- At the 2021 IFSC Boulder World Cup in Meiringen - the first in 22 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic - five route setters faced multiple challenges: new holds, new athletes and a desire to bring new movements to the table. The goal of simultaneously separating the climbers and creating a spectacular show is never easy, but through collaboration and taking risks, the team attempts to find a balance. This film shows the process of setting for a World Cup, from the initial imagination stage to all the self-doubt, fear and last-minute changes ahead of watching the show that they've choreographed.

Awesome video! I wonder how having a female route setter would affect the quality of boulders on the women’s side. Seems to me they would only get better having someone with similar height/reach/flexibility as the competitors to test the boulders
Totally agree! My local climbing gym is lucky enough to have an even mix of amazing male and female route setters and it really makes a difference compared to other gyms I've been to.
Well the Japanese dude is somewhat shorter so the size would be fixed, but i do agree on some other factors

Amazing climbing and shaping as well as some of the coolest ideas for boulders ive seen, some of my favorite music and beautiful cinematography! I hope that didnt sound too inflated, this video is right up my alley, thanks a lot for that :D
Why is there not a single woman routesetting?
14:19 this would be my only thought setting for the women's finals honestly... With Janja being such a beast it has to be super difficult making boulders that she wouldnt flash but you still have faith that they are climbable. Of course, not taking anything away from the other female competitors!
The execution of the routesetting this comp set a high standard for the year. Perhaps, too high. The first comp and the best comp so far what a phenomenal final
I love the dynos but why do they never set one more classical boulder problem? It's okay, the crowd wont leave.

Are there women route setters as well usually?
Look forward to seeing more of these! I would enjoy hearing the route setters reactions to what the climbers did - especially if the climbers found unexpected solutions, or reacted to problems in unexpected ways. This is a really cool concept for videos!

setters are for me the one factor for competition climbing to evolve. the rest of us are to adapt, and it's up to us.. so, THANK YOU GUYS!

IFSC should hire the video producers of this video to do this for every or at least many of the World Cup events. Good advertising opportunity for the holds used as well.

Incredible video, a little bit disappointed to see only men doing routesettign, would be cool to increase the diversity inside the team as I'm sure a lot of women would bring up something new and innovative

Loved the boulders in this comp! Also love these videos so much!! It's cool to see how the routsetters intentended it and seeing their process building these boulders. The cinematography and music in these videos are also always really cool!

3 dyno's in 1 boulder...this isnt real climbing anymore
Climbing is getting to the top
When you have 4/5 minutes to send a boulder you can't just give them standard hard pulling on small holds,etc. because there simply isnt enough time to rest and it's much more likely that everyone breezes through it or everyone gets shut down by a move being too hard in a simple way.
These dynamic but still technical/complex movements allow for more variance in results, and inevitably create more excitement in the audience which is what inevitably funds comp climbing as a sport
@@slapthesloper i dont agree there. Athletes got seperated in the early days aswell, didnt they?
@@Fred-oz3tw A combination of strength, flexibility and problem solving skills is part of comp climbing today. Better than the person that can press the smallest holds :)
@@TheToxicdieter true. The best climber is chosen by the biggest repertoire of moves. So why not add some more moves to the competition?
