This game holds up so well 2 decades later. Gameplay is very addicting. It's been awhile since a game made my thumb hurt

Moving all the specials to Up+Down has been something I've done since we were able to change them in THPS2, and it's honestly the best thing you can do for yourself. The same reason you explained missing a special grind and going into a manual, I also do for going from a "No Comply" or "Boneless" to a special from vert or ground. It basically allows me to spam the "up" button and once in the air, I can hit "down", followed by either circle or square to initiate my special.
Another slight "pro tip" that I think is mentioned in this game, is that every time you do a trick, the value of that trick goes down (excluding free skate). So if a flip trick is worth 300pts, the next time you do it it'll be worth 150pt (can't remember the divider off the top of my head), and then 75pt, etc, until it's worth like 10pts. So when trying to hit a huge combo, don't keep doing the same grinds and flip tricks. Switch it up and try to use everything you can; kickflip, heelflip, pop shove-its, hard flips, impossibles, etc.

The tip with having your special grind controls be ⬆️⬇️🔼 or ⬇️⬆️🔼 to save your combo to continue on in a manual if you miss the grind is such a great tip thanks man !

Also another advance tip that the game doesn't tell you about, you can quickly turn your character around in the opposite direction by double tapping ⬇️⬇️down then pressing the R1 trigger on Playstation.

Also add 'quick U turn' for the beginners. Instead of holding left/right to go back, you can press left/right + down , R2. Doing a switch while turning makes it faster.
And lastly the 'quick turn', by double tapping down together with the shoulder button.

Wow!!Thank you so much! I was literally just telling my 23 year old son that I have been really enjoying playing Tony Hawk again but I hate how if I get to close to the edge of a ramp I fall on my face without a way to stand up! I changed my specials to up down added spins to my grinds and added the boneless to my practice as well. My hand and fingers are aching today but I am now working my way through Downhill Jam. Thanks again for doing this video. I appreciate it.

Using up-down inputs versus left or right inputs to ensure a manual when you miss the rail is one I haven't heard before. With about 300hrs into this so far (plus the originals in the early 00's), I'm glad I knew all of the other tips, but it's all solid advice for people wanting to really beat this game's ass-which is really hard to do. Solid advice 👍
➤ Quick Note: A Boneless is a No Comply when in switch-just one of those skater things. Before I got older and out of shape I used to skate, haha!
Using the Boneless or No Comply is also a great way to reach higher areas with a low level character like the rooftop gaps in "Downtown", which a lot of newer players struggle with (I know I did in the old PlayStation days).

This is sort of a combo of two of his tips: use transfer button/RT/R2 off of verts that are grindable on top. That way you can do a 900 or a crazy spinning grab trick then just start grinding. And you don’t have to worry about coming in straight on the landing because you can always grind. This is the best way to start a combo for me, pop off a 900 to kick things off then just start grinding

Did you know that you can 'dismount' from a grind using the triggers? So if you're grinding vert coping you can drop straight into the vert (and follow up with a revert) without having to overbalance into it. You can also use this if (for example) you're grinding the edge of a tall building you're trying to get onto. Simply use the trigger to exit the grind on the rooftop side and roll away without having to ollie out.

Couple tips, one being an addition to your up down special grind. Have two special manuals as well, also utilizing up down. That way if you don't hit your special grind, you'll still hit a special manual. More points is always good. Then, with the R2, on PS4, on top of doing transferring it also puts you up on the coping of the ramp/bowl...so if you hit triangle, on PS4, to grind, you will go into a grind instead of just landing on top of the ramp or transferring to the other side and having to land your trick. It adds a nice initial boost of score for whatever longer combo you want to do. Finally, if you're still struggling to get the 10m point run for the achievement, go to Roswell. Go in the room with the pool. You'll notice there is a gap you can constantly get going over the open section as well as another gap multiplier. Do some tricks with the bowl using reverts and manuals and then use the R2 grind technique I stated above...once you figure out where the multipliers come in, you can go around, grab the multiplier, wallplant and do a trick back into grind and come back and get the extra 2 multipliers and wallplant back around. Pretty simple and easy 3m+ combo even without max stats. Do it 3 times making sure to utilize a plethora of different tricks and you'll get it no problem.

I had to comment and let you know that our brains developed the same strategy in regards to how you hold your controller. I religiously played the THPS games growing up, and my friends would make fun of the goofy way I held the controller. Thought they were hilarious, they did.
I also held the N64 controller in a weird way that I didn't see others do. I'd use my thumb and index finger to work the single analog stick instead of using only my thumb. What I'm trying to say is that you're not alone. There are more of us.

You should talk about the 180 spins on ground that makes you turn instantly, also about wallie plants that launches you up and maybe a reminder that if your special meter is full you go faster (and also if you're not on switch unless you fully upgrade it).

I'm an old veteran of the series as well, and use my index finger for grinding too. Lots of other people do it as well.

if it really plays like underground 1&2 than wallrides are amazing. you could use them as extensions, do tricks out of them, and use them to move around and do some tricks in some more unique ways.

What are your thoughts on using the left joystick vs. the D pad? I noticed there are different tricks available for diagonal directions on the joystick that (I don’t think?) you can do with the D pad, but I find the D pad much easier to use.

I'd suggest holding L1 or R1 while anytime your line allows a wallplant, or if you're grinding and want to do a flip trick into another grind. 180s and 360s add more to your multiplier

After a shitty combo you can always Olli into a manual and then do reverts (revert, balance, revert etc. ...) while doing the manual to multiply your score points. If you get it done after an outstanding combo, it really pays off.
