The easy job that took forever is finally done on this 2020 Toyota RAV4 XSE hybrid

  • We finally have all the parts for the 2020 Toyota RAV4 XSE hybrid, so it is time to get it all put back together and get it back on the road. There were a lot of sensors that had to be programmed and calibrated so always make sure you figure that into the cost of the build if you don't have the scan tools to do it. All of the trouble codes disappeared after it was back together and programmed. the passenger seat did need to be recalibrated, that is what was causing the airbag light. It is pretty common for any Toyota that gets hit in the back end.

Don't be afraid of the hybrid battery. We've got a 2004 Prius in the family with around 130k miles and the original battery. About once a year the battery needs a cell changed. Could do it in the garage but I take it to a guy across town who does it for a couple hundred bucks. It's stupid reliable, costs very little to maintain and consistently returns 40+ mpg. I'm a muscle car guy at heart, but a dead-nuts reliable and cheap little commuter car that attracts no attention from anyone doesn't suck sometimes.

130k miles is nothing though, especially on an 04. Wait until you actually get into some high miles.

40+ mpg is laughable. I had a 1990 Geo Metro that regularly got 48mpg. 30+ years later 40mpg is the best they can do with all the technological advancements they've made with the ICE? Makes no sense.

My dad had a 2007 Highlander Hybrid and only got rid of it last year. He put close to 300k miles on it, and the final blow was the transmission conked out on it. Hybrid system had no issues through it all.

Can you imagine this vehicle with all the plastic and snaps and zippers being assembled in front of the builders at a 1955 Rolls Royce assembly plant?
Rolls used lead, sheet steel, probably hand-hammered in many places, Burled Mahogany hand-rubbed and formed in their master cabinet maker's plant, and the paint flowed on with a mopbrush and later hand sanded to a shine.
I think they'd either gag and barf or faint in amazement.

I was so hoping this was my rav4. I lost my 2020 rav4 hybrid xse a few months ago in some freak accident. You know driving a hybrid doesn't make you slower, the hybrid version has a lot more power then the standard! That rav4 took me offroad all over the west side of the states, we did some major BLM\dispersed camping. The good thing about a hybrid there are no belts AC, alternator, water pump. Its all electric so you can keep the car on for a week and provide power and use very little gas. We had a 1000w inverter dual battery system installed in mine. I put the rear seats down, unrolled a mattress and slept in the car some nights under the stars with the panoramic roof and AC on. Amazing car.

The hybrid battery will typically last 7 to 10 years if you take care of it. I drive a 2015 Prius C that I originally bought new to deliver pizza. It did that for 100k miles and now has 131k miles on it. It has always lived in Florida, so in a hot climate. The traction battery is original, but the 12V battery ($250 from the dealer, I did the install) was changed around the 115k mile (6 year) mark. The battery cooling fan is cleaned every 15k miles and the car is never run without the A/C on at temperatures over 85F. Above that and the ambient air cannot cool the battery, so it needs the A/C to cool it. I have known people with 250k miles on a Prius that still had their original batteries with no issues. Do I expect an issue some day? Sure, but it's not that expensive to replace it when compared to the savings in operating costs. The original brakes were changed a month ago at 130k miles since they were getting low. This, in a vehicle that was driven VERY hard doing short haul deliveries for most of it's life (fastest driver in the store!). It is not uncommon for the brakes to go 250-300k miles in a Prius so long as it is not stopped short all the time. While I do not drive at a low speed, I do try to stretch my braking events and can take 1/2 a mile to stop at a light, with an initial heavy pulse down below 43mph to shut off the engine (if no one is behind me) and then dragging the regen and hoping the light turns green before I come to it. This lets me get 47 MPG city in Florida when it's 92 F out with 85% humidity and the A/C set to 74F. In the winter, it gets 50+ MPG with the A/C on 72F. If I drove slower, it would do better, but that would be very antisocial behavior in an area with the heavy traffic I drive in. It's not quick, but it is much faster than the 1991 Geo Metro it replaced.
Failures so far at 131,000 miles (211,290KM): Touch screen digitizer ($15), brake pedal pad ($20), 12V Battery ($250), A/C compressor (it was free under warranty, $2000 otherwise), Front Brake pads ($15). I have also done a trans fluid change using Toyota WS fluid ($100) and 4 spark plugs ($20). All labor except for the warranty covered compressor is my own.

Yes, but what's the resale in 10 years time? Holding their value is a big part of Toyotas appeal.
Was watching Rich talk about his Tesla and he said he went through tyres faster due to the car being heavier, and in his case some other expensive part seemed to need replacing on a regular basis, (can't recall of the top of my head).

    • @BakingThePoundcake
      @BakingThePoundcake 2 роки тому

@@Cheepchipsable Its kinda hard to say with this crazy used car market, but I bought mine for $34k and used ones with 60K miles are ~$35k. Non hybrids seem to go for ~33k new, and are ~$30k used with 60K miles. Seems like the hybrid wins by a nose with my quick search.

@@Cheepchipsable And I have a Tesla as well and you'll go through tires because the torque is addictive. Especially in Rich's RWD model its on the verge of spinning the tires at all times. I believe he was replacing axles, also from the torque IIRC. Different part is used on newer Tesla's.

      Could simply be company policy.
It's still about economics if they balance up the cost of renting a similar vehicle for the client vs just writing the vehicle off. Even if it was one crucial part on infinite back order.
Really just means they could get more for the vehicle at auction.

IDK, Scott... There's more than just the amount of miles you drive that should be a deciding factor in whether you buy one of these. Mining the rare earth metals to make those batteries is another factor. I suppose that once it's done, we do the world a service by doing everything we can to make these things last as long as possible; but, I simply don't understand the push to make everything electric when so much more damage is done to mine the resources than will EVER be recouped by fuel use reduction.

One has NiMh and one has lithium battery. I totally agree with you against wholesale EV mandates. EVs were used indoors and around areas with high foot traffic. Mostly for service carts. I don't understand why people want to be handicapped driving a pure EV. This is a hybrid and if I'm honest, Toyota should be ashamed for making vehicles with so many parts...

Excellent video! I work at TMMC and build the bumpers for the RAV4 so I was especially looking forward to the rebuild. I was waiting for some mistake but your knowledge of the vehicle and attention to detail are impressive. Great job!

Can you explain why TMMC did such a poor job on the wax application?

@@FilmScape4K We don't apply wax to the vehicle at the factory, that would have been the dealership

As always, Scott, another great video. I'm even older than you. In my day, all cars took 10W30. The only choice was mineral oil or oil with detergents.

I'm no financial wizard, but if you have so many people lined up to buy your top notch rebuilds, perhaps you should bump up your prices a bit more?
The discriminating buyer will gladly pay a premium for your services.

Thanks for another great series. Lots of channels on UA-cam are more entertainment than knowledge. Your knowledge IS entertaining to watch, so thanks for providing enjoyable and educational content.
