I've stored water in a closet modified with wood shelves in the 1 gallon jugs like the Crystal Geyser brand etc for years with no leaks and no problems. Oldest rotated out and drank was 6 years old. No bad taste. No issues.
Yes, Crystal Geyser does not leak, even years in…Kroger, Target, Arrowhead 1 gallon and 2 .5 gallon with spout do leak after 1-2 years. Crystal Geyser from Costco stays perfect in my experience also!
Don't allow ANY plastic containers to rest on concrete for a long period of time. Even heavy-duty plastic like laundry detergent bottles will fail and leak. Plastic and concrete create a condition similar to electrolysis, just as aluminum and steel are incompatible over the long haul. Separate the plastic from the concrete with plywood, OSB, etc.
I looked it up and the FDA does not require expiration dates as water can be stored indefinitely in a proper container and cool environment. The expiration dates on the water bottles are for plastic container degradation into the water. Not a hater just trying to inform. I learned a couple things from this episode. Thank you.
The expiration is on the taste of the water. It starts to taste stale after a certain period of time. The alkaline drops can help extend that period a little longer. But it is still safe to drink, even when it tastes stale. 👍
@@AbbottsAtHome ok thank you for clearing that up. As I said I learn from your channel info. Hope we don't need some of it though. Lol. Have a nice day.
Great presentation especially without loud music. One other thing to remember is that many homes outside of the cities have septic mounds which need electric to operate the pumps.
Interesting comment. I have a septic tank that doesn't require electricity. So, it's never an issue. How does a power loss effect your septic tank? How long can it go without power before it's a problem. Just curious. :)
@@AbbottsAtHome Thanks for the reply. I can only say that usually you have 2 buried to separate solids and move the liquid along to a buried leach field. In the recent decades many fields are not good material for draining and they raise it on a mound layered with special earth. There is an alarm setup if the pump doesn't work and a tank is too high. Not even going to guess on the time it takes to fill. I am sure someone else can describe it better. Have a great week.
I have an unused shower where I store my water. it's dark and whatever leaks is harmless. I label EVERYTHING with a Brother computer-attached label printer ($99). The labels stick well on metal lids, plastic and glass, and peel right off when they aren't needed. They work well in the freezer too. Generic spools of label tape work perfectly.
It's still best to have a water filter straw, the Berkey, or something similar filter the water after a certain amount of time, probably about a year, or right away, that won't hurt either. That way you can filter out the plastics, and any other possible things in the water, such as bacteria or viruses
I like the idea of pouring it through a water filter before drinking stored water, mainly for taste. But, if you have bacteria and/or viruses in stored water, the container or the water wasn't clean before it was sealed.
I do something similar in prepping the containers, but I add a teaspoon on bleach to the containers after they are filled with water. I change them out every 6 months on a 3-month rotation (1/2 the containers every 3 months). I've tried drinking the water at 6 months to see if I have any reaction to it; I put it in a smaller 1l bottle and shake it up to get it aerated which reduces the Cl concentration to 'unnoticeable' (as I call it). No issues with it so far. I keep a three week supply and use 2.5 gallon containers because (as you pointed out) those bigger ones are really heavy when full.
Quite sure its not safe . Its allowed to use 0,004g bleach pr litre in drinkingwater, but its not common to use more than 0,0005 to 0,001 pr litre, a teaspoon contains 5,000 g. If your water is not safe and clean its off course more expensive but then more safe to use a coalfilter. But science are in doubt if bleach at all is safe to the human body

@@billyandrew I installed 🪛 a 200 liters solar ☀️ boiler ⚗️ to sterilize the stored water before using it. Every 2 days I pump the sterilized water to another storage tank so I keep the water moving. Everything is energized with photovoltaic energy.
I buy the refrigerated Gold Peak iced tea (unsweetened) in the gallon sized containers. They are heavy plastic and lasts for a VERY long time. Also use water bob's, make sure you have a secondary way to shower as the water Bob fills the tub. Have a couple Brita's (thrift store, but new carbon filters) to get rid of the bleach smell. I use only fresh water, as our community water is fine, I rotate it every 6 mos. If your water taste stale, aerate it to restore fresh taste,it usually only lacks oxygen in it. Pour from glass to glass to get air in or use a fish tank bubbler,, specifically for that purpose. I do have a few Aquatainers, 7 gallon cube containers for camping with spigots too, makes aerating easy. Just store off cement floor and in a trash compactor bag (super heavy thick bags!) in a bin or tote if it leaks. It doesn't damage anything and you get to keep the water if it leaks for laundry or toilet flushing. Bathing I use a 3 ring blow up pool, a little bath stool, a 5 bucket for hot water (think Japanese bath) and a 32oz cup for rinsing. Use a little hydrogen peroxide (in non-bleached water only!) in the hot water for germ killing. 2- 2.5 gallons of cool water to 1.5- 2 gallons hot water and some hydrogen peroxide, a 5 gallons? 1/8 cup hydrogen peroxide or less, depending on how long you've bated and how dirty you are. In between use like a Halloween 1 gallon bucket, hot water a little bit of baby bath soap and hydrogen peroxide, 1tbsp or so. and use a wash cloth. Think Old West wash downs. I find it more economical and a lot easier to just store cases of bottle water. We keep 25 cases of btl water on hand for everyday drinking, that's around 62 gallons for my wife and me , and it's always in rotation, I never let it get below 20 cases., and we have been at emergency status many times with the newer more powerful storms knocking out things. The highest I've paid for water has been averaging $3.49 per case 32 btl, that' $87.00 dollars versus all the containers, (which are plastic to.) Your video is very informative and helpful.

8 drops (1/8 of a teaspoon) of 6% chlorine bleach per gallon per EPA guidelines. You can also use 1 cup (8 ounces) of 3% hydrogen peroxide per gallon instead. Also, water weighs 8.34 pounds per gallon, so those 6 gallon containers are 50 pounds each plus whatever the containers weigh, so probably in the neighborhood of 53 pounds.
I have just checked google gemini, and it says that either EPA or WHO and I'm sorry, they dont at all recommend any kind of bleach in drinkingwater. Maybe they did years ago.

Water is a HEAVY element (1 litre [appx 33.83 fl oz] = 1 Kg [appx 2.2 lb]. So if you have 20 x 20litre water containers sitting up on a shelf, that is a combined weight of 400kg [appx 882lbs] sitting up on the shelf. So, before doing so, just imagine the weight of a Harley Davidson Road Glide sitting up on that shelf? If you reckon the shelf is strong enough to handle that kind of weight, then all good. If not, then you'd better install extra strong shelving, bracing, support columns, etc, if you don't want to eventually hear a great big crashing noise and be left a big mopping up task.

Excellent video, personally I'd run my pool water through a homemade filter. Just to decrease the chemicals going into the tank. I'd be afraid it might erode the internals of the toliet. (Being extra safe). This inspired me to get a few jugs. I have filters, ways to boil water, but none stocked. I think I'll keep some more bottles on hand to cycle out
Good tips. If you pour pool water directly into tank, that chlorine can't get to the parts in the tank. But, if you want to keep it in the tank, I love your filter idea!

I fill 60 or so 3 liter bottles at a clean water stream coming from a mountain nearby. I keep them under the house for about 2 months without any additives. If someone leaves the door open early sun shines on them. I use around 3 liters for drinking and cooking per day. I don't notice it getting stale. Even when I was away for 7 months it tasted fine. I make sure the bottles are totally dry before storing them for the next fill.
I use some big cat plastic litter containers too. Look up and write down Clorox disinfecting instructions in case you have no Internet. Also use on tap water before storing. Get some kind of filter in case you have to Find water. Use fresh Clorox. It de concentrates evaporates over time reducing strength. Chlorine will penetrate containers over time.

I have some of those 6 gal jugs. Have had them probably 5 yrs. Had one of them spring a leak after about a year. Fortunately, it was in the garage. I didn't know you're not supposed to store these jugs directly on a concrete floor.
I didn’t know about the concrete issue until someone commented about it on this video. I’ve started putting cardboard boxes under mine. Hopefully they’ll last a lot longer than 5 years. 🤞
I use potassium permanganate. Aquarium stores use it too, in order to kill off everything in the tanks, when cleaning, then a simple rinse, afterwards. It's, thankfully, harmless to humans, in small quantities.
Hello and thank you for the video. I followed another videos directions on filling a 55 gallon opaque drum for my garage. It was a brand new barrel and I cleaned it out with soapy water and rinsed it out very well. The water came from my water hose. Do I really need to empty out my drum, re-clean, sanitize with bleach, and re-fill my drum with water, or should i be safe having "missed the bleach step"?

When things are so bad that you resort to emergency water for a period, there might not be any trash pick up , so the best thing to do is to bury it anyway so you don't handle it twice.

Also let's say it can be used how do I start? Wash each container soap and water rinse. Do I splash each container with Bleach? Then add the tap water then add the drops of treatment? Do i have to boil tge water first or can it go straight from the tap? Or should i just buy distilled water instead? Then treat it with drops? The goal is for long term storage for hopefully 2-3 + years if possible. Ill be doing multiple containers want to do it right. Thanks
I don’t really have experience with contaminated water. Maybe someone else will have better tips. But, my first thought is that you need to bottle water that isn’t contaminated.
Good tip! Thanks for sharing
Good tip! Thanks
I wondered what the "why" was behind not storing plastic on concrete. Thank you.
Thank you.
@Pugsy Malone what is electrolysis and why is it dangerous? Thank you.
@@jewelofwisdom8279 it's a very low grade form of electricity which results in the degradation of the materials involved.
I've used milk crates to store the one-gallon jugs. Fits four per crate. They're stackable too.
Good tip! Thanks
Thats a good idea. I use those crates for canned goods. Stackable and movable.
Just the information I was getting ready to search for ! Thank you !

Wouldnt storing the water in glass bottles sealed better than plastic ones?
The fda has no concern over microplasitcs.
@@AbbottsAtHome Water filters will Not remove the Bacterial or Viruses.
Only to a degree, but straws and other filtering systems only last for so many uses.
Spares are a good idea.

I installed 🪛 a 200 liters solar ☀️ boiler ⚗️ to sterilize the stored water before using it.
The water 💦 temperature 🌡️ raises to 📈 208 °F (98 °C) with 5 hours ⌚ of sun 🌞 using mirrors 🪞 below the water heater.
Scoop out water from pool and toss in a sink or keep for toilet flushing.
Good tips! Thanks. 👍

If not, then you'd better install extra strong shelving, bracing, support columns, etc, if you don't want to eventually hear a great big crashing noise and be left a big mopping up task.

but in a emg cash best to also have a number of very hi-grade filters. getting sick when you need water can cause death.
but everybody must have at least 50 gallons of water at home.
months...years? without the sun. aka in a cave. not if the sun died.
you can live weeks without food,
days without water,
about 2 min without air. (most people it is seconds).
all of above = death times. not survival limits.
About 8.34 pounds per gallon of water with .43 psi or so for every foot of stacking height. That's a lot of weight. Plan accordingly.
Thanks for the info. 👍
What is the lil white opening for? (It’s at the top on the jug opposite side of the spout. Just below the handle.) Air vent?
Yes. 👍
Is it supposed to stay closed or?
Only open it if you are pouring water out AND it’s not coming out fast enough. Then put it back in. 👍
Yes while pouring
Even the large 6-gallon containers can fail and leak. I found that out the hard way.
Ms. Abbot, I saw this video today and you made it two years ago. How does it taste now ? Do you want to check ?
I plan on doing it sometime over the next month or two so stick around. I’ve got a lot on my plate right now. 👍
Just uploaded the emergency water taste test video: ua-cam.com/video/Cr6bg7WcFR0/v-deo.html
Is water fresh in the jug for 2 months without adding anything? If not add anything how long does it stay good? I have the same jug and I use it for filtered water that I buy from the water dispenser.
It'll last longer than 2 months. 🙂 I've had bottled water from the store taste fine a year later. If it starts to taste bad when you need to use it you can make it taste better a few different ways. I shared some of them in this follow up video: ua-cam.com/video/Cr6bg7WcFR0/v-deo.htmlsi=IckSgfkDLaecO_u6
Recapture ( for flushing) 😅water when you wash hands etc.
Yep, if we ever move to a house without a pool (I use it for flushing), I'll definitely set up reclamation. Good advice!
I've had those 6 gallon leak
Good to know. How long did it take for it to leak? Was it leaking from the cap or a pinhole? Was it sitting upright? I’d love to hear more details if you have time. 🙏
Isabel it safe to store water bottles on ceramic tile?
I'm not sure if the materials used to make ceramic tile contain enough of the same ingredients as concrete to cause the same reaction. So, I put carboard boxes under my containers, even on tile.
Every prepper I have seen store water on pieces of wood not cardboard
Can you help me please anyone? Hi I have 5 gallon collapsible polypropylene food grade water storage containers. And I have the Aquamira 2 part Chlorine Dioxide treatment.
I'll be using city water from the tap. I have to treat it because in our area it's very contaminated. How do I treat the water prep the gallon containers the right way?
I read the polypropylene breaks down and can't handle chlorine or Bleach?
Can I still use these containers with this aquamira treatment? Will it poison us? Or make the containers leach chemicals?
Can you buy a water filter or purifier that makes your water safe to drink? Or, buy bottled water to put in these thicker, long term containers?
@@AbbottsAtHome thank you
I like your T-shirt!
Thanks! 😊
I’ve heard that you shouldn’t put the ion drops in long term storage because it reacts to the plastic 🤔
Hmm...I can't find anything about this online. The drops come in a plastic container. I think it's fine.

Water doesn’t expire, the plastic store bottles do as they degrade. If I’m a good grade container they will last indefinitely if needed.
Yep, I didn't elaborate on what I meant enough. By expire I mean the taste expires. It gets a stagnate, stale taste after sitting in storage too long. It will smell and sort of taste like cardboard (IMO). So, I choose to replace it to keep it tasting nice. Some people buy aerator to run stale water through to try to get the taste back to normal. 👍
Where did you buy those jugs?
Get a water bob. Designed to fit in a bathtub, holds at least 80 gallons.
Good tip!
What about using Food grade H2o2 or CDS instead of bleach?
Don't use any milk jug or 2 gal Ozarka bottles. They plastic decompose in just a few much.
Yep, They're really not reliable for long. :)
Where can i buy these in IN ?
WalMart usually has similar ones in the camping department. 😊
Time to check the water! 😂
Run, don’t walk. 😉🤓
plus the milk jug ones get mold
Yep, that’s true. You have to be careful to clean them properly before using them for storage. 😊
Buy military water jugs MADE TO TRANSPIRT AND USE POUR WATER there 5 gal anf 3 gal easy to transport and store. Got mine on sale Amazon bought a battery pump for mom gave to my 90 yr mom got used in big power out no well water..those containers are compairable in cost.
Those battery pumps are handy for those heavy containers. Thanks for sharing.
Anyway to have water in an emergency is a good way. Your talking about spending 20.00 on a container just to store 6 gallons of water. If you got the cash good for you. Not everyone does and they say you only have to change out the water every six months. If the water is out and you flush the toliet it could come back into your house if the water sanitation isnt working. You should not use your toliet if you are out of water.
I looked on Amazon & I saw dozens of the 6 gal water containers. Please tell me the name of those blue gray color you bought. I like the ones you have. Thank you for your wonderful video. I am learning from you.
Here's the one I used in the video: amzn.to/3QtsteI
@@AbbottsAtHome Thank you! By chance, have you nostuced if your water jugs have a chemical smell to it? The scepter military water jugs have a horrible chemical spill that haven’t come out, even after 3 years. At this point it might be my spare to my spare water. I can’t imagine drinking it. But, it’s better than having no water. I tried many ways to get rid of the odor. I love the similar size to what I already have. Thank you.
Remember ~ "Military Grade" doesn't mean "better"... it means "lowest bidder".
Gallon jugs in the freezer before a hurricane. It turns your freezer into a giant cooler to keep your food cold. You can drink from them as they melt.
Good idea!!
I've used 2 liters for a long time. I've never had them leak.
It's been TWO years any follow up on the taste & procedure?
I plan on checking it out in the next month or so. Stay tuned. 👍

HELP!! ME PLEASE. I don't have the space or the convenience of putting stored water in my house in one gallon except for outside in a shed or porch soon it will be 90° out due to Summer just around the corner can I store my water in 90° weather? For long periods of time.
Thanks
Sorry, water should be stored in cool, dark places. What about a closet? Maybe someone else can reply with tips. 👍
Really Thanks
I keep 10 of the 5 gal orzarka bottles in the closit
Are there places to buy these products besides Amazon?
Try WalMart or outdoor and sporting goods stores.
Need to make sure it's real bleach. Some "bleach" is not really bleach. Plus, they add other things to it
Any update on this for taste?
Just uploaded the emergency water taste test video: ua-cam.com/video/Cr6bg7WcFR0/v-deo.html
You can use the tub of water for drinking water in emergencies
I would suggest storing water in a water bob in the the bath tub. You can never get the bathtub that clean to drink out of it IMO
Remember, your hot water tank is a storage for water also. So you either have 40 gallons or 50 gallons.
Good tip, thanks!
Man, those water containers are expensive!
Yep, shop around. They can be pricey. Walmart might have a good deal in the camping department. 👍
Not bad if you consider they are what might keep you alive. lol
Did you tastes the water after two years? How was it?
Just uploaded the emergency water taste test video: ua-cam.com/video/Cr6bg7WcFR0/v-deo.html
I’ve had ozarka bottles leak
Don’t use Chlorox brand bleach, it has a soap additive. Use the cheap plain type. You can also use well water disinfectant tablets.
Thanks for sharing
We "can" water in 2-quart glass mason jars.
Good idea!
Very bad idea if the clear glass containers are exposed to any light as it will just breed bacteria.
@@gary860 the sun lite does not create bacteria on property canned foods. Should not create/grow bacteria on water?
I found some real high quality drink jugs that are actually BPA free. I found a very effective at long-term. Water storage as long as you filter your water and no air can get in. Plus, make sure you fill the container all the way up to its absolute maximum capacity until you can't hold another drop. The cleaner your water, you'll notice more bubbles, indicating purity.
How much do each leak plastic into the water?? 🤔😮
The problem with the big containers is the weight.
Yep, they can get heavy. Size down to the weight you can handle. 👍
@@AbbottsAtHome I do, but smaller is hard to find for a reasonable cost, particularly water. Good ones cost as much as the big ones! Getting old (and wimpy) is a challenge.:)

I store water in buckets but go to the water filtering machine to get water in them is this ok ?
What about 18L jugs for a water cooler?
Those are a good option. Nice and big, clean water, doesn't expire for 1 1/2 to 2 years. I'm not so sure how thick the plastic is, since I've never bought one. But, if they're thick enough to last for 5 to 10 years, they'd be great.
