Herlong airport, did my private there about a year ago , that’s crazy man love the plane , currently working on my commercial at cecil airport right next to it
I like doing some long flights with no flight following also. It is more peaceful. I only do it on one flight I make from Georgia to Ohio and there is really no major airspace that I get near anyway. Plus I have two different traffic systems (three if you count my Mk-II eyeballs) so I feel I’m still very safe even without flight following. Of course in busy airspace I’m always flight following or often IFR.
Hey, Mike the others are correct regarding the mic spacing. All aviation headsets are designed to only open the noise-gate if the mic is right on your lips. I have the A20’s and the Zulu 3’s and I always have the mic foam windscreen touching my lips. You voice is fairly low also and the Bose headset does not have as good of bass response as the Zulu’s, so you may have to talk even louder to make up for the lower sensitivity to bass in the Bose’s
Thought. Tower not recognizing call sign could be your not using flight following, thus your not “in the system” so he is looking all over his screen for you. Notice he asked you about how many souls on board. Nice job on building your plane and your channel.
Hey Mike if you ever want a safety pilot on a trip, hit me up! (CFII/ATP) If I’m not working I’ll meet you wherever. I’d love to see your machine in person! Also it’s hard to tell if you’re using flight following from the audio the way it was cut. I HIGHLY recommend you do utilize it for your cross countries, if you’re not already. ATC will help alert you to any potential issues (traffic / weather) you may not be aware of. Most times they will even coordinate a transition through a D or C airspace for you. Of course it’s not their job to do so, so you don’t want to become over reliant/ complacent. Anyways I hope i don’t seem overly critical; just looking out for you! Love watching your videos! 🤙

Hey Mike, Just a private pilot here Always appreciate your video and sharing. You're doing an amazing job. Your plane is a blast. Not here to troll or whatever but if I could/might possibly say something, you might want to consider flight following and opening/closing a flight plan. I also fly out of LZU and I also have comms issues unless I'm inside 10 miles from the airport. Maybe it's interference from Stone Mountain. The controllers there can also get a little salty.... I think one of them has a pre-recorded response and it goes something like this, "Just keep it in tight for me". I've been tempted to say "nah, I'm going to do a giant 360 out here off the end of runway 7 at about 2,000 feet, you good with that?" but I have just kept my mouth shut and flown the plane. For sure, those controllers have a difficult job with all the jet and twin traffic coming into LZU while also managing us GA pilots out there just puttering around.
Hey bro thats beautiful cruise flight. But coming in to that touch down zone was absolutely awful and quite dangerous. More rudder dancing and stick micro adjustments. Do what you need to do to stay on center line in landing all the time. Keep that pressure on the right rudder at touch down point as well and stay on it
You mentioned the tower doesn't hear you. Can you adjust the MIC gain? I suggest you get someone to listen to your radio on the ground before making any changes. You can also check LIVEATC.com assuming someone is posting traffic from KLZU.

Intentionally flying through @09:20 "broken" cloud layers is never "ok" for VFR pilots, unaccompanied by an IFR rated pilot. This is an easy way to get into inadvertent IMC. Flying above or below the broken deck is acceptable as long as the pilot can still maintain visual reference with the ground.
@@colecotten26 My response was "WTF!!". We are still discussing the Kobe tragedy, and as aviators we must be better with how we state things to avert future IMC triggered events.
@@colecotten26 Even though I prefer to always use flight following, with ADSB (in/out) and flying at 8.5k and 6.5k, I am not going to beat Mike up on that point too hard, because there is risk mitigation tool being used. Most of the time, traffic alerts will appear on the display before flight following gets the chance to notify you. But having flight following as a backup is always beneficial since there is potential to overlook the display, depending on the workload the PIC is dealing with.
@@adroper62 You have a point. I have picked up ADSB traffic well before ATC has alerted me but not everyone has ADSB out or a transponder. Primary radar fills in that gap and will pick up an object even if they don't have a transponder. FF is just not used to traffic alerts tho. If you run into any unforeseen issues along your route, they are there to help you. They already know what type of AC you are, where you are, and where you're going. If something goes wrong, it's much easier to declare that emergency than to scramble to try to get all that information across with guard at 121.5. Not to mention the weather updates and the ease of getting a pop-up IFR clearance if need be. For any XC. I teach all my students to pick up FF for all those reasons, plus it's free.

For any XC. I teach all my students to pick up FF for all those reasons, plus it's free.
bro.i love all of your videos and plane...you have me wanting to become a pilot and have my own aircraft...thanks for your informative videos...also would it be a little helpful to use binoculars to locate runways that's needed?
Amazing video! Congrats!!!
looks like the same model CO monitor that I have
Beautiful plane.
Thank you
Mike I'm new to this channel and it was very intertaining and interesting.
super vol j'ai bien aimé j'aimerais bien faire un voyage avec ce frère car il métrise bien l'appareil.
Question how much rudder do you have> i don't use that much aileron even in an "over recommended" crosswind component?
Mike Great Flight but that mic needs major adjusting ...one could hardly hear you, mate!!
I’m seriously gonna look into that. Appreciate the feedback JR
@@mojogrip check the mic in the boom of your headset as well. Is the mic pointed away from you? Cheap and easy fix maybe.
@@tyler_russell This is a good point to bring up, could be an easy fix. Also make sure the mic is either touching lips or almost touching lips.
Hey Mike, have you considered trying Pilotedge? It’s a good resource that will get you comfortable speaking to ATC
I’m confident in my ability to speak to ATC. Not using flight following was a practice for me.
@@mojogrip Cool, I'm referring more to the ability to speak clear and concise using appropriate phraseology without being nervous to speak when required. I'm an air traffic controller, been in the career field since 1990 so not trying to just make a comment to hate. I like your stuff and was just making a suggestion. Good Luck man!!
@@klc1810 I am too but retired. I’m also a pilot as well. You sensed what I did and you are spot on. I’m going to suggest he make three field trips 1. A level 2 tower for a few hours 2. A RAPCON ( or a TRACON that’s not a really busy one LoL both upstairs and downstairs) 3. Then finally an ARTCC. I think this will help him get a better understanding of the the system and his role in it.
I've rotated out of Herlong before, Right off of Normandy Blvd.
“Wind check”, no call sign needed, no response needed. Save you some time.
Good ride!
Just subscribed.......👏👏👏🇨🇦
Mike great video. Your voice from your headset mike is very faint even when you are not communicating with ATC. Don't know why but thought you should know. Keep up the good work! I am just starting my aviation journey. Ed
oh - you were at HERLONG. We just moved from nearby St Johns to KSUT - Southport NC. MEanwhile I still own 1/4 of a Cherokee 180 that's based there. I finished building my RANS S-19 about the same time as 661MG was finished. I flew it from KCRG (Craig in JAX) to KSUT a few weeks ago. Is'nt the autopilot great? My understanding is you have a TURBO Rotax.
Mike, how come you speak well on camera, but whisper on the mic? The tower was even unable to hear you. Your voice should sound the same all the time. Do you notice how clear the other pilots sound on the radio.
The mic should be either touching your lips or like 1mm from touching your lips. I always have my bose mic just touching my lips when flying.
@@camerongoodwin2020, I was always told you should be able to kiss the microphone. That's how close it should be.
@@flyboycpa Yep, exactly
