10/10 the only kind of gear reviews we need.
Plug in. Play chords like I do at a music store and turn knobs to see what it does. Literally so much more helpful just for sound comparison. I don’t mind reviews that talk through it. But yours are a “I need info and need it yesterday”.
I like that. Thank you
They both sound really good, but I think the Super Crush 100 has a tighter bottom end and the midrange is more reminiscent of a Marshall, whereas the Crush Pro 120 is closer to a Rockerverb, with that signature loose, fuzzy midrange tone that put Orange amps on the map.
Exactly what I'm hearing in all the videos of the new amp. For the better imo.
@@andrewpepmeier268 to my ears, the new Super Crush sounds better, even though, I have a CR60C Combo, and it sounds amazing too, no regrets.
In person the Super Crush is tonally identical to the Rockerverb, just with less bottom end 🥊 when cranked. (Or at least 90% there)
The CR120 on the other hand is about 70% there imo. It’s a bit muddy with higher gain settings and still has that “Solid State spike” harshness with “high gain single not lines.”
Being a bit of a shredder 🎸 I sold it due to this.
They weren't kidding. The Super could definitely be a poor man's Rockerverb but still awesome. I'm excited to order one
I didn't think they could improve the CR120 sound, but boy was I wrong. The SC100 is so much tighter and brighter. I'm sold.
Orange makes the best solid state amps, hands down.
not really but some of the best. I love tech21 stuff, randall ss, peavey bandit and marshall like vs100r and lead mosfet. I d rank them as hi as the orange and vice versa without the one sounding or overlapping the other. For pure sound I don't think you can beat the tech 21 trademark series though.
Love my cr60, only thing I have beside it other than my tubes are the new quilters.
@@morellasgeorgios8449 you're right Marshall mosfet kicks ass. Peavey solid state is all over the place. Most early Peavey solid state is Stony Doom crunch... it's beautiful. The transtube amps are amazing but get kind of shrill and cheap in some of the Chinese made variants.. my favorites are Peavey Century, Orange Crush, Marshall Mosfet
Thank you for making this video!! I was looking for it, very useful 👍👍
Thank you! I wish EVERY comparison video was like this.
New one sounds better. They definitely improved it. Old one isnt bad but a bit tubby. Clean sound on super crush sounds thicker or more dimensional. These are pretty good for solid state.
Outstanding video providing a solid comparison of these two amps. Yet another solid addition to the Orange line. I agree with most comments below but can only pick up very slight differences between the two with my (starting to degrade) hearing... If I didn't already own a Crush Pro 120, I would definitely pick up this new amp head. If it ever dies though.... as if... the 120 is built like a tank just like all their other full size heads.
Love that sleep knock off riff during the high gain demo!
New one sounds much clearer and tighter with gain. Been looking for an excuse to upgrade from my old crush combo into a big boy head and 2x12 setup. Might have just found it!
The Super Crush is definitely a bit brighter and more crisp, and would probably be great for lead work and rock rhythms, but the CR120 has that punchy midrange fatness that I love for stoner/doom/prog metal. I play the CR120H into a PPC112 and an MX112, and the different tones of each cab compliment each other really well. The Super Crush looks awesome, but I still prefer my CR120 for the style of music that I play
Couldn't agree more. Sounds like we use it w/ the same applications. The Orange site says that the new Super is 70w into 16ohms, while the CR120 is 120 watts full power into either 8 or 16, so that also impacts the application for stoner/doom, etc. Plus, I use a tubescreamer to get that added crispness. I love the look of this new one, but may hold off.
@@milesskoog7675 - how many watts is the new Super Crush when run into a single 8ohm cab?
@@NickfromHighTide 100w. So, plenty for an 8ohm cab. I was concerned about the 16ohm as that's what I use. 70 watts isn't a lot when you're playing stoner/metal/doom. Current CR120 is 50 watts more in 16ohms as the CR makes full power at both 16 and 8 ohms.
What's your settings man ?
I have the cr120c, a 1993 Gibson les Paul studio tuned in C just messing around .
My power supply went out to my vox tone labs se so I'm just straight to Amp at the moment.
Not sure if you're asking about my settings? Gain at 1:00, treble at 1:00, mid at noon, bass at 1:00 and dirty channel volume to taste. I run a tube screamer with the gain at 0, volume at 3:00, and tone at noon. It really tightens up the sound and gives it a tad more cut.
I played both of these a few days ago. Through different cabs, so it's difficult to compare the tone, but I thought the super crush "felt" better. Especially with the preamp volume cranked! The cr120's response felt more like a "typical" transistor amp.
Hi. Every time there’s a new Orange Amp I think of your channel. Perfection In the way you compare amps…best on the Internet !
@@TobysGuitarGearDemos …Running a loop on all amps…clear miking… no talk…labels… different types of settings similar… and the Static camera! No need to unnecessarily move the camera all over trying to be Sam Raimi ….u have a Japanese monk’s sense of Electronic Zen !
I like the cr120 but I know I would cut out a lot of the lows, and the sc100 would already get me there. They both sound great, just about getting to know your tools. Great demo!
The Crush 100 sounds great, but I still prefer my CR120, sounds more warm and has a better low-end for what I play. Both have their place for sure. Orange rocks.
This was great thank you!!
just found your channel and this is fantastic. Just tone demos and no opinions
Masterful demo. Perfect.
Excellent work!!!
CR120 sounds thicker in the mids... more fat. Super Crush 100 has more presence all around. An EQ pedal in the loop will help with the CR120 if you want a brighter and tighter sound. So far I'm not sold on the Super Crush.
Ehhh. I sold my old cr120 because I could not get any presence out of it whatsoever. I had treble and middle dimed with bass on zero, and it was like a smidgen too low still. Eq kind of helps, but ultimately this new amp is an improvement. That much I can tell already - I loved my old cr120, its tonal palette just fell out of favor with what I needed to be able to do. This new one sounds fantastic for what I'm doing now. Tempted.
@@Diax1324 honestly you could have solved the problem with a speaker swap for your cab, i assume you are using v30s?
Had both, sold the cr120, new super crush 100 is just slightly more desirable for my style of playing. Both awesome amps and worth owning. The cr120 sounds significantly better through orange votw speakers where as i believe crush 100 sounds better with v30’s or celestion v types. I have it paired with eminence c-rex/ celestion g12 v type 2x12 that sounds incredible. “Keeps up” with most tubes, i’d be lying if i said it blew em away though. Much more reliable than a tube amp at a fraction of the cost. Both are Gig worthy for sure!
Great video. I still like the overall sound of the older CR120. I've been using one for a while now and to me it just has more bottom end, and thicker mid range.
The super Crush is Nice, But there is not Enough Of a Earth shattering Difference for me to Get rid of one of my very favorite Amps…!
( My 🍊CR 120 Pro…! ) Also I Love the Hall Reverb in my 🍊 CR 120 pro….!
They're both great, I have a huge soft spot for that CR120, one of the best amps I've ever played.
Just placed a preorder so I can use my Crush Pro 120 and Super Crush 100 in a stereo rig!
I use a 120 head with a ppc 2x12 and a cr60 combo for my stereo setup and they sound great. Albeit I eq/stage them differently but still..
A very excellent demo of both. Would like to have heard some lead playing.
I haven't heard it yet, but it already looks cooler.
Great comparison
I gotta say, I just tried these back to back at the guitar shop. And this video does a great job highlighting the slightly different characters in these amps. The Supercrush is a bit tighter in the mids and Crush Pro has a bit more of “sludgy” sound with the gain up. Both quite delightful, but I think I slightly prefer the Pro 120.
Interesting. I’d love to AB test these myself. They deserve more love for these. My Crush35 was the amp that got me back into electric.
The super crush sounds better in every way except for one... And that my friends is the doom tone. It's much more Sleep-like on the old crush. These both sound good though. If doom/stoner metal is your thing, keep your old crush, but that aside, I actually thought the super crush performed better for every other flavor.
I don’t think orange really needed to update this amp, but I’m not upset they did.
i love your simple guitar teqniques continue so
Great demo. The Super Crush is definitely a more versatile rock/metal amp being that the tighter low end would cut through a mix much better than the CR120. The clean channel is also brighter and chimier. But if your thing is doom/stoner rock the CR120 has more of that classic Orange looseness, even though you can't go wrong with either.
great vid!!
More similar than different. If I were engineering a session and the guitarist asked me which one I would say "choose either".
Seems the gain adjustment on the Super crush is much more smoother - larger than the crush 120 , The 120 gain makes a huge jump between 4-6 .
Ok so far I like the cr 120 more. I’d have to test them both in person to see how they react to my playing. I have a cr120 pro. I’m not convinced to upgrade yet. Great demo as always.
Honestly doesn't seem like an upgrade from the 120 unless you NEED built-in cab sim. Less wattage, removed plate/hall reverbs.
The Flat EQ is a great Punk Rock tone IMO. I noticed almost zero difference on phone speakers, but with headphones I noticed the CR has a bit more low end on the clean channel, and considerably more low end on the Distorted channel. I like both, but prefer the Super Crush (the can sim kinda sucks though). The cleans blew me away on both amps.
My prefer CR120. Sounds more round and fat, i like it. Also i like Plate reverb, Super 100 doesn't have possibility to choose type of reverb.
Phenomenal video.. I actually like them both, it's only a question if one needs more low end from the CR120. I'm leaning more toeards the crispier sound of the Super Crush, but than again, the clean sound of CR120 is just great. The cab sim is the only downside actually.. but the rest of the sounds from both amps are quite good.
Is it me or does it seem that the CR120 has a much steeper gain control? In other words, it seems that the Super Crush has a slighty wider palette of sounds as the knob is turned, it doesn't enter the higher gain stage so quickly as the CR120.
Super crush 100 cuts through band mix with less filtering. Cr120 has a deep percussive bass that the sc100 cant replicate. Cr120 for doom and looser metal riffs. Sc100 for tighter and brighter stuff. Use both for a glorious stereo setup!!!
They’re really close but the Super sounds tighter on the bottom and capable of more brilliance and upper mid crunch
That old "let it die" foo fighters riff is so good!
You really can't go wrong with either one. I'm sticking with my CR120 since it has plate reverb, but that XLR out on the Super Crush keeps grabbing my attention.
I’m not sold man… I have a CR60c so I’m gonna have to A/B the combos to know for sure. But so far, not enough of a difference to justify changing amps. Any difference between them I can pretty much get with an EQ and overdrive. For people getting an Orange or even just a crush series amp for the first time, I can see them picking the Super Crush 100 from a first listen, but I’m not so sure about people who have the previous model already.
@@pinio5132 they are so similar, I wouldn’t ever recommend you get one or the other without comparing them with your own ears. I love my CR60, it’s honestly the best amp I’ve ever played and I won’t swap out until I hear for certain that the new one is superior
That new orange sounds killer
The CR120 sounds a bit better to me but they are both very close. The CR120 is my favorite amp out of all the amps I have played in the last 45 years.
When I bought my Crush Pro 120 I was actually going to buy a Rockerverb and after trying both, I went for the Crush. Now with the Super Crush 100, I still think I prefer my Crush 120. I have been trying to play guitar for about 45 years too (on and off). For me the Crush Pro 120 is the best amp I have played and I have saved a whole lot of money.Which I have used to buy more guitars, you can never have too many guitars.
@@stuartmacdonald5361 Lol.....I find the opposite is true. You can't have too many amps! Everytime a good deal comes along on gumtree I can't resist it
Super Crush kills it. Love that New amp!
Cool riff on Clip 4!
Both sound very good, the new one probably has a less muddy sound. Reverb sounds nice too.
It's a little weird, but the CR120 sounded a bit beefier in the gain stage, and a bit crisper in the clean. I expected the opposite. Or, it could just be my crappy computer speakers. Both AWESOME amps! I wouldn't kick either one out of bed.
CR120 is a bit warmer! But Yeah, both sound awesome!
The difference is almost negligible, I think I’ll hang on to my CR120. In fact, I think it sounds fuller but also less compressed.
Oh nice, Foo Fighters!
Super Crush
Excellent sound detail on all modes.
Needs little or no mix into its track
I think what it all comes down to is the cr120 is more modeled after the mk1 and mk2 where as the super crush has a more modern tight gain like the mk3
I kinda dig the woofy, gumminess of the cr120. I'm not gonna upgrade. I already have a brighter, tighter second amp (and an eq pedal). However, if I were choosing today I'd pick the Super Crush on looks alone.
Very similar but I like the older one, a bit weightier sounding here at least (probably a small eq tweak to either).
CR120 sounds like mud. The clean channel has also been significantly improved.
I want both.🤟💀🔥
Great demo! Not as big as a difference as many seem to be saying to my ear. It would be difficult to pick between them in a blind test if you tried to get them as close as possible.
You might want to compare the Super Crush to the Rockerverb Mkiii, as everyone always wanted to know how the CR120 sounds compared to the Rockerverb. I presume the comparison between the Super Crush and Rockerverb is going to be a popular request in the coming months and years.
Here in the U.K. the Super Crush is marginally more expensive than the CR120, but because of that it is closer to the Rocker 15 price point. If I had the choice I’d go for the Rocker 15 over the Super Crush, so that might be another great comparison video for the future.
The old one sounds nearly identical to a Rockerverb to me. The new one has the same overall character, but a bit less of the low end squishiness under high gain that the CR120 and Rockerverb seem to have. Whether or not that's good or bad is subjective, I guess, but I like amps with a big more of that squishy feel so I still prefer the CR120 over the Super Crush
When using the Cab sim out on the super crush, do you need the output to still be hooked up to a speaker?
I guess the same kind of question for the cr120 from the send, can it go direct to an impulse via audio interface without a speaker?
Or do both still need load boxes etc… like with a valve amp.
My understanding is because it's solid state you don't need a load hooked up when using the cab out. I used it without one, however I'd double-check with Orange 👍
Ty Tabor enough said!
I think the cr 100 has more clearity with gain, and the cr 120 is slighly more muffled/compressed? The cr 120 has 3 reverb options, I wonder why they left this out of the new one. I'm always chasing tone on tube amps, i think it's time to give solid state another chance, these sound great on the video, also they're cheaper, and more reliable than tube amps.
The crush 100 sounds brighter and the cr120 is slightly darker with a bit more fizz in the distortion. But honestly they sound pretty damn close and I'm pretty sure if you messed with the top end of the crush 100 you could probably get it to sound just like the CR 120.
If I had the "fuck-you money" to spend I would get the cr120 for the studio and the crush 100 for touring and live shows. It's pretty damn close.
I’ve always wanted a Rockerverb, but being more of a hobby player I just have never been able to justify the cost or loudness. Will there be any more videos to come on the Super Crush 100? If not what are your general thoughts on it? Love to crank up when I can but bedroom levels are also important to me. Really enjoyed the crush 35rt when I had it and this looks like a nice next purchase to me. Keep up the good work, been watching your demos for years!
Hey, thanks dude. I borrowed the Crush's for the videos so no more videos currently on it. What I will say is I have a Rockerverb Mk1 50 head and I A/B'd it just for myself with the Super Crush and the Crush is really close to it. If I closed my eyes and you told me the Super Crush was a Rockerverb I wouldn't have been surprised 👍
@@TobysGuitarGearDemos appreciate the insight, now to watch that shootout of Orange cabs you have uploaded for the next couple of days 😂
Was that an Every Time I Die riff??
Really hard to say, with my audio, but the SC sound a little brighter, but that could be and audio taper pot difference in the controls, not enough difference to me if you already have the crush pro 120.
I think either amp you can adjust for taste and this dirty secret of adding an equalizer in the effects loop and make either one sound like the other.
So if you already have the pro 120 I personally wouldn't run out and get the new super crush.
Both are just as good.
Independent pre amps one on the clean side and one on the dirty side on the new super crush is cool and could be a plus hard to say
But if didn't have one and was in the market for one I would get the new super crush not just for the sound but for the cab Sim in the new ones would be the bees nees.
You can tweek to taste on either one...
It new and in its honeymoon stage right now ... but the cab Sim is the best selling point in my opinion..
Other than the appalling cab sim this is a fantastic effort from orange.
Boss Katana 100 MK2 vs Orange Super Crush 100 next?
Playing guitar is all about feel. How does it feel in front of a 4x12 cab?
To me the Cleans sounded better on the SC100. Richer, fuller, more depth. The dirty tones were kinda hard to tell apart for me. Both amps sound great and you really can't go wrong with either one.
I think you had the cr120 set to hall reverb which was hard to hear comparison more accurately
That cab Sim out actually doesn't sound bad. I'm used to the absolute dogshit one on my 6505MH.
I want to get an Orange amp. What would you recommend in the sub 1k range? Looking for something to fill the doom/stoner type of amp. Kinda looking at an OR15
OR15 would be great and has that fuzzy Orange doom sound. That's what I'd go for 👍
Super super similar but the super crush just sounded a little more alive for the lack of a better term
Love my CR 120! Just turn it on and go!
The gains sound slightly different, but both are great amps.
I have a Crush Pro 120 that i've been wanting to pair with a cabinet loaded with Eminence Man O War speakers. Man O Wars are pretty trebly, and they have a crunchier midrange than a V30, and because of how midrange focused the CR120 is, i kinda wanted to see if i could get an HM2 in a whole amp kind of sound.
ManOwar + Governor in a 212 or 412 in an x pattern are amazing clean and dirty. I have a 212 loaded with them and it's my favorite speaker combo.
I have a 2x12 with a Governor and a Swamp Thang. It sounds really good with the Micro Dark and Crush Mini. I think I will also give the Super Crush 100 a try.
i don't have a cab, so can i use this amp with the cab sim out plugged into my audio interface?
It's solid state so in theory it doesn't need a cab attached but I would send Orange an e-mail just to check as it does vary amp to amp 👍
Is it just e or do they both sound REALLY NICE??? I can barely tell any difference except the new one is a bit stronger in the mids. I can never tell from videos but they really sound similar.
Sounds like the same same pre-amp with the only differences being potential change in pot tapers, and your typical variance from tolerance of parts. The different power amp could also be affecting it as it is a different design
I've played two 120s side by side that had the same slight difference. These of course can be adjusted for. No two amps are exactly the same.
Sure the tolerance can be small on a per part basis, but an amp is the sum of its parts.
I've been gigging my 120 for years, might pick up the 100 as a back up.
For some reason they still didn't add a mid EQ to the clean channel. Removed plate/hall reverbs? And less wattage...why? Kinda seems like a downgrade. Weird!
20 watts is pretty negligible, a 100 watt amp is only 2x as loud as 10 watts due to the nature of decibels
i do agree a mid control would be nice for the cleans tho
Are these good at low volumes?
Really similar, but what I'm hearing is Dirty: The 120 has a more full bottom end and low mids. Clean: the 120 is more clear and articulate. High Gain: The 100 is clearer and the 120 is a bit more muddy. Considering I never use high gain, the old 120 sounds much better.
In all honesty I can't say one is better than the other. As a few have said, "the SC100 is a little brighter". I wish I could take bits from each of them to make one that beats both of them lol. I won't be buying the new one though. For now I will stick with my Crush Pro 120 combo.
Super crush definitely sounds a little more bright and crisp, cr120 sounds great tho, I'd say if you're on a budget get a used cr120 but I'd take the super crush over it any day
I like both but the super crush is so cool
Can u do another vox pathfinder 10 vs other amp
Is the DI. signal taken before the master volume ? Fine video btw. ;-)
@@TobysGuitarGearDemos Thanks, I always find that weird. For live sound it's much more practical to have it before, so when you adjust the amps volume it doesn't affect the FOH volume. FWIW
COLD AND UGLY
you are the only one that knows how to do I review
by far the best amp review channel on UA-cam !
Love this channel so much
I’ve been saying this for a long time… solid state is where it’s at
what kind of pedals can i use to give the mids a boost like the cr120?
how is the super crush with pedals? I like playing metallica songs, so I need to get distortion that doesn't sound too muddy
Works really well with a Tubescreamer. You can push the bass into the TS and it will naturally shelve the bass while keeping it bassy. It sounds very Rockerverby so if you like that tone you will probably like this 👍
Both great but I'd go for the Crush 100, the CR120 sounds a bit 'boxy' to me.
I think the new one has a little more top end its more articulate to me. The cr120 is all lows and mids and quite dark. The new one had a tight and clearer sound.
This is awesome. I have a Crush 35RT right now and absolutely love it. I've been looking to upgrade, and while I really like my Orange I was thinking about something a little different and was looking at some Fenders but now the Super Crush 100 combo is exactly what I was looking for! I wanted something bigger that was just a little brighter and this is perfect. This is so awesome that Orange went this route. Sounds great for tons of different genres and the clean channel is amazing as well! I'm thinking I'm going to get the Super Crush 100 combo in black just to switch it up because my 35RT is orange! Thanks for posting this.
The Super Crush 100 and CR120 have slightly different tapers on the gain control, I’ve matched them by ear rather than eye - hence why the CR120 is set to slightly less gain visually. Both have more than enough gain for anything you throw at them 👍
Thanks for the comparison, that’s really useful!
Great video! Thank you 🙏
seems like you can not go wrong with either
The cleans on clip 2 were magical... What guitar/pickup did you use?
@@lovecraftmusic8717 Thanks. Guitar is the Fender Vintera Road Worn 50's Strat with "Vintage Style '50s Single Coil Hot Strat pickups". I used the Neck pickup 👍
