shoe bag and placing them wherever they fit most in your backpack, they invented this pain in the ass compartment which takes up space even when unused.

    • @Nomads.Nation

I picked the Tortuga Set Out Divide as it goes from 26 to 34 litres. The expansion area is in the top, so not extra depth in the main compartment. Fitting in most camera cube isn't possible. When I also got a nice out fit to go to a wedding I needed 40 litres, although possibly the Setout 35 litres might have worked. I used a 40 litre packable duffel. I also had a small 17 litre to trek around with and on flights packed all my tech gear (cameras, lenses, tablet, mouse, battery razor, electric toothbrush) into that and the rest went cargo. Internal flights had a 7kg limit and the total was over 13kg even leaving the daily carry backpack would still have been over 12kg. Two bag travel splits up the weight and in cargo I can also store a multitool. Although I was in the tropics (India) going further north the late evenings had some bitter cold winds. A duffle and daily carry back pack works. The Setout converts to a carry bag, over the shoulder bag or backpack. So do a number of other bags including some from Tom Bihn and Nomatic.
I had to arrange a USA postal address to get the Tortuga forwarded to the UK. Nomatic is currently not exporting to the UK. New UK and EU import regulations and delays in getting companies in other countries registration for VAT has been the cause and postal costs and red tape increased in the past 15 years.

I've got 2.5 weeks in Asia coming up, gunna be hitting up a lot of trains, busses, trails, mountains, restaurants, cabins and more... I've chosen the Mission Workshop Sanction (20L) as my weapon of choice... It's probably actually the wrong choice for most people due to its size, I'm kinda doing it as a challenge to see what I can really get away with cutting out of my loadout, and if it really does prove impractical, I have an Aer TP2 to fall back on... Either way, that's just one more thing making me look forward to this trip.

Most airlines only allows 7kg for carry-on baggage, so ideally a "one bag carry-on" backpack should weigh less than 1.4kg, or 20% of the weight limit.

I'm glad someone brought this up I've noticed the same issue searching for a carry on between 25-30L that is as light as possible to maximise what can be put into it and remain under the 7kg limit. The Aer travel pack 3 @1.87kg, The Able Carry Max @1.7kg, the Nomatic Travel pack @1.88kg are all far too heavy
An extra 0.5 kg of clothes or equipment by going for a lighter bag is definitely worth it for me.
Some options I've been looking at are the Thule Aion 28L @1.23kg, the Alpaka Elements Pro 26L @1.2-1.3kg, the Bellroy Transit Backpack 28L @1.1Kg or the Able Carry Daybreaker 2 which is ultra light for 25L @660-718grams.. I hope these are covered in any upcoming video with more emphasis on lighter, simpler and less feature packed bags which just seems to add unnecessary bulk and weight when the real goal is carrying as much as possible in one bag

I've actually never reviewed a 50+L bag, so I can't say. I will say that Tomtoc bags are notoriously smaller than advertised, and the lack of clamshell opening makes it even smaller. I imagine if you compared a 40L Tortuga Travel Backpack to a Tomtom 40L, it would feel like the Tortuga gave you 50% more packing space

  • @babycakes8434

Thanks for the comment! It totally depends on the airline tho. These bags would never be allowed as a personal item on budget airlines like Spirit and RyanAir. LUGGAGE TIPS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16
Tie three or four colored ribbons around the handle to your luggage to warn others that this is NOT THEIR luggage. People grab luggage at the turnstile and take it home before you ever see it. ua-cam.com/video/q-gLsegazCs/v-deo.html
Anywhere you put your bag, it could be grabbed in error. Example: overhead compartment, unloaded from the bus, at the hotel lobby, at the airport turnstile...
    ua-cam.com/video/4NfX2W4DN7E/v-deo.html
These ribbons make your luggage different and EASY TO SPOT when the piece is surrounded by 35 other cases unloaded from the bus. Using 4 ribbons make it immediately different than other cases with 1 ribbon.
Use 1” wide ribbons 14” long and not longer. Cut the ends at 45 degrees.
Tie to the base of the handle, tie to the metal buckle. Thus, it will not slip along the handle.
Tie the ribbons as a sandwich, as if they were one ribbon. Use a man’s tie, a half Windsor knot for the best look. After it is tied on, the total length of the ribbons will be about 5 inches from the handle. This is too short to catch on anything such as rollers.
Scissor cut trim the ribbons to cascading different lengths after they are tied. Put a drop of Super Glue at the end.
If each ribbon is slightly a different length by 1/4” the color layers will all show up no matter how they drape.
You can see these ribbons from 40 feet away.
Perhaps tie TWO handles or RINGS top and side of the case.
Tie using a HALF WINDSOR KNOT to the metal buckle ring of the handle.
    Learn Half Windsor knot tying:
It is the 2nd example in this video
    ua-cam.com/video/X0yh5rKB9lE/v-deo.html
    This knot does not loosen.
Put your phone number on one ribbon using a fine point permanent Sharpie.
    Example: “Owner 454-333-7878”
    No personal name necessary.
No address necessary on the ribbon.
Choose one ribbon with an unusual pattern or fabric to really make it unique. The 4th ribbon could be black color.
Stand by the output port of the turnstile to reduce the chance of someone else grabbing your piece.
Tie your backpack, skiies, duffel bag, carry-on, and what ever else with matching ribbons-even your computer case bag.
If you are a Travel Agent, you could hot gold stamp one ribbon with your name and phone number. Send them a set of ribbons, red and blue and BLACK to your customer as a gift. Record this gift in your database so you don’t duplicate yourself.
Buy a gold hot embossing machine. Gold emboss your business name on the BLACK ribbon. Put the customer’s name on it if possible.
    Pleasant color combinations:
    Red, white and blue
    Chartreuse and purple and orange
    Orange and light blue
    Orange and yellow
    Gray and pink
    Green and yellow
    Red and Green
    Red and Gold
Light blue and light green and white
The 4th ribbon could be white, gray, black, tan
    Tip #2 PICTURE RECORD
Take a cell phone picture of the ribbon tied on. Then another picture of the full luggage piece. Take a picture of the interior. You now have a way to communicate “what it looks like” if someone is tasked with searching for it.
You can show this picture to the searcher or attach a picture to your report for lost luggage.
Take this picture outside in direct sun not under neon lights.
    Tip #3 INSIDE IDENTITY
Place a strip of colored duct tape on the inside lining to your case. Put TWO pieces in DIFFERENT places such as INSIDE a pocket to the case. If you dare, put your phone number DIRECTLY ON THE FABRIC Liner of the case WITHOUT USING TAPE. Or, put your name and phone number on this tape. If all identity is stripped from your case, you have this to show. If someone steals it and rips off identity tags, you can show the police officer the inside tape...
To be sneaky about the tape, put your phone number on the STICKY side of the tape. Nothing is on the surface side of this tape.
    Tip #4 HIDDEN IDENTITY
Put your phone number on a 2” x 1/2” piece of fabric or plastic sheet. Use colored Duct tape, such as black or red or neon, to tape this message to the top side of the handle. This message is under the tape hidden from view. The lettering does not touch the sticky part. Wrap it 2-3 times. Also include Tips 1,2,3 above. If you need to prove identity of the case, just unwrap it and show.
    Tip #5 ADDING UNIQUENESS
    Use 4 ribbons
    Add 1 designer ribbon
    colored duct taped handle
Stencil SPRAY PAINT a 2” or smaller stencil letter or number or word or your initials to the suit case exterior surface in addition to using all the other ideas here. Stencil spray the BOTTOM OF THE CASE as well.
Stencil spray paint a letter to the TOP ribbon.
Use ribbons that are wider or more narrow than 1”.
Put a travel sticker on the case.
    Tip #6 WEIGH YOUR OWN
Scales accuracy varies at different airports. If you are even 1 pound over, you pay. So, regulate yourself. Found on Ebay, buy a
    HAND HELD DIGITAL SCALE
    It is less than $15.
    Tip #7 GPS TRACKING DEVICE
Duct tape to an inside pocket a GSM GPS Tracking device. Find them on Ebay. Your iphone can tell you where your luggage is.
Is it in another city? ua-cam.com/video/qJkUSNIBsP0/v-deo.html
    HomingPIN tracker ua-cam.com/video/V96ADrVzhys/v-deo.html
    Gego Tracker ua-cam.com/video/EI0ARnEqq-w/v-deo.html
    Worldwide Tracker ...GSM, Wifi, Bluetooth
    USB rechargeable
Tip #8 OLD TAGS, YOUR ITINERARY
Remove old trip tags before you arrive at the airport. Remove confusion.
Put a copy of your trip itinerary in an outside pocket so the agent can redirect the bag.
Ask the travel agent to send you copies.
Photograph all travel documents using your cell phone.
    Tip #9 FLIGHT SAFETY
Put laptops, cameras and jewelry in your CARRY-ON. ua-cam.com/video/fQLIwVXa3oU/v-deo.html
Tip #10 LET LUGGAGE FOLLOW YOU
    Choose non stop flights.
Choose connecting flights of at least 90 minutes so luggage has time to be transferred to the next plane.
Compare white luggage destination tag city code to your itinerary for accuracy.
Tip #11 TAKE SCREEN SHOTS OF THESE TIPS
Then share them with your friends. Include the Tube Video seen here also.
    Tip #12 PHOTOGRAPH THIS
    Your travel plan
    Vaccine Passport
    Hotel confirmations handwritten by you.
Your luggage, inside and out. Include unusual words spray paint stenciled on luggage by you. Show a close up of ribbon colors.
Your destination luggage tag, bar code tag
    Receipts for payment of trip.
If you lose paper versions, you have a backup.
Passcode lock your cell phone in case it is lost.
    Tip #13 LUGGAGE DESTINATION TAG
Check the accuracy of the white luggage tag code against your itinerary. You may be sending your luggage to the wrong city.
    BAGGAGE THEFT VIDEO

    ua-cam.com/video/oPPQzu84ahc/v-deo.html
Tip #15 IF YOU SELL LUGGAGE
