What happens when the bleach runs out? Here is a more sustainable way. Boil it. I grew up in Cuba and our water was muddy out of the tap (when there was running water). We also had a cistern where we collected rain water. We would let it settle, filter through cloth and boil it. We even had a pot designated just for boiling drinking water. It was full of minerals 😂 But this was something we did everyday. Just part of the family routine :)

Lol! This reminded me of the old house we grew up in. The city water makes you sick so I would boil it, freeze it and boil it again before I deemed it drinkable. I would also fill the ice cube trays with the water I made drinkable that way.

    Glad you mentioned this:
Bleach only has a shelf life of 6 months. You need to store bleach in cool, dry, dark places, but the active ingredient, sodium hypochlorite, WILL expire in 6 months. Sodium hypochlorite dissipates because it is very concentrated and is not very stable over time. I know, I used to work at Clorox as a chemist and worked with bleach and other various products.

I would like to point something out, that using bleach to make water drinkable, you arent necessarily purifying the water, you are disinfecting the water. Purifying the water would be something like distilling, because it would remove chemicals and all contaminates, but disinfecting just kills pathogens making the water safe to drink, as long as there arent any other type of chemical contaminates. Just figured i would mention that.

Back in the early 60s (Duck and Cover days) we had to bring in a gallon of bottled water and food to store at school in case of a bombing attack. We were told to use an empty bleach bottle, not rinsed and still wet inside, then filled with tap water. The idea was that it would keep the water safe to drink for the school year. I haven't thought of that for years. Thank for the timely reminder.

      FYI
From another reputable site. Here's how to do it and the formula.
      Pool Shock--
      CALCIUM
      HYPO CHLORIDE
      68% Strength or Higher
      With no other chemicals
      Water base Mixture:
      1 heaping tsp=2 gal
      1/2 tsp=1 Gallon water
      1/8 tsp=1 Pint of water
      1 Pint=12 1/2 gallon of water
Premix Pool Shock--in a separate jar. Shake, let it settle just a bit.
Then add that mixture to the water you need to sanitize.
The trick is finding the correct Pool Shock.
      It's not cheap.

Morning. Guys, great job. I want to stress that even bleach and other products need time also. It has to set for the kill time. Most cloudy water can settle out. I encourage people watch videos on water treatment. Intake, how they clarify water, treat water to make pottable for consumption. For drinking....I would still boil if you can for drinking. Of course scalding water for the final rinse off dishes. As raw water can contaminate your dishes. I do this already at home daily. Anyone that is a responsible person needs to know this subject inside and out. You must always assume a basic level of contamination in any water that you do not know. Great video.

On a funny (or not so funny for many) story, my parents went to Mexico for a convention many years go. The hotel warned them to drink only bottled water and also use bottled water to brush their teeth. My Mom decided she wasn't taking any chances and drank only beer and also used it to brush her teeth. She was the only one of many many people at that convention that didn't get sick. My Dad said he was so sick he had to get better to even die.

Something restaurants do in Mexico, is bring the water bottle to the table, and then they open it for you. It's a trick! It just has tap water in it and the lid placed back on. In addition to my previous comments: All public water systems are required to inform their customers on a yearly basis the integrity of the water they were served the previous year. This is called The Consumer Confidence Report and it is due to the regulating agency on June 30th. So, for the year 2021, the Report is due June 30, 2022. In addition, the CCR Certification (which says how their customers received the CCR) is due to the regulating agency 90 days later, no later than September 30, 2022. The Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) gives a list of all the things the water is/was tested for. For example: It will give a list of IOCs VOCs, SOCs. Radioneuclides, asbestos and other contaminants. It will only list the contaminants the system is required to sample for. If there is an exceedence or a positive (micro organism), the report will mention it along with the EPAs maximum contaminant level. The report will also include health effects language and copies of public notices if there were any exceedences with the water. You should be able to call your water system for a copy. Even if they did not have an issue with the water they served, they are still required to fill out the report and send it to their customers and the regulating agency.

Thank you for the content Goshen Prepping! I appreciate your videos. Could I also throw in that a good rolling boil for a minute will kill all microorganisms in the water as well, for people who don't want the bleach or simply don't have it. Note that when you boil, you also concentrate chemical contaminants like nitrates as the pure water boils off and the contaminants remain in the container so it is better to adhere closely to the minute. I'll also throw in that cheap charcoal filters do a pretty good job of removing chlorine and other contaminants such as pesticides.

It seems to me that the sky is one of the best water filters. I collect rainwater instead of ground water. This removes the concern of many (but not all) contaminents. It runs through a first flush filter and then through a sediment filter before going into collection tanks. Water is then bottled and bleached with 7.25% sodium hypochlorite. It is then stored until needed. When ready for use, the water is run through a filter containing 1lb of kdf-55 filtration media to mitigate any potential heavy metal contaminants, 2 lbs of activated carbon to remove the bleach taste and to absorb any contaminants remaining from the sanitization process, and finally a 1 lb fine sand filter to finish. This leaves me with a delicious, slightly alkaline water with a ppm around 20. Any feedback on how to improve is much appreciated.

A nice little tip i was told is after the treatment time passes you should still smell a faint (very faint ) Chlorine smell. If you dont smell ANYTHING it means the chlorine has all reacted. Which is what you want , but if the water is very questionable it could also mean you didnt use enough bleach. If you open it and dont smell anything Half the treatment amount (if you did 6 drop per gallon ,do 3) and wait 30 minutes again. If you smell even tap water there are trace amounts of chlorine, because a little little chlorine wont hurt you, but not enough can.
Just want to say this. Way too much chlorine can be dangerous too, but i hope you already know that. Also chlorine will naturally "boil off" at room temp in a open container.

Interesting video. I've found several 6 log water filtration devices very affordable at camping stores. I would use that first before I filter surface water through the cloth. These filters remove most of the EPA regulated IOCs found in surface water. Bleach only kills micro organisms. In addition, if I'm going to have water stored for a lengthy time, I would also want it tested for chlorine residuals because it would give me an indication if I put too much chlorine in the storage container. EPAs maximum contaminant level for chlorine residuals is 4.0 mg/l. In public water systems , any system that disinfects with chlorine must test for chlorine residual and disinfection byproducts. Disinfection byproducts occur when treated water sits, usually found at the ends of distribution systems (the last house) or storing too much water (not used fast enough). The disinfection byproduct can be resolved by either looping the distribution system so there are no dead ends or with a blending plan in which you will add a smaller amount of bleach to the 6 log then add to the previously stored water. Disinfection byproducts of water disinfected with chlorine are TTHMs and HAA5s (both regulated by the EPA. You want to drink water that is safe and healthy. Another thing to consider is if you want to store water that comes from your tap, you need to check if it has been previously treated and for which contaminants so you're not adding one treatment on top of another and creating a possibly very toxic situation mixing chemicals.

One more post. Sorry but it is subject related. Back in the 90s. The city of Milwaukee has a water contamination problem that killed many people. The normal treatment was not working.
Flint. I worked in Flint during the crisis at a school. It was real bad. My health was impacted.
Toledo. About 6 years ago the city water has a toxin in the water. It could not be filtered out in the quantity needed. The toxin was from the natural reaction to problems in the lake. I believe it was from the blooms in the lake.
These events are perfect examples of water problems in real time in the best of times.

I wonder about the product silver bullet roots used in hydroponics-
The product is based on the symbiotic combination of silver (colloidal silver?) and hydrogen peroxide. The silver ions are attracted to the negative charge the pathogens emit naturally, the silver then inhibits the pathogens defence mechanism and the hydrogen peroxide comes in and finishes them off.
As a by-product of the hydrogen peroxide doing its job oxygen is produced which can then be used by the plant roots - another benefit of using Silver Bullet Roots in your nutrient solution.
So if you had colloidal silver and hydrogen peroxide but no bleach you could achieve the same results and maybe both those products have a decades long shelf life. I have colloidal silver as it is used to trick a plant to grow male pollen sacks to fertilize the same female plant to feminize the plants seeds.

Tap water "Should" already be "Treated" and should not need BLEACH. But, for longer storage you might want to something.
If you don't want to use Bleach, SALT is a very good at keeping water free of Bacteria. You will NEED salt anyway. I use Salt Only in ALL of my 5 Gallon jugs that I fill with Filtered Tap Water. I use only 1 Teaspoon, a real one you eat with, of salt. The water does NOT taste salty and 2 years later that water is FINE to drink and tastes GOOD. Nothing growing in it. People think I'm nuts. The ones "brave" enough to have tasted my stored water are believers though. :~) P.S. I have special jugs just for "me" stored as well. In those I use a good Himalayan Black Salt. It is Pink Salt that has SULFUR in it. It smells and tastes like Rotten Eggs (If used while cooking that smell and taste goes away.), just like the well water I grew up on. I like the Taste and feel that the Sulfur adds to the preservation. P.S.S. You CAN use the amount of Bleach he advises and be FINE drinking it. Unless you have some allergy to Bleach.

Bleach is a bad idea. It works, but its very hard to find the correct dosis. Too less doesn't work, to much is harmful. In Shtf bleach is not available. Its much easier to buy a small 4 inch dome filter 0.2 micron for 15 bucks and 2 5gl buckets to make a water filter 0.2 micron. Most bacteria can not pass because they are bigger. If you like , you can fill that water in bottles and let them some hours in the sun. UV light will kill the rest. Another idea is to use colloidal silver. 2 small pieces of silver, a wire and a laptop power supply or a very small solar panel will work. Much better than bleach.

Store bought water is clean and is already perfectly rationed. it will last for year in the garage and take up minimal space. I have a stack of 50 cases that takes up less space than 1 55 gallon drum. Its also easier to use up the cases of water and cycle thru it. Think about this, a 32 pack of 16.9oz water cost about $5 and has about 4 gallons of water. The cheapest 5 gallon jug on amazon cost $15. My goal is to get to about 100 cases. I just stack them along the wall of my garage and they dont take up much space.

    • @cptjockitch
      @cptjockitch 2 роки тому +1

youll save more water by buying bottled water. How much water will be wasted everytime you pump water from the icb tote or 55 gallon drum into a cup? When people see 4 large 55 gallon drums the mind will tell them they have enough water for a few years and a lot will be waisted. With bottled water you give each person 4-5 per day and thats it. How do you quickly move 55 gallon drums? i can throw 50 cases of water into my truck faster than i can move a 55 gallon drum. if someone touches the drum pump with dirty hands the entire drum is infected and can also infect the other drums if you use the same pump. The bottled water will still be clean. youll run out of 4 full drums of water faster than you would 100 cases of water because of the human mind. The water in the drums will be spilled and or infected faster. This is what happened in England in the 1800s when the community well was infected with disease. I would feel safer with 5 gallon jugs to store backup drinking water but they are expensive. its about $20 for a good 5 gallon jug and i can buy 4 cases of water with that and it has about 16 gallons of drinking water.
