Every time I watch these vids, it's sooooo great to see how far Quinn has come. I still watch his original videos weekly as I work on my e36, but great to see him doing even bigger builds.
Run a smoke test on that engine. I had a similar problem with an N54 engine. Misfire on cylinder 6. Customer had done plugs and coils. Came to me to do the injectors. Would delete codes and the car ran fine for 3 days before misfire cylinder 6 set again. I was so stumped at this point. Thinking maybe it was a corrupted ECM. I dont know why, but I decided to run a smoke test and found an air leak on one of the intercooler couplers. They have an oring on them. Swapped it out, cleared the codes, and voila. No more misfire. I was stumped after though as to why it hadn't set a code for the air loss but thats BMW for you 😅
I say its a valve issue - I had the same issue on an EJ2.5 changed all the outside parts to find out the valve was not seating properly and issue solved (thats my bet anyway). Also and intermittent issue.
Let's agree that we all need a Quinn in our car lives... I'm glad to see the M3 is healthy again and congrats to Jagger for winning this beauty! Very excited to see what you'll do with the old engine though, I'd like to see a really unexpected swap. Like build it into some Kia or Hyunday or something, make sort of a sleeper with it.
Smashed it Quinn, Love how dedicated you blokes are. You could have totally said nothing and passed the defect on like the dealer did. But, no. You guys fixed it with full transparency
Coming from a real technician, being ASE certified and all that doesn’t mean jack all. I’ve seen guys with zero ASE’s out wrench out diag guys with all the certs in the world. This is lazy unprofessional parts swapping or in this case just swapping out the whole engine..
@@roberthatley7415 Seriously. Jumping from a misfire under load to "lets replace the whole $10,000 engine because throwing thousands of dollars of unnecessary parts at it didn't work". Absolutely unbelievable. This channel is a clown show.
@@roberthatley7415that’s exactly what I said as soon as I heard “we’re swapping the engine” holy hell. This was the most extreme level of parts throwing
"Single cylinder misfire is usually caused by 1 of 3 things: bad spark plug, bad ignition coil, or bad fuel injector." They didn't bother to: * Verify the injector was getting a correct voltage or pulse width. * Pull the valve cover and inspect the valvetrain. * Do a leak down test. * Made a bunch of terrible assumptions, and started throwing parts at it. * And then decided to swap the engine. Cause they couldn't figure it out (and claim they ran out of time). * Check for intake tract air leaks. I'm not even BMW certified and I know that this particular BMW engine can throw a random cylinder 6 misfire if there is a leak in the intake tract. Yeah Certs mean absolutely nothing here, and critical thinking failed. Seeing all the nut huggers in the comments, explains why the auto world is going to utter shit if "techs" like this are being praised, let alone being acceptable in the field.
I really appreciate the mentality and attitude that you guys have towards the situation that you guys remaining positive and continue to put out quality content as well as quality work. As always. Keep up the good work you guys. Much love and hopefully we see a sub on the channel sometime soon😂😂😂
If you get Engine Malfunction Light or Limp Mode on BMW’s with Push-to-Start (at any speed) you can put the car in neutral & slightly apply the brake, you can push the Start/Stop button 3x in a row, the engine will turn off while driving, it will be in accessory mode. If you then depress the brake pedal & push the Start button the engine restarts as usual & you can engage gear again. It will clear your limp mode & faults on the fly. No need to pull over to a stop every time. Works for A/T & M/T
Had the same issue, but on an N54 - same exact symptoms. After a LOT of parts and lost sleep - it turned out being a botched (previus owner) injector seal that cost $4.
All I gotta say is, I hope they take care of Quinn. That man is absolutely a fucking goat. That man is carrying the team on his back for sure! Mad love to everyone in throtl tho 😂 Yall stay killing it.

I've watched 3 minutes and then paused it. be sure to check the relays for crank and cam sensors. Crank usually throws it into limp mode. Clear the ECU and the ECM and change the relays and also wires tracing back. Good luck lads.
If I was a betting man I bet the spring for the main oil valley thing is either broken or stretched and therefore it’s taking the oil pressure longer to catch up to itself and it’s probably losing that compression speed needed at that particular RPM. I’d take it apart and start checking all the oil valleys within the heads. Maybe pull the covers and watch for those valleys to fill up but that prolly won’t show much if you don’t see something right away. Hope this helps.
I had a similar issue with my Supra. it was ALL in the tune. Zero actual engine problems. The bad tune would also fix itself when I'd reflash the tune. After a few days of hard driving the issue would come back until I re-flashed the tune.

As a former M4 owner its not the engine :) Replace the Valvetronic shaft and it will fix your issue. its a wear and tear item. Mine did not need it but I know a few CS guys who had to replace it.
I have the same story about buying my 335is used from a dealer. Misfired day after it had such a mess of non kosher coils and plugs. Run a smoke test , vacuum leaks also cause misfires. I would have said check for carbon buildup on the valves but I know Quinn would have checked for that. Direct injection engines are plagued with carbon buildup on the valves since fuel isn't splashed on the valves like in older engines, which cleans them up.

I agree it's a seal issue. I would also check if the problem happened once the cars gas reached a certain amount. I have an X5 where once it's one a 1/4 tank, it causes a drivetrain malfunction and leaks a little in Cylinder 6.
I will say that being an audi tech i’ve seen this exact problem on audis newish 3.0T found in the b9 s4’s and such, and it has been a broken valve spring every single time, and it’s only when slowly rolling into boost at around 2200rpm.
It’s crazy how these mechanics will have so much pride in fixing a car from ground up and it would run perfectly. Buy when you go to them to fix your car it’s never complete, mechanic insurance! But great job
You should not be replacing the engine. Your problem is likely related to a boost leak or pre turbo exhaust leak. I would try to do a boost leak test first. 2nd I would inspect the turbo’s wastegate flaps / arms for wear.
Check if it gets enough fuel. If the fuel rail is connected only on the front, it maybe has not enough pressure or fuel in general for cylinder 6. if that’s the case, check the fuel pump and or the plumbing.

Pls do a detailed breakdown of the failed engine, also a turbo rebuild if possible.
Probably a cam sensor, crank sensor or something along the lines of a sensor/wiring fault

On my 2008 335xi with the N54, the misfire was fixed by replacing the VANOS solenoids all fuel and ignition parts were already replaced by the dealer.
👀 oh I can picture this guy giving it the beans and the background music is maroon 5 moves like jagger👌🏼😅
Transparency is key!
Throtl boys need to get ISTA. It's like $35 on Fleabay and another $17 for an ENET cable. Will let you diagnose all things (bull$hit) BMW.

it could be the vanos actuator or something in the vanos system
