I think that is the right move. This is no tourer but it is a delight to own and ride on a sunny day. I even loaded it up once and went camping in winter and it coped well but not its forte.
I bought a low mileage ‘68 plate EX in yellow a couple of months ago, my previous bike was a CB1100 ‘14 plate and I sold it about 8 years ago and regretted selling it; stopped riding at that point for a while. I am 65 now, and decided it was time to get back on a bike. This is a very accurate review, I agree with everything that Terence has said in his review. My favourite bikes after all these years were those of my youth in the 1970’s and owning and riding this brings it all back. I don’t want to go fast any longer, I do however want a leisurely, effortless ride and the EX delivers this so well. It feels solid and secure and is well built. I am 170cm tall, 70kg and have a 30” inch inseam. It fits me perfectly. It is a bit heavy when not actually riding, but is more manageable than many other bikes of similar weight that I had owned. Yellow is a bit marmite I know, but everyone who sees it in the flesh loves the colour and look of the bike. I have had quite a few yellow Hondas now, and there were of course plenty around in the 70’s. Same heated Oxford grips … nice touch is that a heated grip symbol lights up in the rev counter when they are switched on. I won’t be touring, or going out in the wet or the cold, or doing a commute (retired). My plan is to look at it a fair bit, tinker with it occasionally, and take it out for a spin round country roads in Spring, Summer and Autumn. I’m 60 years old ,had a t120 ,xe1200 ,Harley 72 ,gold wing 1800 ….an old one ,and currently have a mint 1998 zx9r with only 18 miles also a Suzuki 1981 Gs850g with only 30,000 miles . This bike brings back everything about the 70s/80s I’m looking at trading in my 2 bikes for the cb1100 ,it ticks all the boxes for me . Thanks Dave, appreciate the feedback. Out of your lot it would have to be the GS850G for me, always loved that bike and remember seeing them around when I was a 17 year old riding my X7. I was an apprentice and knew it would be out of my reach for many years, I never got there in the end. Enjoy the CB1100 if you pull the trigger.

A lot of my friends who don’t ride bikes always asks …why do you go through the faff and time putting on all your gear when you could just jump in the car ….. Good down to earth review. Got mine at full preload and it handles like a blade flat out. The faster you go the more it stiffens up. If you love torque as suited to British roads you will love it. Ive done the NC500 on mine no probs and other long trips across country. There is no back ache or tingles. Mines done 18,000 now and no noise from tappets. Check the tacho against the speed in top. 70mph at 3000rpm. Just above tickover on other bikes. Spot on with the servicing schedule. If you power wash and dry with air line its well finished. I like to get the autosol round mine.

I own a 2014 Standard CB 1100 and absolutely love the bike after nearly 40 Years of riding I found something that satisfies me. All you need to do is add a Dart Marlin fly screen and the wind protection is significantly improved. The bike is very relaxed but it will still do 11 second quarter mile.
The fly screen would be good at higher speeds I’m sure but I’ll be using this bike for country days out so at 50-60MPH max it won’t trouble me. I have two other faired bikes so going naked is a nice change for me. Although lower than many on power if you’re willing to use the revs it’ll move for you as you know.
I bought a black 2020 RS about 6 weeks ago....2 years old with only 7, yes SEVEN miles on the clock. The last owner, a wealthy 80 year old bought it new, not to ride but to look at, maybe as a lounge ornament. My last bike was a 2018 Kawasaki Z1000SX which I loved and with 143 bhp, went like stink. Fantastic for lightning fast overtakes. However, I find the Honda CB1100RS suits me, my age (nearly 70), riding style and roads I use more often. It's more of a relaxed, low revving cruiser. The seat is soft, roomy and comfortable, the suspension plush, brakes, steering and handling are every bit as good as the Kawasaki, mpg about the same, 50 mpg (imperial). The offbeat exhaust sound is music to my ears. Then there's the stunning good looks....I fell in love with the original CB 1100 when they were introduced, what I didn't like is the 4 into one exhaust or the square tank. The EX came out later with a dual exhaust but I didn't care for 18 inch spoked wire wheels with tubed tyres with little choice. The RS ticked all the right boxes, I saw one advertised locally, offered a good part exchange deal and the RS was delivered to the door the next day. After a few mods, namely a fly screen, luggage rack (a great aid when pushing the bike around), bar end mirrors, Beeline sat nav, leather grip wraps and go faster brake and clutch levers, she's a keeper.
Ah yes, you have the character of the bike described perfectly. I’m with you on the tubeless tyres, I got mine converted to tubeless fairly quickly, best thing I did. That off beat camshaft is wonderful yes. 👍 cheers and enjoy!

Yes, I've really liked the look of these for a long time and had a good think about what was out there, especially in the air-cooled category. I probably didn't intentionally go out to buy another big bore bike but once I saw this come up I knew I had to jump at it. Most don't have enough mileage on them to avoid import VAT so this was a rare find for this 2018 reg.
Gorgeous bike that's purpose is leisurely rides. It's a nimble bike and holds the sweepers line well. I have a 2013 and it's a very enjoyable bike and boy does it compliments on the way it looks. As far as speed it will still do about 3.3 seconds to 60 mph.
Yes, it's in great condition for its age. I do think it sat pre-registered in the dealer for a year so it's only done two years on the road. It won't replace the Tiger though, it's not that type of bike.

hi terry,bang on observation ,bought my RS on looks,surprised 112 mph limiter for the off road blasts not impressed with mine for fist few couple of thousand miles but now its under my skin weirdest thing i have ever owned, droped my forks through the yokes 20 mm and fitted a rear sprocket with an extra 2 teeth,now very flexable a mod woth doing and cheap ,nice review!
Cheers Chris. Yes, I don’t think your the first person to feel that way just based on my few months of observations. I’m glad you’ve gelled with it now as it does offer something different (as you know). Sounds like some sensible mods you have made.
It's a fine video, and a fine motorbike. I considered this bike a couple of years ago. I compared the specs to the '92-'03 Honda CB750 Nighthawk. At 5'4" and 185 lb I found that other than cosmetics, size and weight, they were very similar in function and real world street performance. If you're about 5'10" or less, want to spend 1/3 as much, and want a 50 lb lighter UJM, consider the old Nighthawk 750cc.

My keeper NH750, an '03, has less than 10k miles, a Rifle fairing, GIVI bags and trunk. Geared taller to run 3,950 RPM at an indicated 65 MPH (~60 GPS). I'm selling my '96 NH750 with 4 into 1, geared lower as a fun bike, and keeping the Hornet 919 as a funner bike. I had the Bandit 1200S, and have a 1rst Gen FZ1 so I, too enjoy faster bikes, but the "Touring" Nighthawk 750 stays. Ride safe my friend.

Great review. Love look of cb1100 with its high quality parts and attention to detail. Only thing stopped me buying one is that I already own a beautiful cb1300s which isn't quite as retro but does have a more powerful engine with lots of torque. I picked up a beautiful VFR1200F with 4000 miles on for thrills and long distance touring. That's a great bike, harder to ride and power is amazing but will keep CB1300 as long as I can still ride.
The CB1300 is a beautiful looking classic four pot from Honda which unfortunately hasn’t been available for sale for quite some time in these parts. I especially like the current Bol D’or editions. Classy motor indeed.
@@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff One thing ..the CB1300 does not have chrome sleeves on the downpipes...as didn't the first edition of the CB1100. I spend hours cleaning especially if riding in wet weather! Set off with sparkly pipes and come back with awful brown ones and dirt is burned on the stainless steel pipes.. Mention as comments below state the cb1100 not suitable for bad weather riding. My 1300 only goes out on dry days :)
@@nigel274 oh dear, I’m not a great one for cleaning pipes I have to say. I don’t mind the wet but I’ll try and preserve the CB for nicer days to. The Triumph can do the wet work, no chrome!
This is one of the nicest bikes I have ever ridden, I sold mine as it cold not cope with bad weather. I am looking to pick up an RS version for the summer now
Lovely, enjoy the RS. I do have a Triumph Tiger for longer journeys and bad weather so I have that covered. Although I haven't had thing long I try and take it out at every opportunity.
@@denisg4288 hi Denis, it’s not the cold as such it’s our uk 🇬🇧 weather. The wheels nipples on the spokes aren’t stainless steel so rust. Take a look under the mud guards and you will find very thin paint that flakes off and again rust sets in. The paint under the engine also flakes off. All of the aluminium lacquered parts tend to fuzz up too...need I go on😂the RS has mag wheels and a black engine. Easier to live with and touch up
It is a looker alright, it just seems to have a weak demand in the USA. The whole model range was dropped in the US at some stage (not sure of the exact year) and then reintroduced in 2017. They will be disappearing here too with the newer Euro 5 regulations, great shame, glad I have mine.
@@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff I was disheartened that the bike wass not available in the US; I was told by the local Honda dealer that the bikes didn't sell and Honda had to discount the price to get rid of the stock in 2017. Consequently Honda stopped exporting them. American riders apparently have bad taste and they'd ride monster Harleys or bikes that look like mangled wrecks instead. I didn't give up though and did a search last week. I was astonished that there was a "used" 2013 CB 1100 for sale in San Diego with 20 miles on it! I called the dealer and made an offer: $9950 out the door! I drove down from LA yesterday, checked it out, made payment and he'll ship it to me tomorrow shipping included in the price. The bike looks brand new indeed and comes with a nice wind shield, a $500 bonus. He removed the shield from the picture, because American riders think that it's for "sissies"! I feel extremely lucky that i got a traditional, "retro" bike that satisfies my nostalgia and taste. Youcanfoolmeonce, I I am very surprised that so many do not realize this bike is available in the US. In fact only the E X model is available in the US for 2020 and also 2021. It was not available in 2018.
You’ll be fairly unique if you get one. Avoid if you have long legs though. Seat height is quite low so seat to peg distance is short enough. (Not Fireblade short though). Cheers 🍻
That is because I don't find mine silky smooth and I sometimes have difficulty selecting a gear. It is reasonably light but not silky. Selecting first is greeted with a fair clunk too. This could be down to oil selection but I am using a recommended 10W-30 semi syth from Motul. Maybe I should try the Honda GN4 next oil change?
@@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff I don't know what oil is in my engine, it would make a diffence but not sure how much.Alan Millyard promotes zx1 oil to reduce friction but I've never used it The clutch maybe sticking. My bike has only 3000 miles and the gear change is one of the best I've ever used, Honda gear changes I have previously always found clunky.
@@500monkeyboom9 I’ll see what happens on the next change. I am not overly worried about it and it is still a good gearbox. I’m not sure about the likes of ZX1 in a wet clutch motorcycle, that seems counter intuitive. My smoothest gearbox was a 1976 Suzuki T500. 🏍
I used re-black my engine block with stove black enamel , my Kawasaki z1000st was out side all year round as I did not have a garage , but if you protect a bike no problem mine looked brand new when I sold it.
I've a 2020 RS and you pretty much nail it with your comments. One thing you do get with the RS is the better (adjustable) suspension and slightly better brakes. I find the bike superb in the bends and the brakes are top-notch.
I meant to mention that the RS had adjustable suspension when I was talking about that in the village to give Honda the benefit of that and the tubeless tyres, thanks for bringing that up. As for the brakes that hadn’t crossed my mind that they were upgraded on the RS so great point. Cheers Ian! Do you plan on keeping the RS longer term?

The last version of the CB750 had hydraulic lifters. It also had 77 hp and was noticeably lighter than the 1100. Honda should have kept that engine as it was and simply added fuel injection. I had a 2002 CB750 and deeply regret selling it. That bike had more power than any sane person could ever use on public roads. It also had great footpeg and exhaust clearance (4 into 2). I routinely got 42-46 mpg and that was riding it fairly spirited. EFI would likely have pushed it to well above 50 mpg. I think it was a mistake to increase the displacement to beyond 750cc and remove the hydraulic lifters. (US gallons used for mpg figures above, not UK gallons)
I would of greatly welcomed hydraulic lifters seeing as they went to all the trouble of designing a new engine from scratch. No doubt cost was the key factor. With regards to the displacement, I feel this engine size was probably driven by the known future euro emission regulations and the tough task of meeting those with an air-cooled inline four. I like the 89HP but it is not a lot for that displacement and weight I will grant. It does promote relaxed riding I will say. Just look at the reasonably low power output from the RE650’s who face the same issues. Thanks for leaving your thoughts 👍.
Great review thanks, I love the look of this bike but at 6'2" with 32" inseam I think it would be a little cramped. Unfortunately none of the Honda dealers I've tried have a bike available for a test ride so I'll never know for sure
I think you would find it cramped for longer rides with a 32” seam. These won’t be around for sale much longer due to Euro 5 regs so once dealers have sold their stock of them I would say they would be reluctant to get more in stock for demo rides.

I am surprised there isnt' adjustable damping, especially when you think that the mid-80s version of this (e.g. CB 900-F) Had both adjustable damping at the rear, and anti-dive front forks. And somewhat more power.
It surprised me at the cost of the bike at full retail. The forks do manage rough roads quite well but it would of been nice to be able to get it exactly as you would of wanted it.
You say it doesn’t give you a kick in the pants when you overtake but is that because your so used to 140bhp . The Kawasaki z1000st I had was only about 97bhp but to me and all my motorcycle friends it was one of the fastest bikes of its time , the shaft drive made it quicker than the chain version. It had two faults a we’ve on fast bends which I cured by putting a heavyweight oil in the forks . And you could not use much back break in the wet as with the shaft drive that was all the back breaking you needed . It was a very comfortable bike even on long distances as long as you had really good rain gear. Yes you did have to think a bit before a bend but for such a big bike it could handle the twisty stuff , but yes I did use opposite lock but we had really good skills in them days. I’m sounding like I’m a 100 year’s old. But I spent 11 years on big bikes and loved it.
It is just because the delivery is turbine smooth. There is no peak or hefty mid-range to draw on, it is linear all the way through the rev range. I'm not knocking it though. I really enjoy this bike. I know what you mean about horsepower though, I did many a mile on my 1976 Suzuki T500 and I never felt it was underpowered then.
@@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff Hi Terry. Weather is crap so just enjoying re-watching a few vlogs on the settee. I have the RS. It’s still got 90bhp give or take so it’s plenty quick enough to have fun. If I wanted more performance I would have bought something else. These CB’s are walking a different path, authentic simple air cooled bikes that look terrific and you get pleasure from riding under 65mph 99% of the time. I’ve had mega bhp monsters too and they are great, but I’ve done that.
Thanks for the review. Seriously considering getting one of these in the next few months. LOVE the looks, and the fuelling, clutch, gearbox, comfort - all of that sounds ideal. As for power, who needs it? The bikes easily fast enough! One question: Is the tank the same shape as the earlier (2014 etc) ones? I noticed that they changed the petrol cap but was wondering whether anything else about the tank changed. Thanks again.
It was a whole new tank design on the 2017's, quite a different shape, slightly larger and with a seamless base. The earlier bikes had a much more classic fuel cap which I will admit looks classy compared to my more modern cap. See if you can test before you buy. The seat to peg relationship is a little tight on this bike, don't buy if you have long legs. Good Luck!

I read an article somewhere were they got four or so Honda CB1100 from various years and measured their power on the dyno. They all were about 84-87bhp…..at the rear wheel! Honda is not telling the truth here…that’s about 105BHP at the crank.
Because the bike is so heavy you might notice it though. I think Honda have traded off top end horsepower for usable mid range torque and it has worked on this engine. You can push this bike quite hard on a country road, the engine isn't the limiting factor though. Still have it, great bike. Cheers for the info.
Finding an EX took forever, bought one of the 2 for sale nationwide here in America. If I came into the dealership one hour later (on Black Friday nonetheless!) I would not have it as someone came in with cash in hand!

There are plenty of good 2010 and 2011 models in really good shape, but I want the 6 speed gear box. All 5 speed bikes I ride I am always looking for an extra gear, like my 2012 Triumph Bonneville T100. Anyways happy and safe riding mate.

I never got this measuring system, is there also pebbles involved, to split partials off , say 17 stone and 5 pebbles? Or is this just the real secret reason behind Brexit; mainland stones having a different specific weight. Nevermind, I am just always puzzled when some-one says they weigh somany stone.

Good on you and thanks for your comment. I don’t think white was never imported into the UK for the 2017 and on model year and the EX was never imported into Ireland where I am. No longer for sale new in Europe (once the leftovers are sold) due to Euro 5 regulations. Don’t leave it too long! 👍

I own a 2014 Standard CB 1100 and absolutely love the bike after nearly 40 Years of riding I found something that satisfies me. All you need to do is add a Dart Marlin fly screen and the wind protection is significantly improved. The bike is very relaxed but it will still do 11 second quarter mile.
The fly screen would be good at higher speeds I’m sure but I’ll be using this bike for country days out so at 50-60MPH max it won’t trouble me. I have two other faired bikes so going naked is a nice change for me. Although lower than many on power if you’re willing to use the revs it’ll move for you as you know.
I bought a black 2020 RS about 6 weeks ago....2 years old with only 7, yes SEVEN miles on the clock. The last owner, a wealthy 80 year old bought it new, not to ride but to look at, maybe as a lounge ornament. My last bike was a 2018 Kawasaki Z1000SX which I loved and with 143 bhp, went like stink. Fantastic for lightning fast overtakes. However, I find the Honda CB1100RS suits me, my age (nearly 70), riding style and roads I use more often. It's more of a relaxed, low revving cruiser. The seat is soft, roomy and comfortable, the suspension plush, brakes, steering and handling are every bit as good as the Kawasaki, mpg about the same, 50 mpg (imperial). The offbeat exhaust sound is music to my ears.
Then there's the stunning good looks....I fell in love with the original CB 1100 when they were introduced, what I didn't like is the 4 into one exhaust or the square tank. The EX came out later with a dual exhaust but I didn't care for 18 inch spoked wire wheels with tubed tyres with little choice. The RS ticked all the right boxes, I saw one advertised locally, offered a good part exchange deal and the RS was delivered to the door the next day. After a few mods, namely a fly screen, luggage rack (a great aid when pushing the bike around), bar end mirrors, Beeline sat nav, leather grip wraps and go faster brake and clutch levers, she's a keeper.
Ah yes, you have the character of the bike described perfectly. I’m with you on the tubeless tyres, I got mine converted to tubeless fairly quickly, best thing I did. That off beat camshaft is wonderful yes. 👍 cheers and enjoy!

Yes, I've really liked the look of these for a long time and had a good think about what was out there, especially in the air-cooled category. I probably didn't intentionally go out to buy another big bore bike but once I saw this come up I knew I had to jump at it. Most don't have enough mileage on them to avoid import VAT so this was a rare find for this 2018 reg.
That is a nice bike!! I owned a 2007 Honda VTX 1300r for 10 years and never had an issue, no complaints at all.

Gorgeous bike that's purpose is leisurely rides. It's a nimble bike and holds the sweepers line well. I have a 2013 and it's a very enjoyable bike and boy does it compliments on the way it looks. As far as speed it will still do about 3.3 seconds to 60 mph.
Leisurely rides is right. This bike calms me right down on the road. It’s my therapy bike 😀.

Yes, it's in great condition for its age. I do think it sat pre-registered in the dealer for a year so it's only done two years on the road. It won't replace the Tiger though, it's not that type of bike.

hi terry,bang on observation ,bought my RS on looks,surprised 112 mph limiter for the off road blasts not impressed with mine for fist few couple of thousand miles but now its under my skin weirdest thing i have ever owned, droped my forks through the yokes 20 mm and fitted a rear sprocket with an extra 2 teeth,now very flexable a mod woth doing and cheap ,nice review!

It's a fine video, and a fine motorbike. I considered this bike a couple of years ago. I compared the specs to the '92-'03 Honda CB750 Nighthawk. At 5'4" and 185 lb I found that other than cosmetics, size and weight, they were very similar in function and real world street performance. If you're about 5'10" or less, want to spend 1/3 as much, and want a 50 lb lighter UJM, consider the old Nighthawk 750cc.

My keeper NH750, an '03, has less than 10k miles, a Rifle fairing, GIVI bags and trunk. Geared taller to run 3,950 RPM at an indicated 65 MPH (~60 GPS). I'm selling my '96 NH750 with 4 into 1, geared lower as a fun bike, and keeping the Hornet 919 as a funner bike. I had the Bandit 1200S, and have a 1rst Gen FZ1 so I, too enjoy faster bikes, but the "Touring" Nighthawk 750 stays. Ride safe my friend.

Great review. Love look of cb1100 with its high quality parts and attention to detail. Only thing stopped me buying one is that I already own a beautiful cb1300s which isn't quite as retro but does have a more powerful engine with lots of torque. I picked up a beautiful VFR1200F with 4000 miles on for thrills and long distance touring. That's a great bike, harder to ride and power is amazing but will keep CB1300 as long as I can still ride.
The CB1300 is a beautiful looking classic four pot from Honda which unfortunately hasn’t been available for sale for quite some time in these parts. I especially like the current Bol D’or editions. Classy motor indeed.
@@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff One thing ..the CB1300 does not have chrome sleeves on the downpipes...as didn't the first edition of the CB1100. I spend hours cleaning especially if riding in wet weather! Set off with sparkly pipes and come back with awful brown ones and dirt is burned on the stainless steel pipes.. Mention as comments below state the cb1100 not suitable for bad weather riding. My 1300 only goes out on dry days :)
@@nigel274 oh dear, I’m not a great one for cleaning pipes I have to say. I don’t mind the wet but I’ll try and preserve the CB for nicer days to. The Triumph can do the wet work, no chrome!
This is one of the nicest bikes I have ever ridden, I sold mine as it cold not cope with bad weather. I am looking to pick up an RS version for the summer now
Lovely, enjoy the RS. I do have a Triumph Tiger for longer journeys and bad weather so I have that covered. Although I haven't had thing long I try and take it out at every opportunity.

@@denisg4288 hi Denis, it’s not the cold as such it’s our uk 🇬🇧 weather. The wheels nipples on the spokes aren’t stainless steel so rust. Take a look under the mud guards and you will find very thin paint that flakes off and again rust sets in. The paint under the engine also flakes off. All of the aluminium lacquered parts tend to fuzz up too...need I go on😂the RS has mag wheels and a black engine. Easier to live with and touch up

The CB1100EX @ 29:18 is the most beautiful bike of all times! Wonder why it's not available in the US.
It is a looker alright, it just seems to have a weak demand in the USA. The whole model range was dropped in the US at some stage (not sure of the exact year) and then reintroduced in 2017. They will be disappearing here too with the newer Euro 5 regulations, great shame, glad I have mine.
@@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff I was disheartened that the bike wass not available in the US; I was told by the local Honda dealer that the bikes didn't sell and Honda had to discount the price to get rid of the stock in 2017. Consequently Honda stopped exporting them. American riders apparently have bad taste and they'd ride monster Harleys or bikes that look like mangled wrecks instead. I didn't give up though and did a search last week. I was astonished that there was a "used" 2013 CB 1100 for sale in San Diego with 20 miles on it! I called the dealer and made an offer: $9950 out the door! I drove down from LA yesterday, checked it out, made payment and he'll ship it to me tomorrow shipping included in the price. The bike looks brand new indeed and comes with a nice wind shield, a $500 bonus. He removed the shield from the picture, because American riders think that it's for "sissies"!
I feel extremely lucky that i got a traditional, "retro" bike that satisfies my nostalgia and taste. Maybe a bit pricey for an "old" bike but it's worth every penny for me and I'll die happy!

Youcanfoolmeonce, I I am very surprised that so many do not realize this bike is available in the US. In fact only the E X model is available in the US for 2020 and also 2021. It was not available in 2018.

You’ll be fairly unique if you get one. Avoid if you have long legs though. Seat height is quite low so seat to peg distance is short enough. (Not Fireblade short though). Cheers 🍻

Just bought the rs version, agree with you about the character of the bike, easy going. You didn't mention the gearbox which is also sillky smooth.
That is because I don't find mine silky smooth and I sometimes have difficulty selecting a gear. It is reasonably light but not silky. Selecting first is greeted with a fair clunk too. This could be down to oil selection but I am using a recommended 10W-30 semi syth from Motul. Maybe I should try the Honda GN4 next oil change?
@@terenceokeeffesmotorcyclestuff I don't know what oil is in my engine, it would make a diffence but not sure how much.Alan Millyard promotes zx1 oil to reduce friction but I've never used it The clutch maybe sticking. My bike has only 3000 miles and the gear change is one of the best I've ever used, Honda gear changes I have previously always found clunky.
@@500monkeyboom9 I’ll see what happens on the next change. I am not overly worried about it and it is still a good gearbox. I’m not sure about the likes of ZX1 in a wet clutch motorcycle, that seems counter intuitive. My smoothest gearbox was a 1976 Suzuki T500. 🏍
I used re-black my engine block with stove black enamel , my Kawasaki z1000st was out side all year round as I did not have a garage , but if you protect a bike no problem mine looked brand new when I sold it.

I've a 2020 RS and you pretty much nail it with your comments. One thing you do get with the RS is the better (adjustable) suspension and slightly better brakes. I find the bike superb in the bends and the brakes are top-notch.
I meant to mention that the RS had adjustable suspension when I was talking about that in the village to give Honda the benefit of that and the tubeless tyres, thanks for bringing that up. As for the brakes that hadn’t crossed my mind that they were upgraded on the RS so great point. Cheers Ian! Do you plan on keeping the RS longer term?

The last version of the CB750 had hydraulic lifters. It also had 77 hp and was noticeably lighter than the 1100. Honda should have kept that engine as it was and simply added fuel injection. I had a 2002 CB750 and deeply regret selling it. That bike had more power than any sane person could ever use on public roads. It also had great footpeg and exhaust clearance (4 into 2). I routinely got 42-46 mpg and that was riding it fairly spirited. EFI would likely have pushed it to well above 50 mpg. I think it was a mistake to increase the displacement to beyond 750cc and remove the hydraulic lifters. (US gallons used for mpg figures above, not UK gallons)
I would of greatly welcomed hydraulic lifters seeing as they went to all the trouble of designing a new engine from scratch. No doubt cost was the key factor. With regards to the displacement, I feel this engine size was probably driven by the known future euro emission regulations and the tough task of meeting those with an air-cooled inline four. I like the 89HP but it is not a lot for that displacement and weight I will grant. It does promote relaxed riding I will say. Just look at the reasonably low power output from the RE650’s who face the same issues. Thanks for leaving your thoughts 👍.
Definitely on my wish list if lockdown ends. At 12 stone, I'd like to think I wouldn't need to adjust the preload from the stock setup.
Maybe one notch on the rear for you, worth experimenting for the effort.
Great review thanks, I love the look of this bike but at 6'2" with 32" inseam I think it would be a little cramped. Unfortunately none of the Honda dealers I've tried have a bike available for a test ride so I'll never know for sure
I think you would find it cramped for longer rides with a 32” seam. These won’t be around for sale much longer due to Euro 5 regs so once dealers have sold their stock of them I would say they would be reluctant to get more in stock for demo rides.

I am surprised there isnt' adjustable damping, especially when you think that the mid-80s version of this (e.g. CB 900-F) Had both adjustable damping at the rear, and anti-dive front forks. And somewhat more power.
It surprised me at the cost of the bike at full retail. The forks do manage rough roads quite well but it would of been nice to be able to get it exactly as you would of wanted it.

You say it doesn’t give you a kick in the pants when you overtake but is that because your so used to 140bhp . The Kawasaki z1000st I had was only about 97bhp but to me and all my motorcycle friends it was one of the fastest bikes of its time , the shaft drive made it quicker than the chain version. It had two faults a we’ve on fast bends which I cured by putting a heavyweight oil in the forks . And you could not use much back break in the wet as with the shaft drive that was all the back breaking you needed . It was a very comfortable bike even on long distances as long as you had really good rain gear. Yes you did have to think a bit before a bend but for such a big bike it could handle the twisty stuff , but yes I did use opposite lock but we had really good skills in them days. I’m sounding like I’m a 100 year’s old. But I spent 11 years on big bikes and loved it.
It is just because the delivery is turbine smooth. There is no peak or hefty mid-range to draw on, it is linear all the way through the rev range. I'm not knocking it though. I really enjoy this bike. I know what you mean about horsepower though, I did many a mile on my 1976 Suzuki T500 and I never felt it was underpowered then.

It’s still got 90bhp give or take so it’s plenty quick enough to have fun. If I wanted more performance I would have bought something else. These CB’s are walking a different path, authentic simple air cooled bikes that look terrific and you get pleasure from riding under 65mph 99% of the time. I’ve had mega bhp monsters too and they are great, but I’ve done that.

Thanks for the review. Seriously considering getting one of these in the next few months. LOVE the looks, and the fuelling, clutch, gearbox, comfort - all of that sounds ideal. As for power, who needs it? The bikes easily fast enough! One question: Is the tank the same shape as the earlier (2014 etc) ones? I noticed that they changed the petrol cap but was wondering whether anything else about the tank changed. Thanks again.
It was a whole new tank design on the 2017's, quite a different shape, slightly larger and with a seamless base. The earlier bikes had a much more classic fuel cap which I will admit looks classy compared to my more modern cap. See if you can test before you buy. The seat to peg relationship is a little tight on this bike, don't buy if you have long legs. Good Luck!

I read an article somewhere were they got four or so Honda CB1100 from various years and measured their power on the dyno. They all were about 84-87bhp…..at the rear wheel! Honda is not telling the truth here…that’s about 105BHP at the crank.
Because the bike is so heavy you might notice it though. I think Honda have traded off top end horsepower for usable mid range torque and it has worked on this engine. You can push this bike quite hard on a country road, the engine isn't the limiting factor though. Still have it, great bike. Cheers for the info.

There are plenty of good 2010 and 2011 models in really good shape, but I want the 6 speed gear box. All 5 speed bikes I ride I am always looking for an extra gear, like my 2012 Triumph Bonneville T100. Anyways happy and safe riding mate.

I never got this measuring system, is there also pebbles involved, to split partials off , say 17 stone and 5 pebbles? Or is this just the real secret reason behind Brexit; mainland stones having a different specific weight. Nevermind, I am just always puzzled when some-one says they weigh somany stone.

Good on you and thanks for your comment. I don’t think white was never imported into the UK for the 2017 and on model year and the EX was never imported into Ireland where I am. No longer for sale new in Europe (once the leftovers are sold) due to Euro 5 regulations. Don’t leave it too long! 👍
