    hey guys, a few of you guys have gave me some feedback about the audio in my previous videos (Thanks!) So I have made some changes to my mic setup. What do you think about the sound quality in this video? I know it's definitely not perfect has I've clipped the audio in a few places. But hopefully it is better than my previous videos? Please let me know what you think!

      Photo By Richard Excellent and very thorough review! Thank you for taking the time to review this smartphone after weeks of use and thousands of photos taken. This is really the only way to know what use in real life is like. I’ve been on the fence with the P20 Pro, but after watching this I think I’ll order from the UK and import to the US. Also your audio was good but not great, volume is a bit low. I had to wear headphones to hear your audio clearly.

      Thank you for watching the video Jeff. Yes I do normally love to spend at least two weeks on a product before I work on the review and longer if possible :). And thanks for the feedback re audio. It's one of the thing I am still learning and haven't quite get it right yet. I've just recorded another video (p20 pro) but I screwed up the audio again.. oh well...

      Hi Richard, was just about to make a comment on AUDIO - when I saw this. IMHO normalizing the audio levels will help to some extent. On my comp I have to frequently readjust the loudness.
      BTW the review is excellent - I am just about to order it. Thanks

      Thabks Leica dad! I am really amazed by what Huawei has done this time and I am so impressed now I am thinking of using the p20 pro as my main camera for my Japan trip later this year and leave all my big digital cameras home. (Will still bring a film camera) Yeah the great thing about competition is one will push other to catch up or do a big jump.

    Hi. Richard. Can you manually open the aperture to shoot at night rather than using the night mode for night time videos...? It does have 1.6 f correct?

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  5 років тому

      Hi S.E.A Roaming Dude, the physical aperture is actually fixed at f/1.6 (just like almost any smartphone cameras, apart from the latest Samsung which has a 2 step aperture). When you are shooting under low light, the camera will bump up the ISO (sensitivity) and lower the shutter speed to increase the brightness of the output photo.

      Could it be that you have a P20 still available? If yes, would it still be possible to perdorm some critical testing please before and after upgrade? Fortunately, Huawei hisuite still allows to rollback to older versions of EMUI. I am sure that your deep knowledge of photography would finally clarify this issue.
      If not, what critical tests would be recommended to compare camera performance and between different software versions?

    Mate 20 pro user here, I recommend turning off the Ai, it gives unreliable results, the sharpening is agressive and in low light the noise removal almost makes a cartoonish look. The night mode is amazing, it gets so much detail and light. Lightroom doesn't have profile for the cameras yet, so no vignette/distortion corrections. Do I have a Raw file from the monochrome sensor ?
    Do you think is better to achieve a raw file from the pro mode and then convert it in lightroom into a bw photo ?

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  6 років тому

      No you don't get raw from monochrome mode. Re RAW vs monochrome jpg, if you want to edit your photo, I would say raw is better as it has higher bit count and also you have more flexibility in colour to mono conversion. If you don't want to do much edit or just very simple curve edit, then monochrome would be good as it allows quicker workflow

    • @bronchitemorale
      @bronchitemorale 6 років тому

      @@TheRealRichardWong thanks for the reply. unfortunately I do not understand what sense the monochromatic sensor has if the quality is not the same as the raw :/

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  6 років тому

      Quality is the Monochrome JPG is good and very sharp as it takes advantage of the monochrome sensor. But since there is no RAW output, the RAW from colour sensor gives you more headroom IF you want to do some editing yourself. So for people who doesn't want to edit, the monochrome sensor output is great for them

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  6 років тому

      And the monochrome sensor is also used to create the depth map for portrait mode and aperture mode as well.

      Canal do OTA probably can push 2-3 stops before image quality drops too much. P20 pro vs rx100, I would say rx100 image quality is still better because of it's 1inch sensor. But on the other hand, p20 pro can do better low light image and it's a camera you will carry all the time

      Photo By Richard It would be great if the phone or phone case had a little sliding door. I use the Huawei casing and cover the lens with a piece of paper held down with masking tape. the smooth surface allows me to reuse the tape a couple of times. Btw, i use the monochrome mode for high contrast situations and i am very happy with the results :-)

      yes that might work! Maybe you could design one ;) Oh yes the monochrome mode is great!! However one thing I forgot to mention in this review is, I would still like to see some picture profile for the monochrome mode so I can choose higher / mid / lower contrast output to suit the photo I'm capturing. Huawei, if you are reading this, please add a photo profile to the monochrome as well PLEASEEEEE :)

    I have a mate 10 (not mate 10 pro), and learned from huawei yesterday that it saves jpg files at 90% quality by default, and it is not adjustable to increase or decease that quality. I don't know why huawei would care if we would want to save it in higher quality even though the file size would be bigger, particularly since when you shoot in RAW in pro mode you're saving a file which is about 10 times bigger than a jpg file. I would think that that is my business if I want my pictures to take up more memory. Is jpg image saving quality adjustable in the P20 pro? Also, does the P20 pro give you the option of a having a cropping guide visible on the screen when you are composing a photo, or a live composing histogram? None of these are options on mate 10. If the P20 pro doesn't have these options either, everyone please contact huawei like I have done and suggest that they include these features in their next update.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  6 років тому

      Hi Barry, thank you for the comment! Having the option to adjust JPG quality would be great. But to me, what I want more is the setting for adjusting the strength of noise reduction, sharpening as they have a much bigger impact in the output photo than the JPG quality settings itself. Live histogram would be nice but most cameras' (i'm talking about DSLRs/mirrorless) live histogram is base on JPG which is flawed and not accurate. Would be good to have this features in the factory camera app but personally I would rather see other improvements first. For example, having a picture profile in the Monochrome mode. Or adjusting the strength of the AI adjustments as mentioned in my review. But yes definitely give feedback to Huawei if you want certain features implemented.

    • @barrysharoff6537
      @barrysharoff6537 6 років тому

      Richard, thanks so much for your quick reply. More importantly, thanks for the important tidbit of education regarding what is more important than a jpg quality setting. I would still like to see the option of a jpg quality setting, though, since I have noticed that the image size at 90% is frequently much smaller than photos I have taken with my previous phone, a moto x pure edition (2015), which has a similar mp camera. A smaller image size to begin with has got to affect the quality of the edited photo in editing, doesn't it, since the image size shrinks dramatically when applying some edits, which means a printed photo will look crappy beyond a certain size? Or am I wrong in what I just said? Thanks so much for your expertise. Nice video, by the way.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  6 років тому

      Hi Barry. In theory you are absolutely right. With the same compression algorithm, smaller file means more information got thrown away and result is drop in image quality. However there is a diminishing return when you increase the JPG compression setting beyond a certain point. Human eyes usually cannot easily see any difference between a medium high and very high quality JPG. I did a test, I resize one of the photo I shot to 10MP and save out two versions of JPG. One is around 9mb and one is 2mb. And then I compare them side by side, even when examining at 200% zoom, I could barely see any difference at all.
      You would normally see difference only if you repeatedly saving the same file. After a large number of resave (10+) then you will start to see the drop in image quality in the smaller file but normally we won't resave the same photos that many times (and if you plan to, save it to a loseless format such as TIF temporarily until you finish all your editing)

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  6 років тому

      P20 Pro. The camera on the P20 is good, but it's not revolutionary like the triple camera setup on the P20 Pro. Yes you can get best photo quality if you shoot in Pro mode and output as RAW then post process yourself. However, with the master AI, even shoot in normal "photo" or other creative modes you can still get pretty decent results. Maybe the JPGs are a bit oversharpned if you look at photos at 100% zoom, but it's not really noticable when viewing it normally like on social media or even full screen on your computer

    I can't believe all those great features the P20 Pro has with the camera, star trails and so on, I have the note 8 and looking now at the note 8 camera features just suck, why can't Samsung add those features??? Do they have any apps that can do that guess not. Truth be told I've tried out the P20 Pro and loved it but what stops me from selling my note 8 is the pen feature. BTW note 9 will be coming out shortly and the camera features will still suck.

      Thanks Richard - my P20 Pro (which I've only had for 10 days) came with a Micro Card cartridge bigger enough for 2 Micro Cards, but one was blocked off - can all P20's be used as Dual Sim, or did they release different versions? - thanks - Peter.

      Hi Peter, I believe the single sim and dual sim versions of P20 Pros have slightly different hardware/firmware so unfortunately not some can only support single SIM.

    Is there way to get google camera port for the P20 pro ...just got my p20 pro ..the rear cameras are great but the front camera beautifies even when set to zero . Please let me know an alternative that's like Google camera port.

      @TheRealRichardWong  6 років тому

      I haven't really try the front camera much myself but the few photos I took looks OK. I will put a selfie sample in my blog review coming up very soon. Have you tried shoot in non portrait mode? Otherwise you could always just get any of 3rd party camera app?

    Great review! I just found your channel. What does and does not apply from all the things you have said to the regular P20? I'm buying it, so I'm interested if the Night Mode and sensor size is the same on it as the P20 Pro?
    Thanks!

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  6 років тому

      hi Mole! The main difference between P20 Pro and regular P20 is the P20 Pro has the new triple camera setup with 40MP RGB camera and 3x optical zoom, while the P20 has the similar camera setup as the Mate 10 - i.e. dual camera and therefore no large 40MP sensor and 3x optical zoom. Camera app is almost identical apart from lack of optical zoom or 40MP RAW output. Most (or all?) of the master AI features, Pro mode..etc are the same on both phones.

      Richard Wong Thanks! And by the way the 5x zoom you mentioned in the video is already a thing. Oppo just confirmed their next flagship is going to be able to do it, lol

      haha ok let's see who'll reach 999x zoom first! btw, I would highly recommend getting the P20 Pro if the price difference between the two is around 20% or less.

    Interesting review. I am not a fan of EMUI or the fact that it only has a 1080p screen. So I would like to now what you think about the Google Pixel in comparison to this phone.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  6 років тому +2

      Yes not everyone likes the EMUI. I have shown the phone to quite a few people who don't like the EMUI as well and the general feedback I got is the latest EMUI 8.1 has actually fixed quite a few things they don't like with the previous EMUI. So maybe give it a try at a shop next time and see if you feel the same?
      Re Pixel, I assume you mean Pixel2? The Pixel2 and p20 pro are really quite different even they both are Android phones. The Pixel2 has a much simpler design. From the stock Android, to single camera to the design of the phone. The p20 pro is the completed opposite, with fancy body design and colour scheme, complicated triple camera setup..etc. I haven't use a Pixel2 enough to give comments but I feel between the two, it really come down to which approach/design you like more.

    • @mrcjstudio
      @mrcjstudio 6 років тому +1

      Photo By Richard I agree that the pixel 2 and the p20 Pro are two different phones. The only advantage I see the p20 pro has over the pixel is the design. I'm hoping the pixel 3 will fix this though.

    • @jzvr5842
      @jzvr5842 6 років тому

      Pixel has a terrible screen, higher resolution but the quality is actually worse than the 1080P panel the P20 Pro has.

    • @mrcjstudio
      @mrcjstudio 6 років тому

      JZ VR Really? Even with the software update they pushed out months ago? I kind of find it hard to believe that an OLED panel can be worse than a 1080p screen on the Huawei

    • @TheRealRichardWong

      So you are taking photo in normal photo mode. When composing the photo, you quickly move the camera around and the screen is not updated smoothly. Is that what you mean?

    shame the 960fps is faked

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  6 років тому

      Hi what do you mean by that?

    • @marklola12
      @marklola12 6 років тому

      the phones processor is not capable of letting it actually shoot 960fps look at all the slow mo examples most of them have severy warping and juddering because it is not capturing full 960fps its capturing a lot less and the phone is filling in the gaps (missing fps) to make it look like proper 960fps but it does not work. Its a bit like if I shoot a video in 30fps and use twixtor in after affects to slow that footage down it will have loads of warping and juddering because it is not enough fps to make it smooth slow motion.
      The processor being not powerful enough is exactly the reason why it can not shoot 4k at 60fps and why the 1080p 60fps does not have stabilisation because the processor can not do it, there will never be a update for the phone to change this as it is a hardware limitation

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  6 років тому

      Hi Markolla12, while I definitely agree the 960fps footage has quite a bit of artifact, I'm not convinced the fps is fake. I've done some quick side by side comparison with Samsung S9' shooting really fast moving scene and the results look very similar and the actual FPS captured definitely look the same to me.
      I will try shoot some more test footage to double check as it's easy to see the difference between interpolated frames (no matter it's frame blending, optical flow or any tricks) when you playback frame by frame.
