Good video, can't beat John Deere. I will say though, that in my many years of working in the field, Baldwin brand is by far and large the most common filter on commercial engines.

4:05 not necessarily true. The depth and height of the filter media also affects filtering surface area. Not just pleat # alone.

I prefer to go with the OEM oil filters. I discovered with my Ford 6.0 diesel, that only the Motorcraft filter has the correct valve setup.

Also, the non oem filters for the 6.0 are not as long as the oem filters and do not fit and seal in the canister like them oem is meant to do.

There are many cases in which filters from the major brands are available that are very much of an upgrade from OEM. The latest John Deere fuel filters I have received are printed 'Made in China'! I suppose you would recommend those over a U.S. made Wix or Baldwin! 😂
I would always suggest using the OEM filters since they are specifically designed and engineered a certain way for the machine they are intended to be used on. Even though something may be made overseas does not mean the quality is any less. I would bet you have many things in your possession that were made overseas. @@WesternEquipment The in line filters used to be made in Israel. The point is not overseas vs. domestic but China vs. anywhere else! And if I choose not to support inferior Communist made products, that is my right!

Great video, thanks for posting. The media height looks taller with the Baldwin, that would increase the filter media square inches and probably approach what the OE filter has. Can you give the height? Also can you give a micron rating for each?

Would like to see a comparison of Deere filters . In particular the old ones vs the new quick change oil filter . It seems many Deere owners are removing the new expensive new oil filters and using a conversion kit so they can use the old oil filters which cost much less .

Do all these filters fit same tractor and or same motor and or are these actually motor oil filters..........
1:30 the spring is also more importantly part of the oil bypass so when the filter is completely blocked the oil pump can force that spring back and bypass the oil around the filter media and keep things going. Dirty oil is better then no oil.
This is true in the instance that the spring will allow enough give so that the oil can go back through the seal, which is also called an anti-drain back seal, when pressure is too high or the filter becomes clogged. But it's main function is to keep pressure on the filter itself to keep the filter against the seal and to keep the filter in place. Good point and thanks for watching!
I was told by old time mechanic to use Baldwin oil and fuel filters in my dodge diesel truck, so far have had good service, I think I will stay with them,
In my 2005 model when you change oil filter by the time you start it up then shut it down to check the oil level the oil is already black,
Don't fix something if it's not broke, can't argue with that.
Number of pleats is really apples vs oranges, overall area and property of filter media is what should be compared

Microns Baldwin 5 each
I thought the spring was there to allow oil to bypass the filter element when it was like 'honey'. Cold winter oil won't go through the pleats of the filter very well and will push up against the spring allowing oil to temporarily flow past the filter element rather than through it. The Deere filter doesn't allow for that. I'd rather have a bit of unfiltered oil in the engine than none at all. Once the oil warms, the spring pushed the bypass closed and the filter does it's job. The spring is small because it doesn't do anything. If I'm wrong, I apologize as I don't want to bash an otherwise well thought out filter.

A filter's job is to filter particulate, at an acceptable oil flow rate. You did not mention anything objective or data driven that supports which filter does the best. Subjective or terms terms like bigger, smaller, better were used throughout the video. You made reference to the the number of holes on the nut-plate, my guess is that any of those would more than flow the necessary oil for the application.... the filter media is going to be the limiting factor.
On the plus side, videography was excellent, loved the clean, organized workstation and the commentary was well thought out.

I would like to see a comparison of the John Deere branded oil filters compared to the engine manufactures branded filters ( Briggs & Stratton and Kawasaki). I have an S120 with only 2 hrs. so far. When it's time for the first oil change I will be changing my mower over to a traditional oil change setup. I know oil is going to breakdown from normal use due to heat, oil pressure & dirt no matter how good the oil filter is.

6:30 if you really want to know if the holes are a restriction, measure the surface area of the small hole and multiply that by the number of them vs the surface area of the large hole. If it’s the same then more holes doesn’t matter. Your only gonna move oil as fast as the smallest passage will allow.

they are good filters & cost much less , never a problem with them !!
# of pleats don't matter nearly as much as the overall surface area of the filtration material..:
Cut the cans, stretch the filtration media to length and then measure as to which filter contains the most media, overall.
I was thinking the same thing. He mentioned surface area, but actually did nothing to measure the surface area. I have seen many videos that taken them apart and even though some have fewer pleats they tend to have more surface area. If thats the case here, then his whole push for which is better would be out the window.

Exactly. A smaller center tube will result in more media surface area, even if less pleats than a filter with a larger center tube.
Fun fact wix makes Napa’s filters so they are the same. They have the same part numbers minus 1 or 2 numbers.

Hey what size car oil filter would I use for a lt160
Well the John Deere part number for your filter is AM125424 so you could use that number to cross it to a car filter. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

I change heavy equipment filters all day long and i can tell you jd factory filters are the hardest filters to get off. Baldwins rarely get stuck even at 1000hrs. Jd filter almost bond to the threads after even 500hrs. Complete p.i.t.a.

John Deere is pretty vague when mentioning specifics on part manufacturing. I can say that all of these filters are engineered by John Deere to meet their high standards. As far as where the filters are actually assembled, i do not have an answer on that one. Thanks for watching!

I saw quite a few Deere and Cat filters being made at the Baldwin factory in Nebraska..
Fleetguard, Cummins Filtration
JD filters are made in Mexico. I run Baldwin on my 5075E. Baldwin and Hastings are the same dilter other than the paint and logo. They used to be, and may still be the same filter as an AMSOIL filter other than the AMSOIL uses synthetic media, where Baldwin/Hadtings do not.
I know John Deere doesn't manufacture oil filters. Why didn't you compare a fleetguard filter?
I only had these select few at the time, but maybe I can compare a fleetguard in the future.

The John Deere filters for the 100 series has only 8 drain holes. These filters you are talking about are for the big John Deeres..
Yes, these are for the larger tractor.
Well all the visual comparison review is interesting. But without bench flow test it's all a guessing game. On the pleat spacing is concerned, they will be moving around as the oil is forced thru them.
A person has to understand IF the non Deere filters are so bad. Those brands would had been Sued thus making the product not worth producing.

Pretty sure its Donaldson. Last JD filters I bought had the Donaldson logo on them very small, like how the wix parent co logo is on the Napa gold filters.

I had to take one of these Mexican made filters back...went to put it on (2 days after purchase) and noticed rust formed on the baseplate. The partsman put it back on the shelf and handed me a different one. I just asked for my money back.

This video just shows rhe Wix/Napa filter is better by a lot than the Deere filter. Same flow and filtering power in smaller size

@@WesternEquipment Not confusing at all, John Deere sells the public that being "John Deere" it's a premium product that you need to buy from them, when in fact Deere puts their "premium " filter out on bids , because they have no factory, and whoever gets into their price range gets the deal. So why would you compare a Deere filter to anyone, it's possible the filters you're comparing are the same companies that made Deeres
