- In this video I’m showing how I wet sand and buff runs out of a single stage paint job I did on a Toyota Corolla that I painted white. I’ll show you what tools and materials I use to fix the runs and to buff the panels to a smooth gloss finish.

Beautiful work KING, there are a lot of painters that don't know that you can buff single-stage paint
Thanks Pharraway I appreciate you and I hope the video helps people out!
One of my father's painters told me that if you notice a run while painting, it may seem counter intuitive, but he said to give that area another light coat, so that when you block sand the runs, it is less likely to cut through. Great video Mr. King!
Thanks I appreciate that tip greatly 🙏🏽 and appreciate you checking out the video!
Now I think that would of been a great idea.
Interesting to hear that. I'll remember that.
Over 40 years ago we had acrylic enamel paint which was very hard to jump on and buff then they came out with this single-stage Urathane which was a game changer on solid colors but on metallics we were still using lacquer with a Urethane clear on top and now the wonderful world of Base coat clear coat 2k .... I was the first in my city back then to use it and it has gotten even better. The cheap stuff is better than what was top-end back then. Keep up the great work
Thanks MustangRebuilder I appreciate you and paint has come a long way. I keep hearing about metallic single stage being a handful so I’m gonna try it out in the near future

I’m glad the video was helpful and I appreciate you checking it out, good luck on your project 💪🏾💯
i painted a pair of side mirrors and had a few runs and i end up sanding away a quarter size circle of the paint then i try to repaint it and the paint end up looking like bunch of cracks forming up,. this was my first time using single stage and i should have search up of how to take care of runs now i have to sand to remove the paint completely and start over. thanks for the information i will do this step when i have runs in the future
I’m glad the video was helpful and I hope you have better luck the next time you spray your mirrors!
I used turbo cans on my car and it didn’t work out. This video gives me hope on saving it. Thank you!
Glad the video was helpful!
I like the method of applying a thin coat of body filler around the run and then sand the area until the run and the body filler are just barely gone. This protects the surrounding paint and gives a precise indication when the run is now level with the surrounding paint. Polish and you are done. This approach might take just a little longer as you need to wait for the filler to harden, but it makes the sanding faster with much less chance of burning through a spot.
I agree that, that method works really well!
This was great Boss. Us guys, your students, will be making mistakes. This video is as important as watching you lay on the material. You showing us how easy it was to correct a mistake takes a lot of fear of doing something wrong away from us. Maybe you can do a short when you have this all put together and you roll it out in the sun.
I’m glad the videos help and take away some of the worries of doing some of this type of work, appreciate you as always Joe!
Great video bro, that run came out smooth!
Hopefully you will have more single stage projects because I would like to see more. People sleep on single stage! It can come out nice and it’s budget friendly.

Even the best get sags/runs at times, too many variables effect paint, even so, your positive attitude is what excels and this makes the end results shine IMHO.
Thanks Biggysground, I appreciate that and I do my best to keep the channel positive!
Good to see you work through the problem with out creating more work UPK!
Thanks I appreciate that! I try my best to but sometimes creating more work for myself happens 🤦🏽♂️😂
I've had good results cutting the tops of the heads/runs off with a Festool carbide scraper. Quicker than sanding. Others use razor blades to scrape them off. But sanding is definitely easy to control. The beauty of single stage is the heads are the same material as all the rest of the paint
If this was base coat clear coat I could have taken a few different routes but with it being single stage I wouldn’t to be on the safe side and sand it, I’ll have to look into the scraper you use
This is really going to help me out when I paint my 57 Chevy next spring. Never painted a car before and I am planning a nice single stage paint after I do the bodywork over the winter. One thing that had me scared was being a paint rookie, I know there's going to be runs. Now I know what to do about it. Thank you for showing how to do this. Appreciate you.

Great video and you explain it the process very well! Thank you! I also like how you explain that you need to leave enough paint after sanding so you can buff it with the compound otherwise it can burn thru... Great tip!
I’m glad the video was helpful and I appreciate you checking it out!
You can shave them with a razor if you're slick. Saves a little time just getting the heads off the sags
@@257796 appreciate the tip💯💪🏾
Using spot putty over the runs allows u to knock down runs without touching the flat paint. That method always works because it's impossible to burn through
I’ve used that method before and it does work! I appreciate you checking out the video 💯
what i do is adjust to fan instead of jet for applying the water

You described it perfectly on your other video. Color mixed with clear. Easily wet sanded with solid color. Metallic single stage is not easily wet sanded almost impossible.

Wish I had known that back in the day. Spraying acurlic enamels, it was " what I sprayed is what I got". As a matter of fact I don't think I ever heard of paper finer than 400. That 1500 stuff must one step courser than "news paper".
Today the grit gets up to 5000-8000 grit for smoothing out clear

Get yourself a run razor. Kinda like a block plane for wood but made for auto paint.
I’ll have to look into a run razor, I’ve used dirt nibs before
The only thing is, no time scripted for how long you waited before sanding and buffing. I know single stage paint take longer to get hard enough to cut and buff but looks like it's still masked from painting, that's something I would never attempt.
I left it masked so I wouldn’t get compound everywhere and I waited 4-5 days before I cut and buffed

Depending on how much material you have on your panel and how big the run is, you probably could start with 1000 grit sand paper then move up to 1500 grit and continue going up on grits until you get the results you’re looking for

Thanks king… Im all most ready to paint my Tacoma 98. I put a new engine in and its ready to be paint. I went to PPG dealer for a white basecoat and they want 400. I wonder if you can suggest a budget 2 stage paint brand I should use ?

@@carlhenri1446 you’re welcome!
I had a problem wet sanding a single stage Red. The drips/sags dried in different layers, so when you wet sanded you could see different colors (it was like the different pigments settled differently). It outlined the drips / sags. After that I always do base / clear. It's not worth rolling the dice for me. I can always correct bases before clear, and I know I won't have that issue in a clear.
So you sprayed a metallic single stage? You can have that same issue doing custom paint jobs when adding pearls and flakes etc. in your clear coat and getting a run
@@UndergroundPaintKing NON Metallic. It was just a base color no flake no other additives.
@@moetop wow, I hear other people talk about that issue with metallic but not regular base
@@UndergroundPaintKing There was a lighter red layer as well as an odd purple layer. I have run into it with metallics, but you expect that, as the way the metal flake lays depends a lot on the spray and a drip or run will collect the flakes.. (I think I had another discussion on one of your other videos on metallics, and changing them by how you spray them.)
@@moetop yeah I believe we talked about that before, it’s weird how you got the different colors of paint in the runs🤔

Best tip I could give for painting outside is to pick a day when it’s not too windy and either early when the bugs haven’t gotten to busy outside or late when the bugs aren’t as busy, I hope that helps Micah but when it comes to the painting outside, it won’t be much different from painting inside a building

Hey brother I enjoyed this video, I got told by the paint supplies shop you couldn't correct a single stage and if you messed it up when you put it on the car that was that. But seeing your video give me the confidence to go out and try this. I got one question, when I was putting my paint on I didn't really spray it around well enough and I got some runs, some heavy /cloudy spots.. Will the compound buffing bring out some shine? Also, how did you prep the paint surface, mild car wash and then did you clay bar?
This was a fresh paint job so I didn’t have to wash it or clay bar, I just wet sanded the runs and buffed them out.
@@UndergroundPaintKing cool man what prep would you recommend if I i been driving the car a couple weeks? Just a good wash?
