  • In this video I discuss my new 2017 CB1100EX and compare it to my 2014, which I owned for over 36,000 miles. I'll compare and contrast and do a brief overview so whether you own one or are interested, I hope there's something in the video for you.

    A couple of years ago I woke up one morning and I was 60 years old, and I realized I had never bought a new bike, despite a lifetime of riding. So to remedy that I went down to my local dealer and found a leftover 2014 CB1100. $7000 out the door and on the road. Sorted !

      They make great bikes! I think they've made more internal combustion engines than any other manufacturer, so they have the experience! And I think with the CB they go the styling down for sure.

    I have a 2017 cb1100ex to, bought in June of 2017 at a dealer here in Arizona. Part of the reason it feels a little more responsive is there was an approx. 6 hp increase in the 17 model. Apparently it comes from the new air intakes, the new smaller exhaust pipes and a few other modifications they made on the 17 model. It’s still not a super bike, it’s been dyno tested at between 89 and 90 hp but has plenty of power for me. Thanks for another great video, I particularly like the cb1100 ones you’ve done and referred others to them when they were contemplating buying a cb1100. Hoping you make more.

    • @iamheero

      Frank McCleese Hey Frank, Thank you! That makes sense, I assumed it was mostly the exhaust but freer flowing intake will help a lot too, that was one of the major performance bottlenecks on the older models! I'm really liking my EX so far as well, ride safe!

    I have one….a 2016. I love it so much that I am looking for a second one. Mostly because I don’t seem a lot of them about. I also have a GSXS750 2021 and that’s fun but there is something about taking your time on the CB1100. Don’t get me wrong, it can mix it up with the best of them, just that it lends itself to enjoying the scenery. :)

    I own and love a 2017 CB1100EX and would agree with most everything you said UNTIL you got to the end. This is NOT a good starter bike. People need to learn to walk before they run! There are too many motorcycle fatalities amongst riders who have been licensed for less than two years. Everybody THINKS they are a hero until things quickly turn south and they haven't yet developed the skills to deal with the unforeseen. Although there are definitely more powerful bikes out there, this thing can put some serious hurt on you if a hurry if you don't know what you're doing. As far as the weight goes, I've personally never found the CB1100EX particularly heavy, although my other bike is a 900+ pound Goldwing. One thing that has astounded me about the CB1100 is the fuel economy which is in a word, exceptional. Better than the CB450SC Nighthawk which I rode for over 15 years. What the CB1100 lacks in horsepower (if you can call 88 horsepower lacking) it makes up in torque which is everywhere in the rev range. I've found the fuel injection on the CB to be spot on in comparison to my Goldwing which can be downright scary sometimes before its completely warmed up and stumbles through a corner.
    I may be wrong but I believe the 2017 CB1100EX will become a classic as it is already gone completely in Canada and I see NO 2018 or 2019 models in the U.S. either. My local dealer is already trying to pry mine out of my hands as another customer wants one desperately. I cannot understand why Honda would put so much money into developing this machine and then not bother promoting it. A brand new alternative to the now apparently discontinued CB1100EX is the new Kawasaki Z900RS. It lacks the chromed out look of the CB1100 and sports mag wheels instead of spokes, plus a 4 into 1 exhaust system, but it's performance is WAY beyond the Honda mainly due to being liquid cooled and about 60 pounds lighter. If memory serves, the z900rs is around 116 hp. Surprisingly though, the price of this new Kawi is pretty similar to the CB1100EX, that is to say expensive!

      Hi, I got them on Amazon actually and they've gotten cheaper since then. The only support I use for them is the rear suspension and they've worked well so far. I will say they pick up dirt and chain grease VERY easily, so it's sort of a pain. I just use them on longer trips, it was too grimy to use them daily.

    Thanks for this video. I recently traded my 2014 CB1100 for a 22 Triumph Speed Twin 1200. While I love the Triumph, I miss the CB. I did a lot of modifications to my 14 CB, and I heard you say if you plan on that, go with the 14. After riding it more, would you still say that? Cause I prefer the tank and seat of the 17. And the LCD screen looks clear, clean, and beautiful imo. Not sure if it’s better than the 14’s, but I love it. Let me know what you think. There are many more 14’s available on the aftermarket than 17’s. But I’d pay the extra money for a better bike. Do I wish it was 15lbs less? Yes. But oh well. Thanks!

      Hey Max, I'd love to do a video about the Pipemasters soon, I'm trying to get a friend with a mic to help out and do a proper video, not just a garage/cell-phone thing like so many people do. They're definitely louder than stock but I can say without a doubt I love them. They're so pricey, but they look sweet and sound great (in my opinion), so I'm very glad the previous owner stuck them on. They make me accelerate a lot harder than I used to as well, which I've found results in a lot more wear and tear on the rear tire! Oh well :)

      @iamheero  5 років тому

      Hi Lee, Honestly I'm not sure there's a massive difference. The slipper clutch does smooth out downshifts if you don't rev-match properly and you can sense some delay while it's adjusting, nothing major. The lighter clutch pull is likewise nothing major- the previous 2014 CBs are already light hydraulic clutch pulls.

    • @iamheero
      @iamheero  5 років тому +1

      @@keeponkeepinon18 I wouldn't worry about that, since the bike's fuel injected it should be able to basically auto-choke in the cold. I've never had issues on my old CB even when I was living in New England with it, where it was below freezing half the year (although I didn't ride it much during the winter). @iamheero  5 років тому

      Hi Norris! I think it would be a great bike. Easy is probably the best word to describe it. Some people are looking for more, but a returning rider not necessarily looking for the 'character' of an Italian bike will probably be very happy. Whatever you end up with, ride safe!

      It depends on what you rode before. I am another boomerang rider having returned after 30 years. I started riding in the dirt and moved up to a CB550F. The CB1100 feels EXACTLY like my old CB550 save for 100 lbs, more power, much better brakes, and better suspension. It is an uncanny time machine for those accustomed to old Honda fours which is just what the engineers intended. It was easy as pie making the transition to the new bike. The new 21st centuruy riding conditions and people took a bit longer.

    Hey! Great video and beautiful bike! I've been looking at the 2014 CB1100s and wondering what some of the differences between the older models and the 2017s from a rider's point of view (not just specs). So thank you, this video really helped. My question is, I found a 2014 with 20k miles, listed at a pretty good price. I'm wary of the mileage, but I heard you say that yours had 44k. Any thoughts?
    btw... I wish I saw a little more love for these bikes from women (I'm a woman). Comment if you're out there! I'm planning on getting one of these very soon. I previously had a Nighthawk 750, so I'm kind of used to that kind of weight already. I don't know if you've had experience with both, but if you have, do you have any real life comparisons in weight distribution? Thanks!

    • @iamheero
      @iamheero  5 років тому

      Hey Taj, I have ridden a 90s something nighthawk but don't have enough experience to really compare. The CB feels more modern but I think a lot of that could be more related to fit and finish. As far as the '14 with 20k on it, I don't think that's many miles at all for that sort of bike. If the previous owner did the maintenance, you're probably good on just basic maintenance for a long time. Some forum members have had to do some basic work like a fuel pump around 75k but people have well over 100,000 miles with no repairs needed also, so your mileage may vary. I will say I got my '14 BRAND NEW for $7500 so I'd try to negotiate a little- I think that's pricey. I've seen a '14 with 8000 miles for $4000 bucks. Obviously that was cheap, but they really don't hold a lot of value for some reason- nobody knows about them, maybe? Very atypical for Honda, but it means you can get a ton of bike for the money, so it's a pro/con game I think. Good luck/ride safe!

I have not test rode a new Honda CB1100EX yet so my question is how does it handle on curvy roads compared to the T-120 ? I did like the T-120 in all other respects but could not deal with its bad, IMO, handling (for lack of a better descripion) on curvy roads.

      I was just commenting on other videos that I actually tested both before I purchased my CB1100Rs, also did the XSR900 and the Z900Rs.
      Long story short: I wanted to love (and get) the Triumph before I sat on any of these machines. The T120 came out last on my ranking of the four mainly for the very same reason you mentioned (I did ride a Street Twin too and I loved that btw). Brutal heavy front steering, also I was expecting a lots of "character" Ive read about on reviews, but I found the engine a bit blank. The CB however was an instant love, everything felt right and the engine is silk smooth but also you feel it in your hands too.. It is a lot heavier than the Triumph to toss on feet around, but as soon as you take off the weight dissapears, it is a lot easier to ride imo. Very flickable for its size and weight. For me definitely handles better then the T120.

      Hi, I think it's totally up to you. I'll probably be doing more than 4k per oil change, but less than 8k personally, I usually spend less than $30 per change including filters, so what's the harm in going more? I would also say unless you notice something sounding wrong (youtube probably has lots of examples of bad valve noises) you're probably fine. On my old CB I didn't check until 18k or something like that and it was fine, well within spec, but your riding style may be more aggressive than mine and may warrant more frequent inspection. I was probably going to have them done again when I had my tires changed over closer to ~40,000 miles just to be safe, but I didn't see any performance reason to do so, just paranoia. Enjoy it! That CB will last you as long as you'll want it :)

      @@iamheero thanks for the response, I will stick to the 14 recommendations on the oil change. Every 8k seams a bit long to me. As for the value information, thanks i believe i will follow your experience. I don't ride this bike like a sport bike... it's not what it was intended to be. So i will keep a close listen/attention and ride on... I don't see ever getting rid of the bike.

    I am thinking of buying one. I ride old bikes, and I want something that looks old but has modern benefits, reliability, good brakes, etc. My concern is the weight. I'm 61 and fit for my age, but my parking arrangements are such that I have to go up a ramp into my garage. No issues going in, it's coming out that concerns me. I have an original 1971 CB 750 K2 and get that in and out with no issues. Can you tell me anything about man-handling the bike around as its probably nearly another 100lbs heavier than my 750? I'm probably going to get one anyway but as your experience is substantial with this particular model, I just wondered if you had any advice. Thanks and stay safe.

    • @markthomas7957

      I just bought a 2014 CB1100, and have not even taken delivery (tomorrow), but the specs say it weighs about 530# wet, not "540# wet," as claimed in this video. This is just a bit more than the 2002 Suzuki GSF 1200S on which I've put the last 52K miles. Compared with any other bike of similar power, this is light, though not quite as light as a superbike with an aluminum mainframe. Handling my Bandit on a slight slope was never a problem, and it sounds like you're more concerned about baking down a ramp than going up, which should not be problematic as long as you have good footing.

      I ride Honda VT500c and Honda VLX, in addition to my 2013 CB1100. The bike is noticeably heavier than either of those, especially the VT500c. I weigh 180 and I am fairly short (5'5"), so the bike is three times my weight. It is a trick to push it around my gravel driveway and takes noticeable effort to push it up a ramp. In fact, I usually wind up really having to think about how I do it, and it can be a pain, especially because the weight makes it dig into the stone in the driveway, making turning it (while walking next to it) taxing. On the good side, the weight is wonderful on the highway and basically at any speed. It is far more stable on the road than the other two bikes. If you are in fairly good health you can get away with it. I have never dropped it on the road, but have several times in my back yard (which is on a steep hill). I will say, once it starts going over, it takes much effort to stop it. Anymore than 15 or 20 degrees tilt, I would say you probably can't prevent it from falling. I would recommend aftermarket engine bars and sliders to attach to the forks and rear.

    did you do your own valve clearance checks? have you ever found it out of spec with your old bike?

    • @iamheero
      @iamheero  5 років тому +1

      Hi, I had a shop check my valves because I don't have a space to disassemble the bike, they did the first valve check around 18,000 miles if I recall correctly and it was still in spec. I was going to have them check again around 40,000 miles just to be safe, there was no indication they were out of spec. It's unfortunately an expensive thing to have done, not difficult but time consuming, so I didn't want to follow service intervals in the manual given that you can usually get some indication that they're getting out of spec, as opposed to fluids just losing their properties over time.

    Is the sound of 2014 exhaust pipe different from 2017?

    • @iamheero
      @iamheero  5 років тому

      I'm not sure that there's much difference if any between a 14 DLX and a 17 EX model since they both use a 4->2 system that looks pretty similar. There are some minor airflow changes that may make a very slight difference. I think the 2014 single exhaust on the base model would sound a little different from both, but quantifying exactly how is probably not so easy. I think the stock exhausts are pretty plain, very quiet, not tinny or anything but I prefer a more sonorous tone, so I always go aftermarket regardless.

    I dislike that they have de-tuned these motors so much over the years on the CB1100 series Bikes..The 82 to 84 model CB1100F made 109BHP. They were 20 pounds lighter and had a 5.3 gal fuel tank.. The CB1100s past 2000 are down about 20 HP and they weight more with a smaller tank..No matter what I love the platform!!!

    Yours is the first Ive heard say that this is good for new riders. Ive just recently started to become massively interested with this motorcycle and I never considered it due to my lack of motorcycle experience. I took the MSF about 15 years ago, lost my certification due to my license expiring after moving to the east coast. Became a local Vespa and Piaggio salesman becoming the in-house instructor for new riders and rode all manner of scooter sizes up to 500cc with the occasional motorcycle ride for 3 years.
    Ive been asking every Vlogger on youtube that Ive come across that has reviewed this bike if this would be good for a mature 30 something male with no intent on hot rodding, showboating etc, as a first bike? I want something I can grow into and I don't have the income that will allow me to just get a 'beginner' bike and after a year or two get a bigger bike. I also want something substantial enough that I could take the gf on day trips and maybe something longer albeit lazy. I really wanted a Moto Guzzi V7 but I just dont thing it will haul me and my gf other than around town. I was also looking at something like the new Tracer 700 but unfortunately the lady doesn't like the look and prefers the more classic looks. The Honda has been visually approved lol.
    Would love to know what you think? I would have taken it for a test ride already but gettin a license certification for motorcycles is expensive here in Germany. Otherwise I would have taken it for a spin already. It certainly feels comfortable when sitting on it.

      Hi shmac, I think this bike would be perfect for your use case. Not many people seem to feel the need to mod these bikes as they came very nice from the factory. This is a really easy to ride bike and I have had several passengers along for the ride and they've all said it's very comfortable for them as well. It's great for around-town and longer trips, the longest I've done with a passenger was about 3 hours each way (stopping for gas and food of course), and we had no issues at all. I love the V7 as well and a close friend of mine has one, but it is definitely a smaller bike and I'm not sure how it'd do 2-up. It's a very different bike, and not nearly as Honda-refined. Lighter, maybe a better city-bike, but if you plan on much highway riding I think you'll really appreciate the bigger bike. The CB is smoother and heavier and more of a relaxed (albeit very capable) cruiser. For a new rider, the power comes on in a very forgiving way and I don't think the weight of it will be an issue at all.

      @@iamheero Thank you so much for your response! I really appreciate it! Yours especially due to the nature of your videos and your down to earth and pleasant presentations with your experiences on this bike.
      I'm not worried about the weight as I'm a sturdy fellow but my downfall aside from lack of real world riding on a motorcycle is my inseam 30". There are alot of bikes that have turned me off because of my insecurity with handling bikes that I didn't feel comfortable not being able to touch the ground securely enough with both feet. Scrambler XC being one.
      I wish the V7 was a much more substantial motorcycle like the Honda however and thus could handle a passenger on longer rides.
      That said I'm so happy you wrote back and the fact that you said the power comes on in a very forgiving way....all very reassuring and affirming in my own feelings about owning one. Thank you so much for your help! Safe riding!

      Sorry for not seeing this haha... But if you're (or anyone else is) wondering still, it's the Luimoto cover and added no height really, just a neat design. Slightly smoother/slippier than the original seat which is a little grippy, but you're not falling off or anything. I think there's an optional gel pad you can buy, but I had them just exchange the seat cover. They actually didn't have any for the CB11 at the time so I sent them a whole seat and they made the templates from my seat!
