I saw King’s X playing a gig in Largo, FL a few months back and Ty Tabor was running one of these. The sounds he was getting out of it were insane. Really impressed with what Orange has done.
When I saw Morrissey a few years back, his lead had two stacks and like 4 of these linked to each channel I believe? Yeah.....the big kids were hella using them 5 years ago, and this inspired my purchase choice.
Bought an Orange Crush Pro 120C backend of 2019 and sold off my Mesa 15 watt amp (which over the years has cost me more money than the amp cost me in the first place) about 2 days later. I constantly hear UA-camrs/reviewers saying that Solid State amps are so close to valves amps these days. But the truth is the Crush Pro series is just as good, if not better than most valve amps. I defy anyone to sit in front of me and tell me if I am playing a valve/tube amp or solid state amp when I'm using my Crush Pro 120 (Had a tone snob at the studio take this test and he picked the Crush Pro over his own tube amp). For me it's the best sounding amp for me period, valve/tube or solid state. For rock or metal this amp is just a total beast I have heard and played the Super Crush 100 and it is a great amp, but there really is not that much of a difference for me to buy the new one right now.
I’ve gigged one for a few years. It has fallen on the ground a couple times during transport, and other than the dented corners, it’s still running strong. After an hour in band practice, it has that “tube amp running hot” feel and easily feeds back when standing close to it. It even smells good. If you don’t need clean and dirty at the flick of a switch, the micro terror or terror stamp will get you there in a smaller package. But for a two channel amp, it does the job well.
I use a modeler with the terror stamp for powering a cabinet for monitor while running direct. the stamp has a surprising amount of volume and the tube in the preamp doesn't hurt
i have mine for several years now great amp not a tube amp but has great tones, plus thanks to Phillip for plugging my favorite company AMS there great to deal with there always awesome, best customer service I have ever seen
Phil, you give the most informative and user-friendly reviews of anyone on youtube ! Even when it is a sponsored video you give honest and realistic opinions of features whether good or bad that really help a buyer like myself make an informed decision. Never sounds like a sales pitch.
Anyone, Phil says thanks for watching to the end of the video, but I usually watch until Phil is wrapping up then stop. Does UA-cam count that as watching to the end or do I literally have to watch to the very end to make Phil’s dreams come true?
Thanks for that Orange Crush Pro 120 review. I bought mine right as Covid was starting, Feb of 2020. I use it with a Gibson LP Standard, a fender Strat and , get this, as a back up amp for my basses incase my Traynor YBA-3 fails live. That amp in clean mode is a solid bass amp for my Jazz bass, my Precision bass and my fretless Warwick Corvette. Good job bro, you nailed it.
I have had one for about a year now. It is my workhorse. This is the one I travel with and use more than any other head I own. I like to watch new vids on them to see if there’s anything to be learned. I never thought to run a tube screamer with it. Thanks man! Keep doing the work of the guitar gods!!
I’m 46 and just getting back into guitars. Am mostly a bassist , but there’s a special fun feeling about playing those petite 6 strings after messin on the bass. Like grabbing a toy after messing with tools. But yeah , I these vids have been like my best friend lately. Catching me up to speed . I love you man 🤘
hey, Phil if your sending this back to AMS tell them I'll buy it ( special demo price?) since I am local (Maricopa) I can pick it up. I used to shop in your store in Chandler often until it closed I really think this or a quilter is the future although I still love my valve amps
Phil after hearing the super crush 100 I think you’d really like it. The bottom end really tightened up at higher gain making it more useable for what I think you were going for. It’s worth a look for you
I have the orange crush pro 120 2x12 and the orange crush pro 60 and I love them both they both take pedals very well and even with out pedals they both are just amazing amps I am a big orange amp fan. you cannot go wrong with orange amps!
I love mine. I found the clean channel a little uninspiring, but with a few pedals the drive channel is so versatile. For most types of metal it needs some sort of od pedal to remove low end flubiness. As for tone quality and note separation, its excellent.
I own a Rockerverb and a Crush Pro 120 and I must say that I still love the Crush for what it has to offer. Yes the Rockerverb sounds more organic and is tighter with more boom to the low end, but the Crush is fun to play and really has its own character. When you crank up the gain it gets fuzzier and looser than the Rockerverb. With a clean boost of some sort you can get some very doomy filth out of it. It works on its own too. For metal I'd recommend a Tubescreamer of some sort to tighten it up because it's about as tight as parachute for underwear. I use it for practicing and there is something soothing about it that seems to make practice sessions last longer - plus it's great for low volumes as well.
Glad you enjoy the Orange CR120h Phil! I have two of them and I'm planning on keeping them as long as possible. Best solid state amp on the market for under a grand.
I bought both a CR120 and Super Crush with the intent on returning the one I liked less. SUPER hard choice even going back and forth between the two for a few weeks. Returned the CR120, kept the Super Crush .........started missing the raw, extra ballsy sound of the CR120. Sold the Super Crush. It just didn't have the same 'OOMPH' to it. Now I have the CR120 again! :D It's splitting hairs to be honest but I feel like I lost something with the Super Crush. CR120 is also less noisy, at least the way I set it up.
The rehearsal space my band practiced at had a Crush combo that I used when my "real" amp was in the shop. It was great: I didn't miss my tubes at all. Thanks for making this.
The Micro Dark also has surprisingly great cleans, even though it is not marketed toward that kind of player. This amp definitely plays above its pay grade
I have this amp and it's just amazing. Works great for bedroom practice, studio work and gigs. Takes pedals very well and best of all won't break the bank. Very sold amp.
I actually like the sound of the Orange product line. Definitely connects with the part of me that's firmly rooted in classic rock, pop & soul.. If I still chose to plug into 2-channel amps instead of the modeled single-channel signal chain with multi effects that I'vedepended on for nearly 20 years, I might own one by now.
I absolutely love my Orange Crush 120, i use it mostly with a multiscale 7 string in drop G, slap an eq pedal in the FX loop to control that low end and the low mids, with the usual od/noise gate in front and it becomes this huge sounding modern metal beast, just that fat juicy and articulate saturated tone!
Had mine for 2 years and my only issue is I wish it was a pinch more heavy in the bass and slightly smoother middle. I play jazz as a means to supplement my goth rock 90's habit. Aged 47, and of 7 bands with memories. I care for an autistic boy so I stepped off the stage for now. Great channel and good information here. Thanks!
Bought mine along with the matching 4x12 a few months ago after much research. Love it. My first head/cabinet amp after using combos forever. My combos now sound like crap in comparison. Thanks, Phil.
Idk if I should go with the 120 or the 60. OR if I should just wait until the supercrush releases lol. I am looking for a good stoner/doom setup and am set on one of these Orange amps.
The CR120 is amazing but for me the Super Crush 100 is fantastic, embellishes on all the best parts of the CR120 and adds an extra layer of fidelity and feel that's just amazing for a solid state.
Cool video I noticed when you turned up that gain it got real noisy that would be nice if it had a noise gate on the Amp to eliminate all hum I dig that Amp but I have had problems in the past with solid state Amps playing in places were there is alot of lighting they go crazy with buzzing and hum noise I wish there was some kind of button you could push to stop all the noise.
I just ordered one based on your review, I can’t wait to try it. I need an amp for home use that I can turn down low without it affecting the tone but what really swung it for me was the great reverb; I’ve been looking at reverb pedals that cost more than this amp so it was a no brainier!
Yeah, the Super Crush 100 is a brilliant amp. It even feels right in the room, has that nice low end push that makes valve amps so nice. Highly recommended.
Orange does a lot right with their solid state amps. In particular having a clean channel that actually goes into drive. I notice a lot of modern two channel SS amps have a 100% clean channel and then a drive channel that has no real good clean range to it, so you get no options for edge of breakup or good low gain sounds.
What happens if you are on the clean channel switch on the amp head but then click the channel switch foot switch button? Does it override the switch position? Always wondered this and haven’t been able to test it 😂
While I like the features on the newer Crush 100 coming out I really would love to have this one. It would pair so well with my Randall Thrasher 50. Thanks Phill.
Phil, starting at 7:47, is that with the tube screamer or just the amp? If it's just the amp, the difference between 11 o'clock and 2 o'clock (starting at 6:02) is nuts.
I pulled mine out of the shell and rack mounted it and use the 4 cable method to power line 6 POD HD pro. It is really loud and very inexpensive for what it delivers. If my line 6 went down I can just run an overdrive in front of the head an still get the sound I need.
Nissssssssssssssssssce 🍻 I wish it had switchable power wattage for bedroom play. If it had that more people would buy it! Sounds great & very affordable!
According to other reviews of this amp, because it's solid state it sounds pretty much the same at bedroom level as it does cranked, when you have the separate channels cranked and the master down low. I have one that I have yet to use because I am still deciding on which cab to purchase. I bought it when I did because this amp has been discontinued, and we now know it's been replaced with the Super Crush 100.
I have an Orange Crush 15R practice amp …which comes with and actual spring reverb tank. Doesn’t sound quite as good as the comparable Danelectro Nifty Fifty but it is still a great little amp.
Wow this orange sounds great. I mean, one of my favorites (Slipknot) mainly uses this company. Not sure which model Jim Root uses, but he gets some killer distortion from it
Can't believe you didn't try this year's ago..For the money I think it's the most versatile Amp out there..I bought and and years ago and now I save c and tear on running my tube amps..Still love my dark terror and Marshall dsl but the cr120 rips..
this was yet another amp i was persuaded to get by Mr dave simpson. its a fantastic amp. really really great (no, not for a solid state amp, its just great in general)
I own one, my first amp head, and first great amp. The only thing that I don't like is the low end on the dirty channel, it feels way to thin. Or a deep/resonance knob, it could be really useful. For context, I've got mine set on the dirty channel, mids and treble 'bout halfway, but bass maxed out, volume of the preamp maxed, gain at 3/4 of the way, maybe a bit more and STILL think it sounds thin
I have an CR120H with a 2x12 cab, great amp indeed, but in my opinion the clean chanel should have a 3 bands EQ, would become it in a perfect amp for me.
The eq does not come to life until you crank it. Ans the guys at orange want you to crank it. I owned the rockerverb mk3 and honestly the c120 killed it in tone comparison in the room. But the rockerverb def has a better recording quality about it.
I never use the clean channel. I roll off the volume on the gain channel for clean tones. Sorry but your wrong on your judgment because you did not use it right. Good job on misleading people. By the way your thin lizzy riff needed more gain and better eq adjustment.
As good as that amp is, the new Super Crush 100 sounds and feels much better. The Pro dirty channel tends to compress and get fuzzy the more the gain is turned up. The Super Crush 100 doesn’t fuzz out on the dirty channel. An SD-1 in the front sounds killer too.
Any issues with "occasional unexplained volume drop's"....Or issues with "crackling and noise?" Also any issues with input jacks?......I ask these questions because a used one at a very reasonable price just popped up in my area. I have heard many good things about Orange and the Crush series. I have never actually tried one. They are constantly sold out! ( a good sign perhaps?) I was already to jump on the deal....BUT....Doing due diligence I typed in "Orange Crush CR120 issues/ problems."....Apparently some say there are reliability issues that are inherent in the design. Is this true? Has anyone had to get one serviced? What are these like cranked up loud? I have a collection of amps, including all tube and "state of the art" digital amp modelling. ....In recent years I have gone back to good old, lightweight, reliable, easy to use, solid state or maybe 1 tube in the pre-amp. Plus a few analogue pedals. (Katana, Marshall HCFX, and Vox ValveTronix specifically).....Has anyone tried or owned those amps as well? How does the CR120 compare? Any input would be welcomed, thank you for listening. Cheers.
I have the combo of this amp. I like it and think it is very close sounding to a tube amp. I run it clean with a distortion pedal because the dirty channel is to vintage or classic rock sounding. Great amp but think a speaker change would set it off
I bought an orange crush 20RT a while ago and i've noticed that I stopped using the pedals i have b/c its dirty channel sounds so great to me. Plus i got an orange tabby and he approves. as always thx for the vid now im definitely getting one of these amps:]]
I played one in Guadalajara a few months back i thought It was a tube ampit sounded pretty good and i have had a ton of tube amos, my last ones being Mesas Mark v 90 and 35 and Fillmore 50 and Friedman 100 BE deluxe
I practice with one of these and for the money, it is an incredible amp. I could gig with it no problem in any bar. What I like abut it the most is the dirty channel has plenty of gain and cleans up really nicely with the guitars volume knob. Has an effects loop that takes my full pedal board. I paid $200 for it used and it is one hell of a value.

I managed to get the 120 combo for about $300 a few years ago. Great amp for practice or shows where you don't want to bring more expensive stuff.
The new Super Crush is the one you need to review it’s the solid state amp the Designer wanted to build.

how does the gain respond to rolling off the volume on the guitar? I always wonder if a SS amp can clean up as well as a tube amp can
If your gonna pick between cr120, super crush 100 and boss katana head which would u pick and why?
As good as that amp is, the new Super Crush 100 sounds and feels much better. The Pro dirty channel tends to compress and get fuzzy the more the gain is turned up. The Super Crush 100 doesn’t fuzz out on the dirty channel. An SD-1 in the front sounds killer too.
Hey Phil can you test out hard strumming overloading the input in the clean channel. Thanks
You make it sound GOOD Phil! \m/
I'm willing to bet regarding this amp taking pedals well would pair very nicely with the Line 6 hx effects pedal.
I gotta say Phil always does great gear reviews
Curious is the new Super Crush will compare. Neat.
What's the tobacco coloured jaguar looking thing hanging in the back?
Now you need to check out the SuperCrush 100, thing is monstrous
I played one in Guadalajara a few months back i thought It was a tube ampit sounded pretty good and i have had a ton of tube amos, my last ones being Mesas Mark v 90 and 35 and Fillmore 50 and Friedman 100 BE deluxe
What’s that distressed HH offset with triangle inlays in the back?
still waiting for a proper moonstone review
😂
Moon pie 🤣
What about the Orange Crush 35 RT?
I practice with one of these and for the money, it is an incredible amp. I could gig with it no problem in any bar. What I like abut it the most is the dirty channel has plenty of gain and cleans up really nicely with the guitars volume knob. Has an effects loop that takes my full pedal board. I paid $200 for it used and it is one hell of a value.
Great amp & takes pedals great
Real happy with mine, likes pedals
Crush *Pro* 120? Is this different from the normal Crush CR120? I know the new Super Crush replaces Op amps with jFETs...
But does your footswitch led turn on in dirty?
This is easily one of the best SS amps ever fucking rules especially when boosted
