I actually think they're both good games, but the reason they "left a sour taste" is because they were too similar to the Wii game. They're still good games though. The internet definitely treats them worse than they deserve.

Not Star Allies. The levels were spaced out and uninspired compared to others. Return to Dreamland is great though, even if it's less mechanically focused than Super Star or the 3DS games.
i think you missed out mentioning the precision platformer aspect, games like celeste, super meat boy, inside, VVVVVV, . all of these are also staples of 2d games
You said that the Donkey Kong Country game is your favorite platformer of all time. If you haven't played Celeste yet, PLAY IT. Celeste is definitely my favorite platformer ever, and especially great if you like really hard games (it's hard, but you'll barely EVER get frustrated, because almost all of the deaths feel like your own fault, instead of bad level design). Also I recommend playing Hades, because it's literally my favorite roguelike EVER. Sure, it's hard but I PROMISE that it's worth beating.
I think 2D gaming was considered old in the 2000s when 3D games were coming into their own and were considered “modern”. Then the indie movement of the 2010s happened and people both fell in love with 2D games all over again or for the first time. Seeing how good they could look with modern hardware was amazing. Now 2D games just feel like their own genres that co-exist with all the 3D open world RPGs and FPS multiplayer games of today. I love both and you’re right about how well 16 bit era games have aged. As someone who only got into Super Nintendo games in the past year (I wasn’t born yet during its heyday), SNES games have aged SO WELL. The sprite design in that era was amazing and so many games in its catalog are timeless. N64 and PS1 is a little harder to go back to, but PS2/PS3, GameCube/Wii era games are also aging very well. I think it was just the growing pains of 3D games made the first generation not age as well
It's a crime you didn't mention Super Meat Boy, it was my introduction to indie games and one of my all time favorite platformers next to DKC returns and the soundtrack, LOOOOORRRD
Metroid Dread DEFINETLY deserved its own section, it's one of my favorite games cuz of cool graphics, abilities, boss fights, world. I just feel like it's progression is too linear and you have to follow a specific path unlike Hollow Knight. I really liked the sequence breaks tho. 5th favorite game after nsmbw, hk, botw, totk.
I played through the game and while I liked it, I just came off playing some other metroidvanias that I enjoyed more. Plus I don't have a ton of footage for the game so it would've been hard to give it its own section.
I'd also list Cuphead as an honorable mention. Sure, it's hard as heck, but the beauty of those graphics make up for it to me.

Honestly 2d games are better cuz they don't have so many issues with optimization and characters clipping into stuff
Whenever I play 3d games I feel like there are a ton of bugs that take away from immersion. We're as I've seen almost "perfect" 2d games
To me 2d games are harder than 3d game because you can not move around so much if you want to dodge attacks (this is only my opinion)

It's a one of a kind game, but these past 40 years have given us hundreds of masterpieces. I have played a lot of games I would choose over it.
