  • MiG-29 fighters have arrived in Ukraine from Slovakia, according to the country's Ministry of Defense.
    The Slovak government decided to donate 13 combat aircraft to the Armed Forces of Ukraine to counter the Russian invasion.
    The first four fighters were handed over to Ukraine in March, taking off under the control of Ukrainian pilots, and Ukraine has now received the remaining nine MiG-29s.

      but I feel Russia will try invade from the north again from Belarus territory again, but I can’t see Belarus forces getting involved, because they will be up against battle harden Ukrainian forces, and Belarus will have seen Russian military being defeated on many fronts against much smaller forces.

      They need aircraft like the Gripen as they were built specifically for this task + to fly off temporary airstrips and they have the missile compatibility to reach Russian jets. Unfortunately for air to air engagement the missiles that the Ukrainian migs carry (R-27ER1) range up to 100 km and the radar on the MiG29s is about the same 100 km. Russia's air-to-air missiles ranges in excess of 160KM. They need AMRAAMs (AIM 120s) or the newer Joint Advanced Tactical Missile (AIM-260) both are said to outrange Russian missiles. Lots of incorrect info in there. 9 of those MiGs were not in flying conditions, so they were transported on land, not flown out. Further, all Slovak MiGs were stripped of all NATO avionics before being shipped to Ukraine for obvious reasons. Last but not least, the MiG 29 has never been a ground attack aircraft. It is a fighter and can only fire unguided rockets and cannon at ground targets. Try to hit a point target with that from a jet. So unless the ex-Slovak MiG 29s will be modified to carry guided bombs and HARM missiles, they are only usable against air targets. And, as already mentioned here, the air to air missiles they can carry are too short ranged to give them a chance against modern Russian fighters. They can be used for shooting down guided missiles and bigger drones though.

    In spite of this very welcome donation , the Ukraine needs to regain control of its airspace and that will require more than currently being supplied , the attrition rate seems far higher than supplied , this coupled with training programmes on more NATO standard planes only being offered at the start of this year, a huge gap in training time and being able to get more modern planes active . The UK also needs to look at its own pilot training which is chronically short, a report informs us , of trained pilots also?

    • @Joe-og6br

    I think this is a massive mistake by NATO and her allies. Countries close to Ukraine have been donating equipment for the Ukrainian war effort in a piecemeal manner for over a year now, all the while making themselves weaker in the process. Who's to say this war isn't a ruse by Russia to weaken all the old soviet block countries before Russia launches a massive blitzkrieg style attack? We keep hearing reports of how Russia is running out of munitions, manpower and equipment. But the fact is Russia has not committed any of her professional forces, or any of her latest equipment to this fight. She is obviously holding these back and only committing old equipment and her least well trained forces including reservists and private military personnel. This leads me to believe Russia still possess the capability to launch a massive attack on weakened NATO eastern countries. The Ukrainian war has only served to galvanize the Russian people against NATO, and Russian properganda has constantly been telling its people that they are already fighting against NATO. We are falling into a trap, and I fear it's already too late.

    • @jamiegray6931
      @jamiegray6931 Рік тому

      Russia has been using its best equipment in Ukraine, T-90 and T-80 tanks, Su-35 and Su-34 fighter bombers, soldiers from the first guards tank army, all have been destroyed in large or small numbers depending on the situation. There isn't much Russia is holding back other than nuclear weapons. The west sending old equipment to Ukraine is indeed weakening it slightly, but these weapons are also draining Russia's ability to fight without a cost in NATO manpower.
      Russia could still attack NATO, but it has nowhere near the capability required to defeat it. Sending these weapons reduces Russia's capability, if you understand what I mean.

    • @Altair885
      @Altair885 Рік тому +1

      @@jamiegray6931 Small handfuls of modern equipment though really. Up to now I believe the Russians have lost a total of 15 or so of their modern T90M tanks, which is a token number given the type of warfare and the time scale! America had 23 M1 Abrams knocked out during the gulf war and that lasted a fraction of the time and they weren't facing an adversary armed with up to date weapons. All things considered they aren't losing many modern vehicles compared to their old stocks. And manpower isn't an issue for Russia, they don't care about their crews not being as well protected, their strategy is to flood the battlefield with cheap, rugged, easily transportable armour be it old or new. At the end of the day conscripts cost nothing to replace, I think people forget how Russia fought during WWII.
