Vinnie is in a Flow state here and he is easily able to be at his most creative with a group of players he feels comfortable with. If you've read about FLOW or experienced it you'll know that it is a feeling like nothing else musically. Ideas and technique just flow out effortlessly. The musicians on stage know that Vinnie is going to blow chops at a club gig like this and they welcome it. It's like Mozart at his peak. Just enjoy it for what it is and not try to compare it to a studio session. Having this on video is priceless! Thanks Steve!!!
Perfectly said! I’ve been there too behind the kit. Obviously nowhere near to the level of Vinnie, but in a flow state. I’ve experienced a lot of crazy stuff in my life - many different moments of jubilation, but nothing quite compares to that flow state you talk about. That’s reason enough to put your children, if you have any, behind a musical instrument and encourage them. Just to give them a shot at finding that moment. It’s something so special and so uniquely human. Makes the whole journey worth it. I went almost 20 years without really sitting behind a kit. Recently picked it back up. It’s going to be a long process to get back to where I left off, but the idea of hitting that flow state again keeps me at it. Truly a magical thing.
It's always so great to hear everyone in the crowd screaming in outrage at Vinnie's fills and ideas every couple measures or so, and having so much fun. God bless you, Vinnie, we love you.
It's wild to see video of this now! This take ended up on a set of live albums Jeff released in about 2001 with all kinds of "pick up bands" that Jeff was recording on his standing Baked Potato gigs. Fittingly enough, the albums were called Jeff Richman and Friends Live at the Baked Potato Vol 1 and Vol 2. FANTASTIC live albums with a variety of different bands who would show up unrehearsed to play down charts. I've been listening to this with awe for 20 years and just now found this video!
I've been waiting to see/hear this whole night for years! Thank you so much Steve. For me, Vinnie's playing here is so much more than "cool drum shit." He is so "inside" the music and so involved in what the rest of the band is playing. Its unbelievable
Steve thank you so much for this precious testimony like a diamond ... which shows how Vinnie's talent will never be praised enough ... a testimony for future drummers
Thanks so much for this. Great to hear Vinnie with the gloves off. Tav sounds awesome as well. Vinnie and Abe lockin’ in! I feel kinda sorry for people who can’t connect with this. Can’t imagine how you wouldn’t want to be front and center for this.
yeah!! you know it's gonna be a good day when you wake up to see new Vinnie vids on YT! =) Thanks very much, Steve for this! Really worth the wait.. =)
Kamaroon! I've had the audio from this performance for years. I can't remember where I got, although I'm assuming now it was from HouseofDrumming.com. Thank you so much for finally posting the video. Back in the early days of the internet we had to get lucky and find a random audio clip like this of Vinnie, and dissect it for years and hope to get something more than amazement from it. UA-cam has come a long way.
I love how around minute 7, Vin completely playes thru the 1....not for a couple bars but like for 20! He has such great time feel and its so cool to see the bass player barley hanging on!! He was bopping his head in quarters most of the song but when Vin starts going over the bars, bar after bar after bar he just loses it and goes straight to 16ths! I think he got lost a couple min in and bailed himself out when Vin looked back at the chart....Amazing to see how Vin can sight read back to the head when going off planet like that...They must of had some good visual cues from the leader....Monsters here!! all of them!!!
Took me a few minutes to be absolutely sure, but this is the version from the album. Live at the Baked Potato volume 2, I believe. Unfortunately, it’s more of a compilation album, so it’s the only track Vinnie features on. Still, it’s him in total flow state. Truly impressive.
Surely, in generations to come we'll define Vinnie's playing in eras, identifiable by his haircuts. This is definitely his Sting period, or towards the end of it. His best technically and artistically in which he happened to have short hair while playing for Sting.
Let us stop a minute and realize Vinnie is READING some of this tune / form / kicks around the solos. WTF. no one can make it sound this good & READ....whoooosh.
You could actually play a simple 12/8 groove straight thru the entire tune- it's not a hard song- but Vinnie taking it to dizzying heights makes it sound crazy hard
Do NOT trivialize this because it's in 12/8....The modulation to 1/2 note triplet time makes it difficult for most drummers to make that transition, blow in it and come back to 12/8. @@drummadave
Any time Vinnie isn't asleep he's doing something percussive from what I've seen and understand. When a drummers magazine columnist arrived at Vinnie's house late one evening to do an interview with him, he remarked that Vinnie had a practice pad and sticks for him to use while he and Vinnie both practiced as they talked.
Thats Abe Laboriel Sr on bass. He's not agitated, him and Vinnie have played together for ages, I was in the audience at one of these gigs on this video, theyre good friends
Colaiuta, amazing drummer,we all know this. But honestly, its very annoying to listen to any solo when the drummer is soloing on top 24/7. Sometimes Vinnie should just support a song and control his ADD. His fills are awesome and his time stretching is second to none, but enough is enough. He is really getting in the way here.
Sasu Poutanen Well everyone is entitled to their opinion. Band seemed to be getting off, the crowd was super pumped... Vinnie should have just held back. Not so sure the hungry crowd would’ve dug THAT! 🤦♂️👍🏻
Vinnie is a busy drummer. Pretty sure the other top class musicians appreciate it. He’s capable of holding back too. Just not sure that’s what the song calls for and what the musicians/crowd wanted. I’m pretty sure the musicians are there to support him and give him something to feed off. And I’m pretty sure the crowd is mostly there for him. Mike Landau is fucking awesome, but doesn’t carry near the weight that Vinnie does when it comes to name recognition. He’s a very different breed of drummer. He can get away with, nay, he is often encouraged to do it. That’s kinda how it goes when you’re in that league. They all go with it. Maybe you should too. It doesn’t happen very often, so just try to enjoy it.
Vinnie didnt get hired for this gig to be generic and average. Its obvious that he hired because he can stretch out with the soloist amongst other things.
Nope...it was time to shine....that's why Richman hired him---to be himself---most record dates would not allow that freedom, so WE ARE fortunate to see this.

Thanks for the post. In spite of Vinnie's feelings about candid video, this one belongs to the world as a testament to his extraordinary talent.
yeah aww poor vinnie

Steve Holmes comes thru with yet another diamond video. Thank you Steve, sincerely, for your contributions to the drumming community
The perfect fills that nobody else would even think to play seemingly so effortless.
We’re still a good few weeks from Christmas 🎄...but we shall gladly accept this now 😁 Thanks, Steve! 👊🏽💥
Or Easter present. There’s an Easter egg every bar.

Reminds me of why I listened to Vinnie so often for so many years. He shapes the music, brings out the best in everyone.
Dear GOD, how I love to watch his left hand. AMAZING technical prowess, supporting such excellence in musicianship.
No words !!!!! He is still getting better and better this guy!!! Pure inspiration!!
......Again, thanks for these "MUST HAVE" Vinnie clips!

Vinnie is the man🏆🎶🥁❤️
Pure balladry on the drum set..

S.P. - this is a club gig. Vinnie tends to fool around more because of the casual nature of the situation.
Vinnie didnt get hired for this gig to be generic and average. Its obvious that he hired because he can stretch out with the soloist amongst other things.
Love Vinnie but way way too busy man.
