I met her at a Victorian weekend at my local museum - she had a room set up to showcase her work - and my cousin and I felt a complete pair of wallies during the afternoon tea, sitting right next to her in our novice attempts at historical costume, and could hardly speak to her 😅 Still, she gave us some great words of advice and encouragement, and I was honestly starstruck the whole time 😂
Lily James' natural measurements are supposedly bust 34- waist 24-hips 35. so her waist reduction is only two inches pretty normal for a non-extreme tightlacer.
@@MidnightFox2189 Where on earth are you getting a 19 in measurement? Everywhere I've looked has said the corsets waist measurement was 22 in. And either way, even a 5 in reduction for a short period of time isn't always bad. My everyday corsets are generally a 4 in reduction and as long as I'm careful and don't try to wear it forever I'm fine, my chest binder makes it more difficult to breathe than any corset ever has

With the weight of the crinoline and all of those layers in the petticoat and skirt, a corset is an absolute must in order to keep the weight off of your waist and hips and support all of those layers.
The same goes for bras, you get one that fits perfectly, then you get the same size in different brands then oh boy here's the fun you spill out everywhere, or you find that its either too small or too big, not all sizes sre uniform and consistent. Definitely a major bugbear.
But allsaw good becouse that bra fit some other breasts better instead that can´t have your perfect one. That I can´t understand when people complein about sizes when the ones that not fit you fit so good on others. Just becouse we don´t look a like.
Yep, it took me years to find the right bra for me, so, naturally, when I did, I bought like 10 bras. I am, however, thinking of switching to corsets, just for the fun of it.
Something that’s also important when looking at actresses wearing corsets for film is that honestly, not all costuming departments, directors, etc. give the actress time to season the corset, either because they don’t know that it’s a thing or more likely they simply don’t have time. Of course there’s also the problem of not everyone in the industry caring about the comfort of their actresses in the first place but that’s a whole other issue. But yeah, it’s basically being forced to wear brand new stiff shoes for full days of filming, of course it’s going to be uncomfortable.
Let's also stress that tight lacing also doesn't mean that you can't breathe. If you can't breathe, you don't wear it. It also takes time, no one just jumps into a corset and laces themselves with a 4 inch reduction. It takes getting used to and adjusting your body. Just like wearing heels does.
Eh, to be honest, I did lace with a 4 inc (actually, 6 inch) reduction. And it happened with a gothic fashion corset from Burlesque, at that.
I just started working in that gothic store when the manager was thinking about adding a new type of corset to our range, that were made for fuller figures especially (the idea was to tight lace, but wihtout having those 'back boobs', if you know what i mean). And I just fit the body type.
So, she measured my waist (32 1/2 inches) and because I never wore a corset before, decided to start with a 32 corset. Closed it completely and I didn't notice. Moved on to 30, same. Then to 28, and that's when I asked her when she will start this 'tight lacing' she was talking about. Those were, btw, with metal spiral boning.
Btw, I just have a perfect body for tight lacing. Hips and shoulders are wide, but towards the waist especially my rip bones are getting slimmer in a conic shape. Also, turns out my organs are some loose chicks, you can squish them around as you please. (I was also told, those 2 characteristics of my body will make child birth easy peasy for me).
Well, I also didn't have a single strand of muscle in my body back then, so yeah. I started to feel tight laced with a 26 inch corset, and that was cause I was feeling it agains my bones. Could still work for 6 hours straigt in it at the shop, after adjusting my breathing.
I don't think tightlacing for a costume/special event is a bad thing. Daily wear maybe wouldn't be very healthy. We've demonized the idea of tightlacing- even historically women didn't tightlace often. You could argue high heels aren't healthy either. I think moderation is good.
I knew a lady who wore TALL heels so frequently by the time she was 50 she could ONLY wear 4in or higher heels because she shortened the tendons in her heels
@@Paige-kc2ho oh, that’s similar to my grandma! She wore 3-5” heels daily her entire life and now her feet reject anything without a heel. It gives her intense pain up her legs and through her back and feet. She wears 3-4” wedged sandals constantly now that she’s retired and if she must wear sneakers, she wears ones with a wedge heel. She even goes hiking in her wedged sneakers. You’ll never catch her in flat shoes... even her slippers have a 2” wedge! lol
The unhealthy part in tightlacing is mostly your muscles becoming too weak because they get trained less. Funny thing with heels, because of my high arches I actually got issues because of shoes being too flat and now I probably have to get surgery to solve those issues
@@misstensecret4156 Yeah, tightlacing is perfectly healthy as long as it's not too tight on the top (around your ribs) for too long, you do something to strengthen your core when you're not corseted, and it's not messing with your digestion or ability to consume enough calories.
FINALLY! Someone saying she was laced and measured 22", and NOT claiming 17". 17" is very unrealistic considering her height and proportions.
I'm definitely planning on making some kind of chemise, corset, and maybe a corset cover for wearing under my wedding dress. Can hardly wait to make my wedding dress!
omg yes! lily james is a thin and small lady, a 21-inch waist is TOTALLY achievable for her, also she had to dance and act all day in that costume. if it was really that restrictive, she wouldn't be wearing it

Taylor Knight, maybe it felt that way, but unless she has been waist training A LONG TIME, 5" waist reduction is basically impossible, and visually would look extremely disproportionate and unappealing. Also, the body double for Lily James is seen practicing dancing corseted. She isn't that reduced. Her waist looks similarly proportionate, lean, and shapely.
There is A LOT to be said for being tall, svelte, and wearing garments meant to make the waist look as tiny as possible thanks to tricking the brain-eye perception connection. Happens ALL. THE. TIME.
Lily James did say she had a 17" waist but she also said the dress made her weigh "four times heavier" (Lily James is around 120 lbs) the dress is made of tulle not lead.
Katrina DeKarver, exactly. She was, in all likelihood, exaggerating her waist size when corseted.
I made myself a corset in the summer to wear with my Halloween costume, gave me about 4 inches waist reduction, but because I broke it in gradually , I can barely feel the reduction now. So thanks for talking about tightlacing accurately!
I had a friend make mine, lol. Took us a while to get there, and we used hooks. She worked on that and I worked on crocheting lace for her costume as well as doing her hemming and making some adjustments to my store bought costume so it would fit better, and work with the corset. The reason I wore it for that occasion was my costume was off the shoulder, and I have a LARGE bust. I can't do strapless or off the shoulder anything without a corset, just doesn't work. Its fun to co-op with a friend, or friends. Delegating tasks to people who are better at something is great and watching it come together was fun. I hand sew so hemming is something I'm fairly fast at. She's better with patterns and adjustments to patterns. I'm good taking something already made and adjusting it. I also just like making lace, it's so much fun!
Woah, I didn't know men wore corsets too. Is it shaped the same? Since men don't exactly have breasts, I assume it would be shaped a bit differently
@@humanperson1835 the corset I drafted for myself was an under bust corset, so I didn’t need to worry about trying to make something for features I don’t have, otherwise it was just a case of making it custom to my waist and hips measurements for how I wanted it to look
I think corsets on men are fantastic! It's such a shame it's stigmatized nowadays. It looks so slick!

I think the flossing is amazing, even if it doesn’t go in the same direction. Plus it fits the story line. The fairy godmother was a bit chaotic in the movie, as well as her magic. While I don’t think I would have noticed the flossing going in different directions, it serves as a sweet homage to the fairy godmother’s character, making small “mistakes” and still making them beautiful and adding to the look. Fairies were believed to be beings of nature, after all. And it is nature’s asymmetrical tendencies where we find the most beauty.

i have a dear friend who always wears a corset contradancing (which is so vigorous that runners get winded doing it until they get used to it)...and she is a tornado out there on the dance floor, twirling her skirts til they fly! so, yes, you *can* breathe in a corset!

I view tightlacing sort of like spanx. it''s not something I'd do every day or even often because it's not comfortable, but at a special event where I want to look cute? Yes, I dig the spanx out of the bottom of my underwear drawer.
I don't think it's quite the same. While I don't know that much about tight lacing, I would say it takes a bit more getting used to than just spanx

@@hollybrooke322 Well yes, that's literally my point. People tight lace on a regular basis so that their body is used to it and they're able to get a better, safer and more comfortable waist reduction. No one occasionally tight laces unless they don't really know what they're doing.
Tightlacing is more like good boots. You have to spend a lot of money for a custom fit/good materials and then you have to spend some time or deal with some discomfort to ‘break’ it in. But after you dedicate some time to properly getting in tune with it (or deal with blisters/squeezing in my metaphor), it’s insanely comfortable and can make you question why you would go back at all.
Karolina M, a tailored corset is way, WAY more comfortable than Spanx.
Building onto the shoe metaphor, some shoes might be uncomfortable at first but you either get used to it or break them in and it’s quite similar with corsets. Someone who hasn’t ever worn a corset is going to be a little uncomfortable at first and whale bone corsets get softer with heat when you wear it and forms to your body, “breaking it in”.

And also, shoes tight laced are quite uncomfortable, you usually need to wear socks (for most laced shoes such as boots) or your feet hurts (like a chemise for a corset)
I think her waist looks tiny because it’s already tiny plus she had the super big skirt. The whole contreversy was blown out of proportion 🙄

Kinda agree, why not add hip bump or enhance the corset hips, it will make the waist looks smaller, this is why corset got bad rep because people wear it incorrectly and super tight lacing.
@@evilvampireduck Belle Mae says in the video that Lil James was laced to 22 inches. Another comment has added that Lily James' waist is supposedly typically 24 inches, so it was only a 2 inch reduction - not drastic at all.
I think the controversy was that the director wanted her to lose a lot of weight to tight lace her as small as she could and it wasn't healthy for the actress

I absolutely LOVE wearing corsets. I have back problems and abdominal pain and wearing one relieves that pain and supports me. I suppose it's way cuter than the back brace. I want to make some and wear them. I am disabled now and I can wear whatever I want and I want to make my own wardrobe. I would like to make historically inspired items. And some post apocalyptic style stuff. And I'd like to upcycle.

I absolutely love the colour of this corset. Stunning! I have to say I'm not a fan of Disney, especially the remakes, but this is the right colour for Disney Cinderella in my opinion. You know, it's blue, but resembles the old Cinderella dress, which was silver or silvery blue. It wouldn't look like wedding dress as some people would be afraid when making it similar to the original. I think they should have make the dress lighter and colder shade than they did. Also am I the only one liking the real dress more than in the movie, after changing the colour with a lot of computer work?

I'm currently making my own corset, have very, very low experience with sewing, but whatever😀. I don't need it to look great, I don't need any special silhouette - I'm doing it for health purposes. I have scoliosis and hypercyfosis and absolutely hated medical corset (so I lied about wearing, well basicly not wearing it; don't do it). I can live almost normally, don't have almost any issues eventhough doctors are always asking if it hurts at least; not at all. Now I'm making my own corset, which is softer and you can actually breath and live in it 😀 (medical corsets are or can be very uncomfortable, especially if you have scoliosis and hypercyfosis combined; but still, people can live in them). It will keep my back straight when sitting in front of computer for hours (quarantine and school). I'm following a 1870's pattern with some adjustements and it's great. I can safely say corsets are comfortable.
Thank you for your videos, you encouraged me to finally make my own corset.
P.S.: if doctor tells you so, wear your medical corset

@@vintagepomegranate2981 yes, I have, but she had different intentions. Her scoliosis is less flexible than my back, she actually wore corset a lot and it made it fixated in certain position. Also she wanted a symmetrical silhouette which she achieved by padding on one side. My corset is tighter then her😀 my back look different each day (to certain point of course)

Most fashion models are 5'8to 5'10 and have to have 34-24-36 measurements for so it's not crazy that Lily James at her height would have a 24 inch waist.
I’m so excited for thissssss! I wish I could sew so badly, I have such a fascination with sewing and corsets 😭
Get a decently simple and cheap sewing machine, hit up your local 2nd hand shops and get some tablecloths, curtains, bedsheets, find some really simple tutorials on UA-cam and just start sewing! It's best to start out with no patterns/VERY simple patterns. Learn how to sew straight and even, how to maneuver fabric, how to put in button holes or zippers. Just start developing skills.
Circle skirts are super easy to do, or pillow cases. Or heck, even face masks too! Find some cute fabric squares at Walmart and just go to town. Once you get a good feel for sewing, step up to some more challenging projects. Sewing pockets or doing shirts or even a dress.
Then you can start doing more complex projects.
All it takes is a little work and you'll be there in no time 😉
For a very basic garment, gertie sews on UA-cam has a very in detail video of how to make a basic gathered skirt which is very good for beginners so if you get some just basic fabric, nothing expensive or anything and just go for it you might just surprise yourself
You can learn. In fact, now's a great time; face masks are ridiculously easy to make, and oh so practical right now. I'm sure there's plenty of tutorials to get you started, and that way you can practice the basics of stitching straight/etc.
Wow that looks lovely!! I really didn’t notice the directional changes until you pointed them out. I doubt I ever would have. I have the same problem when sewing or any making. I see it with the creators critical eye so everything I’m not happy about stand out. Took me years to realize that those things where not in fact highlighted complete with arrows and signs saying “OMG look what she did here”. As Shirley Adams says “it’s a design feature” embrace it! Ok it took me years to embrace it and the realization that I was making things for kids who didn’t stand still so who was going to notice the mistakes. All that said I love it. Most will not even see the difference in the flossing just the beauty in the finished corset and the beautiful flossing detail
God, I know. I made myself a winter coat, and it’s awesome. But recently some said: That coat is awesome, where did you get it? I told her made it herself, And then Ist made her look look at that teeny tiny arm wrinkle in the lining fabric that no one can see unless I specifically open the coat and point it out.

Wait, is 3" reduction considered tight lacing? Gosh I must be exceptionally squishy, because my 1860s corset feels so comfy at 3 inches.
Some people even say 1” is...but I think it really depends on your body type!
@@Sarandib22 for me 1" reduction is tightening because I have crazy long ribs and torso. There is only 1" between my ribs and hip bones. Some people have more space between their ribs and hip bones so they can squish smaller. I would say tight lacing is squishing your body down so much that you are doing body modification that makes it hard to breath move and hurt.
My corset (not meant for tightlacing, it doesn't have the right shape for max waist reduction) feels the best at three inches waist reduction. So comfortable! I didn't try lacing further since it closes fully at 3 inches red., I would have to adjust it.
Edit: I'm not really used to corsets yet so it's not because my body is damaged or wrongly shaped because of corsets. I also have scoliosis which makes tightlacing more difficult

Very much depends on the person. I can reduce a good 4" before it feels tight at all. My tight lacing is like 6" reduction. I never thought I was terribly squishy...
You work so quickly! I could never.
When you have a diagram with no guidelines, try using a grid overlay. Makes the math easier.
Also, it’s quite obvious that the direction of flossing on the bottom is a deliberate design choice. So there! Harrumph!
The front center flossing change was intentional, but the other ones weren’t! 🤪

another option is to photocopy the pattern and get it enlarged at a print shop, it costs some and you have to be careful not to let the paper distort at all when you are copying it, but if you are crunched on time it will save you a lot of tiresome math-ing.

Such a gorgeous process!! I recently bought a sewing machine to make some attempts at making something I could wear and your videos are SO inspiring! And refined also. I understand perfectionism (I love to draw) but I also think that the "mistakes" in the direction of the flossing are beautiful 💕

I’m over here copying down the titles of the books you’re holding up. If you’re up for it, would you do a book review for each? Like what they do a good job of, how much info per subject they give, which subjects are covered, and areas of weakness?
As much as I would like to buy all of them, I have to pick one. Hopefully one that would complement the book I have: “Lingerie Design” by Pamella Powell.

If you are able to use auto cad, archi cad or any of these programs enlarging patterns to scale is way easier, you just take a scan & you can scale it to print it.
I think you can actually do that with GIMP or Photoshop too.

I love the color combination of the chemise and corset. It's so sweet and feminine and it coordinates perfectly with all the colors in the dress.
I used to dress at Renfests... I LOVE corsets... And yes, if you get the right corset and lace it correctly, you can still breath!! Plus, you sit up straight and for those with larger breasts, it takes the pressure off your back!

It's so pretty! as always I love the little finishing details of the lace and flossing. I have been feeling the need to make a corset and this is the perfect excuse and inspiration to look at all the pretty fabrics.

If you want to cinge it in for your cosplay, do it. Don't care what other people say or might get triggered by. I think in addition to the large skirt and poofy bertha, her large hairstyle and the style lines on the bodice also adds to the illusion of a smaller waist/more cartoony proportions. I've seen some cosplayers - who also are corsetted - but with flatter hair, and looking at the contrast underscores for how just how big Lily James' hair was and how that added to the illusion, as well as balancing the large skirt and poofy bertha.

This is at least the second time I’ve watched this video, yet I still find it just as fascinating as I did the first time. I have absolutely zero knowledge in sewing or even general costume making, but that doesn’t prevent me from fully appreciating this video at all! It’s already aesthetically pleasing enough to watch blindly, but what makes it even better is the fact that it’s actually taught me a lot of things that I’d have probably never learned otherwise!! The striped mock-up honestly looked so pretty??? I genuinely need a corset that looks like that. The fit, the silhouette, the fabric - that mock-up was PERFECT.

I really like the shape of the final corset, I think I'll draw something similar onto a character in a story I'm writing. It's fantasy, so I don't need to get super hung up on what styles go in what period, which allows for some nice variety in character design

Tip for the pattern drafting. You can scan and super impose a grid using the scale legend over the drawing. You can either print or use the grid image to reference sketch onto pattern paper.
Between the powder blue color, the lace, and the ribbons, that corset looks like it was stolen out of a Disney princess's wardrobe...sooo exactly what it is supposed to look like.
I have Corset and Crinolines too, but I was so scared of making a pattern from it (and also scared of making a corset, as the last one I made was 7 years ago and it was a 16th Century one...). Watching this video might just have been the push I needed to say "hell yes, let's try it." so... Thanks!

Bella Mae is spot on ! I've been an actor at Renaissance Faire's for the last 33 YEARS - as a peasant or "wench", lower and upper middle class, and nobility. My daughter started working Faire from age 3 onwards. She's now portraying Queen Elizabeth I. We've both worn different corsets and the ones that fit well weren't uncomfortable at all. A corset should feel like a firm hug. If you can't breathe and if your organs feel squished, it doesn't fit and/or you're not wearing it properly. Loving these videos 💖

Also, just an idea. If you have a printer that is able to scan documents you could scan the corset patterns in that book and figure out how much you need to scale the image up to print it to size (e.g. if the 6" line you mentioned actually measures 1" you can print the scanned document at 600% to print it to scale)

I told my doctor that I was planning to switch to wearing corsetry instead of modern day bras & started to get the whole "corsets are BAD & EVIL" speech from him...so, I told him to go watch Bernadette Banner, Morgan Donner & Bella Mae's videos about Corsetry. I explained that it affords better back/bust support & that a properly sized corset can actually be quite comfortable to wear & that you can still breathe quite comfortably in a corset. Honestly, love it when someone like you comes along & starts busting the corsetry myths with
"I've got my corset on & all laced up properly. And yes, I can still breathe!" Thank you!

i read an interview lily gave at one point about the dress, that the undergarments were the most comfortable out of the entire thing, she said she didn't feel the corset at all and that she only felt the full effect full dressed. otherwise the corset on her she said felt no different than wearing a fitted bodice.
i'm plus size and i have never actually measured my waist in corsets. i often tell people lacing me to go as tight as possible. i'm squishy and i don't feel it. i often push my corsets to the limit before i myself have issues.

All the tight lacing discussions. I am a 32-year-old guy, and my waist is 24 inches; when I squeeze, it’s 23. That actress is not only petite, but she is also tiny. To me, the corset just looks fitted and perfectly shaped to her body and the purpose of the dress as a whole but not tightly laced by any means.

Oh it's beautiful, so beautifully constructed, and satisfying to watch you make. My mending and altering skills are pretty good but the only things I've made from scratch are my prom dress (seven years ago 😱), and a pair of shorts (more in the works in theory though lol)
Next time you want to use the Corsets & Crinolines book, take it in to your local print/copy shop and they can help you enlarge it by using the scale. They'll just print it so the 6" scale is actually 6" and all the pieces will be ready to cut out!

I know when I'm wearing a corset, I can reduce down by six inches, but I'm also super squishy. While it might be a bit tight, it's still super comfortable.
But on a different note, your corset is gorgeous!!! 😍
22 inches is fine tbh. My waist is 24 I don't think it would be so difficult to go down to 22.
Her natural waist is actually 22”. And she was corseted to 17”. Lily and others have mentioned it.

Loved the video, I think we have all been there for multiple mock-ups. I saw you punched holes into fabric to place your grommets. I was always taught to go in with a sharp awl to essential move the threads apart rather than cut the threads with a punch. It keeps more of the fabrics integrity. Just another method to consider.
Thanks for sharing! I did want to do that with this corset, but after testing it out, I couldn't get the hole large enough! (It had 2 layers of coutil and 2 of silk to go through!)
I feel like if you have longer torso that you can lace tighter. I have a very short waist and definitely can’t pull in two inches. That’s said I wore corsets while dancing and it wasn’t right but I didn’t tight lace either. 😅
