I worked in french bakeries for 50 yrs, and owned one.
This is how we did it.
Nice.
Short crust??
you mean you bought dough in a supermarket? lol
I served this with homemade vanilla ice cream. Donal, this recipe made all my guests go silent for solid few minutes (not too long, they were finished with it quite quickly). I don’t like praising my own work in front of others, but this time I had to make an exception. The taste was mind-blowing! You, again, made it into my ‘recipe book’. 👏🏻
Tomas Mihok bravo!
Sounds soooo delicious! I love recipes like this too - where everyone goes silent!
Wow! Finally one baker who showed how he turned upside down the cake! Very nice result! Bravooooo!!!
My first time making this dish and I used this recipe, really easy to follow. I did stupidly mess the toffee up first time by being impatient and adding butter and stirring too early, learnt my lesson there. The calvados and the spices are tremendous and make the dish really special. Also, note to self, remember the pan is hot for some time after coming out of the oven, don't grab the bloody handle!!
Hi Donal I'm French and omg this looks so yummy thanks for sharing your version of "la tarte tatin" with us ! Bisous xx.
I grew up seeing your videos , and I’ve never seen any chef that is generous as you in plating . Love from Saudi Arabia .
I’ll be making this tarts tatin as soon as possible. I Love them. 😊♥️🍏♥️🍎♥️🥮♥️😊
That the best tarte tatin iv seen on UA-cam 🇦🇺👍
Well done. It's really good served with crème fraîche. For a thicker tarte tatin I usually cut my apples in half and stuff more apple in there.
O my God! I did it today...in 10 min tart disappeared from the plate...It was so delicious and easy made following recommendation. Donal you are the best, thanks.
Donal, as soon as I saw your video I made the tarte!!! My husband and my two girls just loved it!!! It was delicious!!! Love you from Greece!!! 💖💖💖
I am using this video for a french assignment. thanks! it helped a lot!
I made this last night it was excellent ! So fragrant , so easy ! Thank you :)
I was studying for my statistics exam when I saw the video. Such a nice treat for a short break!

omg this is the best, easiest, most spectacular recipe ever! i m in love❤️ if i can do it, anyone can and indeed, just looking at it brings you so much joy, not to mention is deliciousssss
Just made this for thanksgiving. I made two mini ones tonight to make sure it tasted ok for my family. It’s soooo delicious and amazing! And I hardly know how to cook! I used a Spanish sweet raisin sherry instead since that’s what I had. What a fun thing to make. Thanks so much for this Donal. Food is love❤️
This is a good recipe , I like your explanation clear and right to the point. Today I made it, just turn out wonderful. Thank you so much Donal 😊🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎🍎
Yummm warm with nice vanilla ice cream on the side!!! I love how perfectly it comes out your apple!
deliciously good . i will try this
I have always wanted to try Tarte Tatin too and your recipe looked delicious but I didn't have any Calvados or puff pastry but I made a rich shortcrust and your recipe for the apples is wonderful, I will always make it like this in future. I'll try puff pastry next time and Calvados. Mind you when I researched it I found a young woman born in northern France who used short crust so not sure which is authentic but what the heck hubby and I loved it. I can only improve on it now, thank you Donal. Will look at what else you make as only found you because of the Tarte Tatin.
Great recipe and easy! I really like the tip for not stirring the sugar so that it carmelizes properly. Thank you!
Nice Tarte Tatin recipe! I like the addition of Star Anise, Calvados and Cinnamon. I don’t make it much for myself either but then again I don’t know who better deserves it than me, lol. 👍
Such a positive and happy guy! I will definitely make this tart
Delicious and very well done! Thanks for this recipe my family loved it!
am just like you! i feel happy when my baking or cooking turns out so good!
Trying this tomorrow. Could I prep before hand and refrigerate till it needs cooking. 🐶
I am making it this evening! Can’t wait, thank you very much
Fabulous - thanks for this wonderfully easy showstopper of a recipe!
I adore tarte Tatin! Never thought of adding star anise or cinnamon but that's what I'll do next time... and perhaps a grate of nutmeg....!
Amazing dessert ! I do it with sweet shortcrust pastry. I'm Norman and I hadn't even thought to put Calvados in the caramel. I'll try tomorrow :)
Looks gorgeous will be trying this tonight
This looks so gorgeous yet so simple! I'm gonna have to attempt this for sure!
Try to flambé it with Cognac, then dust it around the edge with powdered sugar
SO WELL DONE THANKS JOHN
I always turn arrogant the apples in the caramel for a while then cover with the pastry
This is a very easy way. I still use Jaques Pepin recipe because I like my base to be more of a cookie taste and really hold up the apples. TART TATIN the battle cry of winter.
FANTASTIC RECIPE!!!!!!!!! BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!
Great video it helped me, i made it for the first time, and it came out great. Aded a litle of armagnac.
One of my favorite deserts now!
Remember, the original Tart Tatin was dropped on the floor or provincial kitchen and still survived to conquer the world. Such is the power of French cuisine.
Toot de la fruit! Thanks I didn’t know it was that easy to make.
Delicious! Donal I love your recipies and I'm a big fan of yours . I watched grandma's boy on fox traveller and now I watch follow Donal on Fox Life. I even watch repeat telecast and I have tried most of your chicken recipies. LOVE FROM INDIA!!!
This looks yummy! Thank you Donal!!!
I wonder how long it'll last after i bring it to the table, maybe 1/2 a minute, or even 1/2 a second..
This looks amazing, i just ate and im hungry now
I love this recipe because I love apples 🍎🍎

This looks so wonderful. One question, can this be served cold?
You make it look so easy!!
Amazing Donal! Thank you so much.
And this is how i love it, no ice cream, just the tarte.
I love making this dish - it is always so elegant looking on the table :) I love your addition of the star anise, nice touch!
Don't like apple, but this looks really good. I'm willing to give it a try.
Can’t wait to try this!
Yummy, thanks for the recipe
The Apple tarte tatin looks amazing.im going to try doing this next. Your previous orange chicken turned good when I tried it 😃 it was easy to make 😀
Do you have a written list of the ingredients with measurements please? That would be very helpful!!!
You make it look so easy.

Beautiful tart tatin. 🍏🍎🍏
That tarte looks amazing
This looks so beautiful and delicious!
Great recipe
I believe you on the 'best' part because you made them!!
Is there any way you could make this ahead if you have guests? Or would you just make after the main course?
This video made me so happy!
Ugh thank you, I’ve been trying over and over to make this but I kept messing up on the sugar.
Lower heat more movement for more even caramelization
He is the sort of person who would have a young boy feel to him even at 100
I am seriously considering buying an ovenproof pan for the sole purpose of making tarte tatin
’One fell movement…one fell swoop’. ‘Fell’ is an old word, no longer used, meaning ‘evil’. Macduff compares Macbeth to a vulture, killing all at once his wife and children, his ‘nestlings’, ‘at one fell swoop’. Macbeth 4.3.219
Beautiful 👍 it’s really looks yummy I need to try it !
Made this today, tasted great! The recipe on the website says to use 1/2 lemon but it has not been mentioned in the method or the video, any reason behind this? Was very confused!
The lemon was only used to stop the apples turning brown 0:47
I love ur deserts recipes
oh yes, definitely gonna make this! I have a question though. Which kind of crust is used in the original tart tatine recipe?
I thought you had an interesting question so I had to pull out my old book from culinary school (Le Cordon Bleu just so you know it's reputable lol) - to see what was listed in their recipe. The book gives a choice of puff pastry, pie dough or pate brisee (short crust). Since there was still a choice, I googled and it seems that the pie crust would probably have been used first although I found articles saying either or both. I can tell you from experience though that although they are both delicious, the puff pastry works better if you're serving it right away because it gets soggy as it cools - it's also very rich with the apples and such while the short crust holds up better to the moisture and provides a nice contrast to the sweetness of the apples so they both have advantages. Sorry my reply is so long....I really am a bit of a nerd when it comes to food lol.
bestbitesforever 💜 oh, thank you for a long answer :) usually i am a baking nerd myself, so it will be very useful for me;)
It looks good Donal 😍
I will try it !!!!!❤
That indeed looks delicious
Donal, I love love love your videos! The colour grading is always soothing to the eye. Apart from the delicious food, obviously. :-D Your are one of my idols!
It looks great! Just why you inverted it to this horrible aluminum thing? I am gonna make your recipe for our holidays. Thank you!
yummy! will try that too!
If you watch Masterchef Season 10, you know you're supposed to HALVE them not QUARTER them lol
Lovely kitchen.
Looks delicious
What's the best type of apple for this? I usually use granny smiths- would pink lady or cox's be better?
Looks like a great recipe - could you tell me where you purchased those lovely white plates or the name on the plate - cheers from Canada
Brilliant! from Sydney Australia.
good, but that caramel is too loose, gotta take it further and remove more moisture from apples before baking
that looks so tasty
The sauce reminds me of the Crêpes Suzette one...
This is the best looking tarte tatin on UA-cam!
Amazing recipe Donal!
I have a question, would it be possible in any way to make this a day before? And then somehow serve it hot the next day. I would truly appreciate any tips 😁
Jatin Jadhwani you can put it in the fridge, and then the next day heat it up in the oven for a short period of time on a fairly low temp.
Guido Anselmi okay thanks! :D
Aaina🛡 hoti hai ye zindagi mere dost, ❤.....
Tu muskura😊, vo bhi muskura degi
What's the point of adding lemon flavor unnecessarily since I'm about to cook the apples (who cares if they brown, in other words)? :)
The additional acidity balances the sweetness of the caramel very nicely.
Здорово , молодец парнишка вкусно и душевно
Looks so yummy
Yum, it's on my to do list!
Lovely - will do it! Thx!
it is the best, thank you.
