  • Mathieu van der Poel claimed an incredible victory in the first Monument of the year, winning Milano-San Remo for the first time in his career. A devastating attack on the famous Poggio climb proved to be the decisive moment of the race as the Alpecin-Deceuninck rider beat Filippo Ganna, who was second, Wout van Aert and Tadej Pogacar in a high-quality race.

    what a beautiful job by Mathieu ....not only the surge just at the right moment over the top to create the small but critical gap but then continuing on rounding all those switchbacks so perfectly all the way down to the finish to keep the other strongest bike riders in the world who were still clearly chasing hard as they could the entire way, only off his tail by just a handful of secs. .... which at the finish turned out to be plenty !

      There's some others. Strade Bianche when van der Poel won it. The final group of 6 had the World Champion (Alaphillippe), a former TdF champion (Bernal), former CX World Champion (Wout van Aert), future MTB Olympic gold medalist (Pidcock), and the current TdF champion at that time (Pogacar). That being said, this final group of 4 was equally epic.

      '4 totally different riders' ? Van der Poel and Van Aert ? The past 10 years almost any road classic or cyclecross race on tv , you see WvA and MvdP in one shot. There are not many rider 'duos' so similar.
      There is only one minor difference. You see Van Aert work for TJV in the Tour and Van der Poel will give it a go on the mountainbike.

      I don't feel great about Ganna getting 2nd. Those 3 might've had a chance to catch VdP if he could've held Wout's wheel through the turns. Instead, MvdP, Wout and Ganna were all pushing air and Pogacar is smaller (weighs less) than those 3. So when they got to the flat, the gap had actually gone up maybe 2 seconds and everyone was gassed, the chasers didn't have the advantage they could have had. Not taking anything away from MvdP, he was powerful and had great tactics.

    Cosmic facepalm for the director of the broadcast at 2:28, what an idiot.
    We missed most of MVDP's move while he zoomed in on Hermans, Pedersen and Mohoric.
    These 3 had already lost all relevance as soon as the split happened but somehow he gave them 10 seconds of airtime in the Poggio.
    Thanks to him we all missed the move that allowed MVDP to get away from some of the greatest riders of our generation.

    Interesting to see Pog hanging with the big power guys. When the road hits 10% he will be very hard to beat... But today he looked human after all.

      lmao. 'hanging with the big power guys' ? Haven't you seen Pogacars palmares ? He is a classics big power guy himself. In this peloton he is the rider with most monument wins (3x Lombardia, 1x Flanders, 1x Liège) and add to that the Amstel, Fleche Wallonne and Strade Bianche ! These are all races where you may need a good punch for the win.. I was surprised he could not follow VdP .

    • @rikkshow
      @rikkshow 4 місяці тому

      @@allws9683 Perhaps you do not understand power to weight ratio. But the big power guys are much heavier than POG and need much higher power to go up at the same speed when it is 9%, but on a flat they have a big power advantage since it is 90% about wind resistance and POG's lower weight is not a benefit anymore. You missed physics class? LMAO...

    • @allws9683
      @allws9683 4 місяці тому

      @@rikkshow Of course I understand the power and weight ratio ! But the Ciprezza and Poggia are hardly to consider flat course, right !. When he wins Strade Bianche is up front in Flandres and outsprint Alaphilippe and Valverde in Liège you should know longtime that power and punch are not a problem for Pogacar. And the same for a fly like Tom Pidcock.
      Pogy even forced the break on the Poggio . that's far from 'hanging' .

    • @rikkshow
      @rikkshow 4 місяці тому

      @@allws9683 you didn't understand my comment, did you even watch the video? 😂 I say it is relatively easy for POG on the steep sections. But at the flatter top he gets dropped and for the rest of the race he sits last of the four and finishes last off the four. That means he was hanging on. Three big power guys in front of him all the way to the finish...

    Nei giorni scorsi alcuni "sapienti" di ciclismo sentenziavano:
    - Filippo Ganna, per migliorare su strada, deve mettere da parte la pista.
    - Mthieu Van der Poel, per la stessa ragione deve dimenticare un po' il ciclo-cross.
    - Idem per Van Aert.
    A giudicare dalla classifica della Milano-Sanremo (1° - 2° - 3°) mi sembra che facciano bene a continuare come prima, infischiandosene dei giudizi di chi commenta ma non pedala.
    Quanto a Pogacar (4°)... "tra cotanto senno"..., che non corre su pista e non pedala nel fango, va fortissimo su strada, ma la Milano-Sanremo non mi pare abbastanza adatta alle sue caratteristiche (non offre sufficienti asperità; avete visto come il pistard ha placcato, in salita, lo scalatore).
    ... Così è se vi pare... 🚴‍♂️😇
