  • For a shower or bath, I like these suction cup grab bars. They are not designed to hold the entire weight of your body, but for balance, they do a great job.
    I would purchase a suction grip safety bar from a medical supply house or health care supply.

    I know many people have had problems with these but I have had my up for years and have a couple come loose and I just readjust them. Just make sure the tile and the suction cups are clean...I put a little alcohol on the both.

    I use these for my elderly mother and they work extremely well. They are for balance but they are extremely strong if you buy this type with the large suction cups. You just have to check and make sure they levers are firmly pressed down as they do come up from time to time. I have them in my shower and they are excellent. Even the homecare workers recommended them, especially if you have a shower unit that you cannot drill into. You have to make sure they are on a completely flat surface - no grout or anything.

      Yeah, you're out of luck if your pre-existing tiles don't exactly match the cup distance.

    My mom has dementia and she looked a bit scared while standing in the shower. Seems like she likes to hold on to something. I might buy this as the floor does tend to get slippery when it’s wet. Even the bathroom floor.

      @FIXITHomeImprovementChannel  Рік тому +2

      Hi, if she has dementia, I would get a grab bar that you anchor to the studs, in case of a fall.

    Not the greatest product to buy. I bought two of these and applied them to a smooth surfaced vinyl tub enclosure. On several occasions they came off of the enclosure with very little pressure applied to them. At times I have even found them lying on the floor of the shower without even being used. Even as a stabilizer for the elderly, they are not the solution. If that person suddenly looses their balance and grabs the bar they can easily come off and they can seriously injure themselves. I highly suggest buying the bars that are secured into the wall studs so they are safe and secure.

    I have revisited my previous comments about grab bars. This installation is going to be critical to someones health. To drill tiles requires special bits. I'd recommend that you locate studs and select the correct fastener and drill bit. I think you'd be better off shelling out a couple of bucks for a contractor. On the landlord's side. The installation will leave permanent holes in the tiles.That's why they want you to leave the bars when you vacate. A 12" bar will run you 30 bucks. Big deal!

    Never, ever, ever use the Suction Cup Grab Bars. Every person I have consulted with that had Suction Cup Grab Bars told me
    that they fell off the wall with no load on it. It was stated that it was to "help maintain balance". What if balance is not maintained will the Suction Cups Hold? Think about it. You are relying on a perfect seal between the suction cup and the tile or fiberglass surface. Ever if you clean the surface thoroughly there is no way to insure a perfect seal. Also for a tile surface you are relying on the adhesion of the tile to the drywall as well as the condition of the drywall. I have been installing Grab Bars for 11 years in wet areas with no issues. Spend a little extra money for a proper installation using Wingits Fasteners and a Stainless Steel Grab Bar. Is it really worth the risk to create a FALSE sense of security? Do not rely on these suction cup grab bars! They release unpredictably over time even on a flat, horizontal melamine desktop. They should be taken off the market as they are potentially dangerous to seniors.

      They do fall off. I’ve cleaned the fiberglass and they seem great. Probably a week or so later they are in the tub. Do not rely on these.

    If she is getting dizzy then she should be sitting down in the shower. The suction will fail BTW.

    so in other words you are relying on the glue that's holding up the tile.

    Suction cups don't work very well on my porous tiles. I need permanent grab bars since I'm prone to falls. My lease wants me to agree to some very restrictive and expensive installation procedures. As a previous building super for five years, I've installed countless grab bars.These guys want me to get a contractor to install and remove them when I leave. In my experience, most buildings I've worked in look at them as an improvement to the unit. Do I have any options? Enjoyed your video. Thanks

    • @Hilltopperpete
      @Hilltopperpete 4 роки тому +1

      Ask for forgiveness, not permission. Just put something in that looks good and is permanent, when you move out if you leave it in they will probably charge an extra $50/month premium for "handicap accessible unit", just do what's good for you and as long as it looks good, they won't care. I've put in ceiling fans, overhead lighting, and all kinds of personal quality of life improvements in my apartments over the years and nobody has cared at all as long as they look good and they work appropriately and are installed safely.

      @@Hilltopperpete Good advice, thanks. I sold fasteners for over forty years. When I install grab bars, I'll use what I consider the absolute best fastener for that job, Well Nuts, or as they used to be known, Rawl Nuts. Neoprene fasteners that accept any kind of substrate. I suspect your handle looks like a play on Hilti, or the Leichtenstein Mafia as we called them. I worked for them in the early 70s. Boy, does that date me!. Again, thanks for taking the time to answer my question. Suction cups suck!

      My mom's lease office just told her the same thing, that she needs to hire someone "certified" to install these in the bathroom. They said they don't want to be liable. What this says, is they don't give a crap about their residents.

      Hi, for lightweight support, this type of handle does a great job. Especially if you are a renter. If you are looking for support for an older person who may lose their balance, a handle that screws into the studs or is supported by heavy duty anchors is much safer.

      The box is from carex but we bought them at a place called maxim in ontario and when I went in today to talk to the girl the staff told me we shouldn't have gotten those kind as it fools people into a false sense of safety. So I asked why the f*** do you sell them lol. And to top it off they said if it's opened I can't return them what kinda scam are they running thats like telling people you can return your food if u don't like it. But if you take a bite out of it you cannot return it so how would I know wtf... I was originally thinking maybe we got a defective one but comments here and online show the same thing. Since I can't return them Is it possible to glue them to tile?
