Take away point… Instagram hasn’t got a clue on how to move forward, so instead of supporting and utilising the talent that has helped build the platform in the first place, they’ll flounder around with idea after idea chasing other platforms and trends in the hope that something may succeed.
I’m with you! I read an article where a former employee mentioned how influencers are considered a dirty word internally and the company is absolutely trying to shut them out. Profit will always be their master.
Definitely feeling less connected to IG these days and looking for ways to add value and connect with folks off social media. 2022 is gonna be a fascinating year indeed!

I personally have zero interest in spending so much time crafting a reel to have it then crash and get buried. They’re losing me… my video will be on YT and screens … re: NFTs they can add a link or allow to share in shop or a grid link

I hate social media with a passion, I am a wedding photographer and social media is almost a second job, so many changes, it’s very hard to keep up with them. I post to Instagram and Facebook.
It’s such a slap in the face from a company that grew on photographers and creatives work and for them to pretty much kick us to the kerb!

As a photographer bringing teens to the platform does nothing for us. If Instagram wants teens start a new platform. If I want to watch videos I go to UA-cam.

in a few words, if we want to grow on instagram, we have to run the mouse wheel on how the platform wants us to go (tiktok). Definitely that's not how I want to guide what I create as a photographer. Cheers Jonny!

Definitely, a personal website is something you can really be proud of.
if video was important to Instagram, the video would be horizontal/landscape mode. People have eyes next to the other, not one above the other. It took ages for the TV format to come to widescreen. Vertical video sucks,
Instagram desperately trying to become tik tok 0.2 is the most suckiest thing that has happened. This app was elite for its original style and reasons. Focusing only on video is not going work well for small businesses who are constantly throwing money on ad promotions. Instagram makes sure there is 0 active on your business account if you don’t have an ongoing promotion. No matter how how amazing content you are sharing and using the right hashtag. Everything is BS without promotion.

Some people need to remember that teens don’t stay teens - the teens of today will want more mature platforms and content as the grow older (we were teens once!). Surely Tiktok and Instagram to be separate entities and provide different content - there will never be a platform that delivers everything of everyone. Maybe we need a new provider if a platform for photographers?

Well said. The value of a follow / follower gets downgraded the more Instagram decides on what people get to see. I mean, if they decide what you get to see, what's the point in following someone. Such a shame the 'social' part gets neglected so much.
I think they see TikTok as the greatest competitor (the following generation is mainly on TikTok, thats the death of the platform where the teens are not). And if we check how tiktok spreads the content a high following is not bad, but not the key. So I think, and instagram has done it before with the reels, the following is not anymore the most important number. So I think you are right, the platform decides more and more, and on tiktok, nearly nobody cares.
@@ride_run_wild good point, but youth gets older and why not have both platforms for those two audiences, where else are they gonna go when they get older? When you're 30, you still wanna be on TikTok? And trying to be something you're just not is never a good business idea.
constantly crying at these changes to Instagram & it so saddening that images reach is pretty dead right now. Shame. I can't find any other platform that works as well, but considering Twitter & even Vero.
Twitter has been really good for me. Vero, not so much. But everyone's experience is different!

Instagram does not support photos at all. Not any more. I've been posting my photos on Instagram, Flikr & Twitter but I am getting less new followers everywhere atm, especially Instagram. Instagram feels a bit pointless.

To me, it kinda shows a greater lack of vision. Today, it is a heavy advertising site. Advertisers most likely may not be keen at pitching to teens and being embedded among teen videos about nothing.

Great video, I feel like I am learning so much from you. You seem to have all the information I have been looking for, without sounding like a crazy influencer type narcissistic nutter. Thank you. Strange thing is, I have stopped producing reels and have just been posting great images and my engagement has never really been better with some of my latest my photos. Some of my reels have been reached by millions of viewers on the platform, but never really helped in growing my account. I feel that we are not being told everything about the changes. My account is not big, but the reach of my images has elevated considerably since I stopped pushing reels. I wasn't expecting this at all. Has anyone noticed this happening? Where it's exactly the opposite of what Instagram is saying with regards to our photos. Curious to hear your thoughts. Please note, I am quite old (so don't fit into the demographic that IG wants) and I have no idea what NFT is. I am just not up with these things at all. Just trying to create good content for the love of good photography.

YES! I got sick of making reels..and when i stopped and just started pushing photos I noticed the same thing! More genuine engagement rather than reels for at least!
Well these changes sound horrendous......Instagram used to be so good before all this generic copy and paste video shit with no individuality.
Yeah, it’s a shame really. They say video is where they are seeing growth with reels, I think they are also seeing decline in experience but they aren’t as aware of it.
I haven’t been a teen for 19 years!

Used to post almost every day on Instagram with the same hashtags back in 2017-2018. Had photos reshared and had over 300 likes, but then they keep changing the algorithm. Ironically, I honestly feel my photos are better now compared to the ones I posted in 2017, yet it's getting less engagement. It's frustrating. But that's social media in general. Nowadays, I am switching gears to UA-cam and restarted my channel doing music again. Just a passion, for now.
That's a good move mate, UA-cam is a very hard but fair platform, it rewards good work. Instagram is a hard and unfair platform.

Point one is spot on. I feel like Reels implementation & algorithm is really messy. Especially how when you view a Reel from your standard feed in full screen it then drops you into a Reels only feed of random accounts. Yuck.
Also: Everyone is using 3 “bass hit” or “unveil” surprise type songs and it’s boring and repetitive. Stop! 😆
Have had to unfollow a lot as the reels are boring or not relevant. Not what IG wants I think.
I hate this new video forward platform. Guess I’ll be seriously considering a switch to a different platform.
Just recently quit posting to poisonous IG ☠️ , zero engagement, zero growth, zero fun! Started focusing more on my UA-cam channel. Best decision for the New year!

At this point Flickr is the only place that doesn’t butcher our images and gives us some respect

The algorithm labeled a video of a guy fishing as violence on my 93k follower account. I got no option to review and it’s been throttling my account for over a month now along with removing ALL monetization.
Great video. I am not a photographer, I don't like most social media, and only use IG and Pinterest because I love seeing photos, TikTok is definitely not for me... the idea that IG will turn in a TikTok 2.0 is a real shame.

Instagram is for sure a demanding place with its constant changes to keep up with the algorithm. I have noticed a change with posting quality pictures on my account the end of this year as well! Hopefully we'll see a turnaround in the new year!

I will never get on board with TikTok it's a bunch of out of sync copycat crap. people lip syncing and 90% of content is not original. Also vertical recording sucks for guitar players. wish they would incorporate full screen horizontal on instagram

I really think Instagram needs to focus on what they are best at, which is photo sharing. I believe them wanting to be the new Tik Tok is going BBC to backfire. Teens and influencers want attention and they get it most on Tik Tok. Many Instagramers like me frankly don’t really enjoy the Reels feature.
My photo reach is only about 300 - 1000. I get 30k - 70k reach for reels 😅 I almost don't want to post images anymore and its sad. I'm a digital artist and its so hard to get any intrest for static images.
Mess with the close friend list is dangerous because Instagram will disable you for adding to many people to close friends list
Simple answer… make everyone your “close” friends!

I feel like the reels have ruined Instagram, you can post great photos but if you're not posting reels you don't get much love
I don’t know why but now, every time I post a video (as a video post), Instagram converts the video post into a reels post… that’s super annoying!
Is there any way to revert this behavior?
I wanted the chronological feedback since the day they ruined it. Rather than enhancements increase the ability to fix hacked pages and report inappropriate content that includes children and trafficking.

Instagram is dead and has been for like the past 2-3 years.
They’ve been trying to turn Instagram into a new version of Fb which I hate.
What I would like to know is why it's still being called social media. It's just not (anymore).

In my opinion they change to much, i do understand its a evolution but wanting to be their own TikTok is just stupid but i guess there is room now for a other photo app, like insta use to be...
I'm just so confused why Instagram is pushing video so hard, when UA-cam already exists and is doing a fantastic job and has a huge audience of ALL demographics. Sigh.

interesting video and I look forward to next video.. right now I feel we are slaves to what Instagram (or any other platforms) what's us to do, the quality of your work is irrelevant if you are not operating like they want you to operate. Its all been about reels we know that, I for one can't stand them, rare occasion I watch more than 2 seconds of any reel because it fails to captivate my attention.

Something I would like to see are live videos ONLY for close friends lists. This would make it possible to do live streams for my patrons and supporters in a simple and easy way. Perhaps this is already possible and I simply missed it, but it doesn't seem like it's possible as of now.
I’m not sure but I think that’s the kind of thing that IG would work towards (that’s just my opinion)
What about putting montages of still photos into reels?? Not sure if this would really do anything to help with reach or growth of a primarily photo based account, just thinking out loud. I'm primarily forcing myself to help me improve my photography, but that could be done on any platform really. Thanks for sharing your insights.
People do that right now, personally I don’t find it super entertaining and I don’t seem to get recommended those videos.
Funny because they censor my music all the time with B.s. dcma claims from UMG. I also was so consistent they thought I was a bot. Now I just message friends because it is all I can do. 💀💀💀
I still don’t get teens tik tok want to be ? They don’t have money all they want is monkey entertainment so how they going to get decent Advertisers, my demographics are not teens🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
I can think of a hack for this IF the reels page becomes the main landing page? Maybe export photos as video files after extending the still to repeat over many frames?
That's quite easy to spot programmatically, and decide whether to show it to users or not.
My friend posts pretty much all photo content and is getting incredible reach I’m talking over 100k a week her page is growing really fast too right now she is just over 3k and her reach and likes are incredible
I found your video very helpful. I grew my instagram account to 300k but now I'm noticing a drop off in followers. I still maintain that having an email list is the way to go, it's old school. I recently started Patreon, which has been a game changer for me. Interestingly enough, my customers aren't enjoying IG as much either, and I listen to what they want.
In terms of where I may want to sell my illustrations, I'm thinking about canva and creative market.

Thanks for an informative video! Some good news there too, about the option to turn on chronological feeds. I don't use IG as a marketing platform but rather a mix between social, and as a portfolio of sorts. I had quit Instagram for posting my photography because of what it had become (algorithms, that IG decided what I "wanted" to see, too many ads, and more), but then I heard the news that you can now post using your computer, so then I recreated an account for my photos. Depending on how the platform will work in the future, I may just keep my account to keep following my friends. I have another account where I post about my guitar progress and some music videos. To create a more decent portfolio, I'm planning to use my own website.
Honestly, engagement aside IG has never been better for photographers it's just that lack of engagement is a big problem. Your own website is the best way!

I think they need to stop trying so hard to use the same feats that tiktok has and focus on helping creators monetize their content! They also “test” in the US but they need to just launch a creator fund for EVERYONE. 😂

Thanks for your videos and advice! I have seen my account stall and Instagram choosing what I want to see is not freedom of choice and Instagram seems focused on short term profits over long-term quality. I'm seriously considering my own food blog where I can post recipes and photos as I choose to post verses Instagram choosing for me. As a 26 year retired military and combat veteran a corporation shouldn't have the right to infringe on my rights.

Recently I have been getting a lot more inactivity on my Twitter and one place I never thought I would is FB groups which is a surprise.
I think it’s also a quiet time of year on socials, many people are busy and focussing on home life, and rightly so.
I’m about as far as can be from their professed new target demographic. Having lost the interest of younger people, going to be really difficult to get them back.
Hopefully things will settle down and we can have our reach back.
