Waterloo Metro Station Opens its Doors! Inside the First New Sydney Metro City & South West Station!

  • On 29th October 2023, Waterloo Metro Station opened it's doors to the public! And this was the first station on the new Sydney Metro City & Southwest extension to have a community open day.
    The station building at street level has an entrance on Raglan Street and another entrance on Cope Street via a pedestrian plaza. Once inside the station, I met Hugh Lawson, the Project Director for Sydney Metro City & Southwest and he took me (and quite a few other people) on a guided tour!
    You'll see two of the three artworks created by award winning artist and designer Nicole Monks, and these are very impressive.
    Once on the concourse, you'll see the Opal gates, escalators and lifts to the platform, and the rather funky toilets! At this point, I also meet Luke Garden, and he talks about Shear Walls, Waterproofing and the challenges involved in building this station.
    The station is designed by John McAslan and Partners, and features Glass Reinforced Concrete Walls, that reflect the Sydney Sandstone, and Bronze Perforated Walls, that incorporate designs of the Banksia Scrub.
    The 10 metre wide platform below is very spacious and open. You'll see the platform screen doors, signs, help points, and all the other typical components seen on Sydney Metro platforms.
    Back on the concourse, both Hugh and Luke cover more on the construction of this station, and Hugh provides an update on the train testing as well.
    Back at street level, I cover the Services Building and the new Waterloo Metro Quarter Over Station Development that is in its very early stages of construction.

    Wow - that Metro-Station is on another level! It's a palace for the people. Australians seem to have learned a lot of lessons fron Europe, the US and Asia and in fact I am a litte bit greedy - though my hometown Munich should still have the better public transportation network - at least by now.
    Also a very nice presentation by decent people and great to see everybody smiling about this gorgeous new environment.

      Hi Oliver, Yes it certainly is! I can see quite a lot of similarities with London's Elizabeth Line and the older Jubilee Line extension that happened around the millennium. It will take us a while to catch up with Munich, and Germany is far ahead of Australia when it comes to high speed trains!

      Hi Anthony, Yes we are! It's really changed in the last few years, with much more of a focus on public transport (although we're building new roads too). Yes its a long way from San Francisco, and wonderful to hear that you're watching my videos from over there!

    Thanks Paul. Really appreciate these more comprehensive videos and the time you put in to bring this content to locals like myself who are impacted by these great engineering works and ultimately benefit from them. I really like the way they've disguised the ventilation systems into the overall design. All the surrounding government housing is unfortunate, but the future development of the Waterloo Metro Quarter looks promising.

    Nice to see the large lifts. Its usually an after thought for paramedics when the stretcher is used during medical issues on platforms.

      Yes absolutely! 27 people seem to be the standard for Sydney Metro from what I've seen so far, and this includes all the new lifts at Central Station too.

    World class metro design. It looks very similar to some Elizabeth Line/MRT stations. Also thanks for a great video, I’m getting Geoff Marshall vibes from the videography :)

      Yes lots of similarities to the Elizabeth line, MRT and also the Jubilee Line extension that I worked on back in 1999! The northern concourse roof at Central Station, reminds me of the roof for Stratford station. Glad you enjoyed this video. Yes Geoff Marshall is a big influence for sure. Hopefully, we'll get to meet and do a collab video one day!

    Thanks very much Paul. You are staying true to form with this excellent coverage. That bit about the access buttons to the toilets; it would be better to have the tactile proof that the door is locked. After all people are expected to clean their hands post visit. The whole project is excitingly drawing to a completion. Thanks for whetting our appetites with all the updates. Interesting how small villages grow around such hubs as these isn't it?

      You're very welcome Luke. Yes I agree that buttons or even an old fashioned lock would work better. Yes its a very exciting time right now! Yes that's all part of what is known as "transit oriented development", and often the developers behind these schemes help pay for the cost of the station which is great! There is a Barangaroo open day on Sunday, so I'm really looking forward to that one!

      Thanks Geoff! It's changing very rapidly. When I first came through Waterloo on my bicycle in 2010, it felt quite rough and I didn't hang around there! Its still quite a poor area with lots of old social housing, so hopefully the station and Waterloo Metro Quarter will help revive the area.

    I was just in singapore where they use those wave to open at a lot of places. They are often slow to register and often don't pick it up. Buttons are much better.

      Thanks Karl, the official word on opening is still "mid 2024", and I don't think we'll get an exact date until about 6 weeks before it opens. There's still lots of testing to do, and they can't open until all this is done, and its got regulatory approval. And also some of the stations such as Crows Nest are a little further behind Waterloo!

    Another great video, particularly the added coverage on Waterloo Metro Estate.
    Should also be noted that there are also redevelopment plans for the much larger Waterloo Estate to the East of this station which currently consists of fairly dilapidated social housing including large towers.

      Thanks Mark, glad you enjoyed the little part on Waterloo Metro Estate. Yes I know those dilapidated towers very well. I've cycled through them a few times! Its one of the few parts of Sydney that just doesn't feel safe! So I'm totally up for redevelopment of this area!

    I would like to see more information on the proposed apartment building. The government has a responsibility to speed up building of apartments, considering the crisis in Sydney housing. I hope this will be a station that will allow the development of new residential towers in the blocks around it.

    Thanks for the tour Paul. I would prefere wave in case off the toilets. There are so much peoplle that use those, all the germs. I think not pressing buttons is better. Loved the video. Thank you.

    Great summary, as usual. It would be great if you could put captions on the video of their journey. I tried watching it and couldn’t figure out which stations were being passed.

    Another great summary of the Metro construction. Can we have an update on the opening date. For 5 years they have been saying it will open in 2024. There are only 6 weeks left before we say goodbye to 2023 and yet they won't give an update on the opening date nor an indicative opening month. The Project managers must have a plan.

      What I'm hearing at the moment is mid 2024. The project managers certainly have a plan for sure, but unexpected things can up in the testing, which is why they cannot give an exact date as yet.

      Waterloo badly needs one. Some of the residents there are some of the poorest in Australia and they shouldn’t have to walk to the city or take a crowded bus. You can see the government housing flats from the station which reminds everyone of the poverty in Waterloo.

      @RUHappyATM, apparently its called "Suicide Towers". Waterloo is one of only a few places in Sydney where I feel quite unsafe! However, I've been over a dozen times now, and never had any problems yet. I do tend to go on Sunday mornings though!

    Poor bloke on the dunny, It;'s funny that not 10 seconds beforehand i was thinking to myself " What if someone doesn't fully understand the locks" and as if by miracle and right on time you vindicated my suspicions.
    On the subject of the lock/unlock panel i find it funny that there is braille for the locked and unlocked lights as if they assume all blind people could see the lights.
    The rest of the station looks pretty slick but the toilets in my opinion are a far fetch from perfect.
    There is a reason doors are standardised and i feel as if the need to appear modern and flashy has outweighed practicality.

    I quite like those sensor buttons. In part because its cool tech, but also because touching things in a public bathroom, particularly handles is kind of a dodgy experience... lord knows if someone has washed their hands when they use it. But yeah, they need to make sure to have the locking mechanism down for it to stop accidents, haha. Maybe have a button also next to the toilet itself.

    Historical note: Raglan Street becomes Henderson Road after it crosses west over Botany Street, and Henderson Street carried the former St Peters Station via Alexandria tramline, closed in 1959. Cope Street was originally named "Botany Street", but name changed sometime post-war to avoid confusion with adjacent Botany Road. In Botany Road itself there, traces of the original Botany line tram tracks can still just be made out under the bitumen..

      Sometimes in mid 2024. No exact date as yet, as it will depend on how the testing goes. Waterloo Station and the Central platforms are basically finished, but some of the other stations still have some work to do!

    Waving buttons in the toilets is more hygienic. But you could spend a long time in there if the electronics go wrong - which of course they will sometime e.g. what if there is a power failure or blackout in the area - is there backup power supply? Is there an emergency manual release too? I prefer a plain old manual lock with indicator outside. Then you could always get out.
    The door closing but not locking when you go in will clearly be a problem. They should perhaps require the person to close it themselves. That is an ergonomic stuff up. Some people not used to the technology will always omit locking it .e.g older people, and others will come along and do what Paul did and expose them on the throne to the view of people outside 😮 😂
    Surely they can come up with something more foolproof on both getting locked in and also forgetting to lock the door. This whole complicated and potentially troublesome arrangement is just to avoid people touching the controls it seems. They should replace it with a manual system so everyone can operate it no matter how old or mentally incompetent.

      Hi Rob, these are great questions! There is probably a back-up power supply for the station that would kick in, if the power did fail. I do think some older people will struggle with this! There is a simplicity to the old fashioned handle! I'm going to the Barangaroo open day tomorrow, and for some reason, I am particularly interesting in the design of the toilets there!

    Hi Paul, Waterloo looks like quite a modern looking station. Is Waterloo Station within walking distance of any other station? i can't recall ever visiting Waterloo, unless I have passed through the area by bus in years gone by. There is certainly a long escalator there. I prefer pressing buttons to waving, as i have found with waving and even using touch screens doesn't work that well for me. Technology like that seems to often think I am dead!!! LOL. I thought it was funny that all the imitation skylights are fitted, but he real skylight is covered. Maybe the real skylight doesn't look genuine enough!!! Incidentally, have they considered adding any extra underground stations between Sydenham and Bankstown? Anyway, take care.       Hi Rob, Its about a 7 minute walk to Redfern Station, and it will take the pressure off Redfern Station when it opens. They are still working on the plaza above hence the reason for the covered skylight. No plans for any extra stations between Sydenham and Bankstown. Yes I think pressing buttons or even older style handles would work better for the toilets!

      Hi Paul, just curious, but I am wondering how train passengers will be able to travel from Marrickville to Petersham. We did this often while visiting my grandparents back in the 1960's. The usual way was to travel by train from Marrickville to Redfern and then simply change trains. However, with the Metro using Waterloo instead, this journey may become more difficult, unless, they put in a walkway between the two stations.

      @@RGC198 Probably two options - if you get on the train at Sydenham you can still take the train to Redfern on the T4 line. But yes if you use Marrickville station it'll no longer go to Redfern - you'll have to go to Central and change there

      I actually used to live at Marrickville prior to moving here to Melbourne in mid-1981. I used the trains on the Bankstown line quite regularly in years gone by, it is interesting seeing all the changes happening there.

    Please please NSW Transport can we get rid of these hideous naming conventions....the Northwest Metro extended to become the Northwest, City, and Southwest Metro.....how about just calling it M1.......short and precise....sure add some detail like Tallawong-Bankstown as another smaller sign indication.
    Then the Western Sydney Metro can just be M2 and the western Sydney Airport Metro can be referred to as M3. Simples.

      Thanks! glad you enjoyed it! I think when the extension opens, it will be simply known as "Sydney Metro". The current naming convention helps differentiate the different parts whilst its being built. When the Western Sydney Airport line opens they will probably go for M1, M2 etc.Lets see what happens!

    Wave to open/close, once they get older, get very flaky and frustrating. Buttons are far more reliable, plus they are familiar so you don't find people who struggle to figure out how to correctly wave.

      I think you'll find that Waterloo Station will have buttons when it opens. Victoria Cross station has similar toilets, and they had push buttons.

    Why do they make the concourses in these new stations so big? I understand capacity proofing but capacity is needed on the trains, not for people to stand waiting or milling around

      Both are important, and it is much harder and hugely expensive to expand stations later. London has learnt this one the hard way! Platforms allow trains to be lengthen to 8 cars and the signalling system can accommodate a train every 2 minutes, and as its software driven, could potentially handle even more trains in the future as signalling systems evolve. So there's is plenty of capacity for longer and more trains.

      Yes it only has 2 platforms! I worked at the UK Waterloo station as a student in 1991, so I know it very well! At that time, they were building the Eurostar platforms and terminal, which I believe is now used by suburban trains.

    As someone from Perth, this station looks somewhat unnecessarily fancy and expensive. The platform area admittedly does not look as unnecessarily expensive as the massive, cavernous NWRL metro stations, but I still can’t help but wonder why NSW is so willing to bump up their construction budgets by billions to make the stations beautiful instead of just functional (e.g. current Martin Place or Wynyard).

      Tbf stations in the city are prioritised to look and feel the best for obvious reasons, there has been massive upgrades to existing stations as well. I think it's a good thing for stations to be architecturally imposing, as it's always been throughout history... I would just prefer it to stay in budget.

      @@mgp1203 This isn’t the case, though. Before the renovation that opened earlier this year, Central looked horrible. The City Circle stations are varying degrees of dated-looking, cramped, and suffocating, and Martin Place is passable but ultimately not that much better. None of them, except Central, are particularly imposing either. The nicest and most imposing stations I’ve been to are the NWRL ones, which suggests to me that the key attribute is newness, not distance to the city or importance.
      And I think all this extra fanciness makes it more likely for them to blow the budget by more.

      That was my point about upgrades on existing city stations. Central and Wynyard post-upgrades in particular are very nice to visit, even Wynyard tunnel to Barangaroo. As for the NWRL I agree that the designs are nice and modern, but even the costs were less than expected. It was actually under-budget.. So we are still able to design affordable and architecturally beautiful stations, the costs on this line specifically just keep ballooning. @@basketcase6999

      @basketcase6999 Its certainly important to build stations that cater for future capacity, as its hugely expensive and disruptive to do that later. It's hard to measure, but I believe the architecture and finishes, make the stations more exciting, inviting and pleasant, and that will encourage more people to use them. And these certainly don't cost billions! I haven't been to Perth for a while, so I'll be interested to see how the new airport station looks when I next go there.

    The problems with the toilet door controls isnt that its done contactless, it's that the 'locking options' panel is visually unintuitive. It all being conveyed in English text for starters and the red and green lights not making much sense (internationally, green is go red is stop).
    Eventhough I sometimes have my doubts on how the station signage is employed, I have to say that the Sydney Metro stations are some of the best designed stations in the world. There always seems to be very high attention to detail and human-friendly design and good materilisation while also being technologically advanced and quite customer-service oriented.

    0:14 you can clearly the the biggest weaknes of the project here, as @RMTransit pointed out: The gaps between many of the stations are WAY too long.
    Even with more stations it would still be fast enough, but with many more possible riders and better coverage

      Hi @nicolasblume1046, I don't the gaps are so bad on the City & Southwest extension. The only longer sections are Victoria Cross to Barangaroo (which goes under the harbour) and Waterloo to Sydenham, where the line passes close to both Green Square and St Peters station. I agree that Sydney Metro West could do with some more stations, and that may happen as a result of the current review of this project.

      the distance between Chatswood and Crows Nest is also very long, you could even fit two new stations in between. One between Central and Waterloo would also make sense and between Waterloo and Sydenham (more interchanges is better)@@TransportVlog

    Terrific video Paul. Very in depth. Loking at the rendered images was disappointing though. They had a chance to incorporate nature but haven't. Why are there no green walls, water features to make the surrounds livable with our changing climate. And although they have put in a area for bikes(which was disappointing to see it wasn't on view yet) there didn't seem to be easy clear bike paths into the station, yet lots of provisions for cars and taxi's. A little less perforated art work and a little more effort put into making our new cities developements climate ready. If they have incorporated sustainabilty into this project I would love you to do a video on it and also a revisit to get an indepth look as to whether people choosing to ride are really being catered for would be absolutely awesome. :)

      Glad you enjoyed it! The rendered images are not set in stone, and don't cover everything, so things like bike paths, shrubs, and water features may well appear between now and when the station opens. And these are easy to add later too. I'll keep an eye out for these things and include them in my follow-up video when this station opens.

    Common sense would say connect this to nearby Redfern station via underground pedestrian subway lined with some shops, restaurants etc. But this is Australia and we are backwards so I'm guessing that won't be part of the plan

      Redfern and Waterloo are about 1 kilometre apart, so it would be quicker for passengers to continue one more stop to Central to change to the metro, rather than walking 1K. So I don't think that's a common sense idea! And if you think Australia is backward, take a look at the amazing upgrade to Central Station and Redfern Station!
