I tried doing this with Z series desktops, but they had a proprietary heatsink mount point layout. I'm glad that some of the older enterprise level PCs (Elitedesk and Prodesk 800 G1, G2, and G3) have standard LGA heatsink mount points.
Yea, it's kind of interesting because the older 8000 series has a different orientation mobo which does not align with standard ATX case. But, newer models though. I bet HP got a better deal on parts by deciding to go with ATX standard.

I actually did this with my HP Elite Desk 800 GI SFF I ran into a problem with the Intel Heatsink not fitting on my board so I had to use the old heatsink, to get it to stay onto the motherboard due to it not having the support from the case anymore, I had to go to Wal-Mart and buy machine screws 1/2 inch and attached the washers to the back of the board this remedied the issue perfectly! Although it did cause quite a bit of frustration. Also had a hard time figuring out where the front connectors go onto the board! If you do this definitely take your time! I had never worked with computer parts in this way and managed to get everything working with patience and double checking everything before going ahead. Overall I am extremely pleased to have upgraded my computer in this way, it ended up being way cheaper than I exected and definitely worth trying. Thanks for the help!

For the USB and audio error I plugged the yellow USB in and actually used the 3.0 USB and 2 hubs. No new power supply needed and did it the same way in the video with double sided tape additionally. Biggest problem is the length of the cables. I was able to disassemble the original switch on compartment and use the original LEDs and switch in the aftermarket case. I just transferred my HP Elitedesk 800 G1 to an old HP Pavilion case, added a gtx 1650 and I'm playing Forespoken right now. Extra things I had to do: 1.) Remove the power switch and lights from the front cover button, insert into the from cover of the Pavilion. 2.) To use my Elite desk cooling fan, I had to find some nuts that fit on the bolts in the fan too attach it to the mother board. The Elit desk mother does not have built in nuts. The fan bolts into the case. It ain't pretty but works like a champ.
Awesome video! I just started fixing up, upgrading and selling some OEM pc's lately, but I have been buying Lenovo's and they have power limits on the PCIe ports. So that limits the types of GPU's I've been able to put in them. I'm guessing the HP Elitedesk 800 doesn't have that kind of a power limit on the motherboard, so the only thing you need is a new PSU.
@@Cobuman Yeah I didn't do that for my first Lenovo build either. Do you think the HP motherboard will fit a mATX or should I get an ATX/mATX case to be sure?
@@tunasanwitch The HP motherboard is still a weird shape although it aligns at the top. That being said I would stick with ATX but if I had mATX laying around it would be interesting to test.
Good day good sir! Do you have a follow up video after this? I would love to know and learn how to further install the drives and where to put those pins. Thanks!
15:14 That dirty heatsink kept tripping me off, you should've cleaned it when you took it apart, just spray the can of air at least, other than that great video.
If you manage to find an office going out of business, they'll sometimes sell them cheaper than that with 4th, 5th, or 6th gen i7's , they may even throw them away, recycle, donate, or give for free.
I managed to figure it out for the rest: If you look at the header from above: xx -> pin 1,2 xx -> pin 3,4 -> power switch x -> pin 5 xx -> pin 6,7 xx -> pin 8,9 In order for the HDD LED to work, it should go in pin 7 and 9 (align the small arrow on the header). The Power led - should go in pin 6 and the power led + in pin 8. Pin 5 is not used. I'm not sure if the reset button works on this motherboard, as it does not work in my case
@@davidoosterhuis1355 You sir, are absolutely amazing. Plugged everything in exactly as you said: Booted immediately with all lights working! I cannot thank you enough
Not only very informative but a very enjoyable video to watch. Your video encouraged me to choose the 600 G1 over some other SFF systems. A great job! EDIT: I got a cannot beat deal on an 800 G1 and am in the process of transferring to a new case with a new PSU. A great system for basing a budget gaming system on.
Hey! I'm changing my case of my hp elitedesk G1 800 sff to te case showed in the video, but I have some questions. You do have Instagram or like that for se talk for my questions?
Power connector is a 4pin... the new poer supply i bought has a 8pin. Have to buy an adaptor. 8pin female to 4 pin male adaptor (Your links product wasnt available.) Also had to get a molex to 3 pin adaptor for the fans in the case. Harddrives connect to the outside/side-back of the case. The heatsink/fan i ordered (your link) they sent me the wrong one or it wasnt right for my hp. So i used the original but ripped the aluminum screwholes off of the old case.(wasnt difficult) waiting for new power adaptor to show up to.orrow.
If you can remove the other side panel behind the motherboard, that will tell you what the stock heat sink is screwed into. If the stock one has a mounting plate that comes out, I think it could be reused until you are able to get something decent.
Hello, I plan to buy the HP 800 G1 Tower soon, and I want to move everything to a new case, I'm not sure if the motherboard is of standard dimensions, more precisely if the screw layout is the same as on a regular micro atx board (micro atx I think), so my the question is, can I transfer all my components (power supply and motherboard) to MS Cyclops V. I'm worried about the layout of the screws on that motherboard. Thanks
Thanks for the video. In gonna try this transplant with my Dell Inspiron 580s sff into my Dell dimension 4600 mini tower. Would anyone know if this might work.
I just swapped mine, only thing is front usb connector is different (except usb3 connector) also i bought the psu adapter and the wires were all wrong, had to use original psu and mutilated one of the sata power cables and made it a molex connector to use new cases 4 fan rgb setup 👍
Power Button configuration for computers without split leads This is almost exactly the same as my HP prodesk 600 G2. the only difference I see is the CPU cooler and mine only has 2 slots for ram. the insides aren't the same but the mobo are the same. the main issue I had with my case transplant was the Power Button. HP, of course, had to make theirs proprietary and block pin 6 rather than pin 1 like normal PCs. My case doesn't have the Power supply leads split so I had to do some wacky wiring. Using your guide and this h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/pin-assignment-for-Power-On-off-Switch-led-Cable-710821-001/td-p/7458720 I basically put in the power button 90 degrees to what it should be. Normal cases have pins 8 and 6 being the power switch to I spanned those across what you have shown. HPs power switch is pins 7 and 8 so making putting pin 8 on the wire where pin 7 is on the motherboard and putting pin 6 on the wire to where pin 8 is on the mobo it works fine. Power light doesn't work but who cares lol. For the cooler I just used the stock cooler and some nuts and bolts to hold it in. Does this work with HP elitedesk 705 G3? Pls answer. I'm saving up to buy it but the seller said it's not recasable but I wanna recase it so it has fans n stuffs
@cobuman, did you just assume the G3 would work or did you test it? It's a different motherboard after G2 and doesn't use a 6-pin connector. It uses the flat connector (PWRCMD) and a 4-pin (PWR). Guess it's too late now since I'd already ordered a G3. No pre-made adapters. :|
Depends which G3 you mean. If 800 G3 then you are correct. But if it's for example 705 G3 then it's the same. Sorry about confusion. Anyway, if you need extra power to run a large GPU you can also use a 2nd PSU just for that. Here is my video if interested: ua-cam.com/video/tj2ws0mTm6E/v-deo.html around 5min mark I show how to connect it.
@@Cobuman I think they still use that flat 7 pin (and actually has 7 wires instead of just 4) for PWRCMD. But they switched to using a 4-pin 12-volt (I think it's 12 volt) for the PWR. I've been trying to find the pinouts for the power supply on the elitedesk G3 but I can't really find anything.
@@MatthewLenz Yea, I didn't find anything either. It seems like it was a limited model or something. Are wires colored like yellow and black? If so you can check using volt meter and possibly reuse the connector by connecting to power supply source. Like connecting it to extra SATA power cable. Of course, be careful if you decide to do so. :)
I did this following Cobuman's instructions here, and it worked perfectly. Used a new PSU and the suggested adapter and it runs great with my AMD Radeon Vega 56. I also added a new wifi/bluetooth card and NVMe PCI-e adapter with 1GB M.2 drive. The system does well for middle-of-the-road gaming and other desktop tasks. I would like to go back and replace the motherboard at this point, however, just to have more options for PCI-e space, etc. Cobuman, do you have a recommended motherboard to use in place of the OEM board? My EliteDesk had the i5-6500 processor.
The socket for 6500 is LGA1151 so any motherboard with that socket should support it. However, for some reason the newer motherboards with same socket only support 8th and 9th gen intel... really bizarre imo. Anyway, there would not be much of performance boost if you get a different (older version of socket 1151) mobo because 6500 cannot be OC which is one of the main reasons you'd want to upgrade. I hope that helps.
@@Cobuman absolutely. The layout on the OEM board is just really cramped, and I have more space with the Corsair case, so I’d like to upgrade if I can find and affordable board. Finding one that uses the older Intel processors will be the trick.
If anyone is doing this, the biggest issue is probably the cooler, if you dont want to buy a new cooler, you can buy a backplate and the original cooler should still work :)
Hey! I have a HP EliteDesk G1 800 and I want to change to a larger case. Works in the corsair case that you showed? Has any cheap power supple? Like 20$?
I don't recommend those cheap PSU because they don't last long. In a year it may go bad. Better of paying a bit more and it will last forever. EVGA is good: amzn.to/2VSFgye
I wanted to do this with an Elitedesk 800 G5 SFF, but that has the front usb ports and powerbutton directly on the motherboard, instead of with wires, so it was basically only made for that case, which is a shame, but I got it really cheap, will sell it with profit, learned a lesson and will buy some other motherboard and cpu :)
That motherboard looks the same size as the one in the broken Prodesk 600 g2 micro tower I have. I could just make life easy and put one of these in there. The IO part on the back looks identical and the power suply has the exact same connectors. Also this one has a better chipset, right?
I have 8300 SFF, i5 3570, 8 ram , ssd, 240w psu. I added all these components on wooden plate - to add there GTX 1650 (not low profile) which is powered through pciex16. It takes 75w (like GTX 1050 LP) so I hope that PSU 230w is enough for this setup. I'm currently working on thermal things, already isolated PSU from other components. This wooden board will be mounted under main desk board, so compleyely invisible, cold air intake from front side and hot exhaust from back side. So I hope that 240W PSU will hold i5 + GTX 1650 with 75W consumption
It should be fine. I have a couple of other videos in which I recommended using low profile version of GPU and nobody reported any issues with stock PSU.
@@Cobuman Only one thing here - based on coolermaster psu calculator my i5 3570 + 2x4GB DDR3 + Samsung SSD + GTX1650 75W it calculated 236 watt. I have also 500GB Seagate Baracuda 7200rpm but I'm not sure if this 240W HP PSU can hadle it too...so I have to make some experiments later & will inform ;-) I think that noone did some test on PSU consumption limit for HPs and Dells small form factors with specific HP 240W PSUs during max CPU+GPU load.
@@radovanrakovicky2655 I'd be interested to know what the total power consumption is on full load. I use *hwinfo64* when overclocking CPU which shows the wattage as well. Although, the power is measured at software level which may not be 100% accurate. The other option is using one of those tools that measure power at wall socket. Now that I think about it I need to buy one of those tools.
Done this BUT you get a message on bootup about front usb 3 is not connected as it's slightly different to normal.usn 3 headers on own cases. Also the rear case fan, if not connected the. You get a message about that also. I used a prodesk 490 mini tower pc.
but how to put another power supply? becasue dont match with this motherboard? and other question, what is the max cpu upgrade? because 1151 socket can put so many processors, but what is the max processor can match with this? and how to convert another power supply to this motherboard? Thanks!!!

I don't know which computer you have but this is how you find your CPU socket: ua-cam.com/video/stcuFDSUTwE/v-deo.html Once you figure what the socket is search with that number to find a motherboard. So, if you have 800 G1 the socket for that is LGA1150 and then you just search for that on Amazon. Like this: amzn.to/3dcvMGq If you find motherboards that are too expensive... at that point you might as build a new computer with better/cheaper parts.

I followed the video exactly and when i switch on the power supply the little green light on the motherboard blinks, so i know it works, but when i press the power switch on the case it doesnt boot up. Did i plug the switch into the motheboard wrong? Where am i supposed to plug it in?
hi, I followed all the steps you have described in the video and it worked, thanks for that! but at the very end I came up with a problem - how can I connect case fans to this MB? Looks like there is only a CPU fan slot and that's about it... any ideas?
did the same thing but the system only has 1 fan output that's why your fan is not spinning in the video. if you want more fans have to use fan expander of cpu fan header or use ps to fan connections
I just got the G3 version, totally different motherboard. The front USB, power switch, everything is part of the motherboard so it's too wide to fit in other PC cases.
I did all this and assebled perfectly on my new Case, but the problem I'm facing now is a dumb POST error that says that front USB ports are not connected, did it happened to you too? And if so, how did you solve it?
This happens to some people. If you don't have front USB ports connected you can just continue to boot and ignore the error; otherwise, connecting front USB would remove the error. This depends on which case you have so I don't have exact answer to guide.
@@Cobuman if you have a GPU installed it blocks the USB 3.0 plug. So it boots with an error message. I don't see any good way to fix the error message and keep the GPU.

can you suggest me a best CPU case for my HP 8200 elite SFF? I want to do like as you did but I have this pc and I just know that it has BTX type motherboard and the I just cant put any videocard, (i dont have lowprofile video card) New subscriber btw :)
What did you do
I just transferred my HP Elitedesk 800 G1 to an old HP Pavilion case, added a gtx 1650 and I'm playing Forespoken right now.
Thanks, In most situations people don't even change the PSU if adding a low profile card in to SFF case.
@@Cobuman Yeah I didn't do that for my first Lenovo build either. Do you think the HP motherboard will fit a mATX or should I get an ATX/mATX case to be sure?

Do you know the pins for the reset switch and leds? I want to connect more than just the power switch

If you look at the header from above:

xx -> pin 3,4 -> power switch
x -> pin 5
xx -> pin 6,7
xx -> pin 8,9
In order for the HDD LED to work, it should go in pin 7 and 9 (align the small arrow on the header). The Power led - should go in pin 6 and the power led + in pin 8. Pin 5 is not used. I'm not sure if the reset button works on this motherboard, as it does not work in my case

Ive never done this before. I WISH I TOOK PICTURES OF THE UNTOUCHED MOTHERBOARD BEFORE I STARTED. So i could see the original configuration.
Hey do I need to get a new heat sync? Cuz i want to do this and idk is it important. So if you can answer!
If you can remove the other side panel behind the motherboard, that will tell you what the stock heat sink is screwed into. If the stock one has a mounting plate that comes out, I think it could be reused until you are able to get something decent.
Thanks cobuman, just what I was looking for
Awesome! Sure thing.

Sure thing. The main issue could be the back I/O hole; it may be different shape or position. Let us know how it goes.

Great video! Is HP G6 800 sff same as this motherboard ? if change the power supply is it need another type of cable to fit inti this motherboard ?
Power Button configuration for computers without split leads
This is almost exactly the same as my HP prodesk 600 G2. the only difference I see is the CPU cooler and mine only has 2 slots for ram. the insides aren't the same but the mobo are the same.
the main issue I had with my case transplant was the Power Button. HP, of course, had to make theirs proprietary and block pin 6 rather than pin 1 like normal PCs. My case doesn't have the Power supply leads split so I had to do some wacky wiring. Using your guide and this h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/pin-assignment-for-Power-On-off-Switch-led-Cable-710821-001/td-p/7458720
I basically put in the power button 90 degrees to what it should be.
Thanks

@Matthew Lenz did you ever have any luck with the G3 ?
If anyone is doing this, the biggest issue is probably the cooler, if you dont want to buy a new cooler, you can buy a backplate and the original cooler should still work :)
nice! great tip!
Hey! I have a HP EliteDesk G1 800 and I want to change to a larger case.

I don't recommend those cheap PSU because they don't last long. In a year it may go bad. Better of paying a bit more and it will last forever. EVGA is good: amzn.to/2VSFgye
Hi mr Cobuman if ably re cases my pc and it went well, thanks for your guide.
very nice!
It might be the same chipset but different CPU
