Why not start sewing? You don't need to start with a hoop skirt. Maybe just some cute panel skirt? With a stiffened (starched) petticoat underneath, you can still have a lot of fun. And need only beginner's sewing skills. You could even handsew it if you don't have a machine. Just look for "handsewing for beginners" tutorials.
Same here. I grew up around a few capable-yet-amateur intermediate sewers, but the gene skipped me completely. And yet I keep finding myself in CosTube admiring the talent of others. But I just... I do not understand shapes and fabrics at all. I can hardly fix a rip in my clothes without the stiches getting knotted in a tangle or coming completely undone (it also took me an extra long time to learn how to tie my shoes and I used to beg for velcro shoes so...I'm sensing a trend here). How am I supposed to comprehend the technique of sewing a sleeve onto a bodice...

And people have told me since I was a kid that I should learn to sew, but I've never been able to comprehend the geometry, the math, or even the technique. I could more easily write a dissertation or learn a new language than I could learn to sew well. It's like rocket science to me. 😭😭😭

Handy tip: tape your tape measure to your table with masking tape while you’re measuring out your boning, ribbon and tape. It’ll make your work easier and it won’t harm the tape measure or table. If you want a permanent solution, there are self-adhesive tape measures.
These videos are honestly a dream come true! I became obsessed with the dress when I tried (and failed) to recreate it on a doll scale a few years ago, and would watch every single video and read every single article about it; I was desperate for content like this. Even though I can barely sew, I find your videos absolutely fascinating! This is such an amazing project.
ah when i made a hoop skirt, I hand-sewed the boning channels to the ribbon. It was a little hard to maneuver, and having a dress form really helped, but it was easier to keep the bones in place. It's of course up to personal preference.
This is very interesting. I recently completed an elliptical hoop skirt based on the Truly Victorian pattern. It has a different shape but it really felt more like a construction project than a seeing project.
Did you finish the ends of the boning with u tips or similar? I thought you had to so they don't end up cutting the fabric and poking out. But I've just watched 3 different people seemingly not finish them at all? I'm a little confused lol

The final result looks so impressive! It was really scary when you took all the boning out to sew the channels at the sewing machine. I think I would have chose to just hand sew them all on the dress form, with a thicker thread maybe, like flossing - I think it would have possibly taken less time, and it would have definitely been less dangerous. Moving and manipulating that skirt with all those pins in looked hella dangerous. Pulling all the boning out and then putting them back in (and being careful not to mix them), plus dealing with all the dangerous pins when manipulating the skirt, plus dealing with all the threads the sewing machine left... I would have definitely chose to just hand sew on the mannequin and avoid all that. Anyway, it looks great! And I'm sure it took so long to make, by the look of it
I wear them all the time for re-enactments and other events. If made correctly and fitted properly it's better than any bra. The nonsense about tightlacing is just that--nonsense. Check out Izabela Pitcher of Prior Attire. She has a video of herself dancing, walking, running, and playing tennis in a corset.

Another amazing hoop skirt/crinoline!!! I can't even begin to imagine the amount of maths involved in making these, and honestly the fact that you get them done so well is an achievement in itself to me. All the undergarments look amazing together, I know you addressed it in your last video but I think the chemise being a brighter shade than the corset adds a nice little pop of colour (even though it'll be hidden underneath the dress 😅)

I would love to see how much you actually spend on each step to deter me from even thinking about ever trying this. So far i made some pouches, pillows, aprons, jersey fabric tops, skirts, face masks and i am not anywhere near this level of sewing but my hands are itching
That seems to be about the right level of skill! The trick to leveling up your sewing game is to pick something you are highly interested by. Now, this gown in paticular is a pretty advanced (and expensive) project - but if you want to simply make a hoop skirt and a gown or skirt to go over it... much more reasonable goal! Keep in mind that fasion trend had a "day wear" version too! You can also "moderize" a hoop skirt in many differerent ways. I've seen hoop skirts with translucent or clear fabric on runways. I've also seen lolita styles with knee-length hoop skirts
I am wanting to make this for my 17 yr daughter who does Disney cosplay. $250 just for the hoop skirt is a little out of my price range. Is there any way to still make it but not as expensive?

A super cheep cos-play hack is to sew (or duck tape) a skirt with the shape you want in two layers with the bottom hem sown shut - then stuff the layers with plasic bags for the shape. That makes a "bag pettycoat". Its noisy and doesn't hold up for more then a weekend or so. Plenty of time for convention!
I will be starting mine soon! I've downloaded the pattern and I've been rewatching this a few times to get ready. I handstitched another elliptical cage... Is the machine stitching better? I gasped when you removed all the boning after getting it pinned... I'm afraid.... How did you keep it from getting tangled?
It'll be interesting to see how much influence these costumes have on fashion. The "olden days" were not the only time hoop skirts were in fashion. There was a revival in the mid 20th century. Some of it was a result of the post-war boom. During hard times and during major wars, women's skirts become straighter/narrower and shorter to conserve fabrics. The years after WWII full skirts, worn mid-calf, became popular.
Putting the role of boning in a box with a small dispensary hole cut in the side and pulling the free end of boning out. Then taping the box shut (not the dispensary hole of course.) Makes cutting the boning not only easier, but much safer. My grams taught me that tip which prevented additional trips to the e.r. (seriously don't be foolish like I was before learning better.)
I purchased this pattern and I'm so excited to get started on it! What would you suggest for cheap options to make a mock-up? I like to practice first before doing a final structure.

I have one question, i was starting to cut out the ribbons but i think the measurements are a bit small for me, i am a bit tall (175 cm so 5"7 i think, yes i am french so i have to translate all the measurements too aha ). I was wondering if i needed to make adjustments in your opinion or if your diagram will do, even if it's a bit short ? Thank you very much !! :D :D
i have a question for these hoops skirts. do you want it to sit at the same place that the skirt will sit at (waistline of dress) or a bit below so the layers of fabric arent too high?
Language changes over time. What the designers are now calling a crinoline was was, for obvious reasons, referred to as a hoop skirt and a crinoline was the layer over the hoop. Depending on the skirt, often the hoop was not worn and the very stiff crinoline held the skirt out. We wore hoops under our evening dresses back in the 1950's. Some of us even wore pantaloons under them. Kept us warm in the winter and modest when we forgot and walked between close set tables/chairs. I once saw a girl's hoop fly up to her head and the pantaloons prevented the young men present from viewing her bare legs and panties up to her waist. If you've never worn a hoop skirt, it pays to practice before the big occasion. There's an art to appearing graceful in all that steel!
How does sitting work in this? I’m having a hard time wrapping my mind around how to sit with the U boning, doesn’t it prevent the cage from collapsing?

I know this video is old so I probably won't get an answer but I'll still try. So I bought your crinoline pattern and I followed it as precisely as I could. But it didn't came out as I was expecting. Your crinoline even without the "butt tie" is pretty even while mine is way lower on the back. Could it be because im wider in the waist so the ribbons are mostly on my back and not on my sides? Do yoyu have an idea how to fix it?

I would have gone for something you could step into, and tie into place because that is just too much to deal with over the head. But it looks awesome.
with how you pinned the horizontal hoops did you mirror your method on the other side? like in the video the pin mark is on the right of the ribbon so did you put it on the right on the other side too or mirror it so the other side is on the left if that makes sense?

Yay, the first time I made this, I hand sewed the entire thing by hand...but after is took nearly 20 hours to do that, I didn't want to do it again!

It'll be interesting to see how much influence these costumes have on fashion. The "olden days" were not the only time hoop skirts were in fashion. There was a revival in the mid 20th century. Some of it was a result of the post-war boom. During hard times and during major wars, women's skirts become straighter/narrower and shorter to conserve fabrics. The years after WWII full skirts, worn mid-calf, became popular.

Putting the role of boning in a box with a small dispensary hole cut in the side and pulling the free end of boning out. Then taping the box shut (not the dispensary hole of course.) Makes cutting the boning not only easier, but much safer. My grams taught me that tip which prevented additional trips to the e.r. (seriously don't be foolish like I was before learning better.)
I purchased this pattern and I'm so excited to get started on it! What would you suggest for cheap options to make a mock-up? I like to practice first before doing a final structure.

Hi Bella ! First of all, i looove your channel :D I'm a big fan of your cinderella videos !! I recently purchased your diagram for the crinoline and all the needed material ! I have one question, i was starting to cut out the ribbons but i think the measurements are a bit small for me, i am a bit tall (175 cm so 5"7 i think, yes i am french so i have to translate all the measurements too aha ). I was wondering if i needed to make adjustments in your opinion or if your diagram will do, even if it's a bit short ? Thank you very much !! :D :D

i have a question for these hoops skirts. do you want it to sit at the same place that the skirt will sit at (waistline of dress) or a bit below so the layers of fabric arent too high?
It really depends on your dress and the design of the hoop. My waistband of the hoop and the skirts will sit at the same place.
Language changes over time. What the designers are now calling a crinoline was was, for obvious reasons, referred to as a hoop skirt and a crinoline was the layer over the hoop. Depending on the skirt, often the hoop was not worn and the very stiff crinoline held the skirt out. We wore hoops under our evening dresses back in the 1950's. Some of us even wore pantaloons under them. Kept us warm in the winter and modest when we forgot and walked between close set tables/chairs. I once saw a girl's hoop fly up to her head and the pantaloons prevented the young men present from viewing her bare legs and panties up to her waist. If you've never worn a hoop skirt, it pays to practice before the big occasion. There's an art to appearing graceful in all that steel!

How does sitting work in this? I’m having a hard time wrapping my mind around how to sit with the U boning, doesn’t it prevent the cage from collapsing?
this video is super helpful and interesting. but I am really wondering: does the tie that holds the crinoline in place (ya know, the one at the butt) feel weird? or like, hurt or makes your leg movement smaller? it just looks uncomfortable to have a ribbon tied under the butt tbh...

So I bought your crinoline pattern and I followed it as precisely as I could. But it didn't came out as I was expecting. Your crinoline even without the "butt tie" is pretty even while mine is way lower on the back. Could it be because im wider in the waist so the ribbons are mostly on my back and not on my sides? Do yoyu have an idea how to fix it?

with how you pinned the horizontal hoops did you mirror your method on the other side? like in the video the pin mark is on the right of the ribbon so did you put it on the right on the other side too or mirror it so the other side is on the left if that makes sense?
