2024 Subaru Solterra Review | Is It The Electric Forester You Asked For? Or An Electric Uh-Oh?

  • Subie's first EV is a bit of a head scratcher to be honest. It's priced well, the range is "OK" and charging speeds aren't far off the average for comparably priced EVs... On the other hand it lacks any kind of "wow" factor, aside from the ground clearance. Other EVs will charge faster, go further, accelerate quicker, etc. but few will have as much off road capability as the Subaru aside from Hummers and Rivians at the moment. But then we have the range. The Solterra might have the clearance and the traction to tackle the "back of beyond" but it lacks the range to get back from the back of beyond. You know, unless you could charge in the wilderness which seems unlikely.

They aren’t painted because that’s how it is on every Subaru for a more rugged look that is capable of “off road*” type conditions. bZ4X has painted fenders because the target audience 🎯 is different. bZ4X gives a more stylish sleek look while Solterra (Latin for sun and moon) signifies a more outdoorsy type look. Sure you may not like the look, but what’s the vehicle capable of? That’s what matters

This is the kind of vehicle that the Alex on Autos/Auto Buyers Guide perspective/philosophy lends itself really well to, and the pragmatism argument is well taken. I think this was a great review in terms of both asserting your own position/argument on the car with conviction as well as recognizing the differences in the way the majority of the general buying public is looking at EV’s

I leased the 2024 base model 3 weeks ago, my credit score was close to fair. 36 months, 12000 miles, $350 a month plus $2500 down payment. I bought a 3 year maintenance package for a very cheap $750. So I planned 3 years of zero problems with the car. I was actually going to buy the Toyota Ev model but it was more expensive. I looked at them both at the dealership and they were similar vehicles. I didn't want to overpay, the car meets all my expectations for city use. As a former Mercedes E series user, it is definitely more comfortable than the Mercedes with a more comfortable seating position. The vehicle's suspension is quiet and absorbs bumps on the road very well. The four-wheel drive system allows you to control the vehicle very safely. The vehicle has a charging cable for home with 120V output. I have used the charging station 1 time so far. When I come home from work, I plug it in and it charges around 15-20% in the morning, which is enough for me for daily use. Subaru also gives $400 charging station credit. As a result, it has been more than enough for me to travel from work to home, from school to the market on weekends in city life. I am very satisfied.

The all black interior would make me feel like I'm driving around inside a coal mine. The instrument cluster is form over function for perhaps the most critical interface in a vehicle. The only reason to have one of these in your driveway is because it has one of the cheapest leases in the USA. Shiny black plastics are always bad to actually live with. To purchase one would be a terrible financial idea since it going to depreciate like a Geo Metro.

Thanks for bringing up the vampire drain. This is actually something I feel gets glossed over with EV's. I have an older Model S and I exclusively use public chargers. The 2 to 5% I lose every night isn't trivial. Something maybe worth mentioning is the Solterra having a heat pump, not too many EV's outside of Tesla have these.

I own a Subaru Outback XT and a Tesla Model Y. My Subaru dealer has tried so hard to sell me a Soltera and I want to like it but the range, efficiency and charging speeds are a non starter. You forgot one more factor, you can get a Tesla model Y for 3-5k less in inventory at the end of the quarter. We just bought our Model Y Dual Motor LR for 44.6k plus we got 12.5k in tax credits because we live in Colorado, so we paid 32k! We are seeing efficiency of 260-270 kWh/mile. Plus we got 2 years of free supercharging since we traded in our Model 3. We have already driven across the entire state to go skiing and the Tesla is just so easy. The charging is ridiculously fast. It’s so fast at charging that we almost can’t get back to the car before it hits 100% and we were aiming for aiming for 80-90%. At the end of the day, I can’t justify any other brand until they come down in price. I also love not having to haggle. I watch inventory until I see the price I want and reserve. Done!

That digital gauge cluster is one of the worst design ever, Toyota needs to get rid of it, just offer a regular one as well as regular round steering wheel. Also, that infotainment screen with climate controls and center console is asymmetrical, which is eyesore. Also, get rid of that black plastic cladding around the headlights. I drove a Solterra for 6 days. I could handle the plastic molding on the body, the piano black interior and the low range because it worked well enough as a city car. The thing that was a absolute deal breaker was the digital gauge cluster. You either have to lower your seat to the bottom and move the steering wheel all the way up or force the wheel to almost kiss your legs and move your seat forward and up - maybe it doesn't work for 6' with long torsos. The drive quality is great for putting passengers to sleep - buttery smooth. The interior design choices are just facepalm.

I really liked test driving the 2023 Solterra. I really wanted to like it, but the strange lack of a glove box, mixed with the slow charge speeds and lower range are conflicting. The idea behind the car is one designed for going off the beaten path. So they gave us one that can’t go very far and would take much longer than the competition to charge to get to a destination.
I still see the Solterra as a product great for people living in super muddy and/or snowy regions that would use it to putt around town comfortably. Where EV’s are most prominent, Southern California, it doesn’t make sense to buy one in a climate where the off-road capability isn’t really necessary.

If you are talking about efficiency, combined hgwy+city in SUV category. Only Tesla Model Y(AWD, Long Range AWD, RWD) gets more Le/km. If you are looking at whole bev category then only Lucid air touring and pure, Ioniq 6, Model Y and 3 are the only ones more efficient than this/bz4x. They match Model S, EV6, Bolt EV and EUV. It still more efficient than ID4, Ioniq 5, Model X, Mach E and everything from BMW and Audi.

Look at any real world test and this falls massively behind the claimed efficiency and range, same with charging, this car never achieves even close to what it claims it can. In basically every real world test the ID.4, IONIQ 5 and others out preform it in terms of efficiency (and basically everything else) by a wide margin.

Subaru is strange. They cannot sell this car and have the highest inventory backlog of 82 days of product on the lots across America right now with only 2092 for sale. Meanwhile the Legacy, which they plan to discontinue permanently, has a 58 day supply and is the lowest inventory backlog with 3498 for sale. Not sure Subaru really has a handle on what America wants right now. The fact this is in the Subaru image of offroad, and there are no offroad chargers, with a range of only 220 miles - you can only go about 30 miles offroad before you have to return to civilization to charge (assuming you have to drive 70 miles to get to the offroad portion). Not very practical for off road use.

And a Prius can go almost 500 miles on a full tank, in my 30 miles round trip commute I would only gas up every 4 weeks+, I only work 3 days a week in the office. If I want to go even cheaper I can get a Corolla Hybrid LE at $27K OTD.

There’s just no other way to slice it, the Solterra is not a good road trip vehicle. The poor range and slow charging speed limits its versatility. However, it is good as a second car for commuters and running errands and with those lease rates, makes this worth considering. The AWD system, high ground clearance, and suspension tuning is ideal for Northern climates that deal with snow and potholes.

Doug Demuro got this one right: one of the worst new cars for 2024. This car is loaded with compromises: No glove compartment. A steering wheel that has to live in your lap. No front trunk. Three separate cooling systems that are not integrated. A storage area with a window that cuts into usable storage (and no spare tire). Cheap and tacky upholstery. A very distant speedometer with tiny fonts. A battery that is purposely hamstringed to give the driver an artificial impression of longevity. Slow on board charging on 220. Expensive to buy with no Federal incentives. Inefficient heat pump that cannot function below 14 degrees... so as a result Winter range is halved. I think ANYONE who is a Toyota loyalist and with a brain deficiency should indeed buy this car. And, as a Subaru loyalist I have to say that this is just a Toyota that is sold at Subaru dealerships.

@@normt430 I agree, for an around-the-town car, 23000 dollars could be a good deal for some. However, for me this would be a bad deal, for I intend to be driving about 5000 miles per year on road trips. This would not be feasible in this car. Subaru, supposedly will be coming out with their own line of EVs; and hopefully will solve the mechanical shortcomings such as poor thermal efficiency during the winter, which for me is critical in a climate that regularly gets down below zero. That would interfere even with modest road trips to the big city for me. Disgust with Musk is preventing me from buying a Tesla, which unfortunately is a much better car for my climate than for southern states (I do miss the Los Angeles of the 1950s, my early childhood home).

It is also the view of Consumer Reports, that the charging is subpar. However, in Toyota's defense, one of the reasons to have abysmally slow charging is to protect and prolong the battery. If the cooling system for the battery is inadequate, it is sensible to limit charging speeds.
