    At first, Ryan Petersen imagined that Flexport would serve as a sort of “Turbo Tax for importing” - a software that just does the necessary paperwork for companies. But like most founders, his vision grew over time.
    Today, Flexport sends over 200,000 shipping containers across the globe. While Petersen and his team have seen enormous success that doesn’t mean his job as a founder and CEO gets any easier.
    So how do you go from envisioning a simple “Turbo tax for importing” to scaling a world class company that has a direct impact on the global economy and the ears of government officials?
    It’s not easy - there’s bound to be struggles and pain along the way. But for Petersen, a deep understanding of the company’s vision - and just how big an impact you can have in the world - is the key to pushing through the growing pains that will inevitably arise.
    “If what you’re trying to achieve is important enough, then you'll overcome all the pain.”

    It seems Flexport would be best served if products were made locally and the only thing that is shipped are the materials needed to manufacture the products. This is our goal at Made Right America. Our "Zero Debt Job Creation System" as we call it, doesn't depend on using our hard earned tax dollars to get the job done. I'm sure we will be talking to you folks at Flexport soon. Keep up the good work Flexport!

    All I saw was advertising and them asking to have a monopoly over global trading.
    I trust governments to handle that over companies prioritizing profit over quality and efficiency .

    • @teiuq
      @teiuq 2 роки тому +6

      I agree on the advertising and would say there is no real new idea presented here neither a solution for recent problems.
      At the same time i question that governments would handle a global process like shipping better than a company.
      Im sure market participants will figure out the most efficient ways to organize this which will of course require quality to satisfy the customers.
      There are enough examples where governments fail to coordinate on a global scale - recent example covid-19.
      Feel free to elaborate or help me out if i missunderstood your statement.

      @@teiuq the government had no complete control over individuals or their actions during COVID-19. They implemented mandates/suggestions/guidelines. Sure. Although at the end of the day it was up to individuals.
      I’m not saying the government can be fully trusted. Although through a system that divided powers that regulate and are over seen by other local officials. I believe that there is a chance. There’s not enough data to say I’m completely right, but things aren’t getting any better if they keep going the way they have.
      Government has proven to warn and predict many catastrophic scenarios could’ve been avoided. Just to be ignored. Just to not hinge productivity.
      Oil spills,hazardous building integrity,Chemical spills, fire hazard, etc.
      Having corporate individuals oversee these operations leaves no room for accountability other that a bill they need to pay. That doesn’t cover the entire cost of the damage they’ve caused.

    “Why am I the only one doing this? I think the answer is that it’s incredibly hard.” Pretty sure that’s not an answer someone in one of his competitors’ companies can give their CEO or CLO (Chief Logistics Officer) when maybe 30% of their company’s cost of doing business is shipping.

    Need to STOP shipping products all over the place. The ONLY thing that should be shipped is raw materials and products should be produced in the countries they are to be sold in. Local jobs. Minimize shipping pollution.

    • @freethink
      @freethink  2 роки тому +4

      Thanks for raising this point! It's a really important question - and it turns out things are more complicated than you might think.
      Some things are currently much more carbon-intensive to produce locally - for example, foods that can be grown efficiently on large farms in naturally suitable habitats, vs. having to use much more land and resources per unit to grow them locally around the world. For these, transportation represents a tiny share of their environmental impact relative to production.
      pre-sustainability.com/articles/sourcing-locally-is-better-myth-or-not/
      scienceline.org/2020/05/why-eating-local-isnt-always-best-for-the-environment/
      However, this equation could change with technology like vertical farms that can allow food to be grown efficiently very close to where it is consumed anywhere in the world. We recently produced a video on this topic: ua-cam.com/video/J4SaSfnHK3I/v-deo.html
      And that's only the start of the conversation. Local manufacturing can boost local jobs - but also increase costs to local consumers, and may not be feasible for many products in many countries. Then there's the question of when labor conditions in other countries or environmental regulations in various countries are unethical and should not be supported. Meanwhile, differences in the types of goods being discussed (food vs. electronics, for example) can radically change the variables in the equation--and fuels like Green Hydrogen could make cargo ships sustainable. www.freethink.com/environment/green-hydrogen
      In a time of such change and complexity, it's tough to weigh all the considerations and technological alternatives. One hope is that as different players strive to improve the efficiency and sustainability of their sectors, the most efficient solutions will win out and help civilization become sustainable as fast as possible.

      Sorry you didn't like it. For what it's worth, it's not an ad, but that perception is something we see your comments on and are currently working on with our Challengers series. Our goal is to inspire entrepreneurship by telling the stories of people doing important work in the space, and it may be a fine line between that and making it feel like a commercial.
      We get where you're coming from with the perception that it's an obvious invention. The subject himself addresses this around 3:13 (and in our previous video with them when they were starting out. ua-cam.com/video/3jvRNATITmQ/v-deo.html ). The innovation of it isn't so much the idea of the software, but that the incredible complexity of the problem (many companies across many countries using antiquated, manual systems) made it so enormously difficult so nobody had been able to actually do it. There's sometimes more value in execution than in idea; you might say that's the difference between knowing how to bench press 400 pounds and actually being able to do it :).
