Falafel is a simple street food, a Middle Eastern fast food if you will. Yet, for something served up on pretty much every street corner, it can seem exceedingly difficult and daunting to get right at home. Not anymore! This homemade falafel is so easy to make, packed with flavor and crispy even without deep-frying.
My biggest struggle used to be producing golden crispy falafel. I know traditional falafel is always deep-fried, but I just really didn't want to go that route. While deep-frying produces the most crispy and delicious falafel, it also adds a lot of calories and free radicals. I tried baking the falafel in the oven, frying it in the pan with just a little bit of oil, but it just never came out as crispy as from a deep-fryer. I literally went through bags of chickpeas, trying different modifications, but just couldn't get it right. Until one day my husband bought me an air fryer. The air-fried falafel is crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and perfect on salads or stuffed in a pita with some tahini dressing.

A famous and amazing sauce that goes with falafel is tahini sauce, it's made with raw tahini, water, lemon and salt(optionally also parsley and garlic) :)

When I was eating falafel in Israel I tried them with hummus and with tahini sauce as well! But I didn't know how to make it myself! Now I know!!!
      Thank you for the advice!!!
I have to search only for the right proportions :)

I’ve made these several times since this video was first uploaded. Made these again for last night’s dinner and they did not disappoint. I didn’t use the chickpea flour and the falafels held up in forming the dough and in the air fryer. My family loved them.

Oh great to see this! I made these in the oven today via your original recipe. Worked great, though I can't wait to get an air fryer too!
My mixture was quite wet when trying to shape balls out of it, so I kept adding gram flour, 4-6 tablespoons or so, and then it all molded nicely. So great how you're responding to messages and requests in this way :D Thanks so much!

I made the falafels in the air fryer along with your tzatziki sauce tonight and received rave reviews. I didn’t think they would come together at first so I halved the recipe and now I’m regretting it because my sons ate all of them in one sitting. I’m soaking my second batch of chick peas to make some more. Both recipes are a must try! Thank you!!!

So I just discovered your channel through a search for healthy food and I came across this recipe. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! And the interesting thing is i made it with chickpeas in a can! I simply added in more chickpea flour to make it dryer and then i shaped the dough into burger patties rather than balls..Soooo PERFECT and not crumbly at all! I'm packing some for lunch tomorrow! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your healthy recipes with the world. We definitely appreciate it

I have just set up my (first), (Breville) food processor and have some soaked chickpeas ready to make falafel (I cooked them, but won't next time now). So your vid is SO timely, I couldn't believe it. I will definitely pan-fry, as my mum & I don't have an air-fryer. I'd LOVE an air-fryer, but it was a squeeze trying to fit the food processor in the kitchen already, due to the limited space. You guys also solved for me the problem of how to process the garlic and onion, as I knew it would over-process the chickpeas to get those two ingredients minced. Great vid....thanks a lot!

My favorite way to make falafel is with a waffel iron. I add blue corn masa harina to make it a complementary protein and to add crunch. Also if you sprout the garbanzo bean to about 1/4 inch, it is more nutritious and tastes about 100 times better. I pressure cook the sprouted beans for nine minutes in my instant pot. They still stay firm, but it destroys the lectins. I then put them in the food processor with all the other stuff.

I made those falafels in my airfryer! To be honest I was afraid of the result because I usually use thas kitchen appliance only to make fried potatoes.
But it did it so good! I couldn't believe it!
So, the recipe itself and the combination of all the ingredients in it are superb! The taste is amazing, not too spicy and delicious!
Also, I added a 1/4 of lemon juice because I wanted them a little bit acid and it turn out great))
Now I have some new idea what to cook at home!
Although it seams difficult to make the falafel from the first sight but it's not! I can say that it's an easy recipe to make. The only work you have to do - is to make round small balls before frying them) But it's simple and fast enough!
Thank you, Petra!!! You make my house smell so good and make me to eat healthy variety of dishes!

I'm considering buying an air fryer. I love pan fried falafel. The outside is so crispy and the inside is moist and fluffy. I've baked them once and I really didn't like it. What is the texture of falafels that are air fried? I'd really appreciate your opinion!

    • @rani_jenny
      @rani_jenny 4 роки тому +1

@@aysharafique4941 I fried them in airfryer at about 170°C for about 15 minutes and the were crispy outside and moist inside! But I think the best combination to eat falafel is to serve them with Hummus or Tzatziki sauce. They work together really great!
For the first time I tried falafels in Israel and they were pan fried in a lot of oil and of course they were more soft that air fried.
But air fried are moist as well and it's better than to bake them on the oven for sure!
I also noticed in Israel that is spite of fact that falafel were pan fried and had moist, soft texture inside - they always were served with hummus or other sauces. So for that kind of dish it's good to combine them with sauce :)
So, my conclusion is that - air fried falafels are moist inside for sure! You have only to adjust, to get used to your airfryer, make some tests maybe as well in order not to over fry them there :)

I’m from Greece and just a friendly tip:don’t put lemon in the sauce !!it ruins the yogurt taste. Also the cucumber should be sliced in little squares (like ,if you cut a slice you should cut it twice more) because you want the cucumber “juice” to not blend with the yogurt and to blow in your mouth (that’s also a reason that it can stay longer in the fridge)!I love your videos and falafel, definitely I will give your recipe a try 💙

Is there something we can do to reduce the dryness of baked falafel? Like adding more liquid to the dough or baking it for less amount of time?

@@user-qe1el2xf3k good point, but I was hoping for least fatty solution (if possible), one of the reasons I'm not a fan of pan frying since they soak up too much oil :/

@@hellokittybg93 Do what I just did last week: get an airfryer. I know, I know, it's not cheap, but....it's worth it in the long run. I bought one at 130 dollars and it was on special.

@@NutritionRefined thank you for replying! I'll try both ways so we'll see.
But also, I was just wondering if you'd perhaps consider making a video about phytic acid and overcoming it? I've read quite a lot of blog articles saying that as vegan you need to soak each and every nut, seed, grain and even flour in hot water mixed with an acidic component or else non of it will benefit your body so now I've become quite paranoid; only I haven't seen any vegan cook on you tube ever address it or do it (other than soaking beans which makes sense). But since I really love your chanel and you seem to have a lot of input in vegan diet I was hoping you could shed some light on it and give us proper advice? Thanks

Yep, i bake mine because i have no air fryer and i find the method of bakingnin the pan too oily. I hope i can one day buy ab airfryer, good quality food processor and a whole lot more. Where i live there is not so much option for eating vegan. So most ingredients or kitchen appliances I Have to order and that’s expensive. Thanks for your recipes. Do you live in Europe?

If I do not have a garden where I can snip off some dill weed, how do I keep fresh dill fresh. I always waste the dill after using it for one or two recipes, so then avoid recipes with dill. Your videos are great, calming and informative.

You can use dry mint. It's so good!

I tried to do this for the second time but no matter what I do, they just fall apart even while forming them. I tried adding 4-5 times as much chickpea flour and still they fall apart, tried with ground flax seed, same thing. The only way I can make it, is by having at least 30% of the balls covered in oil, otherwise they fall apart. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, I'm thinking about blending it more, to a mush, maybe that will help stay together?
