How to use household bleach for water disinfection

- This is a good technique to keep in mind in case of a SHTF scenario comes. Sodium hypochlorite is the active ingredient in household bleach. Enjoy!
Water disinfection means the removal, deactivation or killing of pathogenic microorganisms. Microorganisms are destroyed or deactivated, resulting in termination of growth and reproduction. When microorganisms are not removed from drinking water, drinking water usage will cause people to fall ill.
1-For (CLEAR) water use 2 drops of bleach per U.S. quart or liter (32 ounces) of water.
2-Mix or stir the bleach with the water (shake bottle).
3-For (CLEAR) water, Let the mixture stand for a half hour (30 minutes) before drinking.
4-For (CLOUDY) water prefilter the water with a bandana or some other type of cloth, coffee filter, etc. If the water is still cloudy or discolored and there's no other source - double everything (the amount of drops and time).
Note: The water should have a slight bleach smell. If not, repeat and wait another 15 minutes. The treated water can then be made palatable by pouring it between clean containers several times.
Don't forget the shelf life of bleach is about a year so replace your bleach at least annually.

After agitating the bleach you turn the bottle upside down and unscrew the cap alittle to let the treated water in and around the threads of the bottle. If the water was bad when it went in the bottle then there will be nasties around the top that need to be treated also.

I prefer to place to bottle about 30 yds away, and blow the cap off of the bottle with my AR-15.
Your comment reminds me of this case where a couple kids killed one of the kid's family members. One of the kids was drinking soda out of a bottle. He screwed on the lid and threw it in a river. The detectives found some weeks later and were able to get his DNA from the threads of the cap and bottle. This sounds crazy, but it really happened. There is a whole video about it here on UA-cam, with interviews with the detectives and scientists. edit: I remember the details now... They put the murder weapon and other stuff all in a bag and threw it in the river. The cops got tipped off on that and when they found the bag, it had the bottle inside.
My Biology teacher (30+ yrs ago) taught us (the camping club she sponsored) this trick to make any stream water safe. All thes new fangled water purifiers which are in the hundreds of dollars take up a lot more backpack space. @@Raythe don't compare the effectiveness of chemical treatment with that of a filter. Filters remove solid residue and don't add undesirable flavours, but they won't do anything about viruses and other small hazardous agents. Best is combining both as this video explains.

We did this procedure in the Army with our purification tablets, but we loosened the cap to let some water into the treads. Very good video, thanks and you take care.
Basic knowledge of the past folks. I was taught this as a child back in the 60s. 2 tablespoon of bleach per gallon, mix and let sit for a couple hours. Safe to drink and most of the odor will be evaporated.
When I was raised parents believed that a man should be able to do everything, and if not be able to figure it out. Sewing, cooking, farming, first aid, setting bones, closing wounds, cleaning, fishing, hunting, not getting lost, working hard, reading, finding water, and more.
I was raised in the 50's and 60's also. My father was a career military officer and I was into scouting before I finally had to decide between scouts and sports. Back then I really loved camping and my friend and I would take off on our bikes to Hickory Run State Park in Pa. We'd take our fishing poles along with a canteen and camp knife. We'd live off the land so to speak for days at a time. Obviously this was during the summer. I taught my sons the same skills and they've been passing ,it on to the grands. Things were so much better then. These days a lot of the millennials have very few of the skills that we took for granted.

He just said two drops per quart there's four quarts in a gallon if there's four quarts in a gallon 2 * 4 is 8 so common sense dictates 8 drops per gallon 2 tablespoons will probably poison you
I am a pigeon-racer from Belgium and i use it to desinfect the water i give to my pigeons.I use 1 ml on 1liter water .Keeps away a lot of nasty diseases.I learned this from my grandfather back in the sixties.
Great and simple video! A note about fragranced bleach....if that's all you can find and you have a little unfragranced bleach keep in mind that A TINY AMOUNT OF BLEACH PURIFIES A LOOOOOOOOOOT OF WATER. Use the fragranced bleach for a household cleaner (surfaces, knobs, et al) and mix at 1/2 cup of bleach per gallon. ---IMPORTANT--- when you wash a surface with thie bleach mixture, do not wipe off. Let it sit for at least 5 minutes before wiping off excess water. It takes time for the bad guys to die......envision in your mind that they are dying slowly and painfully. :-) Then wipe off.

Knew this works but nice to see the dosage rate for small water quantities. It can't be stressed enough to remove the original label from your dropper. Glad you did it although it wasn't mentioned. There are far too many instances of folks getting household products mixed up because the are in similar containers. Drops of chlorine in you eyes from container thought to be eye drops would be devastating!

Very important to remember to remove the original label and relabel , as you did , so someone doesn't accidently put bleach in their eye . I once saw a guy take several large gulps of gasoline out of a Gator Aid bottle . He ran around in circles for five minutes and then fell down . He wasn't dead , I think he ran out of gas !

I really like my Sawyer filter, but in certain areas with springs and/or high quality water I love the ease of bleach. A small dropper weighs nothing and it's a great backup.

Off topic: I went to the local grocery store a few days ago and as a result of over 45 years of smoking, I occasionally get a dry "smoker's hack". Well, a small bout hit me at the store and being trained in precautions after working 15 years as a CNA, covered my mouth using my shoulder/upper arm.
After only about 5-6 coughs, I looked around and the reaction on people's faces was, IMO, comically horrified. I swear I probably would have gotten a calmer response if I had pulled out an AK and began open firing.

I've used Clorox for decades to purify water while camping. 2 drops per liter, mix, wait 20 minutes. Oh, he just said that. Depending on water quality. How's your bleach supply?
What I learnt today:
i) Don't stir water in a bottle. Instead, "agitate" it. 😛
ii) Beard can be used a pre-filter for water mixed with visible impurities.

Real bad idea if you ask me. Vision impaired, reach for visine. Put bleach in eyes. There are many other dropper dispensers magnitudes safer to use.
Be sure to rinse the remaining visine out completely. It’s a very strong purgative if ingested.
MAKE SURE YOU RE-LABEL THE BOTTLE! (don't ask me how I know this).The Visine bottle works well though.
For the preppers... Poolshock is a good source of highly concentrated sodium hypochlorite, 5 pounds will purify 20 years of drinking water (from rain or ground water) for a family of four.
This video is what's called "just in time delivery"! I was just wondering today, after buying bleach incase the water needs treated and needed to know the ratio. Perfect timing. Perhaps my phone actually picks up on my thoughts. Haha
I remember living on the farm when I was a kid in the late 1940's we had well water, Dad told me the well was 24 feet deep and it was 14 feet wide, I have no Idea where got Idea, but when the well would run over and stop running after a heavy rain, he poured a gallon of bleach in well it set for 3 days, with him pumping water for 2 or 3 hours and putting into back into the well, then he took a sample of water to town to have it tested to be safe or not.
I recall something about that. My grandparents had a well. They would know its depth and width because they dug it themselves.

The extremely diluted amount of bleach won't really cause any damage to plastic, if you're worried about plastic in general the amount of estrogenic compounds you get from plastic water bottles is frankly minimal when you take into account just how much plastic we come in contact with every day of our lives.

Household bleach is not a good choice for water sanitization. Especially if you're buying the cheap stuff. And even more so if you're buying cheap bleach from the dollar store. The reason being is that household bleach has a finite shelf life of only about a year. And if you buy it from the dollar store it's probably old already, that's why it's in the dollar store. The better option is to buy 73% Calcium Hypochlrite granules. This can be purchased at any pool supply store in 1 lb bags for about $6. One 1 lb bag will sanitize 10,000 gallons of water and has an indefinite shelf life when stored properly. According to the U.S. Army "Sanitary Control and Survielllance of Field Water Supplies" manual(TB MED577)a bleach/sanitizing solution can be made by mixing 2 tbs Calcium Hypochlorite granules with 3 cups water and using this solution to sanitize water for drinking by adding 8 drops per gallon and letting it sit for 30 minutes before drinking. Plus having a couple bags on hand in case the SHTF you'll have all the drinking water you'll ever need andyou'll also be able to help countless people have safe drinking water making you a valuble asset to a group. You'll also have the option of using it for barter or trade as people will be needing safe drinking water. Just imagine how valuble just 2 tbs could be worth in a SHTF situation. 2 tbs is enough to sanitize 1,875 gallons of water. Imagine how valuble that would be to someone without a way to make water safe to drink. Obviously helping those in need is the right thing to do and for a small investment for several bags or even a 5 lb container you could be that valuble asset making you the person that everyone is willing to help in any way they can. Providing safe drinking water would probably get you fed or sheltered, fueled, who knows what else. On the other hand there's always going to be someone who's a bad, evil or untrustworthy person that you don't want around or in your group/clan and doesn't deserve the free help, but will probaly have something of value to trade or barter. And in such a situation safe drinking water will be VERY valuble. So a mere 2 tbs of granules could be a VERY valule trade item.

In real SHTF scenarios, someone will just rob you of the stuff once people know you have it, especially after you tell someone how to use it properly. What makes a person truly valuable and indispensable is knowing hard to learn truly helpful skills - like being a doctor, or being a welder, for example.

You are right on many levels, but you need to be super careful how you store, meant for swimming pool, products. I ignorantly stored a very small bag of pool chemical,swapped into,
poured into a plastic jug, part way, with room enough to stuff a couple small plastic measuring spoons. It all went to chlorine gas which is SO dangerous, it can be deadly. I had it in a cabinet, for a year, and I began smelling chlorine.
I had to get rid of it, and the potency of the gas while getting rid of it, was intense. I won't say where
I dumped it, but after, dumping the small pile, outside, and time for gas to dissipate, I slowly dissolved it with water.
It actually slightly melted the jug, and discolored the measuring spoons.
Be careful with pool chemicals. I do not store any after that. What I did store, I had for water sterilization. But until I get a better grasp on pool chemicals, I will stick to
bottled bleach.
I know you made this video a few years ago but I am grateful for this information because the city we live in messed with their water system and we keep getting sick from our tap water. I am going to try this and see if it helps at all.

I remember my folk's doing this to our water when we were on a cattle drive or hunting trip in the mountains. We wouldn't be able to carry water with us except for what we could carry in our canteens on our horses.
But I wasn't sure exactly much bleach to put in.

I've run into too many people who say things like: "real men don't have to worry about the water", "I only drink from really clear untouched steams" - Giardia can really ruin a trip - and at least a week to recover.
When a "real man" comes down with amoebic dysentery - bilharzia / snail fever and a variety of other illnesses caused from unclean water , the real man will get his act together .
I came down with amoebic dysentery in SE Asia and lost 12 pounds of body weight in 2 weeks . After several doses of antibiotics , it took 6 weeks to totally recover .
Treat that water - boil it and treat it again . ATB

I have had giardia. Not a lot of fun. Took me a six month period to FULLY recover from it, and I was younger and healthier, then. ALWAYS treat water you plan to drink, even if it looks clear and clean, fresh from a mountain stream, or lake.

This was extremely helpful. I just bought a vietnam era 36 gallon lyster(lister) bag so I worked out the bleach to water ratio to be 1 1/2tsp for a full 36 gallons of clear water or 2-3tsp for cloudy water
Also check that the clorox bottle says "disinfectant", not all do say that.

I also carry a pill bottle full of citric acid. after I wait the 30 min (clear) hour (cloudy) I add a quarter of a teaspoon of the citric acid and you will not taste the bleach in the water if you are like me with sensitive pallet. as well little vit c never hurts lol great info man stay safe

Good one! Just a note about brown coffee filters, they leave an unsavoury taste !!, fabric is better than processed paper.
very nice video. I use to use liquid bleach to purify water but liquid bleach is only good for one year but tablets are good for much longer periods. Lets hope none of us ever have to use this method because we have to. It is a useful way to purify water, but not my first choice.
I’m am so happy i came across your channel!! Because I used a humidifier and I was wondering if I could put a couple drops of bleach in the water to keep the water from getting smiley. I have noticed it only takes two to three days for the water to start getting smiley. And figured if they can add bleach to swimming pools it should be okay to add a little to my humidifier to cut down on bacteria 🦠 I’m so thankful for you. May God blessed you always.

I like the use of the empty Visine bottle. I have a couple that are not empty yet, but will keep one and label it, as you have shown. Maybe you could do a video showing the results of using those suggested mediums of filtration, starting off with obvious dirty and cloudy water. I hesitate to give details because of the times, we live in, but I often practice, filtering water from one source in particular, through old but clean T-shirts and worn flannel shirts, and other worn cloth. Practicing these things, these processes, opens up your mind to a whole bunch of awareness. 5 gallon buckets are good for practice and usage. Keep lids and use lids. Just think about anything that uses a filter, example vacuum cleaners, or your furnace, your AC unit, and so on, revisit those materials, and how they trap particles and dirt. I uses old window screens, AC filter screens, over buckets to keep big stuff out like leaves. When filtering into buckets, I use layers of pasta strainers, with cloth laid into and overlapping the pasta strainers. Good results, for my non drinking purposes. Understanding filtration the gradients of charcoal, stone and sand, as with a rain barrel, is all good basic knowledge to possess!
Great Video Brotha! I carry my bleach in a eyedrop container as well when I go on trips. I only use this style of disinfecting water when its a clearer water source if it's dirty or has an odor I use sawyer filter. I always carry at least 4 ways to disinfect water in my pack though.

Good info! That’s what we did in Boy Scouts! I wonder, have you ever used pool shock to make a working bleach solution? I’ve read about it online but I’ve never actually tried it. It’s a good way to have a long term supply of bleach.

Simple straight forward, good info to know , cone coffee filters may work best. Read the scroll below ,the bottle cap needs to have agitated bleach water poured in to it prior to sitting for one half hour or more.

A 2 pack of the 1 Micron 4"x8" Singed Polyester Felt Filter Bag PESP3S size 3 cost $4.95 on Amazon. It's a bag that filters water at 1 micron and can be reused as much as a person wants. Mark one side as clean and the other as dirty. Then after it dries you can turn it inside out and shake a lot of the debre it caught from it. Later at home wash it. When dry the bag has a slow flow threw it , after it gets wet it has a fast flow. They come in all different micron filtering sizes. I like them as a pre filter for swamp water and all the stuff that's in it.

MOONSKIN1976 unless you are allergic like me and it gives you the runs after a couple days, chlorinated water is in the tap, it’s safe enough to ensure viruses don’t get you!

I know I am allergic to intervenous iodine, finding out when I was getting a CT scan done of my back and they wanted to use dye for it. Is that the same, do you think, as drinking a tiny bit for disinfectant purposes? Stomach acid kills so much stuff that I’m curious if it would have the same affect. How did you find out you were allergic to it - did you have it injected as well or did you drink it or what?

Side note, I would not use a empty Visine bottle for this unless you rinse it and the lid out again and again. Reason is Visine restricts blood vessels. This is how it "gets the red out". If you put 1 drop Visine in that jug it will contract vessels in your stomach causing severe cramps and even death.

actually tho, that 1-2 count is kind of absurd [not particularly aiming at you]. even having 3-4 or 5 is acceptable if really needed to guess. the bottom line of the point is to have an approx idea of about how much to use to have enough to actually sanitize without being harmful, which harmful is surprisingly harder than a person might imagine. I use it my my SHTF scenarios of readied water stored properly and having enough bleach in there to keep it sanitary and safe.

Could you theoretically do this with pool shock? Not chlorine tablets but the quick acting stuff. From what I understand the chlorine would be influenced by the air and sun and drawn out as chlorine gas.

I have 2 gallons of Walmart generic Pool Bleach with sells for $3.65 a gallon, it is a 10% chlorine solution. Remember that chlorine bleach has a 6 to 12 month shelf life before it becomes inert. Water purification tablets or solid pool chlorine tablets are better to store for long term prepping. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.
