The Fitness Industry's BIGGEST LIE (Looking Fit vs. BEING FIT)

In this video we discuss the dichotomy of looking fit vs. actually BEING fit. We analyze the concept of "fitness" as it is marketed and sold by the modern day fitness industry, the discrepancy between what the people ACTUALLY WANT and what they are getting, as well as what the ultimate purpose of this channel is.
Perhaps the greatest lie that has been sold to the masses by the modern day fitness industry is that its image of "fitness" is actually, truly representative of that concept. The reality is that the image of fitness that you see sold to you, especially now on social media, is often times the farthest thing from actually being fit. Often times it's even the opposite, where the people representing the "picturesque" ideal of fitness are actually some of the unhealthiest people around.
Now, I have no qualms with people doing what they want to do with their own bodies. Let the PED users drug themselves to death in the name of building muscle. That is their prerogative. What I do have a problem with, however, is deceiving people into thinking you are selling them one thing when in fact you are actually selling them another.
In the case of the fitness industry, people seek out information because they want to become FIT. They want to become healthier and build a more resilient and capable body so that they feel, look, and perform better. This is the product they are told they are getting, yet the information being provided by many social media fitness experts is often not congruent with this ideology in whole. They have the looking fit part covered, but they do not do well to address the BEING FIT part.
It has been my experience that information dedicated to helping you guys LOOK FIT is vast and prolific and very easy to find. But information helping you to actually BE FIT is much more scarce. In my opinion, an important part of fitness is....being fit. My audience agrees with this assertion. Thus, there is a very real disconnect at play in the modern day fitness industry where the majority of information being put out only satisfies half of the equation here. The purpose of this channel is to help fill this void, and to help you guys find true fitness in the process.

Speaking my language, brother. Our bodies don’t know or care what they look like. Aesthetics are a result of actual fitness and performance. I wish we could return to an emphasis on performance. We’d be healthier physically and mentally.

We would probably look better generally as well since so many of the strategies aimed towards Aesthetics are unhealthy in ways that backfire physically and psychologically causing most who view aesthetic as an end in itself to actually look worse then if they focused on Fitness and performance.

As for the golden age I remember Tom Platz in Muscle and Fitness emphasizing how flexible he was and how much he loves playing tennis. They even had photos of him on the court. Or Franco Columbo doing strongman feats and hanging upside down by the tops of his feet (toes curled up toward the shins).
And for bodybuilding, if smoking and sitting on the couch eating cookies got you the most jacked, that's what bodybuilders would do. They will do anything to achieve the "look" because bodybuilding is a beauty contest. Fitness and health are not a consideration in judging.

And all of a sudden I realized how much of a saturated shithole the fitness industry actually was. Nowadays with Instagram and TikTok (the rise of little SARM goblins), it’s becoming even so much worse. I really hope your message comes across to save these kids’ lives since they really don’t know any better.

It's sad in many ways. It's a bit odd that we have grown to conflate ultra leanness with health and fitness. Sure, being fat is not healthy. But neither is being ultra lean. It doesn't really make sense, it's almost like the industry trying to swing the pendulum back in the other direction with the ongoing obesity crisis, but then going too far.

Objectively strong dudes with good conditioning (not the disgusting starvation pageant competitive bodybuilders care about) and good dietary patterns look amazing. It seems that the fitness industry has become obsessed with showing folks how to game the system instead of showing them the process of its namesake.

That RPG character analogy is what I’ve been telling myself ever since I started working out seriously. What’s the point of benching 3 plates if I get gassed walking down the beach? What’s the point of running 10 miles if I can’t do a pull up? Training to be well rounded really is fulfilling for me as I’ve always wanted complete mastery of the body and to just be the best physical version of myself in many aspects. Love the video and think your channel has a fantastic purpose even though I have some different thoughts regarding physique for my own goals. It has only been up until this last 5 years where we have seen this huge shift in the world of fitness, strength, and hypertrophy where the internet has just blown things out of proportion. In any other point and time in history your philosophy would be the prevailing idea. Going as far back as fitness in greece. The body was a means to an end physically speaking. What could the body do. This idea rains true right up until 2010's when suddenly the way the body looked became more important then what it could do. Like you said even the golden era of bodybuilding always had some display of fitness surrounding the physique.

I pressed "like 👍" on this video before I even watched the video, because I already knew what ideas and beliefs you were going to share. Good for you for not selling out like other people on the youtube platform. It is sad how this world works, image is everything a lot of the time. I wish more people knew about Zyzz, he looked like a Greek God, but died at 22 y/o due steroids, Coke, and cigarettes. A kid.....dead. I also believe most of the men judging your physique know the difference between looking fit and being fit, but because of their own insecurities, they will knowingly ignore trying to be fit for the desperate attempts to look fit just to get approval on their pictures on social media. I've met so many guys in the gym that will buy steroids from a guy in a locker room, have no idea which type of steroid it is, or what it should be used for just in hopes of looking better in the mirror. Then they tell me they regret it because their body hasn't been the same since, E.D. , hormonal imbalances, which makes them feel and think very negatively.

The main muscle groups associated with athleticism, (the back, the lowerbody, and the delts) you’ve developed very substantially, which makes anything lagging behind from a size perspective look smaller. It’s also just very ignorant to think Alec here has never pondered the thought. He owns a mirror. That being said, keep up the good work Alec 💪

I played team handball (2nd biggest sport in Europe) for 20 years, 2 of those professionally, and now I coach a team for European competitions. Strenght is such a small part of being an athlete while athleticism, mobility, and conditioning are so much more important for being fit, it's enraging to see so many people on the tube overlooking these. Everything on youtube is about looking like a gorilla or looking like you could die from a papercut to your veins.

My own goals tend to lean towards having the best I can of all 3 things that being fitness/health/aesthetics. I don't think these 3 have to collide with each other as long as you leave PED's out of it and don't ignore one completely in favor of another. I eat a balanced diet and stay active for general health, I could do better with being consistent on cardio to keep my fitness high though it never really falls off and in terms of aesthetics that's just building mass without straying too far from being pretty lean (i.e. "bulk" up to like, 14% BF and then cut back down to 9-10% ish).

I definitely find that the mainstream focus on aesthetics has made me more judgmental over other people's appearances. Before beginning fitness I'd basically never pay attention to whether someone looks skinny or is significantly lacking in certain areas, but now that's one of the first things that jump to mind. It hasn't gotten to the point of body dysmorphia or where I think you have a lagging chest, just more of a subconscious bias against the appearances of people who don't lift, which I still think is an unhealthy mindset that I really wish I could get rid of.
There's another dichotomy in social media fitness which is conflating powerlifting numbers with real-world strength or fitness, which you've also touched on in "Why I don't like powerlifting"; but perhaps you could cover the social media aspect in more detail as well. This hasn't affected me as much, but I do think it applies to a lot of others. I remember a comment under one of your videos saying how you're focusing on general fitness to "hide the fact that you never got good at powerlifting". And indeed, one of the main reasons I've gotten into your channel is your focus on well-rounded fitness instead of the narrow focus on appearance or powerlifting that can be found everywhere else.

I think a strict muscle up requires an incredible degree of upper body strength and bodily control. I don't know about the act of the muscle up itself, but I do know that the training required to develop the physical capacities needed in order to be able to execute this movement well would be very beneficial.

Amen! 1) fitness depends on the task to be fit for, but in general, one would accept that we are talking about being generally fit for most physical tasks a human being would engage in as some sort of athlete; 2) so annoying when people talk about Trystan Lee or some goof that is way too lean and muscular, probably on PEDs, and only trains for bodybuilding, then they call that "fitness"

I really really really hate that a lot of people in the gym have no programming natural or otherwise. People in the discord server I'm in will be talking about I'm running this that and the other thing and they don't really have a plan I'm like what are you doing? I would rather be strong than look strong even though in the past year or so I have looked a little better.

Still I watch some of your videos, I listen to some of your ideas and analyze them, I take what I can use and don't mess with the rest. I respect you for what you are and admire your overall fitness, you ARE that RPG character with all stats. Actually I started watching your videos because I kinda liked your physique, in fact, you got me into weighted chinups and dips!! I don't mean to brag but we should all be this respectful. Understand that people have different goals and respect them for what they achieve. The sucked down bodybuilding look never makes me think fit, it makes me think emaciated and weak since I've been there for wrestling. What makes me think fit is actual demonstrations of being fit. Depending on your fitness goals, you will most likely look good by just training for that goal. As an example, getting strong as shit will entail building muscle and therefore looking better. Another example, say you wanna be a really good rock climber, you'll probably get a pretty good looking upper body and will probably slim down to be lighter, therfore looking better. There definitely needs to be a shift in the mentality of the fitness community. The number one focus should be on health/actually bring fit and looks secondarily. I say this should hold up even if you wanna be a bodybuilder, your health is the most important thing.

When I hear the word fit I think a mix of aesthetics and performance.
Athletic is for, well, athleticism. A sumo is athletic because that is the sport. Outside of sumo wrestling the carry over would be moving heavy objects, ie weight lifting. While a muscular gymnast would be "aesthetic" while being athletic in more areas than the sumo, hence more fit.

I’d like to think fitness is more health related that’s why Pete Rubish gave up trying to chase a big deadlift nowadays and instead is more focused on trying to run a sub 7 min mile @220. If he loses muscle trying to get more healthy & fit he loses muscle, which is the opposite of bodybuilding youtube gym bros who’s always in a surplus to grow muscle.
Only thing is fitness is not interesting to people and doesn’t get the views. People are very vain, shallow, and superficial only caring about hypertrophy & show muscles no pecs no sex.
Too much muscle also isn’t a good thing. Mike Israetel is 5’5 250 @ low body fat and he says the most he’s supposed to weigh is 180. All that extra muscle taxes the heart.
