Otis Spann tutorial is a video that includes all of the phrases, licks, and chops that you have taught us over the years and we are all extremely grateful Arthur..i was only a mediocre half wit player when i found your teachings..accidently surfing youtube and i clicked into your lessons and now i can finally hammer it almost like a low level virtuoso!..plenty of others out there but you dissect it in a way the viewer sees it..and sees it..and sees it thens gets it!..for me all i was lacking was some of the major/minor scales and some 7th diminish chords and thanks to you all the confusion is cleared up..for me its not a matter of copying the chops..its listening and playing from heart while remembering the original authors..in this case Otis Spann who along with Henry Gray have always been my 2 favs of all time...Arthur this lesson to me is the best of all of them..we should all thank Arthur personally for all these incredible blessed gifts...thanks soo much buddy from Okeechobee Slim on the Spacecoast
Thank you so much for the positive vibes and kind words! It makes me so happy to know that these lessons are helping others to play the way they have wanted to! 🙏😊
what a great tribute. you found a vid that lifted your playing up multiple levels , by giving you exactly the "harmony" insights we need to understand what blues piano needs to sound right. the kind of stuff that baffles a beginner, like little Ray Charles or any beginner getting shown the stuff by an older player. It really is good and full of all the meat, potatoes, gravy and bread to sop it up. It's all here.
Well done tutorial, clearly and straightforwardly demonstrated and explained. The meat, the potatoes, gravy. Form, voicings, scales. Enough bread to sop up the gravy. Licks. Target notes and hand positions to keep the more beginner players oriented. I've been playing blues piano for about.40 years, done tutorials myself ( by request not for biz but one got 50K hits) played with some great players. Chris Cain, Ike Cosse, Lisa Vennum, Darryl Rowe. and you done showed me some stuff here I missed somehow and needed on the basics of blues side. I would call that C/G on the turn around a gospel kind of move. Very open, suspended, dramatic. i cover that on my Driftin' Blues Tutorials that became a series (I've done 4). Blues on the jazzy tip. I also noticed that when you play the F before the D7 -- C major blues scale tapping the Eb, it's also A minor pent. and the Eb lets it act like vi7b5 /am7b5 leading to the D7.....like "o yeah, that's why that works" I am sure your listeners would like you to do Charles Brown's Driftin' (I WOULD TOO!!) I only explained my approach on my vids, but you cover the original complete versions so well. Thanks and good luck w your channel and music. MT
🎵Missed this live but so happy to finally catch up with this excellent video. This is the 40th now of these member requests tutorials and there's just such a wealth of material here to absorb and get under the fingers. Repetition of these licks is the key here so no worries Arthur, we've got loads to catch up with! Listening to these greats also helps to internalise these phrases into your head and then hopefully to the fingers. Thanks Arthur for yet another Excellent tutorial!! 👏👏👏👏🎹🎹🎹👍👍🎵
yeah, i say that now to kids and they don't know what i'm talking about. but i'm in germany now, so i guess that's to be expected- "wass ist 'ice cream'' to do with chordings?" :)
Awesome session Arthur! 😎. Was too early for me in CA to get up! I learn so much in every vid you do. There are so many song tutorials, I’m in no rush for your next ones!! Good luck in your studies. Catch you next time 😎🤘🎹
I agree with you about performance really helps you learn. When I lived in Vegas and I was working 5 to 7 days a week my playing really improved.. I've Been trying to master cocktail piano and if I don't play these songs and tricks after I learn I forget them . I had an accident and damaged my Ulnar nerve in my left hand. I stopped playing for a while and due to my age 68 the ulner damage and arthritis and neuropathy had really slowed me down. I started playing every day again for hours and that's the best physical therapy for my hands. I got back all my chops. Of course you always try to learn new stuff. I'm a proponent for PT. You must keep in motion to keep young.
Thanks Jay! I do take requests from members on my members channel. It's $5/ month and you can join and cancel as you like. I have over 40 tutorials of songs already up there. I think I have only 2 otis tunes so far.
He plays solo on straight traditional blues changes, not the changes of the song. So it's like the bridge part. That's why there's no E7 Fm and other stuff. Thanks for your tutorial! Looks like it's the only one of this amazing rare live performance of Otis Spann.
Beautiful song. Do you sell the score of your interpretation? If not, can you tell me where to find it? I recently bought "How to Play Boogie Woogie Piano" from you and I find it complete. I often refer to it. Pierre
Thanks Pierre! No, sorry there is no sheet music that I have for this. Hopefully you can get what you need from the video and referring to the other lessons I mention… sorry!
Superb break down bro.. Heavy on the maths dose...which is how things are paletable aye, ive never played like that it spins me out, cant compute it! Ears alone (

This tutorial is fantastic. You're giving away all of Otis' secrets. Which is great. Really good video. Easy to understand. Thanks for doing this.
You're very welcome!
One of the very best blues tutorials.

When I was young all the older black blues and R and B Jazz bands called the 1-6-2-5 or 1-6-4-5 changes " ice cream".

hello fellow 68. I'm right with you. Got to play to stay fit-
Perhaps one day a tutorial for Ann Rabsons slow blues tune "Another you" would be a great idea?! Sounds incredible good!!
Great suggestion!
I came into this thinking it was going to be a dud. So glad I was WRONG!!! Do you take requests for otis tunes?
