When I create a new cilynder, I usually set the subdivision caps to 0, so the cap is an NGon instead of a lot of triangles. Much easier to select.
also, for some of the details, I would do with floating geometry with color ID on the high poly, but that's just my preference.

I use marmoset toolbag, just apply a turntable there and render it.
