    It's nice to see someone who actually knows what they're talking about when it comes to Black Talons and T-Series ammo, as well as adding testing to back up their claims. I think this is the first and only test video with the different generations of the Black Talon design being pitted against each other side-by-side. Great job and thanks for the video TnB!

      Took the words right out of my mouth. Seems like half the self-professed "gun experts" bestow some mythical status upon the Black Talons, thinking they were the pinnacle of JHP design and wishing they were still sold today (ignorant of the fact that Winchester has moved on and improved their design).

    Hey Twang, if you ever acquire some 180 grain t-series, it'd be nice to see how that stacks up. I liked the video but if you have a lighter faster bullet, given similar/same bullet construction, you should see wider expansion and less penetration generally speaking.
    Either way, good video! Enjoyed it.

      TWANGnBANG I still feel you should have done the test with the current 180gr Ranger-T, it literally performs exactly the same in testing at our department, besides the cosmetic changes, the 180gr loads are identical.
      Edit: the 165gr full load Ranger-T does have a much better track record in real world LE use versus the 180gr load, but sadly, both lag behind the 124+P and 127+P+ 9mm and 230 (both standard pressure and +P) 45ACP Ranger-T loads in documented LE use.

    Yep. Even the "legitimate" gun mags made them sound like the most awesome handgun bullet ever made, which I bought hook, line, and sinker. It wasn't too far from the truth, though. They worked very hard at making a completely new type of bullet, and the basic design is still going strong.

    That's right where it should be and exactly the same velocity as the 180gr T-Series. If you store your ammo right, age will not affect modern powders at all.

  • @cmj20002
    @cmj20002 6 років тому +7

    The 180gr bullet is too heavy for .40 cal. It is a great weight for the 10mm that pushes the bullet out at a much higher velocity. I have some old defense ammo that CCI made over 10 years ago. They use a 155gr Gold Dot hollow point bullet and the powder charge gives them a muzzle velocity of 1200fps and that is very good for .40 cal. In contrast I have some JHP 180gr defense loads for my 10mm that are 1350 fps at the muzzle. For those JHP's they need some velocity in order to expand well, if the speed isn't there you will have poor expansion.

    • @berettaxd7566

      Eh 180 seems alright. Less power, correct, however you get better penetratiin and a but less recoil. Helpful when your target is full of dense bones.

    I'm with you, which is why I was really happy to see how the T-Series performed. If you watch carefully, you can see the gel block compresses much more for the T-Series than the Black Talon. Having an additional 20% of KE doesn't hurt, either.

  • @TWANGnBANG
    @TWANGnBANG 11 років тому

    Nope. The changes to the Black Talon were specifically to increase the expansion and reduce penetration. Winchester felt they overemphasized the barrier penetration at the expense of soft tissue performance. You might have seen bullets shot into different media that performed differently, but did they also compare the T-Series shot into the same medium? Also, what caliber bullets did you see?

    Actually, if you look at Winchester's published data, the 180gr T-Series penetrates LESS than the 165gr. They got a lot of complaints that the Black Talon was overpenetrating, so they worked to reduce the penetration quite a bit.

  • @TWANGnBANG
    @TWANGnBANG 11 років тому

    Check out Winchester's data on both loads. What I found matched theirs almost perfectly for the 165gr, so I expect that the 180gr data they have to be equally accurate.

      A lot of people prefer A round that does not penetrate as far because most of them are using it in home defense. So when you’re talking about a potential miss going through a couple layers of drywall or only one Most people side with the less penetrating bullet. Simply because they don’t want roundsflying around entering their neighbors also

    • @ChucksSEADnDEAD
      @ChucksSEADnDEAD 6 років тому +4

      Most bullets are made to be barrier blind and it won't make a difference if you miss. The difference is their expansion on a wet/soft medium.
      The bullets are made to not come apart when shooting through autoglass and car doors because the police routinely needs to do that. When hitting something like drywall bullets tend to punch through unscathed, deform slightly or lose a petal depending on bullet design and construction - and keep going without achieving expansion.
      EDIT: in fact one of the reasons cops moved away from MP5s to AR15s when entering houses is because pistol hollow points are a greater liability.

  • @anonymouslee2083

    T-Series works great in .40S&W, it has expands as wide as Federal HST in .45ACP does! The .45 version of T-Series expands even more, reaching a whopping 0.99-1.04 inches! The fact that it can reliably expand at subsonic velocities and still hit 12+ inches of penetration makes this a monster of a round!

  • @al01100
    @al01100 7 років тому

    The 250gr 44mag and 180gr 357 mag black talon loads were great hunting bullets. I`ve taken whitetail with both and had complete penetration with both and obvious evidence of expansion when field dressing the animals. I still have a very good supply of 44mag...about 700rnds but, my 357 stash is down to only 340rnds. They obviously aren`t designed as defensive rounds in these calibers but, in the field, they always leave an exit wound and the resulting blood trail. I wish they were still available.

    Marketing baloney they came up with to justify the color. The SXT, which was the Same eXact Thing without the Lubalox, never had a reliability problem due to *lack* of Lubalox. Winchester simply went on a black coated bullet bender, and the Black Talon was one of them.

    Thanks T&B but I smell BS lol.. It's hard to believe the expansion is that much of a difference between the two.. How come the BT did not expand properly like the RT? I have see many pictures of the BT expanded that have the star pattern on the face rather then just a circle like in your test. This video hurt my feelings a little and I own both bullets.. Do you repete your expansion test more then once and then use the average or just fire one round? REMATCH! lol
