Spirit of the Game exhibit A: Bairstow attempted the exact same thing by trying to catch Marnus Labuschagne stepping out of his crease two days earlier.
Spirit of the Game exhibit B: England coach Brendon McCullum as keeper has many identical dismissals. (Mpofu 2005, Muralitharan 2006, Collingwood 2009)
Spirit of the Game exhibit C: Broad edging a ball to slip but refusing to walk, an edge the English quick has since admitted to.
Spirit of the Game exhibit D: Ollie Robinson telling Usman Khawaja to "F*** off" after dismissing him on 141.
Spirit of the Game exhibit E: The MCC long room behaved disgracefully. Not surprisingly three MCC members are now suspended.
Spirit of the Game exhibit F: The crowd chanting that Australians are cheaters. Actually the only person convicted of cheating in this series is England's Moeen Ali.
Spirit of the Game exhibit G: England bowling 'Bodyline' on day 4, for a record 98% short balls. Also extremely boring to watch - so much for "entertaining bazball".
Spirit of the Game exhibit H: England/fans not respecting umpires decision. This was not a bad LBW call, a missed no ball (etc)... this was within the laws.
Spirit of the Game exhibit I: England using mints to shine the ball in the 2005 Ashes.
Spirit of the Game exhibit J: England keeper Ben Foakes stumping Irishman Andy Balbirnie after holding onto the ball for a far greater amount of time than what Carey did.
I won't add Duckett not walking re Starc's catch, because we respect that rules are rules.
I also won't add England's controversial win over New Zealand in the World Cup final involving Stokes himself as there's been no shortage of comments about that.

If anyone should have warned Bairstow, it was Ben Stokes, who was standing just 22 yards from him and must have seen him walk away prematurely from his crease time and time again. Stokes could have yelled when he saw the ball leave Carey’s glove towards the stumps.
And coach McCallum…didn’t he know about Jonny’s bad habit of leaving the crease? Everyone else knew. Did McCallum speak to Bairstow about this during practice? So these 2 guys need to stop blaming the Aussies and look in the mirror.

I thought cheating was breaking the RULES of a game? As to “spirit”?? I googled to look back at cricket in the world .. there is plenty of “spirit cheating” by every country from top to bottom. Apparently the Australians are at the top of the world in cricket at the moment, so naturally the target of every nut job opposed to Australia. I not follow cricket that closely, but googling proves my point. The English are amongst the worst “cheaters”. Australia apparently suspended 3 top players (for 1 year or 2 years??) for ball tampering, while the English (and I believe every other country ?) have never done that. The English have many examples, including their bowler in THIS TEST SERIES !!! Sadly “whinging pomms” seems accurate….the complaining is driven by losing the match.

    • @cqaqa

If you remember Dhoni recalled Ian bell in a similar situation when everyone thought the ball was dead. Listen to Sir Geoffrey talk about body line series and how Australia refused to come to England for the next ashes should they persist with body line, even though it’s within rules. The bottom line is if you push the rules too much, then cricket becomes a zero-sum game and everyone starts doing this kind of tit for tat to gain advantage. These things should be taught in the U10, U12 level to play the game with the right spirit and not look for these kind of advantages. Ultimately education and the way you have been taught plays an important part. Spirit of cricket comes into play when you get a batsman out who has not taken any undue advantage. In mankading or stumping or running out, a batsman gets an advantage when trying those. But in this case the batsman hasn’t taken or got any advantage. While I agree that Bairstow was wrong to stroll out of the crease, we also need to understand he was not trying to steal a single or take undue advantage. This is similar to batsman pulling out after a bowler delivers the ball (yet its called a dead ball) or bowler pulling out just coz he didn’t get his run up right. In these situations both batsman or bowler need to bowl or concentrate on one additional ball. I think if batsman or bowler don’t get any advantage on a action, then getting them out on such action/habit is little unfair. In Bairstows case probably the opponents could have given a warning.

That's why I think its a bit poor and not in the spirit of the game. England are cheaters . Last weekend elf cup how they won against newzeland . Did they forgo 4 runs no

Too many people are completely missing the point losing this match was nothing to do with bairstow getting out this game was lost in the first innings you can debate all you you like we had the most perfect bowling conditions and didn't use them we were 181 for 1 lyons was off the field the aussie bowlers didn't even look like taking a wicket but rank stupidity with the batman cost us that match we should easily have gone past there total

Ironic talking about the rules of the game and whatever the umpire says is gospel when 24 hours earlier every Aussie was moaning about the starc decision- at the end of the day we are generally biased towards are team when incidents like this happen with a few notable exceptions.

And how do u reconcile the “catch” by Stark the previous day. We all saw that was not only a catch but an amazing display of fielding excellence. Stokes could have used the spirit of the game to right an obvious wrinkle in the rule book.

Boycott's account of the history of Bodyline leaves out key facts. He ignores the fact that the MCC decided that bodyline ought to be banned after the West Indies fast bowlers Martindale and Constantine tried it against England in 1933.

Sandpaper is the spirit of the game. Until you get caught out. Underarm bowling is within the letter of the law too....
Sledging ? Well, the Aussies have an excuse for everything...

And they have been whinging & complaining ever since.

I paid alot of hard earned money and for now tv. Also recovering after cancer which is life or death not the ashes. Do you know that I waited for any cricketer to take photos of me. Every English man took one and when I saw Mark Taylor and I asked to take a photo. He ignored me as I thought he was neutral but I was proven wrong because he ignored me and went to the media box. After chemotherapy and I am just recovering from cancer, I am very upset how the Australians want to win at all cost when it is only a game. Do you know I was one of last few supporters waiting after the match on the 5th day waiting. If you had cancer, you might think differently.

When Test cricket is reduced to a single annual match between India and Australia, I'm sure the Australians will be just as self-congratulatory.
They don't understand that it is the paying punters they cheated of a fantastic contest. That Stokes made it one is testament to his class, not their lack of it.

    Here's a little something I wrote for those gin-soaked jackasses in the Members' Stand;
    𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗱'𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿
Our game, which is from Heaven,
    Sour grapes be thy name.
Our day will come, and we will be done,
In Leeds as we were in Edgbaston.
Give us one day, a day to be glad.
    And forgive us our whingeing,
Though we never forgive those who win against us,
    But deliver us from losing,
For ours is the shame, the tears and hypocrisy,
    For ever and ever.
    Sad men.
