  • In this week's Sunday Vlog, Brian and Bradford discuss the Helix vs the Kemper. We also get to see some OLD worship footage where Brian cussed from stage during a song. It really happened.
    Footage from Sunday, October 14, 2018 at Newhope Church - Durham campus.

    I had a volunteer tell me after a service she (thankfully) wasn't on the stage for that she had a lyrical gaff much like yours. We were singing "Be Thou My Vision" and she had her eyes closed at the start of the third verse. She assumed it started with the word "Be." It doesn't. She opened her eyes to see what the first line was as she sang "Be" only to find out the line is "Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise." Well, she got a combination of "Be" and "Riches."
    Don't heed them either.

    You should add one more to the mix. I went AX8 and love it. The other guitar in my band has a Kemper with MB profiles. It kills. But the AX8 crushes it for fx. The multi delay is amazing for praise and worship. Thanks for the video and being great men of integrity sharing the word!!

    My tube amp has never failed me at church after 25 years of playing... And I always here my rig sounds like the professional worship bands...I've gone digital .. but always come back to tubes...I just backwash it in the side room of the stage ..never any complaints...just compliments I'll save the $4000 dollars and put it in a worthy ministry...

    The Helix is alright, I wish I had a Kemper thought now because you can just plug in and it sounds great right away. The Kemper sounds more organic and warm than the Helix and with the Helix it seems like no matter what patch you use there's always this certain AM radio-ish quality especially with a lot of drives stacked, and with the Kemper I don't that overall tonal influence as much.

    I think you both hit the nail on the coffin for another reason why you would want to go Kemper over line 6. It was the main reason for me to pick up a Kemper versus the line 6 helix....... The kemper is more drop and go less tweaking versus the Line 6 and I hate tweaking amps. And that’s pretty much the only reason I chose the kemper over the helix

    I own a Kemper for about a year now, it is a great unit of course!
    But personally for me, it is not a plug and play and it sounds amazing at all... in fact, I still don't feel like I have good sounding profiles...
    The other thing is that the Kemper is as good as the profile, and the same amp can be profiled very differently by two different people, and for me it's like constantly putting my sound in someone else's hands...
    These are the struggles I personally have with the Kemper, Try all the units you can and decide for yourself :) Cheers

    Have a kemper at home and recently got a serious cover band gig. Intended to get a second kemper for live. Then started thinking about a backup rig and thought well, maybe a helix for a backup. the more i dove in though i realized for that particular application, The Helix was probably the right way to go for how deep dive you can go with the sounds and the snapshot mode. Then the HX stomp comes and if you are either economical with your main helix patches for the gig, or create streamlined versions of those profiles, all of a sudden having a small board with an HX stomp a volume and expression for a travel or fly rig. It has become a no brainer. I will eventually put together a live kemper rig for more original bands gigs where i don't need anything as deep divey, but yea...for the cover thing the helix really surprised me.

      A few of our campus worship leaders were using amps until just recently. But they both bought Kempers. It’s honestly a lot easier to get great tone to FOH with them or a Helix.
      I know one of them kept the amp though - it’s a Princeton.

    I was all in for the Kemper, but then Line 6 announced the Stomp, and I can't resist the ability of running two amps in stereo. Plus, I have a full pedalboard, which I'm happy with. The only section that i'm unsatisfied is my drives section, so its good hearing from you guys how good the Helix drives are

  • @777strat
    @777strat 5 років тому

    Tried the Helix...great interface, some nice L6 effects and amp modelling, great all-in-one but in the end though, I returned it...not as convincing as I'd hoped. Tried a Kemper...great amp profiling, effects are pretty good and getting better. I now use a Fractal Audio AX8 as a rig/scene controller and for their Great effects, along with an H9...many, many great effects to be had here and I was a previous Strymon Big Sky and Mobius owner. For amp tones I use two Kingsley tube preamps, for everything Marshall I use the Kingsley Constable - incredible JTM45 to JCM 800 (with the Kingsley Page)! For clean to mild breakup to even raunchy Fender/Dumble crunch, I use the Kingsley Maiden D with the Kingley Page DS Tube Boost for cascading gain and similar to that of a Dumble 2ch amp...I now have 'True' tube tone and great effects from just my pedalboard...no guitar amp required;)

    My worry is the longevity of the Helix or even the kemper to fully get rid of my tube amp and pedalboard. We all had the Hd series and thought they were the best solution and very quickly line 6 replaced it with the next thing. And I think that will constantly be the issue with line 6. I have the HX fx now and I do find that useful as a compact solution from time to time but I still keep going back to my analogue pedals. It’s the menus that drive me crazy even though it’s now as simple as it’s always been and analogue pedal is still faster to dial in! But thanks for your thoughts and insights!

    • @lepromisedmonke7012
      @lepromisedmonke7012 5 років тому +1

      From what I have heard, Line 6 is going to continue Helix updates for another 6 years so that isn't too big of a worry if you buy now.

    • @StringsOfCrossroads
      @StringsOfCrossroads 5 років тому +3

      Trevor Pister in my view 6 years is still a very short time. My ac15 and a good proportion of my pedals are almost 20 years old and still work perfectly. My point is analogue rigs are still an investment where as digital will always be replaced. And even though there may still be support for the item by them time the next new one is out by line 6 you’ll want that. Trust me I’ve had the HD400 then the 500 then the 500x and line 6 m9 and m13 now I have the HX effects all within a few short years which actually work out quite expensive if you add that all up. No one will have a helix or maybe even a kemper 20 years from now.

    • @bongchu3364
      @bongchu3364 5 років тому

      Same thoughts. And another thing, what if it breaks? Im pretty sure the whole thing will gonna be affected. Even though the technology has gone better, it's still not reliable I guess. Analogue pedals all the way.

    • @lepromisedmonke7012
      @lepromisedmonke7012 5 років тому +1

      @@StringsOfCrossroads Although I see your point, I think the Helix was a game changer, to the point where if you compare the pedals it modeled to it they sound pretty close to the same (amps are Debatable but I would still say they sound good). Analog pedals may hold value in the long run for the fact of being analog but I don't think the Helix will become obselite because it's digital. I highly suspect there will be another multieffects unit that surpasses the Helix but to say that the Helix would be irrelevant just isn't true. If it sounds as good as other pedals then use it and don't believe the lies that you have to have the nicest newest digital multieffects. With that said, the Helix is a steal for how good it sounds. I will take having to spend $1000 for a Helix Lt, having an easy rig to setup that is much lighter, and an insanely good direct sound over spending $2000 on an amp I want with an even more expensive board that is probably going to be less flexible then the Helix, a time consuming rig setup, the inability to play in environments where I need to be quiet, and a bigger hastle for sound guys to deal with.

    • @googuser3145
      @googuser3145 5 років тому

      Dude.... its super SUPER close in tone and feel NOW... cant imagine what updates will bring. As you'll see in my avatar I have a Dual Rec... I just for the first time tried an HX LT and I was floored..... I had a Jackson with an 81, and I had a Recto Patch boosted with a Tube Screamer going though a Recto cab mic'd with a 57.... as I dug into the strings... it felt like I was at home chugging on my own rig... I own the HD500X and I was happy with it as a 4 cable FX unit. But as a full tone rig, unless I was feeding a tube power amp with a Preamp Model, it sounded horrible... NO MATTER WHAT I DID... As far as tweaking pedals.... I see what you're saying... but if you needed 3 different delay settings for three tracks... you cant practically change your Boss pedal as quickly and reliably as creating a new patch... In a set list on Helix you can set up 4 patched PER BACK of the exact same rig (amp/cab/eq...etc), but in each patch you can have the effects set up 4 completely different ways, and you can chose 4 different stomp effects per patch, which you could NEVER change on the fly with stomps.... another feature is... you can use one stomp button to do two different things.... ie, chorus normally on, then tap the assigned footswitch to switch off the chorus and engage a phaser and rotary speaker.... or just use one footswitch to toggle between two different chorus settings..... possibilities are limited to 24 effects per patch... im sure that's more than anyone needs....

    I've always been torn about it. I run a pedalboard into a mic'd ac15hw1x and love it. I just hate having to lug so much gear to church. I've never wanted a helix because I like my pedalboard and I'd love a kemper but it doesn't really eliminate the lugging around so much gear part plus not being able to go stereo straight in is a big downside. Now the hx stomp has just released and I think I'm definitely gonna go with that. The ability to put all my delay/modulation on my board in the effects loop on the stomp is a big bonus too. Means I can supposedly put effects either side of them and also be able to midi control it with my looper. Plus balanced stereo out!

    • @worshiptutorials
      @worshiptutorials  5 років тому

      FWIW - the Kemper allows you to go stereo. It's stereo effects (not dual amps in stereo), but still stereo. It sounds great, but so do the Helix amp (especially with good IR cabs).

    • @jesselandreth4497
      @jesselandreth4497 5 років тому

      I meant with a stereo pedalboard into the kemper. I've heard it's possible with the effects loop on the kemper but when you have to put the kemper backstage, running an effects loop seems a bit hard to do when you'd have to run multiple cables back and forth

    Does the kemper have everything the helix has? Serious question. I have a helix. There are more pedals preamps , ect in the helix than Ill ever use. Also the helix can be routed in amazing way. You can do mega rigs with the routing. Does kemp have same routing capabilities? Another thing, this is important. In order to bring the helix alive YOU MUST USE IRs. I have yet to see a comparison video were they use IRs when comparing to kemper.

    I’m an HX effects user, who is very interested in the HX stomp, but I’m “concerned” a little bit about only having two paths available. I’ve been really interested in doing a wet-dry-wet setup which would be easy with the helix floorboard, but with the HX stomp, I’d be “limited” to a stereo setup. :-/ this may be the most first world problem ever... so... the question I guess is: do you think the HX stomp along with my HX effects running stereo will be worthwhile vs a single amp in a side room, or waiting until such a time that I can get a full fledged helix floorboard and have that slightly extra benefit of w/d/w vs stereo.

      Logan Dowie the helix has the effects portion in spades, plus oodles of routing flexibility that the kemper simply doesn’t have. The kemper stage doesn’t address those things. It does address the issue of needing a separate remote, but the inherent differences are the same.

    Hey guys. Love the videos.
    I help with the youth and I am also part of the band that plays for the youth. We have no one else to play and I enjoy serving in this area. Our youth pastor, who leads and plays acoustic, is leaving our church and I am going to be the only guitar player in the band now. We have keys, cajon, and bass. I don’t sing well at all and I don’t feel like I should be a leader. So it’s going to be weird for me going from playing lead to being the only guitar.
    Sorry for the long post, but how would you handle being the only guitar player in the band and still play electric? Should I treat it like an acoustic rhythm? I’m afraid playing lead still would make it sound empty and not as good. Thank you

    First let me just say, thank you guys for all the helpful and well put together videos. A++.
    I've been looking into getting either the HELIX or the Kemper so this video was very helpful. I would like to know your thoughts on the NuX Solid Studio for live performances. I currently run all my analog FX pedals through a NuX Solid Studio that connects via XLR to the house board. To my ear on stage It sounds "close" to playing through a mic'd tube amp. I'm pretty sure no one in the audience notices the difference.

    Hi Brian, When will you make a video about HX Stomp? Would you recommend someone who just started in worship team to go with Helix because there are the resource you guys put on worship tutorial.com?

    You forgot one more comparison, which one can you tweak or modify on the fly easier? Many times I get to church and what sounded good at home did not totally translate, or I want to swap or add an effect.

      On the fly the Helix probably wins, just due to the fact that the user interface is far better.

    Do we think the HD500X is still usable in modern worship today? I come from a really small church, and right now everything is coming from stage sound. I would like to move to modeling but I don’t want to spend too much. I love your HD500X videos, just wondering if you guys think it’s still usable. Especially considering it’s like $300 used.
    Thanks guys!

    I disagree, I think the Kemper needs more tweaking then the Helix. I have both.

    Quick question. I am in the market, and thinking the Helix. I love the routing and wet effects options. I know the drives are great, but I have a morning glory and a King of Tone that I want to keep and run in the loops with the Helix. Do you think having those two pedals with the helix is a better idea? The setup, routing, and the floor nature of the Helix is very appealing. But is it a waste with my drives? Looking for any input. Thanks!

    • @worshiptutorials
      @worshiptutorials  5 років тому

      You certainly can do that if you'd like. You can run them in the effects loop and essentially insert them in any place you'd like in the signal chain. I can say for sure that the Teemah (Timmy) model can get really close to the KOT. I'm not sure about the Morning Glory, though. One thing you can do is use amp preamps as drive pedals. We do that some in our patches. For example, use the plexi preamp to get a plexi pedal type tone. It's pretty great.
