- We’ve heard of tests that are used as traditional measures of longevity. Still, a lesser-known but equally important test that should be factored into longevity and long-term independence is VO2 max. This test measures how well your body uses oxygen during exercise, which ultimately translates into how efficiently your body uses oxygen in daily activities as you age. According to today’s guest, increasing VO2 max can significantly reduce your risk of all-cause mortality.
Today, on the Dhru Purohit Show, Dhru sits down with Dr. Andy Galpin to dive deep into VO2 max and why he believes it is one of the best predictors of longevity. Dr. Galpin breaks down the research behind this test and why it's critical for everyone to know their VO2 max baseline. He also shares why a low VO2 max can cause chronic fatigue, making it challenging to engage in daily activities, and shares his top tips on increasing your VO2 max if you are starting your exercise journey. If you are looking for a deep dive into VO2 Max, this episode is a must-listen.
Andy Galpin is a tenured professor at California State University, Fullerton. He is the Co-Director of the Center for Sport Performance and Founder/Director of the Biochemistry and Molecular Exercise Physiology Laboratory. He is a Human Performance scientist with a PhD in Human Bioenergetics and over 100 peer-reviewed publications and presentations. He is also a Co-founder of Absolute Rest, BioMolecular Athlete, and RAPID Health & Performance.
In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Galpin dive into:
-Why VO2 max is a critical factor in longevity
-What is VO2 max and getting your baseline
-Challenges with daily activities that demonstrate a low VO2 max
-Stimulants and the cycle of fatigue
-The impact of diet on energy
-Are smartwatches accurate in calculating VO2 max
-Methods of testing your VO2 max and guidance on choosing the right test
-Average and optimal VO2X max levels
-Increasing your levels and the impact on longevity
-How to get started in improving your levels
-How often should you test

Here to saves you from lengthy talks-------VO2, or oxygen uptake, refers to the amount of oxygen your body can use during exercise. It's often expressed in terms of VO2 max, which is the maximum rate at which your body can consume oxygen during intense or maximal exercise. This measurement is used as an indicator of cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance. Essentially, the higher your VO2 max, the more oxygen your body can use, and the better your overall aerobic fitness. VO2 max is typically measured in milliliters of oxygen used in one minute per kilogram of body weight (ml/kg/min).
Thanks for this. Distilling the info from skateboarder speech amidst acoustic echo was too much for me. Your explanation saved me a lot of time.
Thanks 💜
Just eat as healthy as you can and get daily exercise and live your life.
Exactly! No need to stress about it
Great interview👍
Great video, ty for covering Longevity ❤
❤loved your information! I am a 76 year old female and love my life training hard!
Thanks guys this is freakin amazing information 💪🏻❤️🥊
Excellent episode🔥👏
If you encourage a large population to increase their VO2 max with vigorous exercise, maybe a third of them will get injuries, arthritis, pain, have accidents, or be discouraged, resulting in no overall health benefit to the population.
Love it🔥👏
Age 62 - VO2Max is 46 based on my time in a mile run. If you run and exercise it should be fine. Again daily or regular is a good thing. Who knew???
Dr Andy always has good things to tell us so we can get healthy. ❤
I’ve been a runner for almost 40 years. I’m 63 but Garmin says my fitness age is 20 with a VO2 of 46. I hope it really is an indicator of health longevity!
I take a beta blocker for a-fib, so my heartrate never goes over 70. But I ride my bike uphill every day. Do I get the benefit of exercise?
Does Sauna increase VO2 Max. My heart rate goes 20 mins in Zones 2,3,4 and 5. And pumps hard for 5-10 mins afterward.
Great advice. However, poor acoustics make this guest hard to listen to. Suggest using a proper mic or Skype certified headset with boom mic. Rapid, pulsed speech coupled with acoustic echo from inappropriate microphone kills intelligibility. Never use a built-in PC mic or speakerphone for recorded video.
You mentioned that the wearables watch overestimate VO2max. I use Fitbit sense. By how many % does it overestimate.
I am 71 and my VO2max is 56
62 and mine is 46 at the moment. I exercise a lot and do a VO2 max session every week.
Where is the epidemiological data where the VO2 max of a population was actually measured and compared to their lifespans?
Why does VO2 max increase longevity? An association without a mechanism doesn't mean much.
Am I missing something? Is it having the highest VO2 Max stops you dying or is it that someone who is on the way out can't possible perform like that?
Where is the comparison between the length of time spent performing arduous exercise versus the length of extra life gained? In other words, why is this worth the time?
New subscriber here. Could we get timestamps?
I'm 63...may be to late for me. 😀😀 How can I do this. I have sciactica and I can't run or jump?
I am 65 and feel like I am made out of spare parts most days with all my aches and pains. Work around limitations. Anything that you can do vigorously that gets your heart rate up high enough (medicine ball throws, rowing machine, etc). Maybe a circuit of movements to stop muscle fatigue limiting heart rate stimulus.
Omg ….explain what Vo2 max is and blah blah blah blah.. explain exactly what it is .. then say how to get it!!! I’m out will look it up somewhere else
The authors of the discussed study admit that they can't distinguish reverse causation: "The degree to which high CRF preselects patients with lower mortality vs causes a reduction in mortality is not discernible from our study."
my mom has diabetes and she is almost 90..
Death certificates don't say "low VO2 max" as the cause of death. What were less fit people actually dying of, and why isn't that mentioned?
People need to stop being LAZY.
God preserves - science tries!!
Running makes me poop it is
💖😘😍🥰😍😘💖
This is confirmation bias among true believers in exercise is everything.
Life is in the God ' s hand, but life span is ur hand and how u live.
Jesus christ peace be upon him was the prophet of God. How a man can be the son of God. God has wife?
Only God knows how long a person lives… He is the one who gives life,… and His the one who sets the how long you sleep to eternity….the most importance is to receive Jesus Christ the Son of the Living God in to your heart and life..Amen
Yes of course a relationship with God and the son Yahushua is the MOST important… stop pretending like the things you put in your body arnt going to affect your fleshly body. This body is temporary and weak. Don’t use God as an excuse to not take care of your body. This video isn’t about God. Amen

Nah. You have a brain, use it
