Today you're going to meet Gizmo, Soap & Clay Kidlet #2's cat. And I'm going to make some new shampoo bars that I'm obsessed with. We are using the "clays" that we played with a few days ago - specifically amla and shikaki - to build a new shampoo bar that I think is going to be great for curly hair. I will give you a recipe and tell you all about the why behind the things that we incorporate. Make it, try it, have some fun!

Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.

Yep, MOST calico cats are female... I think she's beautiful. I make syndet bars and all of my customers go crazy over them, but I've been looking for a great cp bar... I'm definitely going to use this as a base recipe and tweak it for a new line I'm working on for men. Thank you for being you. You are breath of fresh air and I appreciate the science behind all of the information you give. I watch some of your videos with my husband and he thinks you're a hoot :)
I just made a small batch of these for myself to try 30 minutes ago, using HP, and added coconut milk powder, and marshmallow root powder, and added Tussah silk and a soapnut to the lye water, but I didn't have any buckthorn. I can't wait to try it!
The color of the bar doesn’t freak me out one bit. You mentioned that the Amla power might be good for gray hair. Well I buy pigmented blue shampoo and conditioner for my gray hair. I worry it will stain my shower. It’s that scary. Your shampoo bar is natural and doesn’t stain. So, the color of your shampoo bar doesn’t scare me. I’d use it, for sure!!!
Old wives tale (and I’m an old wife, so it might be true) if a calico chooses to come live with you she brings good luck with her. Nowadays we need all the good luck we can get, right? Such a cute kitty.
Hi, the shampoo bars that use the coconut noodles (can't remember the name) are sulfate-free.... supposedly hair color stays longer. What do you think about sulfate-free shampoos? Next, how are cold process shampoo bars on hair color? If the sulfate-free shampoos are better....is cold process shampoo bars sulfate-free? Wonderful videos....and your sense of humor! Also, your fur babies are beautiful!
Hey! Lots of questions! ❤️ shampoos that are marketed as sulfate free really mean that they don’t contain detergents, primarily SLS. That doesn’t really mean they’re easier on color treated hair, though. But to that, cold process soapmakers very rarely use SLS in their soaps, so cold process shampoo bars also contain no sulfates!

This shampoo bar looks great!! 💞 I totally don't have a problem with the colour at all and I'm blonde. I'm so glad to see you making shampoo from cp soap. I get so irritated with the die hard syndet shampoo makers go on ad nauseum about how cp shampoo is bad for your hair and how the ph is too high blah blah blah blah! I'm so sick of hearing it. I make cp shampoo and LOVE IT!! I just might have to try the Amla powder. I almost bought it once before because of all the benefits too. Thanks so much for sharing!
So allergic to cats that I end up in the ER with asthma with the slightest cat scratch, but LOVE them so much. These two are very beautiful. :-(

Great recipe & thank you! I've been looking for a recipe to try. For the buckthorn, do you use liquid extract or powder? Also, any plans on making a conditioner to go with this shampoo? Would be great to see!

Did you ever make shampoo bars or soap bars without saponified oils? I used all of these herbs on my hair as a rinse or a mask and I love them Really nice shine and thickness - Tracy
Like a Sydnet bar? I did a syndet shampoo video around a year ago, I think - I bet you could incorporate this stuff into syndet bars as well!
If I wanted to add another kind of clay(additive) but wanted to keep both the amla and shikaki, would need to subtracted or increase something? Timo
That happiness you feel when you have all the ingredients. I’m making this. I’m normally a Syndet type of gal for hair but I haven’t tried a saponified shampoo bar in like 7 + years. I’m revisiting it. Does your textured people like this or the carrot one better?

In cats, color is a sex linked gene. If a cat has more than two colors, it is female A male could be calico if it's a chimera - two fertilized eggs fuse into one which is extremely rare. It can be hard to tell if a kitten is male or female when they have a lot of hair on their junk. Love the kitten and the shampoo bar recipe.
Actually one in about 3000 calico kittens is male, but they are sterile. They are not chimeras.
Just made this, I’m really concerned though that I might have put to much lye in, I read it but after I was done and it’s thin, I looked at lye amount and am second guessing myself about lye amount.🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️

Hi Mrs. Soap & Clay, I would love to try this recipe. Is this an ideal recipe for natural hair for a black person like me?
Hey! So my kiddo has type 3 hair and it’s been working well for her, washing 2x a week. That said, I have only tested this with my natural hair testers for about 3 weeks. So far, so good with this formulation, and most of the 30 testers I have for that hair type have been using it as a co-wash once a week with a conditioner mask.
Aah.. kitty is gorgeous... more than likely a girl by the colouring... if not.. extra special as calico males are about 1 in 3000 or so.. thanks for the great video as always.
Seeing the colours of your bars gives me a sigh of releaf... I have used the same powders and got the same effect.. even got amla oil and tried that... also dark.

Hello! May I ask you a complicated confusing question?
I want to make this recipe but I want to change the coconut oil for Babasu and Karanja oil. I wanted to know what would be the right ratio for these 2 oils to add.
Also, I don't have Backthorn extract but I do have honeyquat.. would that be OK to substitute?

I think shikakai is pronounced shi ka kaai.. I could be wrong.. ☺️
Correct. Shi ka kaai. Like cobra 'kai'.
And amla is pronounced, arm-laa. Arm as in the body part, and laa as in laa laa land.

The easiest way to know if that beautiful baby is female or male is to take her to the vet for their shots and the vet can tell you.

Also, I don't think the dark bars are problematic.
Also also, I have used some of my charcoal bars (not specifically shampoo bars) on my hair and I do think they darken my hair just a bit, which I like because...stray greys are thing for me now. OH! And said stray greys sometimes do weird frizzy curl things...but not always and my hair has always been straight naturally. So also weird!
So I’ve been using this one for about three weeks, and have had no problems with it on my straight hair! I think it’s a winner for multiple hair types.
Has Mr. Soap & Clay tried it on his beard?

Not all calicos are girls but if you get a male that is not sterile, you are in the money

Yeah I read that a male calico with all colors represented is super rare, so I’m going to assume girl. 😂
@@pattiemoseley8752 I have only heard of male torties and calico when living in Hawaii and it is due to extreme over breeding and inbreeding, as they are over run with stray cats
@@wookiewook673 we do have male calicos here but 99.9% of them are sterile. If you do happen to get one that is not, you will be very rich
She should be a female because of the color... I can tell you if she is a female or male if you send a picture lol but also if you look up online you can see pictures that show how to tell
See, my sister in law spent more time than she probably would have liked looking at UA-cam videos and inspecting the back side of this cat. They’re pretty sure it’s a girl, but we were told it was a boy when it was rescued, thus the confusion. 😂
@@MrsSoapAndClay for some people it's hard to tell.. I have seen cat breeders try to say you can't tell what sex the kittens are when they are born... which is not accurate lol I've been a vet tech since 2003 and can tell easily now... but being long haired I can see it being a bit harder for people who haven't seen a million cat rears 😂 the colors suggest female though... I'm sure when you take her/him to be fix they will tell you for sure either way 😊

Gizmo is most likely a girl because calicos statistically are girls 99% of the time. To be extra sure if you check under the “hood” and she has what kinda looks like a semi colon it’s a girl. In your last video you mentioned thinking cats were in short antisocial. Well I’m sure you’ve sense seen otherwise, because they can be insanely snuggly and social. I have one that demands to be held to the point of jumping into our arms and another that demands you sit down so she can curl up in your lap. All four of mine purr constantly and have zero aversion to strangers. Kitties are the best and yes I’m 100% biased.
The clay mixture had my inner 5 year old giggling immature thoughts. Cp shampoo bars still super intimidate me because they seem like they’d be hard to formulate in a way that for my hair wouldn’t cause issues. The solid syndet bars I buy I love though and have been better for it then any liquid shampoo and conditioner I’ve tried.
The color wouldn’t bother me at all and just like with regular cp soap bars I imagine any coloration it departs would rinse out. Yet another recipe of yours to add to my list to try out 💚
I like that you are using the traditional Indian herbs .. Amla , shikakai and Reeta ( soap nuts) which are very common and natural in India'.. it's been passed down from centuries. In families. it's funny when u talk about drugs and FDA . . I cannot wrap my head around that comment . No offense meant . A simple example is turmeric.. the western world with lab conducted experiments are raving about turmeric n over doing it. N tomorrow someone will come up with some crazy test result n then people will go .. it's not good. Blah blah. Usage at home is a tspn.. maybe even half .. not the pills which are popped in the name of good for health. Yes please . Plz chk the pronunciation of Shikakai on you tube. ❤️.

So I’m guessing that by now you know your Gizmo is a female. Genetically tortoise shell coat colour can only be achieved with the presence of the X chromosome 🥰🥰
