I can't take Paul seriously. He doesn't strut around with a massive beard, 5/11 pants and a T-shirt 3 sizes too small. He doesn't swear every other word and sing the praises of 9mm Tupperware guns as the ONLY choice in every situation, so he's obviously not an "operator". Khắc cảnh lê ... I was fortunate enough to be trained as what some would call a "swat officer " and served in that capacity for 14 years. In that time we were the test bed for weapons and equipment. Much of the equipment we tested proved to be effective. What stemmed from that IMHO was an over reliance on kit and what we called it in 2005 "CDI", chicks did it. And I believe it led to the tacticool opinions we have seen since.

BillyZaneism Well I’m not what you call a professional so I won’t try it at home.
It has been my experience from testing .40 S&W ammo for police use that just about anything in a hollow point from a major manufacturer works pretty darned well. When you chose between 155, 165, and 180 grain loads, you are pretty much choosing based on your preference for the level of the recoil and barrier penetration characteristics, and I don't think I've ever tested a really "bad" .40 round from a major manufacturer. This is not totally surprising because the .40 was designed with police work in mind. I still have a SIG P229 and a Smith and Wesson M&P, and in the unlikely event I ever found myself back in a patrol car, I'd be wearing one of those two pistols over any other caliber I could choose, except that I might drop the old .357 SIG barrel in the P229 and be just as happy. One reason I still like the .40 is that pretty much anything you stuff in it works pretty well.
When my small department tested the heavy for caliber 9mm 147 grain Ranger T in tests conducted with several other agencies, we didn't find it to be awful, and it did pretty well on the barrier penetration tests, even though expansion seemed muted once it hit the gel. It seemed pretty comparable to a Speer Gold Dot in the same weight, again not surprising since they are direct competitors, much like Pepsi and Coke. In the end, at that time, we didn't see enough advantage to a caliber change, decided to keep our .40's, and loaded them with Ranger loads. I understand that a few years later they did switch to 9mm pistols and settled on the 124 grain +P HST load because they got a great deal on it.
If I ran a 🚔 or were a procurement, contract officer, I'd opt for a HST 124gr +P 9mm or the Hornady Critical Duty 124gr +P 9mm. Many gun owners & armed professionals are not aware that gun makers, S&W Ruger Glock etc use 124gr to R&D 9mm(9x19mm).
@@DavidLLambertmobile I know there are arguments to be made for the heavier bullets in 9mm, but my sources at Federal/Speer tell me that the performance of the 124 +P is essentially identical to their 147 grain offerings, and that they offer both to accommodate the preferences of departmental purchasers, as they do with the standard pressure load for departments that won't use +P.
They have also told me that the 124 +P round needs at least a 4 inch barrel to show a material advantage over their same weight standard pressure load. So I tend to agree with you and have standardized on the 124 grain +P HST. In my subcompact pistols it really doesn't recoil more than standard pressure, and is only 30 fps faster in something like a Shield. So I run it in all my 9mm pistols and get decent accuracy and sights that shoot to point of aim/impact. But if for some reason I cannot get it, I'll happily use the 124 standard pressure round, especially in my shorter barreled pistols. Cheers!

I CCWed a Beretta 96D surplus .40 in the late 1990s. I varied from 135gr to 165gr factory JHPs. Mainly Golden Saber & Corbon JHP.
You two must be cops, because supposedly cops are the only ones that can get the Ranger T 165

Makes 2 of us. Same for the 165gr Speer Gold Dot. The 165gr loads in .40 are heard to beat, except for maybe the Hydra-Shok which is anemic at best.

People are quick to accept ANYTHING positive said about 9MM as pure gospel, but refute any praise about .40 S&W. There is a LOT of misinformation going around on forums, and every time someone tries to make the claim that there's no difference between the two...it's just a claim with no had evidence. For some reason people want to perceive 9MM to be better performing than it actually is, by doing so they immediately minimize .40 S&W or any other caliber that's not 9MM by deeming it 'useless'. Just because 9MM is more practical and easier to shoot that does NOT mean that it's the most effective. Calibers like .40 S&W, .357 SIG or even .45 ACP kind of fall into this subcategory that's an upgrade from 9MM. Although it seems like .40/.357 SIG are slightly better options than .45 ACP due to power and capacity. Anybody that honestly believes power isn't a plausible aspect in modern ballistics is a moron, sadly there are a lot of morons these days. The problem with .45 ACP is that it's a somewhat outdated caliber that's only loaded at half the pressure of .40 or 9MM, Glock tried to address this problem with the widely panned .45 GAP. Personally I'd rather get good performance AND good capacity, which is why I tend to go with .40 S&W. It's an extremely underappreciated duty/carry round!
I know what you mean about 45 acp, and i wouldnt choose it for concealed carry outside in the streets, but for home defense?? Well i think its the best for home defense because it has the least penetration of all while giving the most expansion and great tissue damage. What you think?

@@bryanbaker5942 People are idiots. You can carry around a .22 if you want. It's still plenty lethal. I originally bought a 40 as my first handgun because I liked the idea of having something in between a 9 and a 45. The best of both worlds. Sure it's a bit snappy but it's still a good round.

I lean towards the .357sig in 2020 but the traditional .40 is fine. 1000s of 🇺🇸 cops, federal agents used .40 guns for years.
First, thank you Paul for all of the time you invest in these videos. My personal choice for every day carry is a Springfield XD sub-compact in 40 S&W. I had initially selected Winchester PDX1 as my carry ammo until I found an abnormality in the crimp of the bullet during loading. I found 14 out of the box of 20 that were severely over crimped. I contacted Winchester and they resolved the issue, however they failed initial quality checks to keep it from leaving the factory that way. After receiving the coupon for a replacement box I first opened the box to check the crimp and those too were over crimped. Ultimately I chose the Sig Sauer Elite Performance V-Crown and saved more than 4 dollars per box of 20. Your videos covering that ammunition further vailidate my choice. Once again, thank you.
I already knew the Ranger T .40 was awesome in both 165 and 180 grain. My big takeaway here was that I need to find some of the white box hollow points. What an awesome bargain as I know I've seen as low as $20 for a box of 50.
I love your no BS style of just putting it out there, Paul. You do some great testing on ammo. These are some of the most informative real world type testing of ammo videos out there.

This goes to show how much the specific load in each cartridge type ("caliber") matters--not the brand, series, or even the basic projectile design, but each specific load. I select loads for each cartridge type based on multiple test results, at least (your meat targets being one of them). That said, there are other factors when choosing between two equally effective loads. For one thing, I like how the Winchester Ranger-T, Bonded, and PDX1 series all have completely sealed cartridges (both at the primers and bullets) and are extremely resistant to bullet setback--this makes the ammo very resilient to environmental conditions outside of a sealed, dehumidified ammo can. This wouldn't make me choose the underperforming 147-grain 9mm Ranger-T, but it is one reason I've chosen this series for .40 S&W (either bullet weight, 165 or 180 grains) over others that are just about as effective and even slightly more consistent (e.g. Federal HST) or less expensive (e.g. Winchester White Box JHP). It gives me some peace of mind regarding reliability under potentially adverse conditions. Additionally, I tend to avoid the Speer Gold Dot series because they are very prone to bullet setback. I like their products and use quite a bit of Speer training ammo, but for defensive use my personal preference--even though it's probably unnecessary--is for more physically robust ammo that will work right even if one submerges it in water or oil, and won't allow the bullet to be pushed into the case, which can raise pressure to dangerous levels.
Must say that the many reviews Paul does is very detailed and to real life as not just gel but uses other rounds to compare to what he is testing but!!! Who else will be out in what seems to be always rain and snow testing!. My hat is off to this guy. unlike others promoting products he leaves the proof to the many.

Hey, Paul! The Winchester 180gr T Series is the Cartridge my Department used before I retired. I'm going to start caring it again. I stopped using it in my EDC, now that I'm a Civilian because, I'm a bit leery of Juries should I ever become involved in a Civilian Shooting, Heaven forbid! In hindsight, it's always best to use what you train with. Thanks for the good video.

40 definitely seems to have the right stuff associated with it. It has far more than enough performance to get the job done without living on the edge like 380acp and to a smaller degree 9mm.
+Brian Olsen I feel that is mostly in part because .40 S&W is typically loaded to about 80% maximum level. Most factory .40 S&W loads seem to have the same velocity range depending on bullet weight, and a few I've taken apart to see whats inside would seem to indicate this. Not to mention, it's the only way they can get a 180gr projectile moving at around 1,000 to 1,100 fps from a 4 inch barrel or so. It's why you typically dont see a +P .40 S&W load out there. That and I suppose that's what 10mm is for if you want to go that route.
I personally dont view .380 ACP as a "living on the edge" kind of caliber in terms of performance. I find most factory .380 ACP to be loaded to similar levels as well. The biggest disparity in .380 ACP for a long time was hollow point ammunition, but now there are plenty of reliable and reputable brand of JHP ammo that deliver consistent performance on the .380 ACP.
But typically any caliber that is loaded to maximum or near maximum from the factory comes out this way. .45 ACP is a prime example as it's been loaded nearly the exact same now for 100 years.
Right, with 9mm you have to be more picky with personal defense loads, and then there is the common issue of practice loads being noticeably lighter. While .40 S&W is not entirely free of such issues, if you buy commonly available factory ammunition, then you probably won't have any issues--with the common stuff, virtually all personal defense loads are effective enough, and virtually all practice loads are stout enough for effective training. It's like .45 ACP in this way--not as much to concern oneself about.
That is the beauty of the .40 caliber. Even shit ammo is better than 9mm
The T series used to be part of Winchester’s law enforcement ammo line. Not sure if it still is or not. The T is rumored to stand for Talon as in Black Talon. Every round I’ve ever seen recovered expanded like crazy. It is or was available with a bonded projectile to limit jacket separation as well. I use the +P in 45 acp in my kimber ultra carry.

Excellent again. Seeing with your own eyes is to me the gold standard. I am a fan of Hornady Critical Defense because the local Leo's use the Critical Duty. It is a legal reason, if I ever end up in court I'm using a civilian version of the Leo ammo. And it does preform very well. This is based on perceptions from my attorney of the local views of law enforcement and public. And yes he's a criminal defense attorney. That's what you will need. I think a current day comprehensive video on the aftermath of a shooting would be great Paul.

I swear I should have tied a roll of fleece blankets together when I was in asscrackastan. That seems to stop bullets better than a vest. Lighter weight too. Then when it got cold, just unroll for sleepin'. Love the meat target
Nicely done. The Ranger T was the issue ammo at my agency the last 5 or 6 yrs i worked there. Mainly because it was relatively cheap on the state contract. It had a good reputation, and always worked well on the occasional deer i had to humanely dispatch. Glad to see it did well on the meat target. Before that, we always carried Gold Dots, and i liked those also. Although i did have an interesting dud/defective round of it once. Thanks for everything you do. Time for the 45ACP version!

In 2020 more state & local PDs went to 9x19mm BUT many cops, troopers had no problems with 165/155 gr .40 guns. The CBP, US Border Patrol issued Beretta 96Ds & P229s for years.

I'm glad you tested the WWB 180 gr JHP. These have been showing good performance in online testing and are actually a good budget option if you had to have something from a brick and morter in a hurry. It wouldn't be my first choice but unlike most entry level JHP ammo it actually performs well. The WWB JHP in 9mm are far less impressive.
Ranger T was used by lots of PDs a few years back before the FBI NEW 9mm is good as 40 cal report. It;s a great time to buy a USED dept trade in Beretta 40 and Ranger T now.

Another great video! I’ve seen a lot of videos showing the effectiveness of .223/5.56, as well as a number of .357mag videos. Knowing that you can get comparable energy if you use the right loads of each, I’d love to see a video comparing a .223 from carbine length AR to a .357mag from a lever carbine. Specifically I’d love to see wall penetration/overpenetration, cement block destruction as well as the famous “meat target”. The goal being to compare for home defense. This would be extremely nice to see in light of all of the talks about “assault rifle bans”, seeing other carbine options for home defense (that would be immune to some of these proposed bans) and how they stack up.

It's actually not a bad question. Fired out of a rifle, the .357's energy is not really that far behind the .223's. Obviously, aiming at something 100 yards out, it'd be no contest. But the .357 would be the better brush gun. I can't see either as a home defense gun though.
Steven Sevieria first, I’m going on actual kinetic energy of the bullet, not velocity as we all know .223/5.56 is 2-3x the speed of most .357...but the bullet weight of the .357 is in most cases 2-3x heavier. I’m in no way saying they are the same- especially 5.56, which we all know is more powerful.
BUT if you look at the ballistics of what most would commonly use in each gun as a defensive round, you will find more using more of a varmint load(soft tip vs FMJ or green tip) , and those would most likely be in. .223 NOT 5.56 (remember, I’m talking what you would be likely to find on your big box store shelf). In a .357, you would most likely grab something like a Speer Gold Dot or Hornady Defense in a 357 +P round. Again, comparing kinetic energy (mass x velocity), now you see the .357 coming a bit closer to the .223. Handloading, anything is possible (if you are willing to trust it!), but that’s neither here nor there. The gap you’d find (to my best guess) between the defensive .357 to .223 rounds would be closer than say 300blk and 5.56.
Either way, both are common defense calibers and it would be an interesting comparison.

rebelcat420 12 Gauge #4 00 buck ammo in a shotgun (any pump shotgun preferably an 18 ½ in barrel with a light) IS the best home, apartment, camper, tent defense weapon that will definitely get the job done and not kill grandma that is sleeping next door. (My opinion from studies that I've done for the perfect Home Defense gun) My dream is a 300 Blackout 9 ½ barrel with a suppressor because that could also have a really short barrel and be suppressed while still maintaining velocity but the ATF don't give those out for free 😢

Thanks for another good video. I like seeing real tests of these bullets. The moral of the story still seems to be that Winchester "white box" is a good choice most of the time. I've bought some Federal "white box" for my 9mm. I need to try this someday.

There were two loadings originally for the .40 S&W cartridge. They were the 180 grain at about 950 fps and the 155 grain version at about 1150 fps. We chose the 155 grain version since it duplicated the 158 grain .357 loading that we had carried for many years past. As time went on we began to get inquiries from other Law Enforcement agencies in regards to the 155 grain JHP’s performance in the field since they had experienced dismal performance with the 180 grain version(s.) If one considers that a .45 ACP 185 grain projectile travels about the same velocity as the 40 S&W and is a larger diameter. (.452” to .410”) the only advantage the .40 has is an increased magazine capacity, and the superior performance of the 155 grain version.
Later, some manufactures brought forth a 165 grain JHP cartridge.
40 is actually back in my favor. Good data. Thanks for the video!
Paul does a gereat job of real world ammo testing and is is one of my fav experts. I have really come to love the 40 and it is a very boldacius defense load. I carry both 40 and 9 MM but from my shooting the 40 does the trick better!
When I was a police officer our department used Winchester Rangers. I never had to shoot anyone (thank God), but on the range those things had some serious blast, at least in 45acp anyway. Most of the guys in our department carried a Glock 22 40SW, at the closest distance at the range (about 7 feet) they would just punch a hole in the target. But when I fired a round out of the Glock 21 it would blow the paper off the wood frame half the time.... it was like I had set off a howitzer! : )

As in your "Shoot like your Grandfather and using the ammo he would have used" It is hard to dispute the cubic inches in Engines and Bullet weights. There are a few exceptions, However, I feel overall heavy bullets just do more, Maybe not a lot more, but it is more. speed and bullet weight does have its value, However, Not if they fail to do what they are intended to do. another awesome Video for the Masses Paul.
